Star Trek Online
There is a thread about this in the Comic Book culture part of the boards, but I was just wondering if anyone here from Protector has tried or planning on trying Star Trek Online?
I think I will give it a try. I know that they have put in some changes that have upset the player base. (Hummm imagine Cryptic doing something like that?) But from the most part it looks like a fun game. I doubt that I will get a subscription and most likely just pick up game cards to play the game when I want a change. But I was just wondering if anyone else has tried or is going to try the game out. |

I know that I will have to try it out. I just don't know when that'll be. I want to wait a bit to see what the response is from others , but from what I see it looks like a good game.

I thought about trying it out until I heard that they're doing lifetime subscriptions like with CO.
If somebody you're arguing with goes off the deep end, don't follow.
I'd like to try it out, but I'm with the group that is waiting for a free trial. I've gotten to where I hate to buy a game without trying it out first. I guess that comes from buying several that I ended up loathing.

Tried it and liked it.
I bought the digital edition pre-order on the weekend and got the lifetime membership.
I did the calculations on the lifetime membership and it worked out to about the same as 16 months of monthly payments.
I've always been a Star Trek fan. I've been collecting the books since the early 1980's (I have almost all of them) and i also played the old FASA role playing game. (I even have a few of my old game miniatures left).

Considering the recent implosion over in CO, I'm not inclined to put much of my time into another Cryptic product.
i'll throw this out there...
any interest in forming a protector based fleet?
keepin the Protector family together

The most recent CAD comic pokes great fun at SO.

With the whole Champions drama going on, I think I will wait a couple of months. It looks pretty cool though.

But essentially the City on the Edge of Never is cool and there are several other cool episodes.

I picked up the game on Tuesday and played a bit Wednesday. Ensign Nylonus is now the Captain of the U.S.S. Freem.
And I've set my phasers to: FABALOUS! ! !
There is a City of chat channel. In the channel tab type COX as the fleet name to join. This seems a little more active than the PARAGON fleet channel.

... Archive, my main? Based on Data. I'm a Trekkie and I missed this? I'm slipping in my old age. One question: Is this all Away team, or is this also some ship piloting and fighting? Because if it's all individual character stuff, I'm actually not that inclined to play.

The game is fun. I enjoy the space battles. I went with an Escort ship (which is smaller and has more fire power) as it seemed the most blaster type of ship they have. There are also Cruisers which act more like tanks, where they can take more of a pounding. The third type is your Science, this ship's primary role is to buff and debuff enemies.
A basic mission might run something like this. You get a communication from a contact at Starfleet to go to planet X and report back. So off you head to the section of space that has your mission. As you near the X system you get a pop up that ask if you want to enter into the system (enter your mission instance). Then you are given a cut scene of your ship coming out of warp into the system. (Yes it is very very cool looking and hasn't gotten old for me yet.)
Then a communication comes up form one of your bridge officers about what why Starfleet has sent you here in the first place. Lets say that first you need to fight off 4 Klingon ships. So you fly around till you find your enemies and blast them. Now once you have done this, the mission might ask you to beam down to the planet and investigate why the Klingon's were here in the first place.
This puts you in your instanced away mission, which could be a small open map, cave map, or tech base map. There is another cut scene that shows you and your team beaming down into the instance. Your away team is made up of you and your bridge officers (a total of 4 NPCs) that have special skills and abilities that you can use. The mission goals could be to clear the map or click glowies and such. Once you are finished with the mission goals you communicate back to Starfleet and warp out and on to the next mission.
Now that is a very, very basic outline of how a rather simple mission is in the game.
I do enjoy playing the game. I haven't tried teaming yet. I am not a fan of the "open teaming" system that they have. From what I hear basicly anyone can join your team if they are in the same planet system with the same mission. I am also not a fan of this one server system.
Is the game perfect? No. Missions are buggy. Server stability is an issue at the moment. I would give the game an overall C+ grade (or a 3 star) rating. A Star Trek fan might give a higher score, as I am sure that I have missed out on some hidden nuggets or lore and Easter Eggs in the game.
It's not enough to pull me from CoX or Lord of the Rings Online.

On one occasion, I was thrown onto a team with 2 other people. After we (and I stress WE there) finished 3 of the 5 objectives listed, the leader (which is the first person in the instance) booted me from the team. I don't know if it was done accidentally or on purpose but when this happens you get booted out of that instance and have to start over again. It was annoying, but not a big issue as it gave me a chance to get some good loot on my own.
On another occasion, I had started a mission, and had a couple people join me. They then left right after we engaged the first attack wave. The following attack wave was based on having 3 ships not one in the team. It was a good day to die. Repeatedly. Once I exited the mission and re-entered it, it reset but I still had to redo a part of it.
That being said however, I've also enjoyed more than a few good "open teams".

But as much as I like it, I won't be abandoning CoX either.
