    Heroes/Villans!!

Re: not able to get into being a Villain...

There are many CoH players, myself included, who have tried time and again to ding a Villain. Many of us simply find that while the Zones are awesome, the Archetypes are awesome, the Mission Arcs are awesome, etc... that there's something about playing a Vill that just doesn't sit well.

If you just can't find it in yourself to give a Vill your love, I'd say that's relatively normal, based on various threads I've seen here over the years.

Again, this doesn't indicate a dislike for anything in particular Red-side... in fact, there are facets of Red-side play that I wish were to be found Blue-side as well. But many are drawn to the "heroic" aspect of this particular MMO, and can't "get into" a Villain-ized persona.

    Welcome and good luck!

Why is it that an entire enemy group is reserved for only one archetype? Surely other heroes see the Void Seekers and Nictus as a threat to the city.
Thanks to Lightfoot for at least coming CLOSE to addressing the OP's concerns.

The OP was not an "entitlement" whine - it was addressing a very real concern...Khelds "attract" a specific, potentially very deadly (personally & for a team) type of enemy.

This makes sense for people who've "mastered" the game by getting a toon to 50. They are (or should be), by the time they've reached 50, more than ready to deal with Voids/Quants/Nictus.

At level 20, some characters may NEVER EVEN HAVE SEEN a Void/Quant/Nictus, depending on their teaming habits.

OP brings up a real concern. Please READ MOAR and discuss the OP's ACTUAL CONCERNS, not your perceived "entitlement whine".

It could just be a statistical anomaly, but I swear we're seeing a real uptick in newcomers at the moment.

    (2) Have another build really focused on survivability, with Tough/Weave etc. On a large team, with high difficulty foes, in end game content, the places people REALLY want a tank, they will be perfectly happy if you set a good pace, hold the attention of the most dangerous foes, and stay upright without ever defeating one single bad guy.
I was going to post something along the above lines as well...

You can build and slot your tank for varying degrees of survivability and (or should I say vs.) damage.

With multiple builds you can dance with whichever partner you're feeling attracted to at that instant.
  6. Also keep in mind that you can "build" any AT to lean slightly in one direction or another.

You can take a Tank and skip certain defensive powers, slot the heck out of your Damage powers, and have a Scrank.

Vice versa, take a Scrapper, go light on selecting/slotting Damage powers in favor of defensive stuff, and have a different kind of Scrank.

Some Controllers can solo well with emphasis on holds and damage (and mez protection if you can get it).
  7. Re: making some quick cash as a lowbie...

I'm gonna suggest something I wouldn't suggest in ANY other MMO, based on the kindness and "heroic" qualities of the players here.

Consider asking one of the dozens of level 50s you're going to come across, for some gifted Inf "to get you started".

A polite Tell along the lines of "Sorry to bother you, wondering if you can spare 5 or maybe 10k Inf to get me started?"

They're gonna look at your Vet badges, or lack thereof, and open a Trade screen. Chances are they'll be happy to gift you QUITE a bit more than 5k-10k.

I wouldn't do this in Wentworth's. You could give it a shot under the Atlas statue, but you're probably going to have the best luck in a more random encounter at a train station, Trainer (level-up NPC), SG base portal, etc.

I don't endorse panhandling on a larger level, but for a truely new player such as yourself, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many people (with multiple 50s and beaucoup Inf on their hands) will be more than willing to help you get the ball rolling.

The key is to ask for a small amount, and let the player feel magnanimous in giving you a LOT more than you ask for. Don't be a weenie and ask for 50k right off the bat, you won't have much luck, I guarantee.

If you ever see one of my high-level toons, I certainly will gift you. I'm @Cougarific on Freedom.

Oo! Oo! *raises hand jumping up n down*

    I have some theories.

a). Players tend to behave "heroically".
Before it was a superheroes n villains game, it was a superheroes game, and as such held an innate appeal to people with "heroic" aspects to their personalities. This involves being helpful, polite, and considerate, especially to new players.

b). A Positive Feedback cycle of helpfulness.
Based on a). we have veteran players generally behaving heroically toward newer players. Providing guidance and advice and answering questions, gifting Inf, drive-by buffing, Level 50s tagging along with sewer teams (sewer buffing?), Taxibot services (free or paid), etc.
When the newbies become vets, they behave similarly, remembering how much it meant to them as newbs, to have such assistance.
    Lather, rinse, and repeat.

c). Easy(ish) to learn, lifetime to master.
In relative terms, there's a lot to keep track of in-game. Different zones, best ways to get there, Contacts, Enhancements, Inspirations, buffs/debuffs, and the most effective use of Powers in general, etc. To someone not willing to invest a few brain cells, these "features" can be off-putting. This keeps out the riff-raff.

d). These Forums respond well to, and I would say expect, a certain level of intelligence/education/cleverness/civility.
From the player/posters to the Mods n Devs, the vast majority of people found here are smart n funny. If you're not either of those things, you're probably going to feel out of place here. Posters and Mods are not going to respond well to stupid comments or trolling, insults, or bad behavior in general. People will be quick to figure it out if they're not wanted here, and will move on to other forums where they feel more at home.

I've actually pondered on these issues quite a bit, having tried WoW and Pirates of the Burning Sea (after already being a CoH player), but finding the communities there so immature and inconsiderate, that I had no desire to play beyond the Free Trial period. And I'm an even bigger fan of the Age of Sail than I am superheroes!

But those games, then, suffer from the corollary NEGATIVE feedback cycle - rude vet players being rude to new players, who in turn...yadda.

I even had this experience with a SINGLE-PLAYER game...went on their Forums looking for help, found the denizens so mean and unhelpful, that I don't play the game anymore, even though I was enjoying it before visiting their Forums!

I love this game, the Mods, the Devs, the Forums, everything. You're all very special people, and I like it here.

Yes, surprising to see most are comfortable skipping even a mention of Khelds or Crabs.

A Peacebringer or Warshade is the ultimate solo char Blueside, as you can eventually just choose the best Form for the current situation and Tank, Scrap, or Blast away, even being a little of all 3 in any one fight.

Start in Lobster form, switch to human when things start clearing out (upping your damage while maintaining survivability), then go Squid when you feel safe doing so.

This thread is so all-over-the-place I'm not even gonna apologize for thread-jacking...

But punch-voking can be a problem for Tanks who benefit from being surrounded by as many enemies as possible.

If I want to help out that squishy under attack, it's much easier and SAFER (for me AND the team) to get his attention with a Taunt than jumping out of the middle of my mob to go punch-voke him.

Plus, I find other team members generally don't appreciate a Tank who's literally all over the map in a fight.

My Mace/Shield was once asked (as a lowbie) why he was bouncing around so much - clearly it was making it hard for the rest of the team to follow my lead - I had to explain that until I got my Taunt/Taunt Aura, I had to manually maintain aggro by running around punching the baddies.

For this reason, I do not consider the punch-voke an effective full-time tactic for an effective Tank.

    Steelclaw, we are not worthy!

Though Bubbawheat and Adeon are pretty darn close to worthy with their additions.

    Thx all!

    Not impressed

No offense intended Mad Briar, none at all, lemme just say that I really enjoy seeing new players come and dip their toes in the Forums here, asking for help, maybe a little defensive after experiencing the player base/forums of other MMOs, only to receive what you will eventually come to realize is an entirely ordinary basket-full of helpful, polite advice and assistance, from everyone here (including the Mods).

I'll again relate my experience with a different game, that I was really enjoying, until I went on their Forums seeking help, and found it was populated primarily by moronic, cranky, abusive, non-helpful players, and power-mad Mods.

I have yet to play that game again. And I was enjoying it! But the Forum population soured my view of the game so much, I didn't even want to look at the icon on my desktop, and dragged into a folder to hide it from view.

Stick with CoX, keep coming back to the Forums, you'll soon understand why this is my (and others') favorite game Period.

Sure, the game itself is great fun, but more importantly, I think, you'll find the players are really smart, really helpful (heroic even), and at times really REALLY funny.

Actually, the only way it might reduce any lag (I don't personally have a problem on Freedom, but I don't hang out in Atlas either).. is because many people would certainly quit the game. Problem solved? haha

What I know about programming wouldn't fill a thimble, but re: lag, I always just assume that someone on my team has a PC not quite as powerful as mine, so choppiness/lag results from the game having to slow things down a bit so we're all staying in synch.

I've been on full 8-man teams with no chop during intense action, and full teams with major chop during intense action. I see no correlation between current Server population/activity and current lag/chop. My assumption seems logical to me. Is it incorrect?

To me it's a little annoyance in certain rare circumstances that doesn't especially bother me. My wife, for various reasons, finds it frustrating to the point of quitting the team.

I respect the frustration factor you're experiencing, but for my money, seeing a Freakshow Tank get smacked by a forklift just

  21. Thanks to everyone who Replied - I'm already feeling better about dipping my toe in there, based on the friendly advice given here.

Impish Kat's suggestion: "Solo a few mishes. You don't have to go all the way through them, just enough to get a good feel for them. IIRC, there is a way to "favorite" the ones you like (someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that). That way, you'll have a list ready for your teams)" is most likely how I'll start out.

    Thanks again!

  23. My first half-dozen AE experiences (at the height of the "new shiny"/Farm-mania phase) were unmitigated disasters.

I've yet to set foot back in the AE buildings.

But I'm really, really curious and dying to experience some of the better offerings in there.

Problem is, (a) I don't really know where to start looking for the best stuff, and (b) I don't know how to effectively form a non-farm AE team.

I form & run regular mish teams every time I'm on, so don't really need help on that aspect.

But does anyone wanna provide some tips for forming a non-farm AE team, finding a fun arc, and having a great time playing thru it?

I'm worried that the somewhat-disasterous launch phase has soured so many players on the AE (as it did me), I won't be able to find willing participants, and if I did, wouldn't be able to lead them through a worthwhile arc.
