Question about Phalanx Fighting

From the description of this power, it would seem it does nothing if you are solo. Do I have this correct? Do NPC allies in missions count?

It gives you an unenhanceable 5% defense to all (Tank value) plus provides some defense (3% I believe) when you have teammates within 8 feet. Adding defense enhancements increases the defense you get for your teammates, but not the original 5%.

So you'd get the 5% when you are solo. I'm not sure about NPC allies in missions; the City of Data descriptions says "teammates".

EDIT for lack of clarity.

This.

The amount is 3.5% for scrappers and brutes. It's unenhanceable, but as anyone knows, 3.5% is very valuable when you're sitting at 42% defense.

It also makes a wonderful place to slot a LotG +Recharge or Kismet +Acc IO, since slotting the power up is kind of pointless unless you plan on teaming with other shield users.

NPC allies don't count. I've tested it.

And it's passive -- no end cost, can't be turned off.

As I understand it, the base 3.5-5% defense is unenhanceable; the additional for allies is enhanceable(not 100% certain as the numbers do show in detailed info).

That is correct, as Finduilas said.

And just so there is no confusion, the enhanceable part works when ANY teammates are in range, not just other shield users. Of course, it will mostly be melee types that are within 8' of you, but whoever they are they count.

Of course it works for anyone. I didn't mean to imply that it didn't.

It just works better with other shield users who also have Phalanx Fighting and Grant Cover.

Except Phalanx Fighting is just for you. Grant Cover, on the other hand, will protect others.
