The best way to experience "Dreamland" is to leave it on in the background, and don't look at the TV screen. Just pretend it's a radio drama of Dr. Who.
Worked pretty good for me. Made good background stuff as I puttered about on the computer one day. -
Quote:This is so very true.Boiling complex ideas down so anyone can understand them is really much much harder than writing an "elite" story that only a few people can get.
I remember vaguely an anecdote where a literary critic lambasted Isaac Asimov for his "overly simple" writing style, and several other writers of note came out to his defense, all basically saying "Ever try to write like Asimov does, with the efficiency of word choice, the minimal descriptions but still getting the story and ideas across? It's hard!" -
Quote:She did it at least twice that I saw!And... velara finally got a league to Avoid the Green Stuff? Where's her 'Cat Herder Supreme' badge!?!
Once, when I got it. Then, another run when Electroanagesia and some other people got it, since they missed the first league that got it.
She does really deserve that badge.... -
Well, I got my main, FemFury to 1306 badges, and that's all I can get (unless I start camping out in Beta and praying for Bug Hunter or something crazy like that).
Leaderboard listing on City Info tracker here: http://cit.cohtitan.com/character/leaderboards
Final badges were News Flash and Master of TPN, earned on a remarkably smooth run tonight.
And just a few short days ago, I had gotten Dreamwalker (completing Master of Minds of Mayhem) and Avoids the Greens Stuff (completing MoKeyes), both in one night.
Thanks to all the late night Trial running community on Justice, and all the people I've been in leagues with in pursuit of these badges.
Singling people out, thanks to @Electroanagesia, SG-mate and good friend, for helping me get onto many leagues when they were forming, and she was watching global channels more closely than I was. And thanks to her for bringing her empath main on trials to improve my badge chances, even when she had the badge already sometimes. And also for forming leagues specifically so we could farm the first phase of Minds of Mayhem for Nightmare monster credit.
Also specific thanks to @velara, for doggedly forming Keyes trial runs going for the Avoids the Green Stuff badge, so many, many, many times. So many times that we did finally get it.
And thanks to @Redshadows for leading the TPN where I got that last needed badge.
And to all the other league members I teamed with doing trials and making badge attempts. thanks to you too. Especially the ones smart enough to stay out of the green patch, attentive enough to listen to directions on a TPN, and focused enough to stay behind the tank in the bomb portion of a UGT. You know who you are.
Justice has a great bunch of trial leaders and organizers. My gratitude for the help in making it to badge completion.
Now, to find some new project, like an alt to level up or something... -
-
Got News Flash and thus MoTPN tonight on FemFury, so that makes 1306.
Aaaand.... Done! (for now)

Glad to be in such august company.
Whew, managed to get there before Issue 22.... was getting worried that I'd fall just short before the new stuff. -

Quote:The problem with defending Eminem this way, by saying that his critical intent and deeper meaning is clear if you take into account "the presentation, his own statements, tracks that came afterwards, and the whole of the work that it is in", is that a very large percentage of those who will hear his songs will be hearing one song at a time, released as a single, often on the radio or in a music video. That audience is quite justified in reading the meaning of that one song for what it says itself to them.to me and several people I've talked to what Eminem is doing is clear and obvious from the presentation, his own statements, tracks that came afterwards, and the whole of the work that it is in.
Now, if you claim that's a shallow reading, and that you always need to bring in a broader context, there's another problem. In the context of the genre of hip-hop / rap, there's lot of other artists who bring in violent and misogynistic messages seriously and earnestly. When I first hear an Eninem song, how am I to immediately know he's different from all the people in the genre I've heard before? Sure, there may be differences in presentation compared to other hip-hop artists, but that may not be obvious to those who aren't deeply into the genre.
And if Eninem is smart (and I think he is), he's got to realize the nature of the industry and the genre he's working in. He should realize that some of the audience is only going to hear singles out of context, and miss the broader message. And perhaps he's willing to take that hit, in order to tell his stories the way he wants, to the audience he wants to reach. If he didn't realize that some people would form opinions on single songs, without the context of his whole work or his personal statements, then he severely misjudged how his art would be distributed and consumed.
Quote:Should I, as writer, write in the simplest forms possible in hopes that one day they'll understand if I just simplify a little more? Or should it be the case that I be elitist and say you can only get this when you become as elite as I?
Some writers / artists create in order to provoke a reaction, any reaction. If that is your goal, than whether the audience "got the real meaning" is irrelevant. If they are talking about work, reacting to it, that's enough. If they think deeply about the work, that may be a worthwhile goal, even if they get "the wrong impression of what's really meant."
Some artists create to entertain. If that's that case, again, whether they get the "right" message matters less. The sheer numbers of human beings who consume the work and consider the time well spent is enough, whatever they think the message is. However, in this case, the artist may still be mortified / embarassed if the consumer of the work thinks that the artist is saying something the artist would find personally abhorrent or immoral.
The question of whether people are "getting what Eminem is saying" may be irrelevant, if his goal is one of the two above, to provoke or entertain.
And, of course, some writers write to communicate ideas or a point of view. If this is your goal, and not everyone gets what you are saying, then there is a choice beyond "dumbing down the work until they get it." One can always decide that the person who did not understand is not part of the target audience. If your goal is to communicate to a near-universal audience, then yes, work on simplifying your points, and making things clearer. If your goal is to reach only people who are capable of a discourse level of X or higher, or people who have a specific context of knowledge or expertise (like writing for a sub-culture or or a specific fandom or a particular professional group), then target that level.
Now, IF you find you are targeting people of a certain audience that meets your standards, and you find they aren't getting your points regularly, then, yes, it's the writer's fault. The writer has failed to meet his own, self-established goals and standards.
Basically, the dividing line between the "responsibility of the writer" and the "responsibility of the reader" is entirely set by the individual writer, at the moment he decides what his target audience is for what he's writing. -
Update: right after the TPN, got on Keyes run, and we got Avoids the Green Stuff. With MoKeyes done, that makes 1302! Just 4 more to go! I can almost taste it...
-
Just made it to 1300 tonight be being on a league that earned "Fair & Balanced" on a TPN run. (we just missed getting News Flash by seconds, sadly, as that would have gotten me MoTPN).
Yay! 1300. Glad I hit the milestone.
Now, I just need one badge each from Keyes, TPN, and Minds of Mayhem to get the Master badges on those and be done. (Avoids the Green Stuff, News Flash, and Dreamwalker). Then I'm done and completed until Issue 22...
Thanks to the badge-gathering and trial-running communities on Justice for all their help!
And special thanks to SuperGroup friend @Electroanagesia, who always is helpful when I'm looking for badges. She'll make it to 1300 soon too, I'm sure.

Quote:And then they put Nemesis in the game, just to make such intricate plots into a meme-joke for the playerbase.... so they'd never suspect the Devs actually think that way.The devs deliberately release this stuff, then claim it was an accident, because then they will encourage players to believe that it wasn't an accident, and was actually deliberately planned, and in this way convince people to promote the fact that they are more fiendishly diabolical than they actually are. This way, when an accident does happen, no one will believe they made a mistake and will thus conclude its all part of some greater plan.
In other words, its basically a Nemesis plot.
Diabolical. -
Hm. Perhaps what is more needed then is a whole series of alternate animations using wands or similar for all sorts of blast sets.
Create a blackwand-like "magic wand" and a similar "power rod device" for the more tech / science concepts. Then create 9 or so different animations which are "casting from the wand / rod" (already got at least one done with the current blackwand animation).
Then go through and at those animations as alternate animations to all the blast sets (2 alternate animations. One for Wand, one for techie Power Rod.) Then, if popular, port the animations over to buff / control sets.
This would give the option of "wand wielding wizards" with all sorts of options (fire, dark, ice, energy, etc) -
Quote:Hm. Well, not every character would be strong enough to lift big things, though. And you'd want to allow for some other concepts.I'd probably go with another inherent power in the Fitness pool,
What about a new Power Pool called "Lifting", and you could make the various powers in it have different animations / special effects.
one power for regular super-strong lifting. "Physical Might"
another for telekinetic lifting. "Telekinetic Manipulation"
another for lifting things with a tech-based beam. "Tractor Beam"
and another for moving things with a magical puff of air. "Eldritch Wind"
they could all have the same game mechanic effect. (pick up moveable object and throw it). But each could have a different animation for it, allowing for more character concepts, and people who aren't just generically "super-strong" wouldn't miss out.
Each power could be slotted with some kind of enhancement to move up from basic lifting to more impressive feats.
It's still a lot of work for the animators and such, but might fit in the powers system better that way? -
The Cosmic Merit is purty!
I think I'd keep an extra around just to have it in my inventory.
Personally, I'm not fazed by extra currencies. It gives a way to gate and segregate content to some degree. Have Vanguard Merits as a distinct currency, for example, lets the Devs have specific rewards to doing Mothership raids. Alignment Merits give you a reason to use the tip missions other than switching alignments. Empyrean Merits give a way to get those Rares and Very Rares if you are unlucky at drops, while Astrals are "cheap enough" as part of the Incarnate system that the Devs can put them as rewards to the SSAs / Apex / Tin Mage without throwing rewards out of balance.
On the one hand, I personally wouldn't mind these 3 new merits. I'm assuming that Transcendental and Celestial would be related to the next 4 Incarnate Slots unlocked, and Cosmic Merits would be tied to the Omega Slot.
However, I can see that implementing these merits could be a turn off to some of the player base, and that does worry me. But the Devs may see a balance need to use these new Merit types, in order to ensure that it's easier to progress in the upper Incarnate slots by doing higher level Trials, instead of just doing BAF over and over again.
Glad I'm not in Positron's shoes, and having to make the final decision whether to use these Merits or not. -
Quote:I kinda like Screamy-Shouty Moriarty. It's an interesting interpretation. Calm, ultra-rational, unflappable criminal mastermind has been done before, including with Moriarty.Downsides, only two I can count. I hate, hate, hate Screamy Shouty 'Jim' Moriaty. He's far too much like Screamy Shouter Master from Doctor Who (although in fairness, he wasn't Moffat's creation). I like my masterminds clever and focused, not semi-coherent lunatics.
The way I see "Jim" Moriarty, he's very much a sociopath. And one SO clever, that he almost never fails to get what he wants. So he gets angry very easy. Dealing with stupid people can give one a short fuse, and he thinks the whole human race is stupid compared to him. And he's fond of violence and killing, making evil happen for fun (sponsoring a serial killer). He's more unstable genius and less the cold computing detached mastermind.
And it seems to me he's clever and focused when he needs to be. But when something is important to him, on a personal level, like verbally sparring with Sherlock, he has less inhibition. I theorize he never learned real emotional control, because he never had to. He almost always controls the situation, rather than controlling his own reaction to it.
At least that's how I see it. It's very much a Your Mileage May Vary. -
I'm kinda glad it's targeted AoE on my Scrapper. Gonna make use of that to slot Javelin Volley for some more Slow Resistance, to go wth Quickness and Winter's Gift and JV in ancillary pools. It's an expensive little trick, but idea of dancing back and forth on Caltrop fields while kicking Knives of Artemis in the head gives me giggles.
-
Maybe a better way to do the badge would be to complete 10 Keyes trials without your character specifically getting hit by the beam? That way you could make progress towards the badge even if someone else in the trial goofs up?

Quote:It doesn't give you any bonuses any more at 50.I just dinged 50...and noticed that I still have the Flames of Prometheus power. I thought this was supposed to go away at 50.
I'm not complaining, as I'm happy to have the +regen and +Recovery, but I'd hate to be balancing my build on a bug that will go away...
Go to your badges, there's a button you can click to cash in your Flames of Prometheus for a Notice of the Well (right under the badge for completing the Mortimer Kal SF). Not sure if you have to unlock your Alpha slot first. -
Quote:Which isn't as long standing as most people think. For the longest time it was the other way around.I really don't see a problem here besides probably the long standing figure of pink = girl, blue = boy
Apparently as late as 1900, dressmaker's guides referred to blue as the traditional girl's color (being paler) and pink being the color for boys.
And it persisted longer than that in some places at least. A 1927 news story about the Princess of Belgium being disappointed at having a female child, as she had already decorated the nursery all in pink, in anticipation of having a male heir.
So "pink for girls, blue for boys" may be under a century old.
(the fun things you learn watching QI!) -
Hm.
Superman's parenting role models: Ma and Pa Kent. Some of the best parents in all of fiction. I think Clark is going to be a good parent. Biggest likely downside will be if we assume the most likely scenario and Lois Lane is the mother, the we have two very "career-focused" parents. And that can be rough to grow up with.
Extra upside: Pretty likely Batman is going to be the godfather. Uncle Bruce is going to be good for some awesome childhood memories, and some great birthday gifts.
Wonder Woman's natural empathy and wisdom means she's bound to be a amazing parent in the long run. Some obstacles along the way, though. No role models in how to raise boys. In fact, she had no socialization with other kids her age growing up. She'll have to do a lot of reading up, and ask for advice from other parents. Which she's smart enough to do.
I would think that Wonder Woman's son is likely to grow up to be very much like Joss Whedon. Very respectful of strong female figures. But also very well nurtured, encouraged to follow his natural talents, and good at getting into other people's heads. Well, he'd be like Joss Whedon, only with enough combat training for a special forces commando. Diana isn't gonna skip on the exercise and self-discipline for her kid. -
Quote:I'd consider Genesis to be a single tree based on your own character's archetype, you build up abilities that enhance the core element of your AT's inherent powers or the fixed powerset types of that AT. A Scrapper may get enhanced critical chances against Bosses, EBs and AVs instead of just limited to 10% for Lts+. A Defender could gain more scaling buffs when their team-mates take damage.
I really, really like the idea of having at least one slot in the Incarnate tree that increases the specialization and differentiation between ATs. Genesis would make sense, as it could be referring to "how you started before you were an Incarnate"
Especially if it boosted caps a bit.
My ideas would be something like this:
Tanker Core: increases Resistance cap by 1 to 4 percent, minor resist/DEF buff
Tanker Radial: increases HP cap, minor HP buff
Brute Core: Increased Damage Cap, minor increase to Fury generation
Brute Radial: Increased HP Cap, minor HP buff
Scrapper Core: Increased Damage Cap
Scrapper Radial: Increased Critical chances
Defender Core: Increased buff strength (similar to Power Boost but lower)
Defender Radial: Minor team buff auras with zero endurance cost
Blaster Core: Increased Damage Cap, range buff
Blaster Radial: Increased Defiance Buffs
Controller Core: Increased control duration / increased chance for Overpower
Controller Radial: Boosted Containment damage
Dominator Core: Increased control duration
Dominator Radial: Increased damage cap and damage buff while in Domination
Corruptor Core: Increased Scourge damage
Corruptor Radial: Increased buff / debuff strength
Stalker Core: Increased Damage cap
Stalker Radial: Self buff (Heal, +DEF, +Resist, +Dmg) for a few seconds after entering Hidden status. (makes Placate an improved tool for self-protection and setting up attacks)
Mastermind Core: Increased Supremacy aura
Mastermind Radial: Increased cap to pet damage -
Quote:You only get the A-merit the first time you run each arc.I just got one each for running the who will die arcs. That's 4 a merits in a row in under 2 hurs. Now I happen to be saving up for bigger fish but isnt that 2 Lott 7.5s in under. 2 hours per character?
That's a lot of loot to make in a short time. Was this a bug or is this how they are normally bonusing
After that, you can get 1 A-merit a week for running ANY one of the chapters. But only one a week.
So, after the initial surge of "I got one A-merit for each arc, yay!" then you are time-gated to one a week. -
Quote:Train B on average leaves about 1 minute and 49 seconds after Train A throughout the daily schedule? Here's a riddle. A man has two girlfriends, one that lives in town A, and the other that lives in town B. He goes to the train station every weekend and catches the next train that is heading for either town. Even though he arrives at the train station at random times each weekend, and trains leave for town A and town B every twenty minutes, he finds he is seeing one girlfriend ten times more often than the other. If he does in fact arrive at the train station at genuinely random times, how is it possible he isn't going to each town about fifty percent of the time?
(i.e. there's a narrower window of "time after Train A but before Train B" than there is of "after Train B but before Train A")
Which I assume leads to the metaphor that the Train to Solotown is always departing, while the train to Leagueville often leaves you waiting at the station a while. -

You earned the Assistant badge.
So you had already run the WST once this week and gotten the big bonus then.
(or at least the game thinks you already ran the WST earlier in the week).
