  1. When I plug it into Mid's it shows 75% s/l/e/n defense, 30% above the soft cap. But it looks to use roughly similar sets to what my Claws/Willpower Scrapper uses to get a "mere" 45% defense.

DO I have something turned on in Mid's that I should turn off? Is there some error or am I misunderstanding? Do you really have 75% defense?

  6. Two or three paragraphs of normal text in the Suggestions forum, with a single hotlink to another COH thread (outside that forum) that had given me the idea.

This thread, in fact. Which, if you're reading this, worked this time.
  7. I like Fire/Fire/Pyre too; one of my most-played characters sports those sets. But there's no way I would call that combo "tough as all hell." "Tough enough, with sets, to get by in most content" is more like it. Healing Flames can fix a lot of boo-boos.

More to the point, for some kinds of fights, you can't make Fire tough enough, no matter how much you spend, because it doesn't have the DDR.

Personally, if you already have an SS/FA Brute, I'd consider the farming angle amply covered. Regardless of powersets, your Tanker can farm by opening his e-mail and selecting whatever the Brute sent him.

It's still possible to make a tough Tanker with semi-respectable damage, of course. What (else) interests you about Tankers?

I regarded the HO exploit (as described by Castle) as something I myself didn't want to do. That was my choice. I am not going to call players who used it themselves names, however.

Are you using a different definition of "exploitive?" (I would have said "exploitative," but that's a nitpick). I don't think "turning on your primary and secondary powers" meets most definitions of "exploit."
  11. I can't read them either, on my new 23" monitor. But I can read the channel names in the little tab. So I usually wind up more or less randomly hitting the microbuttons until the tab reads what I want, and then using that channel until something forces me to probe the microbuttons again. I'll have to try clicking the channel name for the pop-up menu, sounds interesting.

Invincible pets? Ah, you're talking about Phantom Army?

Yeah, PA is pretty game-bending, if not game-breaking. But its' not in a debuff set.

If you're talking about Illusion/Rad Controllers, just come out and say it. There are a LOT of buff/debuff sets that are orders of magnitude less powerful than Ill/Rad, and it sounded like you were talking about them.
  13. Yeah, that's it -- the displayed crafting cost changes, but if you actually note the influence totals before and after, you realize the full cost was deducted -- there's no discount. Most of us have so much influence we never noticed. I wonder how long it's been this way -- has it EVER worked?
  14. Remember also some names are reserved for Dev-created characters and unavailable to the rest of us. Frostfire is the famous example. Are you sure the ones you want don't belong to current (or are reserved for future) dev-created characters?

Which I've never seen before. I was logged in, and my post was not especially long. The only place I can think of where it might have had special characters was the link I'd inserted. But it had ONE link -- to another thread on the COH/V message boards. I've posted multiple links in one post in the past without issue.

Even more annoyingly, when I hit the "back" button it erased everything I'd typed and gave me a blank box. Very, very annoying.
  16. Is there a place to ask about / report message board bugs -- not bugs in the game itself?

I doubt the Gameplay / Technical Issues & Bugs forum is the right place, as this has nothing to do with the game itself, only the forum software.

    Any ideas?

So making the case that SD was monstrously overpowered is a case of exaggeration; nothing can approach the OPness of stacked buffs and debuffs.
Uh...stacked Shields is just as good as stacked debuffs at wasting everything on the screen. You seem to be arguing that one Shield character is eclipsed by several debuffers. Well, yeah. One debuffer is eclipsed by several Shielders.

Absolutely appropriate -- Shields gets MASSIVELY more damage.

Immunity to resistance debuffs? What are you talking about?

Passive resists? Uh, when it's badly hurt -- Shields gets its resists right from the get-go, and applies them to all the damage it takes, not just the last part before defeat.

Basically /SD level survivability? Well, yeah...except for the hit points, resists, knockdown, damage debuff, and much better killing power.

Oh, that's better survivability in every situation except defense debuffs. And against defense debuffs, it has better DDR than Invulnerability -- which can be built to handle defense debuffs just fine.

Functionally, that is the same amount of difference that shield's DDR has been reduced, but in the opposite direction. Those sets would be 6 times stronger against defense debuffs than they were before while shield is now 6 times weaker.

If this is not a large change in a set's survivability, then adding that to the other sets would not be a large change. In other words, this change decreases shield's DDR in the roughly the same proportion as going from 85% resists to none. Basically, it is the same difference as a Warshade with maxed eclipse vs. a blaster with no resists.

And to those attacking me for my highly expensive builds, let me explain. I used to be an altoholic. I have filled every english-speaking server with alts. But recently, I have found myself investing in my characters. They begin as a generic concept, and as I level I make that concept stronger and flesh it out. At the same time, I begin investing resources into that character. A character of mine with a very expensive build is one that I have invested time, influence, and perhaps more importantly feeling into.

You may spit on me for having a "lamborghini", but it was easy to make the influence. Despite my dislike of this change, I have made good use of it and am now hundreds of million of inf richer (thanks lotg: defense and def/end!). Nerfing the high-end does nothing but hurt people who have devoted large amounts of time and effort towards a single character.

And shields IS less survivable than other sets. That is the way it was designed. The thing is, it still has enough survivability for most things, and unlike most builds it was consistently survivable. This change removes the consistency.
Eh. How about giving Super Reflexes Against All Odds? So that it matches Shield for damage output?

Because Shield's alleged survivability was only achieved using an exploit to make it better in every way than SR.

WITH the "nerf," Shields plunges to "very rugged" when softcapped. Sure, it's LESS rugged than SR against SOME enemies -- but it ALWAYS has more hit points and does a ton more damage.

Frankly, if they took away AAO form shields entirely, it would STILL be stronger than SR in some situations, because it has 20% more life.

This change leaves shields monstrously strong -- just not mind-bogglingly strong.

Speaking as someone with a lot of Shields characters, I say, "it's about time."

And if being adjusted relative to other sets makes you angry and makes you lose interest in your characters, stop and think about how SR players have felt since the HO exploit for Shields was discovered. The shoe is simply on the other foot this time.

    Tights!

Full mask options -- the ones that cover the whole head -- should be able to have the same patterns as chest tights. Currently they have only mask-type patterns and it's impossible to make a character whose head is patterned like his upper body.

Also full mask (and other masks if possible) should have a "sleek" option to match sleek tights -- currently you can make shiny tights on the body but only matte tights on the head.
  21. Okay, I am indeed seeing the bug you describe. I wonder if it's always been that way?
  22. Ah, not part of a new Street Walking set?
  23. My thoughts:

If you like strong stories, it's a bit frustrating that the story text is only easily viewable by the team leader. Remind your teammates to go to the nav bar mission button and read the mission text and if there are parts they can't read as the mission develops, you can paste them into chat yourself.

I'm much less familiar with V-side. So I'll recommend the Mission Architect stories instead. While lots of people use Architect only for farms, there are a ton of fun and interesting stories in the MA if you look for them.

A good place to start is in the MA forum. The stickied threads are a gold mine, but don't be shy -- if you put up a thread asking for ineresting stories you'll get lots of suggestions.

I'll start -- look for everything by @TheCheshireCat.

Well, it was definitely in that context that Castle spoke. For years it's been specifically mentioned in lots of Shield threads that using HOs to enhance the DDR of Active Defense is precisely the sort of unintended thing Castle warned us might get fixed one day.

edited to add: as far as "never read anything," it's on the Paragonwiki HO page in bold:

_Castle_ once posted about this issue:

Slotting enhancements into powers they were not meant to be slottable in is an 'exploit.' We've pretty much firmly established that. The question isn't if something being abused in this manner will be changed, it's a matter of when. To be on the safe side, you should never use a Debuff enhancement to Buff a power and vice versa.

No, Active Defense will still provide decent DDR. Shields as a whole will still be among the best sets for DDR.

What it won't have is the same DDR as Super Reflexes but be better in almost every other way on top of that.
