Quote:This is pretty much how I feel. AFAIK, CoH is the ONLY MMO on the planet that lets you get top tier gear through soloing. Teaming cause you want to = fun. Teaming cause you have to = totally unfun.Interesting thread.
Now, we know (yes, we *do* know) that the next releases of incarnate content will involve team challenges. Honestly that doesn't bother me unless the rewards for this content are *necessary* for gaining badges and/or costume pieces. Which of course it will be, so damn.
What to do now? Well, I just hope (like a lot of peeps here) that there will be soloable methods to earn the same rewards that you get from the upcoming team "raids" or Trials, TFs, etc. Not necessarily as fast, but still reasonable.
It's not just the new focus on teaming, but now there's gated endgame content. I've been here since launch, but with this change in direction it looks like it might be finally time to hang up the cape. Which sucks, because I have always loved and lauded this game.
Shame. -
Quote:Please don't drag out this argument in City of Heroes. There's tons of reasons to play an MMO that do not include grouping up.One big reason is because teaming is the main pupose of an MMO - there's no point in having players sharing a game world unless they're going to interact with each other.
If I see an new MMO on the market that looks interest, the first thing I look for is 'how much of it can I solo'. If I can't solo most of it, then I won't play it no matter what else it offers.
Does that mean I shouldn't play MMOs? Why not? I pay my money the same as anyone else, and I have fun soloing. It can't be right to just say 'go play something else' when I'm having fun playing here.
City of Heroes is the ONLY MMO that I know of that lets you get top tier loot without ever once grouping. That is freaking awesome to me! That is, by far, CoH's biggest selling point. -
I don't consider myself an introvert, but I do agree with much of what the OP has said. Nor do I consider myself a poor player (I have some builds that can solo missions set for 8), but I don't think I could solo many AVs (ridiculous regen, every one of them IMO).
I've played since launch and there are still some TF's I've never done. But except for some badges and the odd accolade, not doing them all is not much of a penalty.
I will say I just loathe seeing a quest giver say "you must have x friends"..... ugh. I have well over 50 characters and have grouped up many, many times. I'd say my good grouping experiences outweigh my bad ones, but not by a landslide. But I hate, HATE having to.
City of Heroes has always been my most beloved MMO, precisely for the reason that I can obtain top tier loot solo. I don't know of one (and I mean, not one) other MMO that allows for this. Bless CoH for having this.
Now, I don't know for sure the req's of the Incarnate system, but if some highly desirable items can now only be achieved through grouping then this is a serious concern for me. Whether some like it or not, it represents a shift in what has always be CoH's unique strength. -
While I realize I'm inviting being flamed, I think sappers are still OP'd. I try hard to avoid any Malta mission strictly because of the existance of this mob.
-
First thing I look for is length of arc. I tend to stick to very short/short and sometimes medium.
Next thing is level; if it tops out at a level below my current one, I move on.
Next is solo-friendly, if it contains an AV or multiple EBs, I move on.
Next is mob type. There are simply a number of mob types I don't enjoy fighting; Malta for example. I'm much more likely to do this mission if it's Council or Family or possibly Freaks.
Last is effort made. If the description is one short sentence with misspelled words, I'll keep looking. -
What are all the things one can do to get more auction house slots? Or perhaps someone could provide a link to a post that lists them? I tried searching, but I got dozens of pages.
-
I have also been playing since launch.
I never pvp, so that kind of balance is never an issue for me. I can honestly say that without the invention system, I'm not sure I'd still be here. For me, it added a lot of depth and customization to a game that offers little else to do besides missions. I love crafting now, and the current state of both WW and the BM allows me to make enough money to create all the builds I can envision. -
My wife and I both have accounts and the computers are fairly close to each other. I created a character on her account (emp/rad defender) strictly for the purpose of dual boxing at times. I put the defender on follow and auto-heal, and then my scrapper can crank up the difficulty having a dedicated medic handy.

Quote:I get far too many of them. If you give me your global, I'll send you all of mine, I never use them and they just take up space.I've run Positron TF Parts 1&2 once each (10 Missions total)
I've run "Benjamin Decker" in Ouroboros 9 times (27 Doors, 9 Talk To, 36 Total)
I've run the Kelly Nemers "Eternal Battle" in Ouroboros 10 times (2 doors, 3 hunts, 50 missions total)
I've run 4 radios in P.I.
All of this since the servers came up on Wednesday with Issue 17. In total, 100 missions. Not a single Temp Power. No old ones, no new ones. With the markets down, I can even buy one and pretend it dropped.
So... Next week I'll spin the RNG and see if it hates me then too. -
One of the coolest MMO moments I've ever had was when I had a bugged mission in IP. I put in a ticket and about 10 minutes later I'm startled by a flying police drone, complete with whirling lights. I laughed at myself and within a couple of minutes he had the problem solved, then just flew away. It was very memorable.
-
From the description of this power, it would seem it does nothing if you are solo. Do I have this correct? Do NPC allies in missions count?
-
I have 4 SGs (2 hero/2 villain on 2 servers) and all of them are built for functionality. I spend very little time on aestethics. As such, all my bases are very similar in layout; entry room, 2 workrooms, 2 teleporter rooms, etc. If I can shave a few seconds off of getting around, I'll change the layout to do so.
Don't get me wrong, some ppl have very cool looking bases, but they're so large you can practically get lost in them. For me, functionality over looks everytime. -
I think this is a great idea. I filled out one of the Mentor forms a few days back. Let me know when you want me to begin my duties.
-
I just got this yesterday (joy!). If I read it right, I can now take flight without having to take hover, speed without having to take haste, etc.
My question is; if I respec an existing character, can I then have this benefit? In other words, free up a power slot? -
I love this game. I really do. I just got my 60 month vet badge. But I just can't stand any more hide and seek missions. Almost every single mission boils down to that; find the glowie, find the hostage, find the boss, etc. Please please please put in map markers for every quest objective, or perhaps make them optional for those who don't want them.
It's very unfun to search a huge map for a hostage or two. -
Sorry, but I have to be a bit vague here. Let's just say I've heard about some information regarding possible account security issues. To whom would I send a PM?
-
One thing I think they could do is that since the devs have their hands full with 'new shiny', they could look at or commision some of the players to create arcs via AE. Once the best of these arcs were looked at and approved, the devs could make a few tweaks to take them out of AE and into the 'real world'.
While I realize that would take some time, I think it would take a lot less than creating from scratch. -
Let's face it, some missions are more fun than others. But fun is relative.
For me, I auto-complete:
- any mission in a CoT cave. Almost every mission in this game has an element of hide-and-seek to it; find the glowies, find the boss, find the hostage(s), etc. These caves just have way too many hiding places for me to find them fun.
- bizarre objectives. There is a RWZ mission where there are mobs that attack you but you are not allowed to defeat them. Personally, I hate this concept. I never do that mission.
- zone restricted kill x missions. If I'm told to take out 50 of something in a specific zone, it's very unlikely I'm gonna actually do it. If no zone is mentioned, then at least I can do a paper/radio mission and kill two birds at once.
- some timed missions. Fortunately, with these, you can just ignore them and they time out to completion. I do most of them, but sometimes they just get sprung on you without warning, like when you cash in a quest and suddenly a timer is running on a new one. I'm looking at you Cimerora.
There used to be others (like most AV missions), but since we can now set our own difficulties, I don't feel the need to auto-complete very often. -
To the OP: if you are selling generic IOs as a way to make money, you are truly wasting your time. There are much, much better ways to make money. All my generic IO recipes go straight to the vendor (if its convenient at the time), or for 1 inf on the market. The ONLY good reason to craft them is for the badge or for yourself.
If you like, send me a PM and I'll show you how to make millions in a very short time. Heck, it's pretty easy to get to a few hundred thousand on a level 1 without crafting anything. -

Quote:I'll be 48 this year. I remember much of what you mention, including the old black and white serials that included the first superman actor, Alyn Kirk.Curious if there are other old farts out there like me.
I am 60 years old, and have loved comics and superheroes since I read my first Superman comic during the Silver Age in the 1950s and watched George Reeves on TV. And in the 60s, I got to see comics evolve firsthand as Stan Lee brought "real" people into the mix. All in color. All for a dime.
Other than a lifelong love affair with comics (and Star Trek, Sci-Fi and Comic Book movies), I have lived a "regular" life. College-educated. Married. Good family life. Terrific white-collar job.
Anyone else out there like me? Or am I as odd as I sometimes think I am? -
To Macskull: thank you for filling me in. You are correct in that I never bother with non-generics below level 50. Your response was much more informative than the rather condescending one I got from Nethergoat. And despite his doubts on my veracity, I have never had trouble getting the recipes I wanted redside except for a few purples.
Regarding storage, considering I can put a dozen or more storage racks in one base, I'm content with that limitation. It's still a lot more than most MMOs allow.
To Ironblade: BoA means bind on acquire. I mentioned it cause someone else had quoted a dev talking about it as a possibility in this thread.
If there is a shortage problem redside, then I would suggest not increasing the drop rate but increasing both redside content and the desire to play it, perhaps thru, as someone mentioned, increasing red TF merit rewards. I also like the idea of lowering merit costs for lower level recipes. -
Quote:OK, fair enough. I tend to play for a few months at a time, then barely touch my characters again for another few months, but keep my subscription active.Huh.
That's quite a pair of rose colored glasses you've got there, pardner.
I never have trouble making inf, either side. And except for some purples redside, I never have trouble finding what I want for my builds. I tend to not bother with anything other than generics until my characters reach 50.
So, I'll bite. Educate me as to what problems exist with the market as it stands.
