hmm...now that i think about it...that would require me to go villain to get soul mastery....goooooonna have to think about that one...
-
yeah...shadow meld is a good little power. i have it on my elec/elec stalker and its great for when i AS something in the middle of a spawn (assuming i actually DO AS something instead of just flat out LIGHTNING ROD it...it helps with incoming fire from stuff that didn't get hit with the Demoralize of whatever i hit died and Demoralize didn't trigger. Hadn't thought about it with my scrapper...but i might go there. That or whichever set has Physical Perfection (body mastery?)

Quote:Actually...as for the damage type...I'd lean more towards lethal more than smashing. Smashing damage is more akin to blunt force trauma and you really don't get that much with a whip. You tend to end up with more lacerations, slices, and cuts for whip-related injuries. The groundwork has already been layed with demon summoning, no matter how challenging it was. Rounding out a full 9 tiers might be challenging, but it should be easier now that they've done it once.
As for the damage type, clearly smashing as a base. Then I'd like to see mutually exclusive power picks that allow you to convert half of the damage to an elemental type. At first I thought a bundle of toggles you can choose from a-la dual-pistols would be good, but completely duplicating it would take something away from DP. So just force the player to choose one type (or none) and stick with it. They could get 1 or 2 other types via alternate builds, and of course respec.
Aside from that...i'm with some of the other folkz. I'd personally love to see a whip set released...even if it uses the same mechanic as the DS set attacks (i.e. the whip manifests as you swing)...but i'm not gonna hold my breath on it. They nearly gave themselfs explodey-head syndrome with just the three attacks. -
Yeah...Hasten is already in my build. Its only running the base slot right now...but that's subject to change.

I'm currently leveling a kinelec scrapper (27 right now) and started wondering what it would take to beef him up to give him at least a decent amount of defense to round him out a bit more. I'm looking at either melee def and/or S/L defense. Any suggestions?
Few points of note, i do plan on taking all of my attacks (yeah...i'm a bit of an attack ho)...especially since it's much easier to do now that we have inherent fitness and MIGHT hit up SS for a travel power...maybe. Been using NR for travel and may still do so as LR will give me another boost to speed. If anything...i may pick up a travel and use it as a set mule.
Suggestions?
Edit: by "decent amount of defense" i mean probably something in the range of 20-25%...give or take. I'm not wholly worried about soft-capping this toon as much as having a little added backup to my resistances. -
Electric/Electric Scrapper/Stalker/Brute/Tanker? (not sure about if tankers can get this pairing off top of my head).
SS/Invuln Tank/Brute Classic combo
Claws/Regen Scrapper/Stalker
Broadsword/Shield (thematically a classic)
Ninja/TA MM (again works in theme)
Claws/Nin or NS/Nin, MA/Nin, and maybe, KM/nin and Spines/Nin stalkers (damn ninjas are EVERYWHERE!)
Necro/Dark MM
Bots/Devices MM (again for theme)
I could probably go on a bit more...but i gotta get some sleep. -
to echo a few statements....nnnnnnoooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
....But seriously, you will be sorely missed Castle. Thank you for all the hard work you've helped put into CoX to make this a great game to play and enjoy. And for putting up with us, you're oh-so fickled players and fans of the game. I'm sure both of these weren't always easy tasks...tho which one was the more difficult one could be debatable. Wish you the best of luck in whatever undertaking you set yourself to from here on out.
And do whomever takes on Castle's role after his departure...you've got some big shoes to fill. Really...he's CASTLE...and castles are HUGE! ...Unless it's a Lego castle....then...not so big...but our Castle ain't made outta Legos. At least I don't think he is...is he? Hmmmm....
ANYHOO...yeah...uh...best of luck when you enter the meatgrinder that is.....US! MUAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAAA!!!! hehe -
Quote:This was the same situation in Final Fantasy XI. White Mages (the primary healers of the game) would gain aggro by healing party members. Their 2-hour ability (a special ability of whatever job/class you were that was on a 2 hour timer) of Benediction was practically a death sentence as it healed all party members for full HP...which REALLY pissed off mobs! It was next to impossible to pull aggro off the poor little white mage after that.I used to play Anarchy Online before coming to CoH. In that game, the "Doctors" (the game's main healing class) pulled huge amounts of aggro just by healing; the bigger the heal, the more "threat" they generated. This forced the tank class to stay on top of his game spamming taunts and paying more attention while managing aggro. All mezzes in that game were single target, too.

i'm not sure about the first one involving RoF...but pretty sure the "25' range of team teleport" is stating that teammates must be within 25 feet of the caster for them to be teleported.
-
Power Customization...you can change MOST of the attacks in MA from kicks to punches.
And i hadn't thought about a /nin stalker. totally forgot about that set...which can fit into the batman setup rather nicely...except for MAYBE the heal...but even that could be worked around. And concidering that batman mastered numerous martial arts from around the world...one of which if i recall WAS ninjitsu...makes for an almost perfect setup. -
Quote:Fixed that for ya.Fire/Traps Cor (be sure to alternate colors for the blasts)
Fire/Rad Cor (alter all the colors you like from primary and secondary)
Fire/Storm Cor (again color as you like)
"something flashy"/Fire Dom
Fire/Mind Manip Blaster
Fire/Devices Blaster
There's a theme here somewhere... (grins)
Good luck. -
Best i can think of...Scrapper...MA/SR/Weapon or Stalker of the same variety...MA/SR/Weapon.
Or come to think of it...MA/Willpower/Weapons could probably work too.
The Stalker version would give you that whole "strike from outta nowhere" feel that batman is oh-so famous for.
the Weapons Mastery APP would give you at least a small portion of the gadget aspect of them like i.e. the Shuriken power acting as stand-in for Batarangs. -
Quote:it's not that they work well (which as said...when used right can be VERY good) as it's more of the fact that many practically claim them as the end-all, be-all of powersets/combos.How are all these sets over hyped when a lot of them just work extremely well ?
"i wanna make a troller...suggestions?" "MUST BE FIRE/KIN! THEY R THE BEST!"
"I'm looking to make a new melee toon." "ELEC/SHIELD OR SS/SHIELD! UBER!"
...so on and so forth. Some people will take these suggestions (and others as i only used a few) and make said toons and find them to be much more lackluster than advertised unless they're built to certain specs. Hence...overhyped. -
they won't as they are not, as previously mentioned, a global BONUS and more akin to a global SO, or perhaps HO'ish in the case of alphas that affect multiple stats. The combat attributes window shows bonuses and penalties applied to your powers via buffs and debuffs respectively, be they from your own powers, teammates powers, or critters. The alpha slot doesn't apply any sort of bonus to you but works more as an "inviso-slot" to all of your powers...or at least all of your powers that normally accept the particular type(s) of enhancement.

An offshoot to C&E's Katana/Regen is a Dual Blades/Regen scrapper. I've been leveling one for a bit (he's just shy of dinging lvl 31) and has been a total blast to play. Flashy sword play combined with a pretty active, or should i say, reactive secondary in /regen leads to a pretty busy toon to play. It's a little heavier on the end dept than the katana as i've got a 3 slotted QR and single slotted stamina and having to pop blues on really extended fights or running from one combat to another nonstop (aka YAY SCRAPPERLOCK!)...but it's nothing really horrible. See also Claws/Regen.
I also second on the Dominator, even though you seem to be focusing on blue side. One of my favorite toons was a Plant/Thorns Dom. He could effectively nuetralize mobs and take'em out. My Earth/Stone Dom is also loads of fun. Lotsa shake, rattle, roll, and SMASH! That and seeing a Dominator rip a bigazz rock from the ground and chuck it at some poor slob is worth the price of admission alone...to say nothing of the big rock hammers.
Also...triform WS/PB. If you can manage your slots (and believe me...no small feat there) well, a triform kheldian is hell on wheels. You can end up with a toon that can function well in most any situation. From pumping damage into stuff to soaking up damage as a secondary/backup tank...in the same fight. Always something to do with these guys. -
the tech reason for no shield with katana, dual blades, spines, and claws was the sets took up the models "slot" (can't think of the appropriate term) for a weapon in that hand. The toon models can only have a certain amount of added things to them from powersets. The shield takes up the "slot" that would be used by the above mentioned powersets.

I am not a Blapper. I...am a vessel of destruction. With my ability of teleportation, I raise my damage, appear within the midsts of my enemies, unleash a Hail of Bullets and Rain Bullets down upon their unsuspecting heads. Any hapless victim of my initial onslaught that survives finds himself on the recieving end of my powerful electric smackdown!
...
...
...
That's just how I roll.
As one or 2 of the previous posters said, my first blaster was pretty much total range as an Elec/Dev (before ED when i could six slot TD and then my attacks for all 6-slot damage) because i thought "blaster...range...better off over there". That and the little splash screen while loading the game said pretty much the same thing. Then i started teaming with an Elec/Elec blaster on a semi-regular basis and thought "wow! effing awesome!" Still...i completed my trek to 50 with what i had...and enjoyed it. Then i rolled up another blaster and started using melee attacks from secondary (/energy i think). HUGE difference!
Although i'll admit...one of my blasters right now is an AR/Nrg blaster who doesn't have any of the melee attacks past Power Thrust...but that's more of a choice of trying for a pure ranged shooter (not because of redraw as i have a lvl 50 DP/Elec blaster that moved in and out of melee). I may at some point make a second build with him and add the melee attacks. -
Hmm...not really a bad thought...tho some minor issues with it...
1. Stone Cages: I'm sure you meant Stone Cage as Cages is the AoE version. Good, standard tier one.
2. Stone Fist: Yup..could go with this.
3. Stone Mallet: Might be a wee bit early for the second melee attack...but good choice.
4. Quicksand: Eeeehhhh...unless it was made a LOT smaller than the troller version of this power a la Ice Patch, i'd have to say no. And even then, for what QSand does, a micro version would almost not be worth it. Maybe a ST Version of Stalagmite.
5. Build Up: No complaints here.
6. Heavy Mallet: HM Is a good, solid attack with great damage dealing potential, but with having tremor at level 32 might skew the "normal" melee range attack ratio as compared to most of the other sets. I'd suggest either replacing it with Tremor at this level or swapping them.
7. Fault/Fissure: Fault and Fissure are similar, yet different powers. Fault does no damage, only KD and Stun. Fissure does this AND damage. Just a little FYI. Now, the problem i see with this one is the AoE control aspect, both hard and soft (stun and KD respectively) which is pretty much a no-go for blaster secondaries. I'd suggest swapping this out for Power Boost.
8. Mud Pots: No particular issues with this one...
9. Tremor: I've got 2 problems with this one. One, is that unless they gave this a signifigant boost, this would be a crap-tastic tier 9 power. It's a pbaoe that does roughly the same damage as stone fist to whatever it hits. To wade thru 32 levels only to have THAT greet me would honestly disappoint me to no end. See my remark for Heavy Mallet. Either swap these two powers...or move this to HM's slot and replace Tremor with Seismic Smash (although i'd reduce the hold mag). Personally i'd do the latter. -
Bad, stalker! BAD! You will stay! You will FIGHT! You will destroy all in your path or die with HONOR! Hitty and Runny stalker...BAD! HAHA
Single target goodness would probably come from Claws, Katana (Oops, my bad...Ninja Blade), Martial Arts, and maybe Energy Melee. Oh...and the new Kinetic Melee.
Claws is if course, the DPS set, as it's pretty easy to get a steady attack chain going as many powers have fairly low recharge and end costs. Quick and dirty at it's finest.
Ninja Blade is also a good solid choice (though i personally have little experience with it...may try it again someday)...and is graced with one of the coolest AS animations in the game.
Martial Arts is, and always has been, a single target specialist. Plus with the recent buff to Cobra Strike (which i THINK stalkers get?) that gives it comparable damage to Crane Kick...it got even better in that field.
The problem with these three is they're all lethal/smashing damage, which is typically the most resisted damage type in the game. But i wouldn't let a little thing like that stop me, personally.
Energy Melee is also one of the ST specialist, but unlike MA...it has a mix of energy and smashing damage...which helps when faced with mobs resistant to one type or another.
Kinetic Melee is like EM in that it's a mixture of energy and smashing damage, with good ST damage, a cool AS (kamehameha/hadouken style) a ranged attack, and the critical for Concentrated Strike (the lvl 32 T9 attack) instantly recharges Build Up, although CS will not auto-crit while hidden.
Electric Melee is probably the way to go for AoE carnage. A stalker with Lightning Rod and Thunderstrike is just...omg WRONG! But in a beautiful "boom of death" kinda way wrong. I have an Elec/Elec stalker in the lvl 44 range...and he has all but stopped using his AS ever since i got his Lightning Rod slotted. LR doesn't break hide when it hits, which means that you've got a pretty good chance to follow up with Thunderstrike and crit most of the stuff around you. Sadly...LR CANNOT CRIT...which made me a sad stalker for a little while. -
Yup...Energize did indeed replace Conserve Power...and for the better, I might add. Not only is it a darn good heal on a fairly quick recharge (one minute IIRC), but a +regen and endurance discount for something like 30 seconds. Sure, it's not quite as long lasting or powerful as the end discount you got from CP...but when you have powersink in your arsenal...you really shouldn't have to worry about that little blue bar.
As they say..."Take it, slot it, love it!" -
Quote:No worries, Doc. I never really used Mids all that much and never really for any serious kind of build planning, nor have i gotten really heavy into IO's and tend to stick to SO builds, so even with almost 6 years behind my belt, there's still a few things i'm kinda new at.Hey, didn't mean to take a dig at you. I just saw the combination of common mistakes and really (really) expensive IO sets and thought, HMMM, that's suspicious.
When slotting powers in Mids, make sure that in addition to the set bonuses, you're looking at the actual enhancement values of the power. I.e. Accuracy, damage, end reduction and recharge.
As some others pointed out, low level sets won't give great values at level 50, even if they have sweet set bonuses. -
@ Doc X: Nope...am indeed lookin for advice. I've never really messed with the fight pool as i usually tend to lean towards squishies, with a few melee's here and there for variety's sake.
Kinda funny you say that deflection was light on the defense as i had the whole kismet set slotted in it...but hey...as Ace Ventura said, "Aaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllrighty then!" LOL
Nah...not trollin' at all.
Edit: Well...looked at what you were talkin about there, doc...swapped out a couple of those kismet IO's for standard 50 def IO and my defense shot up a few points. So...between that and the little sample build Syn did up...beginning to rethink my building already. (Actually did a few test tweaks and managed to get melee def up to 60%+ and AoE and Ranged closer to softcap 45%...yeah...much to learn, i have.
@ Syn: Hmm...yeah...I think i could work around that sample a bit and do some minor tweaking with it (like leave out SJ...NR works quite well for me) which i could sub for an added attack or somethin (hey...what can i say...i like being on the offensive). Thx!
Even though i've mostly solo'd him thus far...he has done pretty well as he is in a team setting...even against oranges, reds, and purples. But, still room for improvement, and i'm still in a learning process.
Appreciate the replies, folkz.
