What, do you think that bandwidth is "free"? It's not. They are already paying their fair share, same as the people who are requesting the data. They may not be paying one specific ISP that's ******** about Google and the like "using their pipes for free", but the fact is that they are paying. Same as you or I that aren't paying every ISP, but rather the one specific gatekeeper.
See here is where i am not sure about how everything works.

My thought or understanding would be that say hulu, they pay a server farm for their servers. They pay that farm for the data they pass through. And then you would think that server farm then pays their ISP inturn for the total amount of data they pass through to that isp.

However that ISP then puts hulus content on the larger network, which inturn passes it onto your local ISP who delivers it to you. That isp, your isp, isnt getting money from hulu if they are not the isp that houses thier servers. But thier network has to be able to sustain the bandwidth to get that content to you. Which is really the same amount of bandwidth that the original ISP has to handle when you think about it.

Now i dont know the real particulars, like i said, i would just only logically think this is how it works. So you local ISP is really only sure to get money from their customers. So since they were shot down to charge the amazons, hulus, etc to charge large providers for that delievery, their two choices are to suck up the cost, or charge the customer. In this case it looks like they chose to charge the customer.

So yes google et al are paying someone to provide the server, but not really all the parties needed to deliver that product.

Again i could be wrong in my understanding.
  2. Daredevil is a hard movie to do IMO. He is kinda batman like in that he has no powers to speak of, atleast no super strenght etc. His powers mainly center around abilities that compensate for his loss of sight.

So the one thing i did like about that movie was that i think at the time they sought to seperate out the style of action. The batman movies have always been kinda lackluster in the hand to hand combat IMO. By the time you put someone under all that rubber in that batsuit there is only so much moviement you can attribute to him so you get more of the grappling hook, batpod kinda action.

Daredevil tried to keep it more in line with a bar room fight, which i liked. Afleck didnt IMO do a horrible job as the character. And for the time it was being made the effects were pretty decent. And while the story could have been better, i really for the most part enjoyed the film for what it was. Which IMO was a midlevel midbudget pre-summer movie season filler.

That being said i think that it could have been done better. Which hopefully this will be.

On a totally seperate note, Kevin Smith. Just wondering why with all the feedback and fanboi attention that is given to this director/writer, why has no studio signed him on to do one of this midlevel comic movies. It just seems like even if the movie stunk that Smith's ties to the community alone would assure a good opening that would probably atleast earn back your investment. And I for one would be intrested to see how he would treat a subject he himself was a fan of.

And I repeat, BULLCRAP. Again, neither we, nor Google/etc should be held for ransom just because AT&T under-spec'ed and over-promised.

The very fact that they were selling different tiers of service should tip you off that this is nothing more than a bald cash grab.

Essentially this is just a nudge back in the direction of pay-per-bit.
Honestly part of me thinks that the Googles and such sould to a certian extent be responsible in some part of expanding or upgrading networks. After all if i drive a truck for a living to deliever products to stores i pay taxes in my fuel usage to support the upkeep and building or roads. If i am walmart or target, when i get my building license i am responsible for envirmental impact and building access streets, electric lines etc to my new store location. However internet companies like google, hulu, amazon, itunes, have simply built a system where all they are responsible for is their own support. Paying for the servers needed for their business and are completely reliant on the ISPs to deliver it for them but accept little to none of the cost for that delivery, but all of the profit.

Your right its basicly the cable/phone companies attempts to make a system that will have some customers at higher prices. And as people get more and more into relying on the online services and ask for more cap space but complain about the cost, then a new unlimited plan will come about. Just like cell phones, we paid for minutes, texing, data etc etc, finally now almost every carrier has a unlimited plan and its at a higher rate then really anyone needs. Because mostly people are dumb, and they dont realize that they dont need unlimited phone minutes when almost all their connections are through text messages now. But they want the shinney smart htc or iphone and the companies say if you want that its only with these plans.

This is really just the the same business plan that has worked so well for the oil companies for so many years. Every year before summer gas goes up like 50 cents a gallon or more. But at the end of the summer it never goes back down as low as it was. They maybe drop it down 40 cent. So progressively the price goes up, but it spikes, meets complaints, and gives some relief against the spike so the public breaths a sigh of relief and doesnt realize the price is still higher then it was.

Ummmm i would argue that yes it is our fault. Yours and mine, collectively we ******* and moaned about the net netruality issues, made our voices known that we didnt care for the idea of throttling back content providers etc. Well those attempts failed, now this is the result. Instead of profiting off google etc, the cable companies are going to profit off of us. So the customer maintains their freedom of choice that we wanted, yet for a higher price.

We all know how this is going to go though. Major providers will see this as some type of boom for them, start lowering caps to get over use charges. A small provider or reseller will break that mold and advertise unlimited use again, be successful and the big boys will squash them by going back to offering high or unlimited caps.

Also keep in mind we're talking about KiloBYTES here. Connection speeds are expressed in KiloBITS.

    605KB/sec * 8 = 4840Kb/sec (In other words, just under 5 megabits/sec.)

Now I likes me some internet, but nobody (and I mean NOBODY) is on 24x30 (24 hours a day, 30 days a month).

Even were you on 10-12 hours a day, a good chunk of that time is spent NOT using bandwidth. Unless you're torrenting, you have little to fear from this cap.

But make no mistake. This is, essentially, an end-run around the net neutrality issue and a large provider's attempt to squeeze more cash out of their network. They tried rattling the "we'll bill content providers for stuff we request" saber and not only got laughed at, they got humiliation conga'ed too. Now they're going after the other side, their own subscribers.

Notice how their own video on demand services don't count towards the quota. And, were Netflix, Hulu, etc paying them, likely they wouldn't either. Think "protection racket".
Its not just that, but ATT with their uverse has for sometime now been taking hits on quality based on the idea that running HD tv connections and highspeed internet and phone service all off the old network of analog lines not made for it was causing performance issues. Im sure that by making their customers feel that they might need to throttle down their usage they are hoping to eliminate some over use that they feel is dragging down their network.

Also keep in mind, kinda like comcast got smacked down for on the whole capping or blocking file sharing, this is yet another way to address this issue. Yet now rather then capping a specific function that comcast got smacked in court for, they are simply imposing caps on all usage to end run around that.
  6. Not familar with the Red Nose Day thing. Are these "Specials" kinda like the children in need 10 minute deals or are they like a Christmas special full lenght episode?

That was my point. If they had simply started letting them run into aliens and get kidnapped etc a bit earlier, and just let us assume that they brought enough food, water, the air scrubbers were ok since no breathing was on board, it would have worked out alot better. And those episode could have been filler for when the show was up and had an established audience already.

    New SGU 3/7

The thing is this was a good episode and goes to show you that this show had promise if they had got it up and running at this level to begin with instead of that whimp fest of a first half of the season it launched with that was all episodes dealing with finding water or food etc.

    iPad 2

What i find most ammusing is that Apple does in fact usually come up with nice products and ideas. However it seems like in order to run exclusive market places and such like the ap store they leave off things people really wanted like Flash support etc.

But what really seems to happen is that after the first model hits and is successful, all the other companies copy them and make better related products then apples. For instance most other smart phones have better features then Iphone, alot of the new android tablets are IMO better then the Ipads. So it always kinda strikes me as funny that people get so hyped for apples 2nd round of products when usually by that time Apples second round is only maybe catching up to other companies first rounds.

Did they actually postpone the wedding? I know clark says something like its ok to that he would want to marry her in 5 days or 5 years, but i dont recall them actually saying the wedding wasnt going to happen by the end of this season. (or that they really postponed it more then just putting lois' jitters to rest)

Seriously, no one's seeing a repetitive problem for this show in its final season?

Last week, Clark decided to put on glasses (and somehow, despite years of people knowing what his face looks like without them, this works instantly) and wants to keep his identity a secret. While I know an off-camera Zatanna is to blame, I think it's poorly timed that Clark is doing the same things that made him stand out before. Even after the "potion" has worn off. Like speeding off in the middle of the street and running into a wall. And where are his f'n glasses?!?
    Ya we did notice.

Ok seriously if anyone ever questioned that smallville seems to get the most untalented, unorginal writers, all you need to look at is the recent episodes since the break.

First episode back should have basicly been titled "The Matrix" this episode was "Date Night" and by the previews next episode is "The Hangover". . .
  12. Saddest thing on that list for me is No Ordinary Family. It started off kinda slow, but frankly has for me picked up some steam in the last month or so. But it is up against Glee which could be part of the problem right there. It would be nice to have ABC find a nicer spot for it and give it a second season to see what happens.
  13. My main issue is that if they did this type of episode 2 years ago i would have probably just said "oh well its filler" however right now at this point of maybe having 10 or so episodes left to the entire series, doing filler episodes IMO is poor planning and creative decision.

They have basicly barely touched the storyline of darksied at all yet. Even the terrible doomsday treatment was getting more build up then this seasons baddie. Its almost like the end of the series is going to be based more on the wedding then any villian. Im personally getting tired of the whole wedding plot, its to early, even in a alternate universe for them to be hitching up anyway. And frankly im just getting tired of the drops in the season that are only intended to get fanbois erect. The "hints" of clark in costume, the refferences to batman and wonderwoman etc. But even if y ou left in those drops, this season should already be ramped up to a fevor pitch where we are cursing our TVs when the episode ends and rushing home from work to catch the next episode the next week. As it stands now i would not even remember its on if my DVR wasnt set to automaticly record it for me.

And by all accounts all this dramtic rip off is just building to what? A confrontation between clark and a absolutely terrible looking dark seid?
  15. I dont think its just scifi. Honestly i look at the state of TV and with the cancelation of 24 last year, and just barely hanging on to Glee simply because i like their variations on popular music, almost ever show i watch now is on cable. Cable networks seem to be the only place that isnt content on simply running reality shows or dancing/singing contests to pay the bills.

I pretty much only look forward now to new Burn Notices, Royal Pains, Pysch, etc. I am finding Face Off to be kinda fun to watch as a reality/contest show but atleast they found a fun new medium rather then performance to deal with. And im trying out Being Human on Syfy, but it seems kinda emo and whinny for my tastes, im not sure if the original on BBC was like that also. Unfortunately right now everything i would like is either on break or getting ready to go on break, so im expecting a big blank reason to pay for cable until Doctor Who starts up again in April.

The real problem with scifi is finding a way to do it right. To put characters you like, respect, hate, loath etc all into a intresting enviroment and then create the drama. BSG did this really well, so did FireFly. STTNG also i think had a good run though it ended some time back. Problem is that things like SGU just spent 1.5 seasons and only created one character that universally people seemed to give a damn about. That i think more then the earthly alien worlds and stock recycled footage from past series was more of a downer for that show then simply no one caring about scifi.

For star wars, its far from dead. Clone Wars is a great show IMO. And one of the best rated shows on CN right now. And with the 3d work being done to re-re-release the movies next year, we should see a big resurgence with all those newer fans going to the movies. Last time the originals were in theaters was 97 so fans like my 11 year old son were not even born yet to see them on the big screen.

Star Trek, well give it some time. I cant imagine Paramount not going forward with a new movie based universe when you look at the profits from the 2009 film.

I really think the problem sometime is simply the budgets, everyone wants a TV show to look like a movie. I think shows like Doctor Who and even to some extent the STTNG have shown that its ok to sacrifice a bit on your effects budget when you put forward stories people want to see. SGU could have learned alot from that and made smaller story arcs that drew in viewers more quickly with more intrest then taking the space opera multi season view to their story lines.

My problem mostly lies in the fact they're just creating drama to make Superboy angry and cause more internal drama for the team.

Superman is being a jerk to Superboy.. he gets angry
The Justice League makes Superboy attend combat training when he has super strength... he gets angry.
Black Canary proves that super strength doesn't help Superboy against a better skilled opponent... he gets angry.
Miss Martian tries to be nice to Superboy... he gets angry.
Superboy spots a ton of robo-monkies on a truck... he gets angry.
The villain-of-the-week makes an off-hand comment that Superman is Superboy's "dad"... he gets angry.
Amazo is about to win the fight.... wait for it.... Superboy gets angry.

The only justifiable anger-issue for Superboy is him & Superman, but even that seems silly because Superman is not the type to suddenly act butt-hurt that there is a clone-him running around.

I think with the direction they have taken Superboy, if he wasn't on the team I would like the show more because without him the show still has its serious tone but they actually seem more like a superteam. With this "I need to justify everything I do by being [censored] off" Superboy all it does it make the team seem highly disfunctional on a weekly basis.

I'm also calling it that Artemis is gonna fill the 'bad girl' role and her and Superboy are gonna instantly bond and make Miss Martian all jealous and she ends up 'running away' from the team.

BUT to end it on a positive note: I do enjoy the running joke with 'Whelmed'. Way to go Robin Grayson!
Well though i can see your point i think really they are trying to give some depth to what traditionally is a shallow character.

If you really think about superman he is pretty basic. Farm boy, good morals, invulnerable and flies and is the ultimate do-gooder with no real reason why other then he is capable of helping others.

So there options really are to either make SB a carbon copy, or to find another path for him. So he is created in a lab, trained to fight, lied to about his origins, and yet still has looked up to superman as a father mentor or whatever. He gets out, breaks free of the mind control, so its alittle understandable to be put off by a character whos main power seems to be mental abilities.

He joins the league im sure in order to get to meet superman, and superman is obviously put off at someone creating a clone of him, and i really think that alone makes him uncomforable, but his distance from SB is seen by SB as rejection.

I think we just need to give it a few more episodes. The other sidekicks are immature yes, but have had experience in working as a team and withothers and trying to meld personalities, SB hasnt, he has been solo and locked away, and i think its obvious there would be some issues. Also there is a strong vibe of trying to prove himself to daddy there, in this case superman. And his lack of abilities that he should share with superman i think complicate that for him as well and cause anger. Like "I should be able to fly but cant"

Overall so far i like this show much more then any of the dvd movies they have put out recently so its nice to see DC animation coming back around abit to the TV series format.
  17. Thor is looking more and more intresting to me, for a character i never really followed in the comics especially. However yes, this is just more of the same footage that we have already seen to this point with just a few extras.

CapA, well I have to say so far has me intrested. The over all design of the movie seems solid and fits well within a WW2 vibe. Caps costume looks good. Really about the only complaint i have is his helmet. I like the mask idea, but i think it would look better with a real WW2 era helmet over the mask rather then having kinda an old football uniform appearance to it. Otherwise, both Marvel trailers have me waiting for summer movies.

Transformers, at this point who cares is my general opinion. Both the first two movies were crap to me and yes though good effects, i cant get beyond the horrible story, horrible acting and horrible jokes to say that made them worth while even just on the sheer action level of the movie. So i dont expect anymore from a 3rd.
  18. why do they always say "as well as his alter ego clark kent" when talking of who is playing in a new superman project. Has superman and clark kent EVER been played by two seperate actors in the same project?

Honestly i dont think there is really a way to screw up a earth/fire build its just pretty darn nice combo of sets to use.

If i was going to comment, i guess with the inherent fitness that leadership is as good to take as anything else, i havent respeced my perma dom earth/fire since the change to really test it out. But i have never found much use for leadership for my solo play style with my dominators. Your milage may vary as you might team more which obviously multiplies the benefits of the set more.

I would just keep in mind the playstyle for the sets. Fire and the fire epic/patron obviously have nice AOE damage, while the earth set really offers alot of nice aoe soft and hard controls on decent recharge rates. the sets are able to do a decent job running on 6-8 many team settings on the right maps. Keep in mind that alot of earths controls allow you to spawn control from outside of line of sight which makes it really nice to find a choke point to use for clearing large groups.

My best advice to anyone is just to play with the sets and find the mix you like, then develop that build with your IO choices and now incarnate slotting. Really im sure someone can offer you min/max advice but the only really "Measuring up" you need to worry about is to your own expectations for playing the character.

Interesting news! ... which radio station?, (maybe they have some kinda web transcript?).
Bane doesnt have to be a larger then humanly possible character. Keeping inmind that the Batman in the Nolan universe is a fit but humanly proportioned character, Bane could simply be a body builder that has been trained to fight as batman has, then that takes part in a steriod type venom to get more pumped up.

It can still fit because performance enhancers are very real, unlike say a true super power like flight or laser beams from the eyes do.

It just to me will be intresting to see how they use the character. As has been mentioned to use the breaking the back idea would put time contraints on the story that i think would make it feel rushed or force them into some Rocky type trainning montage that would just be way out of place.

I think its more likely we will see Bane arise as some type of enforcer for the mob that feels that its time to take back the city from a batman that is being hunted by the law. I would also imagine that at some point to fit into the batman rising theme, that Dents true actions are made public redeeming batman in the eyes of the city. I personally would think that catwomans role is going to be more about mending the broken heart of rachels death, then truely being a villianess to batman in the movie.

I forget his exact reasoning (which made sense when I read it like 10 years ago) but when he was drawing the book McFarlane intentionally put Spider-Man in as many limb breaking poses as he could.
If I recall the idea was to put spiderman in stances that truely looked like a spider in movement. So we got alot of pictures that had Peters body in a tight ball with arms and legs protruding from it to mimick the spider name in the art work and flow of the action. I honestly always liked McFarlanes take on the character. I know many hated the look and the tons of webbing that would fill the frames, but i found it to be pretty nice at that point in time of comic art.

  25. I kinda like it, its not only superhero-ish or i should say super soldier-ish, but i think fits well within the time frame of the movie as being ww2. If for some reason they had gone all polly-batman with the costume it would have seemed out of place and somewhat silly against the back drop.

Im just kidna hoping the pull off the movie well, Cpt A isnt exactly the most flashy super hero to work with as far as powers go and could easily get lost or over looked when compared to green lantern and thor.
