Hmmm... The traditional hero type caught my eye, as did the spelling and grammar comment.
We have the Golden Age Heroes SGs (Gods of the Golden Age, Young Gods of the Golden Age, and New Gods of the Golden Age <for reformed villains>). We're strictly classic hero types...no anti heroes or angst-ridden emo kids, just self sacrificing heroism taken to the max.

Awww, Heroid...thanks for the kind words. That is actually a pretty good idea though. He has somewhat of a WWII Namor type vibe only with filet knives. FILET KNIVES?!?!?! No wonder none of the rest of the fish folk will have anything to do with him!
The Golden Age Heroes SGs (Gods of the Golden Age, Young Gods of the Golden Age, and New Gods of the Golden Age <for reformed villains> is open for business for all classic hero types. We have no angst or anti-heroes, just full on heroic "sacrifice for the welfare of humanity" goodness.

My Resistance character is running Loyalist missions but notifying Calvin Scott whenever something important is happening. He has a mission now where he's supposed to eliminate Sergent Iminez, but should call Calvin Scott first so the warning can be issued that he (my character) is coming. When I contact Calvin Scott, he only wants to talk about HIS missions, even if I abandon the one I have from him.
What can be done? I don't want my character to finish the mission and end up as a Loyalist. -
Firstly, I'm thankful this game is SO much different from my prior MMO, Horizons: Empire of Astaria. That game was a lag fest and the customer service WASN'T....as in it simply didn't exist. Imagine my surprise, finding a community here where the devs actually played the game and hung out on the boards, reading what the players wrote and taking it to heart. *GASP!*
Next, I'm thankful for not having to craft. I wish we never had a Wentworth's and an invention system, but so it goes. At least I don't HAVE to use them to play. I'm thankful I didn't have to level up a dragon character and have him "age" so he could fly (as in Istaria), just to see what flying in an MMO was like. At level six, just hovering into the sky felt like a slice of heaven.
I'm also thankful for all the folks I've met ingame and to the members of my SGs and coalition groups with whom I've shared some really crazy and fun stuff over the last seven years. I'm especially happy to be part of a game which can bring people together from across the world. Two members of our SG on Virtue, Gods of the Golden Age, were recently married in RL. He is from Australia and she is from the US. Without CoH, they never would have met.
I'm thankful as well for our ingame support to help with hidden mobs in missions, and for dev "drivebys" (flybys?) on instanced maps. BIG thanks to Black Pebble who helped my blaster out with a nasty EB who just had the wrong powerset for me to get past. I felt like a total NoOb, however. The EB knocked my character off the roof and I got stuck in the fire escape. I'm going to macro a "/stuck" key for my characters from now on.
Right now, I could be playing the Star Trek MMO which I waited YEARS to see come to life. I could also be playing Champions or DC Universe. At any other time in my life, I would have bolted to play the shiny new game. Somehow, they never have managed to pique my interest. The grass truly ISN'T greener on the other side of the fence. I'm in City of Heroes. I'm home. Thanks, devs and staff. Thanks for almost seven years of escape from the real world.
Now, if you'll just do something about all the jerk hacking.
Go! Hunt! Kill Skuls! -
Honestly, I've given up trying to figure the reason some of the winners/honorable mentions are chosen over other, obviously better costumes. I just shrug my shoulders and wait until next time.
As one example, during the cowboys/cowgirls themed contest a female toon won an honorable mention even though she was not dressed as a cowgirl. The toon was wearing a modern looking top with detached sleeves, blue jeans, and a cowboy hat. She looked like she just stepped out of any country western bar on a Saturday night, after a night of boot scootin'. Her outfit had nothing to do with being a cowgirl other than the fact she was wearing the hat.
Sometimes you just have to say "whatever" and move on. -
Everyone fire up the Random generator! We should be able to crash the server on pure ugly alone.

Don't worry. He's just going to come back as Captain America.

As an old-timer, I live in fear of what might happen if my account ever gets hacked. If I lose access for any reason, NCSoft requires a TON of information to restore the account, most of which I haven't had access to in years.
- Original credit card number billed when the account was opened...
Say what??? I've switched banks since then and haven't kept credit/debit cards from seven years ago, sorry.
- ALL (ALL???) the serial codes (CD keys) from every (EVERY???) game and expansion put on the account since time began...
I've moved a couple times since then. The wife has also cleaned house on me a few times. I have almost NONE of that still in my posession.
- The original email notification from account activation...
That email account was closed years ago. It simply no longer exists.
So... How would I, as a well-over six year vet, regain access to my account, should something happen? Does NCSoft REALLY want to lose a customer who has already spent approximately $1300 on this game?
There has to be a better way! I propose having an ID on file with NCSoft so a mailed or faxed copy can be sent to confirm identity.
Any other thoughts? ...ideas? ...cookie recipies? -
Well, Vanguard gets love....Vanguard, that organization that accepts the scum of the Earth and allows them to fight alongside true heroes...and forces the heroes to endure the presence of such human refuse just to have the chance to fight against the Rikti. (from a purely hero-centric viewpoint, of course)
When is Longbow going to get some love? I know of a LOT of characters who have their backstory or character development containing some association with Longbow, while very few if any I've seen have ever referenced Vanguard. I'd trade Lady G and her mini-onions en masse for a set of Longbow costume options.

I have a disabled wife and three small children to take care of. I seldom have an hour of uninterrupted game time to play even the shortest of TFs. If I solo, I can park my character someplace safe on the mission map and take care of what I have to do, then come back and resume the mission. I can't do that as part of a group.
Having to work for several days to get one shard while seeing others who are able to group get several in an hour is really disheartening.
Please fix this!
Thanks! -
Oh, and by the way...
http://www.sealshield.com/ has waterproof, spillproof, diswasher safe keyboards and accessories.

Quote:One of the lovely things about CoH/V/R is that it will run on almost any computer. You may not have the highest graphics settings, but you can get on and play quite nicely on an old machine. Seeing as I could go to my local flea market or onto Craigslist and, for around $75, get a computer which will run the game, being gone for two years was your CHOICE.Honestly I don't care. Why is it so necessary for a name purge? I was gone for two years because my computer crapped out on me, wouldn't be fare after spending money to make the accounts in the first place; I come back and suddenly there're all Generic'd or something. It should only apply to trial accounts in my opinion.
Likewise, I played the game for over a year on dialup, due to my circumstances. I couldn't do Hami raids or join eight man teams with FX going off everywhere, but I could (and DID) play the game.
So far, I see two "camps" on this thread. There are those who think unusual names and alternative spellings/languages are great and have no problem with making up new names. Then, there are those who would really like to be able to get some of the inactive, old-fashioned, comic book style hero names for their characters. I am in the latter group. I had one concept I built for an ice-based character. I tried 24 unique, traditional-style superhero names for him then gave up in disgust when every one of them was taken.
I do believe we need a name purge. If you've been gone for two years or more, you're likely playing characters with those same names on WoW or some other game by now. If you come back, you can play your characters, but YOU should be the ones searching for good names for your characters. The loyal paying customers of THIS game should always get first choice.
Watch the new reality shows where people get their storage units auctioned off when they don't pay the rent. The storage units are cleared out and re-rented for revenue. That's exactly what should happen here IM(not so)HO. -
My wish list, both old and new:
1) Plain belts with metallic/large/gemstone buckles... All the belts we have seem to a) be segmented in some way or be b) plain civilian style leather belts or c) plain metallic or cloth bands with no buckle at all.
2) Longbow costume patterns/accessories...
3) Belt buckles with selectable insignia/designs... I would kill for an eagle buckle like Ms. Lib wears.
4) RIGHT handed gladiator shoulders... The ones in game are backwards. The heavy one goes on the left to block opponents' right-handed swings and the light one should be on the sword arm (right arm).
5) Likewise, a right handed PPD holster set...
6) Shaman-style animal masks.
7) A gloves and boots pattern with stripes around the top like the rubber boots have now.
8) A permanent cosmetic jetpack/rocket pack. It doesn't have to have any powers, just a jet exhaust/rocket flame animation that activates when the user jumps or flies, as the wings do currently.
More to come... -
Well, I got to Gemini Park at around 11pm Eastern, and stayed around for over an hour. There was no one there at all. So much for celebrating Guy Fawkes' Day.

Quote:It said:Its in the post as you have seen... Every time I 'advertised' the event, it always said 8 pm EST and more info on the boards. People could have of course sent me tell with queries as well, and if they did I answered. It offically started at 8pm EST with a 'gathering' phase. That means exactly that -- http://www.thefreedictionary.com/gather -- It was stated time and again that judging would start at 20 after, along with several other bits of information over the course of the 20min duration. I don't see where you get off on people arriving late.
8:00 - Gathering
NOT
8:00 to 8:20 - Gathering
Therefore, the instructions say to be there AT 8pm, not between 8 and 8:20. I hate to be a grammar cop on you, but the post specifically states contestants had to be there on time.

No powers that have an effect on other nearby players!
Players are urged to utilize costume choices, weapons customizations, emotes, and auras in building their concept for display.
Quote:Sure I understand the reasoning behind having a bio for the 'concept'. However, as stated in the rules they are NOT part of the judging criteria for the first two phases.
Quote:As a few have pointed out, having a panel of judges read & interrupt(sic) every character's description when there are a LOT of people participating live isn't exactly feasible.
Quote:I also don't see why it is unacceptable for someone to edit/create the bio if it isn't even required initially BUT part of the final round that is specifically held at a later date and time. -
Quote:Nowhere did it say players could arrive up until the time judging started at 8:20. It DID, however, say that contestants were to show up (gather) at 8:00.People complaining about latecomers being accepted mustn't have read the entire OP. Arkyaeon specifically says that judging doesn't start until 20 minutes past the hour. (Take a look at the Judging Times section.)
I know I didn't notice anyone getting in the line after 8:20.
8:00 - Gathering
8:20 - Judging Begins
Having run contests before, I can tell you that it's much preferable to have everyone there several minutes before judging starts, to make sure everyone is given correct instructions as to where to stand and what is and isn't allowed (powers/pets/etc) while in line. That is no doubt why the posted schedule was put into place, NOT to allow people to run up and hop in line at 8:19 and say they were there on time. -
For those of you folks that didn't know this was a "Character Concept Contest," read the original post of this thread.
I quote:
“A Tradition Returns: Announcing the Fourth Annual Mr. & Ms. Paragon Universe Character Concept Contest!"
I didn't check but I would imagine that exact same posting was made on every server's board.
Yeah it was. I just checked and the first posting in the thread on the Protector board is identical to the one on ours. Of course, I'm seeing numerous complaints on their board too. Looks like there are a lot of folks unhappy with the event on their server too. -
What just happened? I'm not going to say that went well. I will say it would have been nice if the judges followed the rules.
-People were allowed to arrive and enter late, despite the "be on time" rule.
-No powers or emotes were allowed until after the semifinalists were chosen.
-Bios were not required, even though this is a "concept" contest not a costume contest, and it was stated they (bios) would be judged in the finals.
My character relied heavily on his patriotic slogan/emote combinations to show the character concept. I never got a chance to display my character, nor did a number of others who were left standing around wondering what happened. Also, the judges never announced the semifinalists, just that they would be entering the arena and people could come watch.
Some of the costumes chosen were entirely ordinary NPC looks (street clothes) which showed nothing of a unique concept at all, or joke characters whose concepts had nothing to do with being a hero representing Paragon City or villain representing the Rogue Isles. You have a number of very upset contestants who worked hard on their character concepts yet were left out in the D wondering what happened, while others who were chosen did not represent the theme of the contest whatsoever.
If someone didn't have a bio, but had their character sent through to the finals, would they then be allowed to add a bio to their character to be able to compete? If so, I find that TOTALLY unacceptable they would be able to modify their characters between the semifinals and finals. That being said, why would the judges choose semifinalists they knew were unqualified to compete in the finals because their characters were incomplete?
Not cool... -
Hmmm...
Back in the day, the Liberty League SG was the source of great amounts of fun and was well known for things such as winning the first CoH Film Festival...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s1C14ZcSJO0
...and Battle Bovine Comics.
http://www.angelfire.com/comics/battlebovine/
Characters such as Battle Bovine, Boscoe, and the rest of the gang were well known across servers. They're one of the main reasons I migrated to Virtue from Guardian after my first year ingame.
Later on, some of the characters that I personally came to identify with our server are those such as Killer Whale, BBQ Pork, Comrade Smersh, Heroid, and Ireland "Maggie" Love (of Maggie's Rock). Whether or not they're "icons" to others I don't know. They're iconic to me, and that's the only point of view I'm qualified to represent. -
Isn't there a revolver temp power recipe? If you give him a sword or dual blades, and get him the temp pistol for special effects purposes and occasional use, would that come close to your original concept?
*Edited for proper name of invention "Revolver" temp power.
