  2. My 2 inf: In any MMO, there needs to be solo content. There also needs to be team content. I like to solo, and I do solo quite a bit. However I also like teaming up and I do that too.

My first 50 hero was a Tanker, and I bet you he's maybe soloed one story arc in his entire career. What's the point of playing a Tank if I don't have anyone to tank for? But on my Masterminds I usually want to be left alone. Those random pets I get when my MM's use the LFG window are so hard to control.

My point is: a good game should support both playstyles. This way you make more people happy and keep more subscribers. More subscribers means more money flowing in. I think CoH does a very good job of doing this. Our difficulty system is the smartest thing I've ever seen in an MMO. Mechanically, I truly believe we have the best game out there with the most varied options for supporting different playstyles. I was actually quite shocked to learn that becoming an Incarnate could be solo'd at all (poor drop rates or not) and my hat is off to the Devs for doing it. Just another example of how good this game is. I have my reservations about the Incarnate-specific content, but that is not relevant to this discussion.

I think a lot of people have formed the idea they have to solo everything because of bad experiences in the past. They join a team and get berated for power choices, or ask for help and get mocked or worse yet ignored. This is why I will always help someone that asks. I've made several global friends this way. So to those who've been guilty of ignoring requests for help: the next time someone needs help taking down Protean, don't just ignore it and move on because you don't get Incarnate Shards off him. Help them. Maybe then those folks will get the idea that yes, teaming is actually OK and a viable option. If enough folks do that, then we will start seeing far fewer threads complaining about non-solo content. Now hush up already and invite my TA Defender to your team.

What's even funnier is the number of people jumping at the chance to defend this particular brand of fun, despite it having been reviled and joked about on these boards for years.

In the end it boils down to this for me: I have experienced endgame raiding in other MMO's and do not like it. It bores me to absolute tears. I find endless team wipes and strategy tweaks to be tedious at best. If that is truly the experience the Devs want us to have in the Incarnate content then I shall simply pass on doing it. But for the love of Heaven, don't forget that non-endgame players still exist. As long as future Issues still have things for me to do that aren't Incarnate content, I'll be fine.

I have yet to do an Incarnate TF. I'll probably squeeze one in this week now that my Plant/Fire Dom has his Alpha slot. However from reading these boards and having raided endgame elsewhere, I have a fair idea what to expect. If that expectation is proven correct, I will never touch the Incarnate content again.

I have stuck with CoH all these years specifically because it IS different from everyone else. Giving it endgame content that is along the same style as other games? Yuck.
  4. I have the Alpha slot unlocked on both my Ice/Ice Tanker and on my Plant/Fire Dom. I have a boost slotted on the Dom but need an ITF to finish the Tanker's. That being said, I am in no hurry whatsoever. The more feedback I read on these TF's the more they sound like the raiding scene in WoW, right down to the "not standing in fire" part courtesy of Battle Maiden.

Like Samuel and Johnny, I absolutely can't stand content that cheats. Why did I spend all that influence on my Tanker's build, turning him into a veritable juggernaut, if it is going to be negated by arbitrary mechanics? Might as well be using SO's still at that point. Make me work for aggro, fine. Force me to have good situational awareness, by all means. But making opponents that can kill me outright in a couple hits? That's not challenge, that's just stacking the deck.

I'm sure I'll get dragged into an Incarnate TF at some point, and am reserving my final judgment on this content for when I actually experience it. But take it from someone that has "been there, done that" when it comes to endgame content in other MMO's: if this is WoW, Super Hero Style, that will be the one and only time I do any of it.

Ah well, time to go to work. I can start my day now that I've had my morning rant.

  7. My friends, we have a serious problem. It would seem that the governments of Praetoria, Paragon City, and the Rogue Isles have become so consumed with their plots within plots they have begun to neglect the basics. Clearly, funding has been shifted away from educational programs in those cities.

How do I know this? It's simple really. I have had numerous occasions recently to escort citizens of those lands to safety after they were captured by my enemies. Most of them:

    1) Don't know that fire burns as they will happily stand in it.
    2) Can't comprehend how stairs work. They get half way up or down the staircase in question and then become highly confused and agitated.
    3) Don't understand that when running over rough terrain occasionally looking down is a good idea so you don't get stuck on a boulder roughly half your size.
    4) Sometimes they cannot grasp how doors function either. When panicked by the presence of Evil, citizens will often headbutt the nearest door repeatedly.
    5) Upon being rescued many citizens will turn around and run right back in the direction you just led them from. Hello? Hurty stuff is that way, remember?

Sadly, I have even begun to notice heroes (and villains) of our fair lands afflicted with this same lack of basic education.

If our governments are not going to do anything about it, we as heroes (and villains) must take charge of the situation! To that end I am proposing the creation of the Super Beings Helping Citizens Center. Classes will be conducted daily at the SBHCC and are focused on giving our citizens the skills they need to survive in the modern world. Core courses include:

    1) Up and Back Down Again: Navigating staircases in the modern world.
    2) Be One With the Door: A detailed breakdown of the types of doors encountered in day to day life and how to operate them.
    3) Looking Down: How to look down and avoid treacherous obstacles that might impede your progress, like man-sized boulders.
    4) The Road Warriors: Cars and trucks are NOT battering rams people!
    5) Ouch 101: A basic explanation of what various harmful substances will actually do to the unaugmented human body.

Semester 1 will begin January 11, 2011. If you know someone that could benefit, please refer them to us! The SBHCC is there for everyone.

    Tip Missions

My favorite tip mission so far has to be the one that has you invade a 5th Column training camp (blue side tip). All the Trolls and Skulls running for their lives from the 5th Column drill instructors is just priceless.

As for Morality missions, the one you get in the 30's (blue side) to bring in Doc Quantum is wonderful. His lair being set up as one huge death trap you have to cautiously get through is an awesome touch.

I also enjoyed the blue side morality mission in the 20's to rescue the hostages and take down Blast Furnace. The dialogue with him is great.

Edit: actually come to think of it, I like all the blue side tips involving Doc Quantum. His descent from hero to vigilante is an interesting story.

I didn't think it was possible for someone to have a sense of self entitlement that huge, complete contempt for "lesser" people, ridiculous levels of elitism, and an attitude that purely selfish combined into one personality.
At least half the playerbase of a certain really popular fantasy themed online game is just like the OP. I'm not kidding. There's a reason I'm not there any more and stay in the City exclusively.

So far the only trouble I've had in the new warehouses has been this one large room with a conveyor belt running along each side of the wall as you enter. The room has blue flooring. Drops my framerate down to about 10 fps. The weird thing is, if I'm standing at the threshold looking into the room my FPS is fine. Step across that doorway into the room itself though, and the FPS drops like a stone.

  12. A character I learned to hate? That one's easy: my very first CoH character ever: mind/empathy controller, before controllers had containment. Talk about yuck. I never got past 24 on him. He still exists on a server I no longer play on. Someday I'll delete him I suppose.

There's another timeline hiccup the Devs did recently: the new Positron TF. At some point you get sent by Azuria into Oranbega. Yet it's supposedly Laura Brunetti's arc in IP that not only reveals the existence of Oranbega as more than a mere rumor, but also has you breaking the mystic wards the Circle have been using to hide it for years. Up until that arc the location of their base of operations wasn't supposed to be known for sure. At level 15, Azuria simply shouldn't be able to say "hey guys, go to this lost city the Circle live in" and pop you straight there. For one, it's existence in the modern era is just a rumor at that point, and for another they (at that level) are supposed to have wards in place that prevent her from doing it.

Personally I blame Ouroboros. All that mucking around with time by the Menders has gotten our causes and effects all screwed up.

Yeah sometimes your own teammates are your worst enemies. This is especially true of Mind Control with its sleeps. I can't tell you the number of times I've hit Mass Hypnosis on a group of adds only to have a Corruptor/Blaster/Etc stop attacking the first spawn that is still alive to toss an AoE in the middle of the slept spawn. The worst teammate for sabotage has to be a Controller or another Dom though. What's that, someone just placed Earthquake? Why, now must be the perfect time to hit Fire Cages! (For those that don't know, Fire Cages has -KB, making Earthquake useless.)

I've played Doms so much though that the antics of my fellow teammates actually amuse me these days. I have 36 characters on Liberty; most of them are Doms. I just love the AT. It's challenging to play well, and that keeps me interested.

Earth/Fire is very solid. And don't get me wrong, Fire Control is a nice set, I just don't think it has enough control for someone totally new to Doms to get used to the AT. After you've gotten accustomed to playing a Dom for a while, by all means give Fire a go. It just doesn't have the survivability of the other sets.
  16. Of the combo's you listed I'd go with Earth/Earth. I call mine my "Brutinator" because he almost feels like a Brute with all the smashy smashy from Earth Assault. You won't be an AoE powerhouse, but you will be able to dish out amazing single target damage.
  17. My personal suggestions for a starting out Dom are Plant, Mind, or Earth for Primary. For secondary I would go with Fire, Energy, or possibly Psi (I honestly don't care for Psi Assault that much myself but that's more of a personal preference than a comment on the set's viability).

My first 50 was a Plant/Fire. I recently switched him to the Fire Mastery ancillary pool and...oh my. AoE damage galore. I also have a mid-30's earth/fire (insanely good combo) and a mind/fire (the controls aren't quite as AoE damage friendly while soloing, but still very strong). I recently started leveling a mind/energy and I'm loving it. Energy's single target focus works very well with mind control.

Two sets I would absolutely stay the hell away from on a beginner Dom: fire control and gravity control. Both are relatively weak in the actual control department. I've had several SG mates give up on Doms because they chose one of those two sets as their first one. In my opinion a starting out Dom player needs a good solid control set to get used to the AT's play style before tackling one of the weaker control sets.
  18. One of the things I've always liked about CoH is that it wasn't an "end game" MMO, so I honestly can't say I'm happy to see us getting an end game.

My final opinion is reserved for how I see the Devs treat future content releases. If almost every issue is primarily devoted to new Incarnate content, I won't be very happy at all. But if they maintain a balance, then good deal.

    Spines/Fire

With the launch of I19 I created a Spines/Fire scrapper. It's an idea I've had knocking around in my head for a while that I've been putting off because I knew inherent fitness was coming. Below is the build I've worked up for him (yay for I19 Mids! ). I would appreciate any feedback on what I may have done wrong. I don't often play Scrappers and I just can't shake the feeling I've messed up the build. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Praetoria was surprisingly dead last night on Liberty. I honestly expected more people to want to experience Inherent Fitness while leveling. Guess I was wrong. The lure of "end game content" (I still shudder at the thought of CoH going in that direction) was just too much I suppose.
  21. While many people were out working on becoming incarnates of various deities tonight I decided to make one of the character ideas I've had on hold for a while to see how Inherent Fitness impacts the low levels. I'll get to that Incarnate stuff at some point, but not today.

So earlier tonight I made Fever Quill, the Spines/Fire scrapper. To be honest I didn't expect Stamina with just the base slot filled with a TO to have much of an impact. Boy was I wrong. My power choices as of level 8 are:

    Barb Swipe
    Lunge
    Spine Burst
    Fiery Aura
    Blazing Aura
    Healing Flames

I also have sufficient veteran rewards that I have Sands of Mu, the Blackwand, and a Nemesis Staff. Long story short: I spammed every Primary and Veteran attack every time they were up, and I purposely put myself in situations where I would take enough damage to need to use Healing Flames often.

I never got below 75% endurance during any mission tonight, even when I got the Quick Reflexes buff from Secondary Mutation and was able to hit attacks even more often. I did have to use Rest once, but that was only because I took out 3 spawns of +1 Praetorian Resistance thanks to those silly PPD I was trying to rescue chasing runners and bringing back friends. Even then, I was resting to heal, not restore End.

To say the least, I am impressed and pleasantly surprised. In retrospect it makes sense though, since I don't have sufficient slotting to have any sort of meaningful recharge there is enough of a delay that my End bar has frequent opportunities to recover. For this reason, Stamina has a far greater impact on the lowest levels than I thought it would.

My hat's off to you, Devs. You just made the low levels not only tolerable, but really fun. And this is coming from a person that normally hates the 1-20 stretch.

During the I14/I15 debacle, I argued both that exploitive farming was a detriment to the game no matter what sort of phony Robin Hood delusions anyone had but I also argued that non-exploitive farming was not something the devs cared all that much about and wasn't in the same category of detrimental activity. I believe both. That makes me "neutral" in the sense I don't believe farming is all good or all bad. But it doesn't mean I don't have an opinion. I have strong opinions: they are just inconsistent with the two largest sides to this issue.
Fair enough. I did misunderstand your opinion in your first couple of posts then. Thanks for the debate though, it's kept me occupied this afternoon while I wait for interminably long queries and scripts to run at work.

I can respect your desire to remain neutral in the whole farming debate.
It doesn't address my original point, but that's ok as doing so might be construed as you "taking a side".

Same thing happened with XP normalization. Players leveling slower than intended when datamined. XP cranked up across the board within those level ranges.

What they cannot do is tweak the reward system player by player, depending on whether they farm or not. But the notion that farming helps the economy is based on a premise, that the drop rates are fixed and its up to the players to crank as much drops out of those drop rates as possible. That's not how it works.
The very statement that the Devs would have to change drop rates if they nuked farming from orbit just supports what I was saying, which is that farming benefits the system greatly in its current form. At this point you're just splitting hairs and I honestly don't understand why. It's almost like you find the idea of farming itself offensive and are absolutely determined to portray it as aberrant behavior. If I've misunderstood, I apologize, but that's what I'm taking away from your posts.

It goes back to my original point: non-exploitive farming, for whatever reason, has some kind of weird stigma associated with it in this game. I fail to understand why. I cannot name another MMO community that feels this way. If a player wants to gather materials for crafting in pretty much any other MMO, they farm for them (or buy them from other players, who themselves did the farming). What's the problem? Why do we even need to make a big deal out of it at all? And why the need to make it so abundantly clear that it is "unprotected" by the Devs? That statement alone implies they are barely tolerant of it.

Good. I'm glad that particularly nasty little exploit has been shut down. Its effect on the Market has been rather annoying.
