Computer won't boot after windows update

I turned off my computer last night, and got the "Install new updates before shutting down" prompt, so I did.

Today when i got home from work, I turned on my rig and it went to the screen that talks about windows being improperly shut down last time, and gives the options of starting with "safe mode","last known working config", "start windows normally" etc. At this time my back-lit keyboard is not lit, so I cannot scroll up to any of the choices, so it automatically defaults to "start windows normally".

Which brings me back to this screen again, the only difference is there is a quick flash of a blue screen before it gets there. It's been running in this cycle for about a half hour now, Hard shutting makes no difference either.

I can get my keyboard to work for a second when it prmpts me to hit TAB for the post screen, or DEL for setup. Then the keyboard goes dark. Howver I have no technical knowledge whatsoever so I wouldn't even know what to do on those screens.

You fine, kind, brillaint Heroes and villains have helped me numerous times in the past, I only pray that you can talk me through this one!

Do you known how to operate System Restore? If not, its a feature in more recent versions of Windows that allows a reset to an earlier point if something goes bad, effectively neutralizing the bad software. There are some auto-saves that can be accessed by the calendar in S.R., and you'd select one from before when the trouble started. The trick is getting to S.R. when Windows is inaccessible.

Run System Restore From The Safe Mode Command Prompt.
System restore is extremely handy when things go wrong. However, there are occasions when trying to restore the system from within Windows fails and you may have to resort to trying to recover your system using System Restore from the Safe Mode Command Prompt.

To start system restore from the safe mode command prompt proceed as follows:

1. Boot your PC

2. During the boot sequence constantly tap the F8 key on your keyboard

3. If all goes well a type written menu will appear

4. From this menu select the Safe Mode with Command Prompt option

5. If asked to log on as Administrator, then do so. If you have not set an administrator password then simply press Enter

6. The Command Prompt should now appear

7. Now type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and then press Enter

8. The System Restore Wizard should now open and you can select a suitable restore point.

Thanks for help, Rodoan! I tried it, but the issue is that when it gets to the screen with the type written screen, the keyboard is dead so I am unable to select or type anything, so it just restarts Windows normally in 30 seconds, and goes back into the loop.

If you are using XP, then according to this thread, http://social.answers.microsoft.com/...c-e292b69f2fd1 the problem is KB977165 and the current workaround is to uninstall it via the recovery console.

1. Boot from your Windows XP CD or DVD and start the recovery console
(see this  link http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/307654   on how to use recovery console)

Once you are in the Repair Screen..

2. Type this command: CHDIR $NtUninstallKB977165$\spuninst

3. Type this command: BATCH spuninst.txt

4. Type this command: systemroot

5. When complete, type this command: exit

Your computer should restart and everything should be back to normal.

Thanks again gang. I attempted that method, but the problem still remains: I cannot get my keyboard to work, so therefore when it says TO BOOT FROM CD PRESS ANY KEY, it just defaults to attempting to start windows normally.
This is frustrating to say the least.

Then I'd suggest picking up a cheapy keyboard as a backup for your current one. Being unable to access boot menus and restore methods sounds awfully inconvenient.

If you've already tried an alternate keyboard, then I don't know what to say... that's an really strange problem and I'm out of suggestions.

it could be possible that his motherboard is on the way out. if you can't get your comp to recognize the keyboard, then take it to a shop and have them look at it. they will be able to do things you can't.

That's very strange.

I'm on Vista 32 bit and last Monday my PC did the exact same thing.

I had put the cause down to a virus or something of the sort as i had been doing some downloading from Limewire. But now i think about it i had also installed some updates for windows the same day.

Obviously it's not a wide spread problem but there definitely could be something wrong with the updates.

I fixed my problems my booting from disk but, with the same as you, my keyboard wouldn't respond after the initial POST. I got round that by plugging in an old PS/2 keyboard which responded fully.

When i did finally get my machine back on, every driver had either become corrupted or deleted because everything "installed" again. Same with programs. Had to reinstall everything again.


I hope you don't have to deal with that, but if you do, i think it would be safe to say the updates are borked.

Nevermind, I got it running again, lets see how it goes! Does anyone know if they've fixed the issue yet?
