Quote:Really? I walked up and point-blank shot him in the face with Fire Blasts until he died. Fire/Cold is good but its not that good.Trapdoor is a very simplistic version of this. You can have all the IOs in the world, but if you just stand there and try to beat him down, only the top DPS builds in the game might have a chance. Upping the difficulty doesn't change the need to use some strategy in that fight. I greatly hope the devs realize that they have to hold the line here on the endgame content or don't bother.

Quote:I miss 90% res caps on my ScrappersReally, I'm just watching this thread for Arcanaville to ride in on her celestial chariot of light, and apply a precision guided orbital kinetic kill vehicle of logic detailing precisely how the OP is wrong.
For what it's worth, OP, I wrote a guide back in Issue 3 or 4, detailing precisely why pursuing the resist caps was worthwhile for a tanker. And precise amounts of incoming DPS had no relevance to that discussion.

Quote:Brilliant post. There's been a lot of constructive posts here. Try to remain constructive, I'm not going to respond to baiting posts like these last two.
I went and got the Thunderstrike set from the Merit Vendor in the Atlas Wentworth's, but don't have enough merits to get two sets, let alone three.
I had most of the necessary salvage already, and the stuff I needed to buy wasn't terribly expensive. Crafting them myself thus cost a total of about 6 million for the entire set. That stings, but I noticed a difference, even with only one set of them. I can imagine three sets will be very nice indeed.
Just a little update.
I wish PWNZ (the original) was still around. -

The majority of the individuals that will reply to this thread view the following statements as functionally identical:
"40-45% is worth more than 0-5%." (Post 20)
"The origins arise from the fact that increasing defence gives exponential rises to survivability. This is not a point of contention." (OP)
I foresee that this thread will sadly not end well -
This thread is scorching red hot.
I didn't realize that FU ---> Focus ---> Eviscerate was that good a chain ... must go off and see if Brute chain is similar in efficiency -
heh heh
nice spreadsheet (seriously). useful for answering the +16.7% vs. HP/Sec argument.
I'm not sure its of as much practical value for the folks that are likely to respond to this thread, simply because incoming DPS for those individuals is typically very, very, very high -
Guys, I sincerely apologize for the late notice, but I can't make today - the wife invited in-laws over at 4PM ET, and that's very likely to conflict with start time. Can't, uh, say no to Mrs. Avenger for the next 7-8 months ...

Quote:Given what you stated, you'd get a significant increase in defensive performance from taking the fighting pool, slotting Tough with the +3% def IO and slotting Weave for defense. That would soft-cap you to all positions, and enable you to reduce your reliance on Red Fortunes (i.e., reduced slots in defensive powers). The +3% IO can be done relatively easily either by lowballing bids or rolling bronze tickets in the 10-14 level range. I suspect you'll like the results. Good luck.I'm pretty much below 100m influence.
My current plans are to get the LotG +Recharge IOs through either reward merits or alignment merits, since I don't have the money needed to buy the recipes/salvage. On the subject of the +Rech IO; why not slot it in the SR passives? It seems much easier and hassle free. My original plans were 3 +rech IOs in the passives, and one in combat jumping, which would give me about 30% global recharge. total cost would be 8 alignment merits, or 16 days of tip farming. Maybe less if I throw in some TFs and pick merit rewards instead of incarnate salvage.
In this build I don't have the medicine pool, nor do I have tough/weave. I do however have maneuvers 4 slotted with 1end 3def (Could probably change that to sets later) and tactics 6 slotted with the gaussian's set, which costed a pretty penny thanks to inflated salvage prices.
I'm sitting at 42% ranged defense, and 37.7% melee/AoE defense. If I get a set of Touch of Death for my melee attacks that should bring me up to 40% melee defense. Aside from that, however, it seems like that's my limit unless I respec into a more "optimal" build designed for soft capping defense.
@Kratics: Since endurance isn't a problem for you, you're soft capped and are basically invulnerable to everything, grab Musculature for extra damage since you don't need the endurance from cardiac or the defense buff from nerve. -
What's your budget, Pinny?
In general, I'd recommend:
- Slot your defensive powers 3-4 - enough that you max out on defense.
- Take Fighting Pool, slot Tough with +3% IO, and 3-4 slot Weave for defense.
- Take Combat Jumping and slot 3-4 for defense.
- Take a +to hit buff power like Tactics or Focused Accuracy and fully slot 6 with Gaussian's.
That will cap your defense to all positions. If you don't want to spend the cash on Gaussian's you could always take Maneuvers instead.
Shred Monkey's comments on how to slot with LOTG are excellent, I recommend them.
I don't have Hasten on my Claws Brute, but I also have 95% Global recharge, so I didn't take it. It can be helpful for getting Spin and Follow Up back more quickly.
You should be out there solo'ing AVs in no time. -
If you want my Fire/Cold corr, I can bring it. I don't particularly care about the MoLRSF badge one way or the other, but I don't mind helping badgers.

Quote:<sniff>Watching a single ho'd fire tank pull an entire map set for 8 of purples, then call down armageddon on 70 werewolves crammed into a rock was a religious experience.
Brings a tear to the eye.
I remember the HO nerf, even though it didn't affect me personally (I had, like, one). If folks remember Havok, he cried like a baby. He was also peeved by the original (in Beta) nerf to Tank res caps from 100% to 90%, and didn't take ED or the GDN very well either, heh -
Quote:Fully HO'd Fire Tanks were just plain beastly. Rare, but beastly, much like Tom Selleck's 'stache. And not to pick favorites in the ACTUAL debate, let me also say that true or not, Acemace's opinion on the relative performance of Hamio'd pre-ED FireTankers sounds quite reasonable to me.
I can't remember all the rules as they were, but I'm assuming you could slot six Enzymes for +300% defense. Yes, Fire has no defense, but you can grab the power pools. So let's say you take Weave, Combat Jumping and Manuevers. That's 9.8% unslotted. +300% gives you 39.2% defense from just three pools. There probably aren't many Fire tanks sitting at 39.2% defense these days?
On the resistance side, was that also getting 50%, or was it 30%? I'm thinking it was 30%? So +180%. So capped smashing, lethal and fire, 84% resistance to energy and negative, and 56% resistance to cold. Again, I suspect these numbers are higher than we get these days? I'm not a tanker expert, so I don't know for sure.
How about Healing Flames? Hmmm, looks like the best is four Golgis for +200% healing and two L53 recharge IOs plus perma Hasten. So 70% + 2*38.3% = +146.6% recharge, so recharges in 40 / 246.6% = 16 seconds, and heals for 1406 hit points, so 88 HP/S of healing. Plus whatever non-ED capped passive regeneration comes to.
Now, I don't know what the state of the art for Fire Tank survivability is. But I suspect those numbers would be hard for a modern Fire tank to compete with, assuming I got them right.
The only thing I would add from a history point of view - the fighting pool had much higher numbers back in the day. Weave was 12.5% for Tanks and Defenders IIRC. That prompted TheConfessor to LOL@ /SR Scrappers - "You get more defense from power pools, lol @ you!"
Invulnerability was just ridiculous. Capped def to everything but Psi and with 50% HOs, nearly capped res to all but psi. -
My first toon to 50, over 400 hours leveling, ended up with around 29million influence at 50. Just from selling dropped SOs to vendors. I ended up giving most of that away to alts or friends.

Quote:make sure you six-slot your purples. don't stop at five slots - the toxic res is for true pimps.True story. My first 50 was a dark melee/Inv scrapper. He ran on SOs for 4 years (2 years before the IOs/markets and 2 years after). I only upgraded him to common IOs and a couple cheap set IOs. He doesn't die unless I stop paying attention to what I am doing.
I guess I should be crying that he is unplayable since I haven't put billions into his build.
man I wish the OP hadn't deleted his original post in the brute forum publicizing his 'leet build with purples -
Quote:You are such a pimp, man. Awesome.I got 5 sets totaling 26 PVP-IOs right now
2x5 Gladiator's Strike (Strike and Sir Sup)
2x5 Panacea (Recon and Dull Pain) (I may get one of the +HP/+end one eventually)
1 full set Fury of the Gladiator (spin)
Slash, Focus, Eviscerate and Shockwave have 5 purples + a damage proc
I also have Epic Hold set slotted with 5 purples.
51 total purples and PVP IO's which is about the upper limit of what can be usefully slotted from them (IMHO of course) -
Quote:I'm open to giving this another try with the old Fire/Cold. Friday night again?Ahhhh. Yeah, the least run was less than stellar. We had a darned fine team, but had some communication trouble and really let the time crunch get to us. (The frustrating game bugs didn't help there.)
Next time, we need to make sure everyone's on the same page at the onset of each mission. It was obvious that there were some pretty different strategies people were used to, so the assumptions of what actions to take were different across the board.
It's a tough line as there's a lot of patience needed, (especially on the last mish) but I realize the time people have is limited. Communication is key, a shared plan means less time wasted, fewer confused players. Bah, again, sorry that we didn't pull through. -
I am curious how the Emp drew Black Scorpion's aggro. My combat logs indicated that was who killed him.

For some reason I thought your live build was soft capped, but upon further perusal, I see its not. Benumb for the win
-
assume so
things could certainly have changed since I last had a Mu pet in I12, but according to city of data, they do not currently heal
http://tomax.cohtitan.com/data/power...owers_Mu_Adept -
Mu Adept doesn't heal
Mu Guardian, the Dominator pet, does -
I should have added "still" pylon-capable
I thought your live build was at 45% s/l, and was speculating if the drop to 43ish % would make a difference
