I just wanted to say a big "thank you" for this thread. The unbelievably atrocious sound of those demons was actually decreasing my enjoyment of the game. Problem solved.
-
Please bear in mind that most of my previous post was meant for the OP or anyone thinking about rolling one. I like Mind more than Plant, Ice or Earth. It really is a great set.
Quote:But that's if you're only concentrating on AoE damage over ST. And they're great lockdown AoEs, far better than the usual immobilize that makes you an aggro magnet. Again, Mind's strength is that it has 4 AoEs that prevent people from attacking you, at least 2 of which don't grab aggro(I don't remember if TD does or not). Mass Hypnosis can sleep the entire Freedom Phalanx on the LRSF with no aggro. Very helpful.Having an abundance of aoe's does not equate to being good at aoe. One need merely compare a SS brute to an Elec brute to see that. In the world of controls it is no different as a single strong aoe control like seeds of confusion can more than carry an entire set.
Quote:Mass confusion is an amazing power, I think I even indicated that in a previous post. However, if you are relying on it as alpha mitigation on a regular basis you are going to be waiting around a lot.
Quote:Total domination is actually one of the better aoe holds available to doms. Many mind advocates promote alternating mass confusion and total dom to lock down spawns. You need a lot of recharge to make that a very viable strategy though. My mind/kin can almost pull it off thanks to triple stacks siphon speed, hasten and 90% global rech, but most doms struggle with that approach.
Quote:Mass Hyp is junk in an aoe damage scenario. It's great in some situations, but if you plan on tossing out firebreath, combustion, and patron aoe, it serves almost no purpose.Quote:Leaving terrify as your "aoe control" if you plan to use aoe damage.Quote:Sounds like you are excluding aoe damage from your build, or at least holding off on it compared to the situations other doms create through things like aoe stuns. I've said nothing to disagree with that style of play and how mind/fire excels at it. If you want extreme st control and extreme st damage mind/fire is an excellent choice. If you want to utilize the fact that fire also does the most aoe damage of all the assault sets then mind is not the best choice.
Dominate lasts so long and recharges so fast that you could easily Hypnotize 3 mobs, Dominate 1 then Incinerate him, Dominate 2 then Fire Blast him, Dominate 3 then Blaze him and THEN AoE them to death before the first guy's Dominate wears off. -
My main is a 50 Mind/Fire. No need for PMs, it's a thread about that particular pairing of powersets.
You said that its weakness is AoE control when clearly it excels at it(it has four AoEs!). Mass Hypnosis, Mass Confusion and Terrorize are all solid powers for literal "crowd control". If you have a complaint about taking alphas when using Terrorize, I will sympathize. Although it has a much longer recharge, Mass Confusion lasts longer than Plant's mighty Seeds. Overall, Dominate is the single most-used(and useful) power. I found that Mass Domination is the weakest of the four AoEs, and specced out of it.
Mind's major strength over all other Dom sets is that virtually every power is a hold of some sort. Nobody is shooting back, and most of them don't even grab aggro. You can actually play as sort of a "Stealth Dom" with Mind/. It's so good that the devs rightly decided that a standard pet would make the set OP. You have two pet powers: Confuse and Mass Confusion.
A typical chain for me goes: Mass Hypnotize the entire spawn, use Dominate on the biggest perceived threat, burn him to death with whatever combination of Fire powers feel best for the situation, repeat on down the line. Mass Confusion is my failsafe switch for the rare occasions when I'm actually hard pressed.
And to top it off, /Fire does more overall damage than any other secondary. -
He was joking! It's a common meme that if you omit capitalization or punctuation you're being facetious. Especially considering that it's a well known fact that Mind/Fire's are awesomesauce in PVP.
I'd like to know how anyone could consider Mind/ to be "overrated". -
I ran my Ill/TA last night and Oil Slick lit for me every single time. I was using Fire Ball rather than Apprentice Charm to ignite, and it has lit for me almost every single time since I made the switch.
I've heard that the devs consider it as WAI. Still, your ratio does seem disturbingly low. -
I'd rather my 50s actually got some useful recipe drops rather than vendor/lowbie trash is my point.
-
I'm liking the new temp power recipes, even though I think their drop rate is way too high. I've been leveling a new WM/SD brute, and mailing a few things like Grenades and Revolvers from my other toons has made the low levels a breeze.
-
I like running my Mind/Fire at +2 with bosses.

Quote:Wrong. You can grab your first PBAoE, Typhoon's Edge, at level 6. You were right about the set being a blast to play, though.Dual Blades - Quick and dirty:
Attacks are Fast, but low damage - individually.
No 'Big Earth-shattering Attacks', no big orange numbers. Instead, you have the 'death of a hundred cuts', a steady stream of small, quick attacks - you are a Living DoT.
S/L damage only.
Mitigation, Power-up, De-buffs are all in the Combos.
Set presumes that you will take and use the Combos.
Until or unless you develop high levels of recharge and/or lots of slots, there's not really anything you can skip (except the Taunt). **FYI, this is also true of Willpower, so a very tight build.
First set Designed to use attack chains - so they flow together quickly and are very flashy!
Timing the attack Combos can be a chore and may (slightly) mitigate Rage generation.
Combo 'special effects' require all three attacks in the Combo to Hit a target - more emphasis on Accuracy & To-hit enhancement for effectiveness.
Initial levels - single-target focus, AoEs come in post L30.
That's all I can think of, off the top of my head. I have a half-dozen Dual-Bladers and really enjoy the set.
Be Well!
Fireheart -
I too use this feature constantly to get an accurate survey of the carnage. Do you use a mouse with more than 3 buttons on it like I do?
-
I just started one of these last night as well. Enjoying it so far. This might just be the Tanker I finally get above level 12!
So what's the common consensus on Jacob's Ladder? It sounds like it has a small arch, and looks a little anemic on the Power Customization screen. Not quite sure if I want to take it, even though I'm trying to build up my attack chain. Someone want to save me a respec? -
Currently back for reactivation, but subbing again very soon.
Definitely /Signed! -
Fine, some people prefer the quiet. And I was already cogent of the "public perception" issue. I guess I'm just used to the busier atmosphere on Virtue. Only one thing I feel I really need to address however:

In the 6 months I've been playing, Freedom is the only server that's ever been marked as full. Only Freedom and Virtue ever reach 2 dots, and they do so daily. I have 2 active toons on Victory, and it's almost always a ghost town. I could easily see Freedom's non-AE population exceeding Victory's total.
NCsoft Really needs to look into merging a few servers, IMO.
[/ QUOTE ]
You know, for someone with that moniker you are awfully pessimistic.
I play on all servers (including Victory) and never have trouble finding teams when I want them. If you are just standing around broadcasting in Atlas and expecting to find a team not doing AE, maybe that's your problem.
This thread is full of suggestions for how to find good teams on any server. Use them.
[/ QUOTE ]
Why would you assume that I spend any amount of time spamming "lft" in Atlas? I never said "I can't find teams on Victory". All I did was comment on the server populations. Obviously, I view bigger as better(and some people strenuously disagree). But I can tell you that it's a lot quicker on a server like Virtue.
Please, spare me your strawmen. -

Wow. Some of you people sound like you're jaded beyond enjoying the game anymore. Myself, I've only been playing since January, and I can't wait to see this. I get all excited when the sky turns red or green...

What Dom primaries have you tried at this point? Maybe I misread, but you seem to be basing all this strictly off of your experience with Grav/. Might I suggest trying a Mind/? It might give you a slightly different perspective.
You may also be having trouble with the highly tactical nature of Doms. Don't forget, some of us swear by the AT. -
Am I the only one that is sick to death of everyone constantly talking about one power in one set whenever there's a discussion about Dom buffs?
I have a level 47 Mind/Fire. She was never able to solo EB's. Now she owns them.
My level 18 Ice/Ice does a little more damage, but still has Endurance issues. Granted, this is pre-Stamina.
My 12 Plant/Thorn does a little more damage too, but still takes a beating due to power picks(her only hard hold/mitigator thus far has been Seeds). -
I have a level 21 Ill/TA Controller. Not only does she still have Brawl and Apprentice Charm in her attack chain, but I (single!)slot Brawl for damage. Yeah, you heard me.
-
How you ask is also important.
"r u lft" Ain't gonna cut it with most people. They'll answer back with "No thanks" while thinking, "not with YOU!"
Try something like this: "Hi! Interested in joining a 35-ish mish team in Nerva?" You'll sound competent and have already answered a couple potential questions.
Of course, being Virtue, lots of people will ((talk like this)). Make sure to respect that convention, especially at first. I prefer RP myself, but most of us end up dropping the brackets mid-mish on mixed teams once the action heats up. -
I wondered about that, too. Lucky for me, the only toon I've tried it on is my /Fire Dom. Perfect fit.
