agree on Nemesis as overused. Though I kind of like it.
Underused: also agree about the Korean-based W.I.S.D.O.M. (gotta ask: why do they have an English name?)
Also underused, and I've not seen him mentioned in the thread, is Ajax, initially the only known survivor of Omega Team. Come on, that has got to beg for a follow up story of coming to terms and moving on. -
not for use by postal workers and meter readers. At least, not if they value their lives.

I've got two stand out concepts, but I'll just share one for the moment. Ray Gunn (energy/energy blaster) has received a lot of positive feedback for both story and costumes. You've probably seen him before over on the costume thread:
Gordon Rodgers, a dedicated fan of old-time serial movie sci-fi, is living his dream. Calling in several markers, he was able to obtain a powered undersuit, the latest in retro-engineered Ritki technology. In addition, he spent a sizable chunk of his modest wealth to purchase the rights to Ray Gunn, a nearly forgotten "space ranger" serial movie hero. Combining these, he has rebooted the Ray Gunn franchise, becoming the living embodiment of the character. He deliberately targets villain groups that draw parallels to his character's adventures. Clockwork, Pumicites, and Sky Raiders he has referred to as "killer robots", "alien monsters", and "space pirates". He's probably pushing it by calling Trolls "green men from Mars" and is definitely wacko for calling the Banished Pantheon "space zombies". Still, his exploits are gaining fans, and his small franchise of products is taking off. In truth, he cares little for the money, He just wants a new generation to appreciate the great old heroes.
(Another part of his concept that I dropped from the latest retelling of his backstory, because it wouldn't fit, was the idea that he was testing various retro-futuristic costumes over his powered undersuit, including a reproduction of the original serial costume, with the intent of adding these variations to future collectable action figures). -

You know how many Penguin clones that would let loose in the Rogue Islands? -
Quote:Now that's an idea I could get behind.I've made a few suggestions about this before - especially moving the AE from the RWZ to the D where it belongs
And yes, there have been some improvements along the way. The ski slopes for one, and I believe the rikti monkey fights and the vaults were both added. I known War Witch was. But there's not been a total overhaul, and I'm not certain there needs to be. Its still worlds better than that dark, tin warehouse that was usually shunned. -
umm, did you ever get to see the old Paragon dance club? Pocket D is bleeding edge design for years to come next to what used to be.

Do you known how to operate System Restore? If not, its a feature in more recent versions of Windows that allows a reset to an earlier point if something goes bad, effectively neutralizing the bad software. There are some auto-saves that can be accessed by the calendar in S.R., and you'd select one from before when the trouble started. The trick is getting to S.R. when Windows is inaccessible.
I'm hoping this will work for you. These is not my instructions, I was just aware that it could be done. I pulled these from the web. http://www.internetfixes.com/questio...er/IF00328.htm
Run System Restore From The Safe Mode Command Prompt.
System restore is extremely handy when things go wrong. However, there are occasions when trying to restore the system from within Windows fails and you may have to resort to trying to recover your system using System Restore from the Safe Mode Command Prompt.
To start system restore from the safe mode command prompt proceed as follows:
1. Boot your PC
2. During the boot sequence constantly tap the F8 key on your keyboard
3. If all goes well a type written menu will appear
4. From this menu select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option
5. If asked to log on as Administrator, then do so. If you have not set an administrator password then simply press Enter
6. The Command Prompt should now appear
7. Now type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and then press Enter
8. The System Restore Wizard should now open and you can select a suitable restore point. -
you've not met our waitresses, cashiers, and receptionists yet, have you? Be prepared to be called every affectionate name they can think of: sweetie, honey, love, dahlin', babe, doll, sugar, dear, etc. Its always funny to see someone new to the South react with surprise to what is elsewhere normally reserved for a close friendship.

Anything I should know about as far as social rules? Do's/ Not Do's?
A slightly belated welcome to the boards then. The obvious answer to your red-side inquiry, since you love RP, is to drop a villain into the Virtue server, home to the craziest RPers in the multiverse. You'll probably find a good RP villain group to hook up with when hanging out in Virtue's Pocket D. -
Quote:oh, there are starship battles. See this video from beta days for demos and dev explanantions.... Archive, my main? Based on Data. I'm a Trekkie and I missed this? I'm slipping in my old age. One question: Is this all Away team, or is this also some ship piloting and fighting? Because if it's all individual character stuff, I'm actually not that inclined to play.

Quote:So in short, "all y'all" is the plural of "y'all".Don't be a hater, Z_M!
"All y'all" is a fine old Southern usage that is merely more expansive than a simple "y'all". "Y'all might referto the two or three people there in front of you, but "all y'all" means "including your friends and family".
side note: I think one of the most charmingly humorous points to living in the South is to see transplanted Yankees, er, Northerners, and even foreigners start unconsciously using "y'all" after about 3 months here.
Now if all y'all will excuse me, I gotta go git a moonpie and an RC, or maybe one of them orange coke colers. -

Quote:Would you please clarify "jousting"? I understand the medieval word, but for some reason have never heard it in gaming context during 5 years of MMO gaming. Now, I intend to use this list as a guide for things I might try and build. Part of my bias though is no jousting. I hate that kinda crap and just don't want to deal with it. I guess this means I am probably limited to a ranged toon of some sort. (Don't let this limit you in listing a joust toon as your favorite, I'm just musing 'aloud' here I suppose) A couple of the prime candidates I suppose would be a spines/regen scrapper, blaster or stalker.

Good perspective, S_T.
My church has had a significant mission and relief effort to Haiti for years. In fact, a support team just flew back hours before the quake hit. We've not heard from the permanent director who remained down there. No one's panicked yet, since we all know how bad communications can be in such a disaster. Assuming she's made it through, we'll be utilizing her and her staff to coordinate our relief efforts.
The problems seem to be far more dramatic in the south part of the island. My sister-in-law has a sibling with family living on the northern arm of the island and she was able to call. Remarkable, considering how difficult living conditions are around there under normal circumstances. They were rattled, but the damage up that way was minimal in comparison. -
After playing with some of the physics games (World of Goo, Crayon Physics) my sometimes CoH buddy convinced me to re-enlist in the WoW ranks on his Ally guild. Problem is, my 80 death knight is a Horde on a different server. I added up all the costs for converting him to new server Alliance side and...
...Sigh. I'm working on a new Ally death knight. The cost would have been roughly the better part of the price of an MMO expansion. Now if some bright MMO shop were to decide that in their expansion the player's characters could switch sides whenever they liked all for that initial expansion cost, imagine how cost effective that would be!
So meanwhile we play both while we wait for the release of some of the other MMO to replace our WoW time. We both think Star Trek and DCUO might work. Of course, we'll be here for Going Rogue. Not giving up on CoH. -
or, have the events ramp up. Don't have everything from day one. If you intend a 3 week Winter event, have items that appear in Week 1, items for week 2, and of course, items for week 3. That way interest is maintained for those that play all three weeks, and there's still a week 3 with everything for those who've been traveling.

Quote:Interesting article. The idea that I'd outbid the $1 in the scenario blows my mind, until you throw in a little "pie in the sky": suggest that the winner of the $1 might receive interest or other monitary bonuses for the next 5 years, but no promises and no commitments to how much more if it does happen. Just the suggestion of $1 turning into something more down the road will have folks speculating to $20 in no time. And you've promised nothing.Reminds me of an article I read this weekend about "Escalation of Commitment"

The market's always tweaking things and coming out with the "latest and greatest", but are there any new advancements, things we've not seen that might be coming out by early 2nd quarter that would suggest one wait to get a vid card?
I'm toying with replacing my rig, too, and although I know legacy and business systems pretty well, I'm not so much up on bleeding edge gaming stuff. In addition to Going Rogue, I'm looking to tinker with several of the new MMO's and expansions on the horizon (Star Trek, DC Universe, Star Wars, etc.) so I'm wondering how the cards stack up to those games special needs as well (such as je-saist's comment "The GTX card isn't DX11 / OpenGL 3.2 compatible". that kind of info is quite helpful) -
Quote:yes, exactly. That's a good comparison. And I was only considering the arenas, not the PvP zones, though if there was some way to make those skill-based, I'd be there too.Actually, Rodoan, that would be an interesting Arena Team idea, much like IROC racing; everyone races identical cars.
Also, I remembered after I posted previously that WoW has created arena tournaments similar to what I described, so I want to be fair by stating I was aware of those. However, I had the idea for CoH long before WoW's version, which, as I understand it, you pay a fee and role a whole different character to arena tournament in WoW. The concept I was expressing would use your own character, but use the "locker room" to change to a standardized PvP setup. Once done for the evening, a trip back through the locker room would reinstate your PvE settings. -

Yes, I'd PvP if PvP were better.
I did a lot of it on WoW and found it more exciting than anything else I did. The only thing that ticked me off was gear twinks. I played so much better than a lot of them, but because they'd camped out the fishing hat for 52 weeks or whatever, all my efforts couldn't penetrate their armor. I'd even have some stand there not playing while I attacked, just to prove their "superiority". Strip us to our skivvies and I'd pwn their miserable posteriors.
So I guess what I'm saying is find the way to allow skill, rather than enhancements to be the telling factor. Have the devs create a "locker room" where the character is stripped of every enhancement and dons a "wardrobe" of his selections from a pre-ordained set for his class created by the devs. Everyone has access to his/her archetype set pieces and can mix and match within that selection to their heart's content. Give each character three "uniforms", or pre-set enhancement selections, so that you can arrange and save your enhancement settings days before you battle. With everyone given access to the full pool of their archetypes enhancements strictly within the arena, then even the enhancement choices you make become a test of skill, rather than endurance waiting for that rare drop that no one can beat. -
The few times I've made them, its been either concept or tactics related.
Concept: once felt my all-guys stunt pilot SG, Flying Circus, needed a break from the relentless Y chromosome. So I made Memphis Belle. (And deleted her after a relatively short time because it was totally freaking out my lifelong friend that I "was" a girl. But I always saw Belle as just another character, not an opening up to my supposed feminine side.)
Tactics: over on WoW, I had a 19 twink Alliance shaman for PvP battlegrounds. Those who've played the game know that means it was a Draenai. So I could either go thundering down the field in an oversized barrel-chested monstrosity of masculinity, or I could create the much more diminutive female version, with exactly the same abilities, but much more likely to be overlooked sneaking down the far side of the field. And underestimated. I found all too often the "male" toons came at me like I was not a fighter. Big mistake. I got a ton of honor points that way. -
ZachsMind, I seem to recall hearing or reading somewhere around the time of HeroCon that there is indeed to be more Level 50 content around the time of Going Rogue, possibly part of the actual expansion. In fact, I'm fairly sure it was expressed as significant Level 50 content. But no talk of additional levels.
Help me out, guys and gals. Anyone remember which dev spilled this, and where? Was it Posi? -
Quote:Ah, Zombie, if you'd not turned off your rep, I'd be giving you a + right now. That's good info, especially the last paragraph.Lest somewhat take what you say in jest as gospel, let me point out, for those who don't know, that when GMs (Game Masters) enter the game, they have to chose a Hero or Villain avatar just like everyone else. Only, they have the special GM/Dev/Mod flag that allows them to enter the zone of any faction/alignment. That's been in place since CoV and is not new.
Usually, a GM will take on the avatar of a Police Drone, this way it's apparent that this is a GM. Also, only GMs/Devs/Mods can have PCs in the game with an underscore, so any real GM will have a name that beings with "GM_". If someone say's they're a GM and they don't have that underscore, it's a player spoofing them and that player should be /petitioned immediately.
A funny/frustrating thing about GMs taking on a hero or villain PC is that if the GM is not that familiar with CoH (NCSoft has a GM 'pool' that provides GM services for all their games such as Guild Wars and Aion), they may not realize that you have to enable cross-alignment chat for a hero to speak to a villain (as what needs to be done in Co-Op zones or PvP zones). So, it's been known for a GM to show up in a villain's mission after being summoned by /petition, and not 'hear' what you're saying since they don't have villain chat enabled. And they think they're being ignored and leave. If that ever happens to you, get on your global or help channel and ask someone playing a hero to send that GM a /tell to enable their villain chat.
