Quote:Heals tend to be very useful in the first 20 levels or so of the game, but past that buffs and debuffs are far more significant for providing support. That said, even in the late game heals can be very useful, but mostly as quick fix for what gets past the other defenses. There are also a few late game events where healing, especially AoE heals, trump buffing and debuffing for support purposes.Thank you for the advise. I have made several toons since I started playing. It seems there are no bad builds, just better ones if solo or teamed in my opinion. The "healer" in this game can be very flexible. I played a dedicated healer in another game and my eyes never left the health box. I got annoyed that I missed a majority of the game and heaven forbid 'gasp' someone died. This game is nice since the play style is mixed and kinda flexible. You do have the standard "meat shield" tank, but he/she has alot more survivability with inspirations and backup heals.
By the way, if anyone wishes to show this newb "the ropes", I play as @elmwar on the justice server. Side note: the main reason I choose this server is that is the name of the town my wife and I are purchasing our new home.
Hamidon raids and the Keyes trial are the most significant in that regard, but Mothership raids also benefit from heal spam.
As for healing pets... well, Masterminds may have the most pets, and most delicate pets overall, but they also have the shortest recharge/cooldown on their summons, so it's not a big problem if their pets die. In fact their design pretty much assumes frequent resummoning of their pets. Controller pets are generally more durable, but even so they are fairly disposable.
Superteams in CoH are normally composed entirely of support ATs due to the stacking of buffs and debuffs. Green Machine IIRC was made entirely of Empathy Defenders who buffed each other to the point that they rolled along permanently at the defense and damage caps. With goods buffs and debuffs healing in itself becomes almost unnecessary*. In that respect this game is very different from just about every other MMO.
Justice is a pretty fun and active server. i have several alts there at various levels, but right now when i play on Justice it's usually either on my lowbie (12-ish as of right now) Dual Pistols/Energy Blaster or my 50 Force Field/Radiation Defender.

i'm glad you're enjoying the game so far; here's few tips and tricks to make some things easier: since you mostly use the mouse making macros can be very handy since it places a clickable button on your tray.
Here's a few i use:
/macro help "assist" (Targets targeted teammate's target.)
/macro find "targetcustomnext blah" (Will automatically target anything in sight with "blah" in its name. You can edit blah to whatever you want by right-clicking the macro and choosing edit.)
/macro info "info" (Calls up info window for whatever is currently targeted. If nothing is targeted it calls your info window.)
There are some much more detailed guides to macros in the guides section of the forum.
Also, here's a slash command that might help you with health bars:
/optionset showvillainbars 1
With showvillainbars set to 1 you will always see the health and endurance bars above all players and NPCs/pets even when they're not targeted. That might help you a bit with tracking friend and enemy health levels.
*Empathy has the most healing type powers, but it also has some of the most powerful AoE and single target buffs in the game. The balancing factor is that most of those powers are on rather long recharge timers. -

On second thought maybe the Dr. Bronner Character Manager needs a little more debugging. Congratulations on the 48 months anyway. -
Sensible enough rules, Ping. It makes the channel sound like a worthwhile resource despite the limited number of global channels we can join.
So...
i used to be on some other channel over a year ago, but at this point i barely recall what it was. The Oberfuhrermod there silenced me for some flippant response to someone else's joke (i'm guessing, but since he silenced me without saying anything then or afterward it's hard to be sure) and i was silenced for five days until another mod asked me why i was silenced and unsilenced me. At the time i suggested he leave me silenced because i wanted to see how long i would be silenced for making a quip that contained nothing innately offensive. After a few more days of quietly watching der Oberfuhrermod silencing and kicking many others for offenses that seemed minor at worst i decided the channel wasn't enjoyable anymore and quit. (To be fair, there were a number of people who clearly deserved silencing or kicking, just not nearly as many who were.)
When the head of a channel starts meting out punishments that seem arbitrary and excessive when not appearing to be based on favoritism it's time to move on. -
Quote:i still have an alt with the Malaise pants and several with a transparent torso. A Malaise top would've been nice, or even a non-tucked in version of the pants, but maybe they'll available again at some point. *crosses fingers*This reminds me of the old skirt bug that happened a few years ago.. And one day I ran into a dude who still had their bugged skirt-costume in play. They chose the slitted-sides, but due to the bug, the front and back of the skirt were slitted and it looked pretty cool.
I asked them about it and they said "ya, Ive been keeping this costume ever since the bug was fixed, but can never change it in the tailor xD"
The transparent torso bug was great for a ghostly character and a few other concepts. Stone Armor brute with transparent torso looks really good, for example.
Quote:Usually it has to do with certain pieces being renamed or moved to a different section. The only costume piece that I know of that's been completely removed are the "Malaise" pants. Search around in the tailor, and you should be able to find everything again.
Only sometimes. Most of the time if a section has been reorganized you'll have to pay full price or use a token to restore the piece. The most recent example that comes to mind is when variant versions of the cat and wolf tails were added. -
<Redacted>!
<Redacted> the <redacted>, but only when <redacted>.

Quote:i've actually had a few male alts receive lewd comments in the past. The first time was back around late 2004/early 2005. i was playing a D3 whose theme was being a reformed Eidolon, so he was wearing all buckled leather. (There being no Chaos Leather pattern back then.) It was just one suggestive and appreciative comment though, so i shrugged it off and continued on. If i'd been followed and/or harassed through tells i would've used /ignore and /petition. Oddly enough i've very rarely been harassed on male or female alts on any server despite frequently receiving compliments for my costumes. Occasional suggestive and appreciative comments don't bother me as long as they're not too crude, and even then i usually see it as an opportunity for an amusing reply.Make a server only female, there will only be males playing on it.
I rarely have problems with being harrassed by guys when I play, and those that do, I put on ignore/report. Course I probably don't get a lot of people messing with me because 90% of my toons are male toons.
Quote:Heh, oddly enough I've heard people spamming their "All female SG" over the channels before.. And until I read your post, I always thought they were just referring to the Avatar's gender.
The fact that they might have meant real-life gender really never crossed my mind until now.. They certainly did not make it clear in their ads. -

What's a BMT?
Bacon, mutton, and tomato?
That does sounds pretty tasty, so i guess it would rule. -
Quote:Thank you.Totally agree with you. Would certainly love to see that feature at some point. But like I said, the challenge is in figuring out how to do it without spending all our collective resources for months. We'll keep looking into it.
Y'know the thought occurs to me that if you compare the game at launch with Praetoria and what's been shown of Issue 21 that City of Heroes has very nearly become City of Heroes 2 just through the additions and upgrades to the game's engine. If you can get the resources to do an upgrade to the character and NPC models similar to the environments we will have pretty much arrived at City of Heroes 2. -

Quote:Yep, my original response stands:I thought you meant they'd have to change the whole skeleton to add figners
Quote:*facepalm*
Adding animated fingers means altering the current skeletons. You really have no clue what you're talking about, do you?
NOW i remember why i hadn't bothered responding to a GT post for over a year. It's like attempting to converse with a particularly repetitive and annoying chatbot. -
Quote:Okay, this is a suggestion i can support. i don't know how easy or practical it is with current resources, but i like it.People who are focusing on the fingers are kinda missing the point here.
The models as a whole are antiquated. They worked very well for their time but now with all the newer graphical updates the older player models are REALLY showing their age. They need to be updated. I don't mean whole new skeletons, with whole new animations, that would be nice but probably unrealistic. I'd be happy with higher poly count on our base models. The game has a built in LoD system that will already down grade the models for slower systems, I'm just asking to go in the other direction for people with higher end machines. I want to see less boxy appendages and more curvier features. Same with all the old costume textures, there should be a higher res option for all the old looks as well.
That is a great deal more feasible with the current system and a much needed upgrade to the game's graphics at this vital stage.
Your opening post, on the other hand, was not something i felt any urge to support. In my opinion if your first post had been this one it would have been more constructive and well-received. -
Quote:*facepalm*No, I mean they just need to add new hands to the current skeletons.
Adding animated fingers means altering the current skeletons. You really have no clue what you're talking about, do you?
You can create hand models that appear to have separate fingers, but they're still just mittens with no independent articulation unless you modify the character skeletons to have separate "bones" for each finger to be animated. -
So you're saying the current skeletons have had the "bones" for fingers since launch and they just never got around to animating them? Interesting. i could swear that contradicts a Dev post from some years ago.

Very nice! Keep it up, your videos are awesome and you're definitely an asset to the community in a way that few can match.
Now if only we could convince PS/NCsoft to hire you! -

NASA has basically been faffing about and retired the shuttle without any definite replacement. Most of the designs i've seen being worked on suggest that they're planning to eventually go back to a more standard style of rocket rather than a spaceplane type of craft.
Edit: A large part of their plan apparently is to start using private launch companies, like SpaceX. This could possibly be a very good thing, hiring private companies to provide lift to orbit. -
*starts running through the thread flailing like a muppet*
*screeches to a halt*
i, uh, i thought there wouldn't be anyone still here. How embarrassing.
*starts reading the new posts*
Mmmm, good luck with sussing out the problem, Ironblade and Texas_Justice. Although i suspect it'll turn out to be pretty simple. *Groucho Marx eyebrow waggle*
-
*facepalm*
*reads OP again*
*double facepalm*
Y'know, these posts make me think of this video.
Anyway, you're a bit late to the party. People have already posted their suggestions for designs in the original City Life - CoH & CoV General Discussions thread about the Titan Weapons.
Still, the more the merrier, eh? -
i would prefer if forum posting rights were not free for all, but required at least being a Premium customer of one of the lower tiers.

Quote:Except that spandex is already in the game. As has been repeatedly pointed out we have tights with many, many different patterns that can superimposed. Honestly, besides variations in colour scheme spandex outfits tend to be pretty similar. When we do get new non-spandex pieces added they Devs also frequently add new patterns to the tights options based on the new pieces. (Although not every new set, like Steampunk, has pieces that lend themselves to new tights patterns.) There aren't many ways to add much more to tights. We started out with an extremely varied selection of spandex options as it was.Yeah but you know what's the same for all those heroes except for Iron Man and the Hulk? They all wear spandex! The variety is to tell them apart and illustrate their powers or background, but the basic spandex look is still there.
Villains vary a lot more so than heroes in comic books. You have just as many spandex-clad villains (so very many examples) as you do criminal kingpins in suits (Lex Luthor, Kingpin), monstrous villains (The Lizard, Gorilla Grodd), and villains in power armor (Dr. Doom, Iron Monger).
So yes you have many variations in superheroes and villains, but one of the staples of comic book heroes and villains (what this game is supposed to be based on) is spandex.
No it didn't. It showed that no matter what he thinks CoH is about, at its core, it is about comic book superheroes. It has strayed from that with all this crazy glowy mythical armor.
Not to mention that current superhero comics don't have very much in the way of plain spandex wearers. i suppose if it was advertised as a 50s to 70s superheroes themed MMO then your argument would make more sense, but even by the 80s a lot of superheroes were going less and less for the spandex option.
What, exactly, would you add to tights that isn't already there? 220 subtle variations on vertical striping patterns to allow exactly the right sort of stripes for every outfit? -
*starts to troll thread and changes mind because the current Dev and Community teams are just that awesome*
Yeah, they've been pretty cool. They've been showing up at a wide variety of community events on various servers. So much so that i have to wonder how they find the time to do everything. -
Most likely yes. Why? Because i've always wanted to smack things around with an ocean liner.
i try every new set that comes out, but i'll have to wait until i can actually play Titan Weapons before i'll know whether i'll take it to 50 and/or remake any of my alts with this set. The addition of the Titanic as a weapon would be a check in the "will play to 50" column.
