Don't forget to tell them why you're canceling your pre-order. Follow up with a letter.
Gamestop, as I understand it, is run by the regional managers. If the regional managers aren't doing their job by making sure customers are properly treated, Gamestop needs to know; the only way to do that is to document it with a letter. -
1. It seems TV's "grander plan" is to support Arachnos, because Arachnos uses it to spread propaganda.
2. Stacking mind control/hypnosis, actually. The more a character watches TV, the more enraptured he or she is, and the more influence it exerts. But it can choose whether to actually use that influence or not, on specific people.
3. Like Radio, Television seems to be an archetypal entity, generated by the expectations of the people. Sort of a spirit/psychic influence kind of thing. Ever heard of the Spirit of Radio? This is the Spirit of Television. There's also a Spirit of Slot Machines; unlockable contact in St. Martial. There might even be Cell Phone and Computer out there, someday
4. Television "speaks" through the shows. Maybe it can generate new programming, but it seems to prefer altering what's on the screen; or at least the character's perception of what's on the screen. Like Radio, though, it seems to be primarily limited to the one "body", mostly seen in Grandville.
5. Presumably, the "spirit" of TV has a home, a vulnerable point. What Nemesis was trying to do was capture that spirit in that home, grab control of it at that vulnerable point. Whereupon, like any other bound spirit, it would have to serve Nemesis instead of pursuing its own goals. -
Those "white lines" and "circles" floating in midair are actually lighting boundaries from overhead lights that have been incorrectly positioned.
It seems map errors like this come in with every patch. It's actually been an issue on Live since Issue 17, in Warehouse maps.
And the "rocks" in the Smooth Caves mapsets STILL haven't been fixed to look round instead of faceted. -
It might be your sound drivers. The GTX 470 definitely can handle City in Ultra mode.
Oh, I see a possible issue. Ambient Occlusion and Anti-aliasing do not play well together. Turn one or the other off. -
NCSoft probably wanted to shave a few bucks off their convention budget, so they bought a smaller space and shorted City of Heroes.

If I want to "Defeat things now!" I play a Blaster, Scrapper, or Brute
If I want to "Defeat things." I play a Corruptor.
If I want to "Defeat things soonish." I play a Dominator.
If I want to "Defeat something sometime." I play a Defender or Tank.
If I want to "Have someone else defeat things for me." I play a Controller. -
Yeah, this is why I don't trust the Global Server for storing anything. Right now, it handles: Global chat channels, E-mail, Friends lists, and the Auction Houses.
That's a lot to put on any single server, much less one that's pretty much second-hand to the primary game servers. -
Sony makes good hardware. However, being Sony, half of just about everything is proprietary. Custom sized power supplies, cases designed to fit the hardware for that model and very little else, etc. Acceptable in a laptop, not acceptable in a desktop.
In addition, driver updates are spotty at best. Sony apparently believes a> you don't need to upgrade your computer ever and b> when Sony's support runs out, it must be time for you to trade in or throw away your old computer. -
Knockdown is knockback with a magnitude less than 1. If you have any KB enhancers in Lightning Clap, it will do knockback instead. Are you *sure* this is an error?

Seriously, guys, it's NOT US.
It's not our computers. It's not our setup. It's not our ISP connections. It's not what operating system we're using, it's not whether we're on broadband or dial up or satellite. It's not our firewalls or our routers.
It is, plain and simple, the game servers. During the day, from around 1 am to 3-ish pm Eastern time, load times for missions are quick. The mapserver doesn't drop connections. It initializes instances quickly and easily.
Starting around 3 pm Eastern, the load times start creeping up. When you hit around 8 pm and continuing until 11 pm eastern, the load times vary but usually take longer and longer as the evening goes on and then they start dropping back down.
The number of people logged into the game also peaks around these times. So it's hardly a surprise that the Mapservers start getting worked hard.
Also, if you'll read the latest patch notes, there was a note that said "Fixed several rare crash conditions." Presumably, those crash conditions had something to do with loading between zones, and the added check and verify is also slowing down initial loads.
It's not us, individually. It's when we choose to play the game. -
Quote:I'm not bored with the game. But I do feel extremely constrained when starting a new villain. The progression through the zones is completely linear: Mercy - Port Oakes - Cap Au Diable - Sharkshead - Nerva or St. Martial, then St. Martial - Grandville.So.... You detest my idea because you are bored with the game. Perhaps you should look into Champions Online. It will be all shiney and new to you.
You know this paragraph makes my head hurt. You claim to not want to redo the current zones because you've started in Galaxy for the last 6 years but you are saying you are so bored with running past the same building, the same enemies, etc. You are in effect, sir, making the case for redoing the starting zones instead of making new zones.
It's only when you get past Sharkshead that the choices vary even a little, and that range just gives you a choice between Nerva or St. Martial.
And Sharkshead has a serious problem on the most populated servers. It is the one zone that is likely to have terrible problems; terrible lag, horrible rubber banding, and complete zone crashes happen more frequently with Sharkshead than they do with any other zone in the game.
Meanwhile, Paragon City has something of the opposite problem: There's too much City. Boomtown is an empty wasteland and one of the largest zones in the game, as one example. On the bright side, there are still parts of it I haven't seen in four years of play. On the downside, half of the contacts send me on extravagant and unnecessary tours of the city; "Go talk to this guy a couple zones away, who will send you to talk to that guy clear across the city, who will send you to Azuria, who will tell you to come back to me".
The starter zones on both sides need a revamp, but not a collapse into forcing everyone into Atlas Park. Instead, I'd like to see a second line of zones to go through in the Isles, a little more diversity, and yes, lighten parts of it up. The isles might be under sanction by the USA, but not necessarily the rest of the world. It has a tourist destination in St. Martial and the other casinos; clean and fix that area up. Start rebuilding or at least cleaning up parts of Mercy; five years is a LONG time for those debris piles to keep burning. -
Guys, please keep in mind that he's the Tech lead.
Not the Lead Designer. Not the Powers Guy. Not the Animation Guy or the Art Guy. Not the Missions Guy.
This is the guy in charge of making sure the ideas that the Dev team comes up with actually get implemented in the program. This is the guy who is in charge of the actual programmers, and getting them to fix bugs and implement new systems. He does have an idea of what's coming down the pipe, sure, but he's primarily a day to day or Issue to Issue guy.
A number of the questions I've seen in this thread are better addressed to other people. Like Chris "Back Alley Brawler" Bruce for the question on changing Blast-type animations to use different points on the character model. That's an animation issue.
Target_Next works like this in a very general way: Within 120 feet of the character, create a list of all visible enemies sorted by distance and target the closest enemy. On each subsequent tab, target the next enemy on the list that was created. On reaching the end of the list, go back to the first remaining on the list. When a target dies, remove it from the list. On clearing the current target by using the esc key, delete the list. -
Global chat/e-mail/Auction House are all hosted on the same physical servers it seems. And that server seems to lose e-mail/global chat connections to the clients *regularly*. At one point, it was losing connections several times a night and crashing at least twice a week.
Since then, the hardware people seem to have moved it to a more robust set of hardware; now it is only crashing once every couple of weeks and losing connection only during "prime time": 8:00 pm to 12:00 am eastern time.
It is still unreliable. I would never use it for storage for more than as long as it takes me to send a few e-mails for transfer to another character. -
What are you doing still up?
It's 1:23 am pacific time, on a weekend!
Get some rest, you. I'm sure your hand's steadier after a good night's sleep. -
.. Does Rularuu have a Rularuu-ized Weighted Companion Cube?!
No wonder he's insane. He should have euthanized it long ago. -
Missing:

A friend of mine can play again; before, there was a twenty minute time period before her laptop crashed. Now, it's just very very laggy, graphically.
So there's more in this patch than has been posted. Possibly a lot more. -
As far as I can tell, the only way you'll get a gaming laptop for $500-$800 is to buy it used and/or from a pawnshop.
Laptops are rarely upgradeable, and the upgrades that can be done are usually just replacing memory chips and/or replacing the hard drive.
For a good gaming laptop that will serve you for years, you're going to have to shell out $1200 or more. -
The global chat server can and does drop. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that you have lost the channel.
Don't panic, don't try to reform the channel. Wait until the global server comes back up and *then* check.
The client should reconnect to the global chat server automatically; sometimes it doesnt but you can force a refresh.
Type /chatsave on a character where you have the chat channels set up the way you like them. Then type /chatload when there's a drop. Everything should pop back up to normal, if the global chat server is live. -
"Keeping the markets divided would require significant on-going development support, and we needed to take this into consideration"
Don't fool yourselves. THIS is the real reason that they're letting the markets merge. -
Virtue is always "down" according to the Server Status page. Even when it's up.

_dummy_dns_resolver does not stop running easily. Sometimes, especially since Issue 17, you have to force a process kill on City of Heroes to get it to shut down.
It will eventually stop running, but it might take several minutes. I don't know why; I suspect poor programming. -
It's not that. It's that every other thing available has been made available to existing players through an item pack. The only exception I know of is the Collectors Edition Power Slide and Cape for City of Heroes; even the City of Villains pre-order helmets are available to veterans.
So, this is a break with what has happened in the past. Something only available to preorders from a specific company, and no apparent plans to make them available to existing players.
That's disturbing. Even as other MMORPGs are moving towards the "make everything available to existing players" model that City of Heroes has, City itself is hinting that they're moving away from it. -
Since this is about ART and not gameplay issues...
Clean up the Isles a little more. Make it a touch less grimy and dingy. Make the skies brighter.
I like the fact that the Isles have distinct neighborhoods with different qualities. I'd like more of that. Local markets and stores on the ground level, with apartments above. This is a common feature of architecture in areas with limited space; see Cairo, Egypt and its surrounding areas.
More buildings to go *into* would be nice, too. Doesn't have to be many, doesn't even have to have a story connected to it, but it would be nice to have a smaller casino, or a lounge, or a diner / restaurant / Super Mexicano that we can actually *go into* and *sit down at the booths*.
