  1. For those who don't know, Chris Roberts (the guy behind Wing Commander and some other classic computer games) is making his dream game...and he's taking us along for the ride.

    LINK

Star Citizen will be a massive sandbox "space opera" universe where the players will be able to do almost anything they can think of with their characters. Do you want to be a merchant, a smuggler, a pirate, a miner, a trader, an explorer, a soldier? You can do any of those things and more.

There will be private servers where PvPers can gank all they want, and where modders can build and change things to their hearts' content. The main server will be a massive persistent environment where PvE is the main focus. However, there will always be SOME PvP. Players will be able to set the level of PvP on their characters. Set it to low and the only place you may have to enter PvP combat is in the remote, lawless outer areas of space. Set it to high and you can get into fights just about anywhere.

If you ever played the old Traveller game... If you like Star Wars, Firefly, or any "space opera" science fiction...this could be a place to call home. Star Citizen will be attracting a LOT of RPers. I hope that means there will be a lot of folks from Virtue and from CoH in general migrating there. Alpha testing is due to start in about a year with release set for 2014. You can find me on their forums as "O'Donovan (Irish)." My user ID (global) is ODonovan, since they wouldn't let me have a fada (Irish apostrophe). My callsign will be "Irish."

If we can't be superheroes in Paragon City, perhaps we can still be (to steal from Firefly) "big damn heroes." The best thing is this is being entirely funded by the fans. NO PUBLISHER'S BACKSIDE TO KISS! Imagine Paragon Studios running CoH...but with no evil alien NCSoft overlords to have to deal with! *happy sigh*

Hope to see you folks on the boards and in the game.
  2. Truth be told, since it's been well over a month since Sorah posted to the thread, I don't have a lot of faith that this project will get done. She may have moved on to other things, which she would be more than entitled to do.

For those who don't know, before Sorah was Sorah Suhng (when she still went by her given name and Sorah was just her CoH global), she used to rent an upstairs bedroom from us (my wife and me). She did her very first web radio broadcast from up there with a headset/microphone I loaned her. I remember how excited she was when she went "on the air." She had just gotten her new computer just a few days before and was having the time of her life.

I love the girl and always will. To me, she'll always be the college kid who just got out of her parents' house and was juggling different parts of her life, trying to decide which way to go at any given time. She's sweet as can be. ...organized? ...prompt? Not so much... Wait a minute, she reminds me of myself! No wonder we always got along. When she moved out of our house to continue her great adventure, she offered/promised to do a drawing of Liberty Eagle for me. Needless to say, it didn't happen. I knew it wouldn't. No biggie. That's our girl.

    C'est la vie.
  3. The nice thing is that Chris Robers already said he doesn't want PvP to ruin the game. Yes, there will be areas on the fringe of explored space where PvP will be unavoidable. However, there will be a "PvP slider" you can set on your character, to indicate where they will participate in PvP. With it set all the way down, you will only be required to accept PvP in the most lawless of areas. You will still be able to have a career as a merchant, trader, miner, et cetera, without ever having to PvP.

Yes, it will be an MMO. It will also be a LOT more. Chris Roberts described it as a "massive sandbox universe." Characters will not have any levels. From day one, your character will be just as good as ones which have been played for years. The only difference is wealth and equipment. There will also NEVER be a "pay to win" element. EVERYTHING which can be purchased with microtransactions can also be earned through game play.

I'll be there with bells on.

Look for me on the forums there as O'Donovan (Irish). They wouldn't let me have a fada (Irish apostrophe) in my user name (global), so that is written as "ODonovan."

    See you "in the black."

Sorry if I have family issues and health issues which keep me from being on the board here very often. I haven't run a story arc, task force, or anything else of any substance ingame in several months either, but not for a lack of desire.

Of course, if I didn't come back and reply at some point, you'd have to troll somewhere else, so you're welcome.

No, I don't "get your drift." "Get along little dogies" is a classic cowboy song. They changed it to "git" for that movie. Guess that sounded more authentic to them. Guess they forgot that "git" means to leave and "get along" means to move, so "git along" doesn't make any sense. *shrug*

The only problem with that is the struggle DOES end, and it ends with the city no safer now than it was eight and a half years ago, when the first new heroes took to the streets. In other words, all our characters' struggles for the past years were for nothing...then they'll be gone...with no chance to ever win the war.

    Now THAT'S depressing.
  7. *sorry...it's late... Jarrett, not Jared*

I was hoping to see him back on the boards at least for a bit, or maybe even ingame, before the game closed.

Has anyone heard from him? I don't put my Face into a Book and I don't Twit, so I couldn't stay in touch there, even if he's active on either of those sites.

    Just wondering...
  8. Devs (or whoever's left)...

For the last 24 hours, remove the mobs from the streets of Paragon City. Remove the Rikti from the War Zone and deactivate the towers.

Let it be that the heroes finally WON the battle and the last Rikti retreated back to his own dimension. With that distraction gone, the villain groups retreated back into their holes, unwilling to face the might of the heroes of Paragon with no interdimensional threat to distract them from "petty" crime.

Let us celebrate in the streets of Paragon City that no longer do women have to worry about having to fight for their purses on every city block...that no longer do paramilitary groups hold gatherings within mere feet of PPD stations.

Let us have a city FREE from villainy...for the last 24 hours of the game. If we're going to go out, let us go out winners!
  9. Just a little BUMP to see if there has been anything more happening here. It's been three and a half weeks since I see anything posted by Sorah and I was wondering if anyone knows of any update.

We're in November now already. We have under four weeks before this forum and the game disappear forever. Hope we hear something soon.
  10. In case folks don't see my characters on Champions Online, which I'll be moving to when CoH closes, anyone who cares to can get in touch with me via Yahoo! Messenger or email.

    Y!M = liberty_eagle_coh
    Email = qorogh@yahoo.com

Anyone else who wants to post their contact info, feel free to add it to this thread.

Thanks for the great run, Virtue. I've spent the last seven of my eight years in CoH on Virtue (the first year was on Guardian).

    @Power Play

(AKA Liberty Eagle, Power-Play, Stars 'n Stripes, Taxibot 59, Longbow Rifleman, Vergeltungswaffe (redside), and many others.)

...and finally, a little nostalgia from an old DS9 fan:

  11. Hey, you! Don't forget your old landlord! I still remember the time you did your very first radio show from that upstairs bedroom.

Eagle and Karnal never did have that run-in we talked about, way back in the day. I still have the response I posted to her smack talk, though.

    Good times... *sigh*

When you have numbers showing how many different people you are reaching through a site and they are higher than the numbers of different people on the forums, it only makes sense to use that site to help promote the game and interact with the public.

I've seen several players that have had questions answered (by CoH Staff or by players) on the Facebook page that have later started playing and buying things in the Paragon Market or actually subscribing.

Why would they not want to take advantage of reaching potential new customers in this manner?

Decisions like that aren't rocket surgery.
    But they ARE brain science!

Why would they NOT want to take advantage of reaching potential customers? Well, of course they wouldn't...BUT. This isn't about the reaching of potential customers. It's about the DIRECTING of potential customers as well as the directing of existing customers.

Having both a degree and experience in advertising and marketing, I can tell you that an audience is like an ocean tide. You can either have the tide coming in (having traffic directed toward you, to build traffic on your own site) or going out (having traffic directed away from you toward social media sites, to build traffic there and take traffic away from your own sites). What they're doing may be reaching lots of people, but it's making the tide go out rather than come in. It's sending people away from the "home" site for this game rather than drawing new people in.

What you want to do is build habitual behavior among the target audience, both current and potential customers. That habitual behavior is regular visiting of the game's own cityofheroes.com websites. You can't do that by providing content on other sites. It just doesn't work. You're going to lose some people even as you gain a few. How many players who don't have Facebook or Twitter accounts now are being encouraged to create them by the devs? Out of those people, there will be a number of them who decide they really LIKE those sites and who will start spending time their rather than on cityofheroes.com or ingame. Each one is a loss of a valuable commodity (an existing customer) for the company.

    Suggestion:
Have notices published on Facebook, Twitter, and G+ that say "Costume Codes (or other free stuff) Available NOW On cityofheroes.com! Come get 'em! Hurry!" Use the other sites as a funnel to direct people to cityofheroes.com. Have costume codes, free game time codes, and other prizes show up in places like the forums, news articles, and game reviews on the cityofheroes.com site. That will not only bring new people in and direct them to the different sections of the cityofheroes.com website, it will get them to *gasp* read the content even as they're looking for the prizes. When folks get drawn into the game through the website, it will start drawing new people into the game and start drawing former customers back.

Does Paragon/NCSoft want to increase new traffic here on their own site or send existing customers away to other sites where they might stay rather than coming back? That's the only question that can be asked. As they're doing it, they have the tide going in the wrong direction.
  13. Just another long-time player (eight years plus) here who doesn't use any "social media." I'm not a twit. My books have covers, not faces. I use plain old Google to search, not Plus Iron or whatever that plus is for.

When you think of using social media, please remember they're online services that take up people's time and give them no inherent monetary gain. Social media is a form of online recreation which is in direct competition with NCSoft/Paragon Studios. Someone can spend their time on those other sites or spend their time on the City of Heroes forums or ingame in City of Heroes, directly supporting this product.

So, why is NCSoft/Paragon Studios directly supporting their competitors by releasing rewards on those other sites? Would they rather have us spend our time on Twitter, Facebook, or Google+ than logged into these forums or in their own game? If so, I'm fine with that. It'll save me $15 a month.

Sometimes, things really don't make ANY sense. Am I the only one to whom this seems a bit counter-productive? It's like Burger King having special promotional coupons which are only available at KFC restaurants.

    It boggles the mind.
  14. Well, I saw the reference to the phrase get along little dogie, earlier.

    It's DOGIE, people...not doggie.

    Definition of Dogie

However, the name did intrigue me, since she's a speedster. How about the name Lil as in Lilly? I checked and all these versions are available.

    Getalong Lil
    Get along Lil
    Get-along Lil <---My favorite
  15. Hey Kosh, you mentioned Soviet Shadow, a while back. I'm pretty sure Sasha's still around. She has a character in a SG I'm in and that character's login is always pretty current.

Here's someone I miss. It was always fun when he came to stir things up in AP or in the D. For some reason, he'd always be the center of attention.

  16. Never being satisfied, I had to doctor up one of the wide screen wallpapers myself, when Freedom first came out. Here's what I came up with.

Spay and neuter your pets (just don't tell them about it in advance or they'll murder you in your sleep).
  18. The last driver I got new was a 12 degree senior flex square-head...err... OHHHH!!! VIDEO drivers! You guys are talking about VIDEO drivers. Well, that's different!

I have a Radeon 5770 running driver version 8.821.0.0 from January of last year. I have ZERO problems with it and have had perfect performance ingame since day one with it. I have no reason to update my driver, so it's staying the way it is.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it, y'know.

BTW, I have an Intel i5 quad core 3.2 running 8 gigs of memory and Win7-64bit. It's run CoH like a dream since the day I bought it.

    That is all.

You can order one online. All you need to do is also order the shoulder-mount harness accessory.

  20. Just so everyone knows, low level characters are more than welcome. For those who might have a hard time trekking "Captain Lowbie" across the Talos map, just give a yell in Broadcast when you get in-zone. We'll have someone waiting to send team invitations which will boost your characters' effective level so the nasties will leave them alone while you make the run from the monorail to the arena. Likewise, if you don't have a Pocket D shortcut or other way back to safety, we'll do the same thing when you need to leave, so your characters won't have to swim all the way around the island to avoid a trip to the hospital.
  21. Very much what Ep said in the previous post. If you'd like, come over to our SG website (in my .sig) and check us out. At the very least, make a few friends and maybe run some missions IC. Just remember that you're wanting to react and talk through your character, as if you are actually that character in that setting. As long as you do that, you should be fine. You'd be surprised how characters sometims develop lives of their own, and you find them going places you never intended. Usually, it's great fun to just go with it and let the story write itself, when that happens.

If you need to say something OOC, you can preface it with <OOC> before the line or put the line in ((brackets)) to indicate an OOC comment.
  22. Hmmm...

I think I like THIS ONE a bit better.
  23. Power_Play

    Tights!

If I may go slightly off topic for a second... PWEEEEEEEZE?

Can we get rid of belt loops on pants?

    1) They are lower than the belts, so they don't look right. They stick out below the belts like someone put their belt on OVER the belt loops rather than through, and it rode up.

    2) Many types of pants aren't even made to be worn with belts, so don't have belt loops in the first place.

I now return you to your regularly scheduled tights discussion.
  24. To those this wonderful lady left behind...

Remember the good times; treasure them and pass them on.

From this old guy (me), a video of another old guy (Jimmy Durante, "The Schnoz" himself). This says it better than I can.
