Linked Accounts
I like this idea a lot! Every time I reach for blackwand on my second and its not there, I cry a little....
I have often noticed that the solution to "I don't have enough character slots" is "get a second account". and in many other games, this is a grand idea. But it's not as feasible for CoX. Veteran rewards, while not important individually, drastically alter the game as your account ages.
I'm in over the six year mark, and there's no way I could play the game from scratch again. The game at 0 months and at 75 months is so vastly different as to practically be a different game. So here's the suggestion: Allow an account to be linked with another account registered to the same person on the same credit card. The linked account would then share the benefits of the main account. Veteran rewards are granted to players, why should it matter that one of the accounts (of two that both belong to me) was created years later? In fact, I'd say it speaks more to my customer loyalty that I have a second account. This wouldn't give anyone an advantage that they don't already have. People would still have to pay for a second account. Include a $10 "Link charge" to actually link the two accounts. If the main account drops at any time, the secondary account loses all access to rewards gained from the link (but none from time that the account has actually been active). If either account drop at any time, then relinking costs another $10 fee. Thoughts? |
If this was implemented RMT sites will then be able to sell instant vet accounts to people. Simply "create" a new account and link it to get the vet status and then sell the login and password to some schmuck for hundreds of dollars.
And RMT sites don't care if their "customers" get screwed on the deal. They will most likely already be fraudulently using the morons credit card info.
Furthermore the customers that get screwed on the deals won't be blaming the RMT sites, because that would mean admitting they were doing something stupid and wrong. Instead they'll play the innocent victim and paint CoH as the bad guys which will drive away potential customers.
/unsigned.

I know that there are some players that have more than 396 characters and need that second account, but I don't think the call for it is great enough to implement this suggestion.
/unsigned too. IME, vet rewards are a thank you by the devs for your loyalty keeping the account active. You kept an account open for 6 years- grats! you get the benefits. You kept an account open for 1 month, you don't get the same benefit.
You aren't cheated in any way here. You were given the rewards for what you did - keeping an account open. Want more? Keep more accounts open that period of time.
Plus all this linking and dropping sounds like a CS nightmare to manage and overly complicated.

/Unsigned for me as well. For the various reasons mentioned. There is no need for this.
But isn't it a thank you to the player? That's my point, overall. Also, I think you'd see more second account holders. It's actually the main reason I don't have a second. If I could go back in time and set my second up retroactively, I would.

A game should be judged by its content, not its vet rewards. If the content is bad, no amount of vet rewards will keep some one playing.
Interesting idea, but...
...why not simply increase the total character cap? I mean hey, moneyz for NCsoft, character slots for players, everyone profits.
Hundreds of dollars for temporary vet status? Seriously? I don't see that a few benefits that aren't applied permanently would be worth that much. But hey, I'm not a gold farmer, so maybe a couple of temp powers and costume pieces are worth three figures. Sounds silly, but what do I know.

Here's an example which I saw happen in another MMO. This happened during the games open beta testing before the game launched, and everyone in the beta knew that when the game launched the server was going to be erased and we would all start from scratch with new characters.
Now even in the Open Beta the game already had RMT sites spamming their services. There was a lot of snide remarks and laughter at the idea of anyone being stupid enough to use an RMT site especially when we all knew that the servers were getting erased the day before launch.
Lo and behold one schmuck did it. We know he did because the RMT site stole his forum account and used it to spam the forums and got his account banned. The schmuck was a guy that had been "bragging" on the forums about buying 4 or 5 copies of the game in order to get the best of the different pre-order perks as well as a lifetime subscription.
The copies of the game ran between $50 to $79 bucks from the various retailers and the Lifetime Sub ran $250. So when the schmuck got banned a week before the game launched for using an RMT site he threw away around $600 dollars for a game he never got to play.
Want another example? There's a guy that spent $300,000 dollars to buy a virtual space station in another game. Can't say the name here on the forums but you can google the story and get several articles.
You and I and many others here may have the common sense not to go near RMT sites but that leaves plenty of morons who do.
