Star Citizen / Squadron 42
Well it's both an MMO and a space sim. Think Wing Commander/Privateer as an MMO.

That was enough of a let down. I'd rather not be disappointed like that again.
Be well, people of CoH.
I waited far too long for another Mechwarrior game and when it finally arrived, it was a PvP only MMO.

Main highlights here are:
Is Star Citizen an MMO? -Another thing to note is that the Squadron 42 part of the game is the single Player Wing Commander type experience. No! Star Citizen will take the best of all possible worlds, ranging from a permanent, persistent world similar to those found in MMOs to an offline, single player campaign like those found in the Wing Commander series. The game will include the option for private servers, like Freelancer, and will offer plenty of opportunities for players who are interested in modding the content. Unlike many games, none of these aspects is an afterthought: they all combine to form the core of the Star Citizen experience. |
-Another thing to note is that the Squadron 42 part of the game is the Single Player or Co-Op Wing Commander part of the game.
I'm reasonably impressed by the support this game has garnered from its community. During its initial crowd-funding period it broke the record for highest crowd-funded game (to date) at around 98,000 pledgers and $6.8ish million pledged (original goal to get the game off the ground was $2 million)
I've been bouncing back and forth between some of my old MMOs since CoH announced it would be closing its doors, and have been disappointed, even with the one game I thought still had a community to almost rival CoH's. However, when panda-land was released for WoW, many migrated away from that to the other game, leading to an influx of new players. While initially that seemed like a good thing, apparently many of them brought WoW's acidic communal mentality with them....
I think Star Citizen will be my last try at the whole MMO experience (which started back ~1994 with Air Warrior). Even if the community fails to live up to CoH's high standard in the persistant-universe server, at least it gives me the option of legitimately starting up and running my own server, something other large-scale games lacked.
It's too bad though that alpha testing doesn't start until Nov/Dec of '13. Good thing is with all the funding stretch goals met, its looking to be a BAMF of a game so the wait should be worth it. (stretch goals hit can be found at http://www.robertsspaceindustries.co...stretch-goals/ )
Straff to the left!
It's an interesting game and I hope they aren't biting off more than they can chew, but by the time it comes out I'll be 50 or 51 years old. My mid-life crisis won't have anything to do with video games.

The nice thing is that Chris Robers already said he doesn't want PvP to ruin the game. Yes, there will be areas on the fringe of explored space where PvP will be unavoidable. However, there will be a "PvP slider" you can set on your character, to indicate where they will participate in PvP. With it set all the way down, you will only be required to accept PvP in the most lawless of areas. You will still be able to have a career as a merchant, trader, miner, et cetera, without ever having to PvP.
Yes, it will be an MMO. It will also be a LOT more. Chris Roberts described it as a "massive sandbox universe." Characters will not have any levels. From day one, your character will be just as good as ones which have been played for years. The only difference is wealth and equipment. There will also NEVER be a "pay to win" element. EVERYTHING which can be purchased with microtransactions can also be earned through game play.
I'll be there with bells on.
Look for me on the forums there as O'Donovan (Irish). They wouldn't let me have a fada (Irish apostrophe) in my user name (global), so that is written as "ODonovan."
See you "in the black."
