Probably not a great deal longer, comparatively, than it'll take me to convert the 137 odd builds I've got.

From the sounds of it though, it won't be needed. If I were to guess without knowing their database setup.. they may just be going to put Inherent Fitness in as a seperate database entry and detect/save both of them as completely different power pools/sets.
That solution adds to the size of the program and technically can be viewed as clutter but it provides optimal backwards compatability at an admittedly small cost in terms of file sizes.
Having done programming in several languages I don't envy them the task though...

In Australia we have statutory rights which go so far as meaning we can get a refund or replacement if the product isn't fit for the purpose it was advertised for. (Presuming it was purchased from an Australian company). I don't know if you've got similar legal backing there though.

    UAC and CoH

You should NEVER disable security features unless absolutely vital.*
It will make CoH run without admin access, which solves all sorts of problems. I've used it on my copy and it's a beautiful thing.

    Try this:

The device driver is running in the kernel (so rights higher than admin). The helper utility is running with your user rights, as it should. The problem, though, is that CoH shouldn't be running as an Administrator, it's just that this is still a game designed in the world of XP, where everyone was an Administrator with unlimited system access at all times.
*Just like layered mitigation (defense + resistance + mezz protection + regeneration + recovery) helps your character survive... layered security helps your computer keep running properly.

  5. Without reading more than about a page and a half of this lovely lovely thread... Here's my response

My first (and currently only) level 50 tanker is an Electric Armor one. When people ask me what their first tanker should be, I usually recommend willpower because it tends to be forgiving. I've also seen some very impressive end-game willpower tankers... but then again.. of the 6 Ice Armor tankers I've seen, 5 of them were impressive. I've seen Invul tankers take +4 x8 groups of council..
It comes down to your chosen playstyle and how much inf you want to spend on it.

Here's my build. No idea what level the IOs are but as you can see, they aren't doing a great deal. Usually by the time I die, most of the team is running back from the hospital for their second time. I'm not entirely sure what I've got on Surge right now.. but it's SOs only also. The idea here was to make it as cheap as possible. All but one of the SOs are level 50, on a level 50 tanker. That means they're grey.
The resistance numbers and Ice Patch along with the 2 taunts, the heal and the ability to drain all endurance from multiple enemies with just a few casts of Power Sink though? Priceless.

Usually: Start Menu > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer
Sometimes the Admin Tools or Control Panel are unlocatable by that method or not available because you don't have an administrative account.

    Also..

Then post the results of these two programs:

    • CoH Helper - it will show us basic computer settings and your CoH configuration.
    • HijackThis - it will show us what's running on your computer concurrently with CoH. Click on "Do a system Scan and save a logfile." It will automatically open up Notepad and put the info there. Make sure Wordwrap is off in Notepad (Format > Wordwrap unchecked) before you cut and paste here.

If you want the size of the window then you don't want "renderScaleX" and "renderScaleY"
What you should be changing for the size of the window is "screenX" and "screenY".
Be aware that the client saves its current window size back to the registry when you close it, so you'll need to not have it running in order for any changes to stick.

Unless you're putting Sets in Stamina, two slots is all you want to drop in it. Three Common IOs pretty much ED cap it.

How come nobody posts Data Chunks... so much more useful than the links IMO >.>

    EDIT:
After taking a closer look I noticed you seem to be a bit short on slots. I'm by no means an expert on Set IO builds but your Net Gain for Endurance is a bit low. You're using over half of what you gain with just your toggles. I can't actually stay at the computer right now so I'll leave it to others to find a way (besides, as I said, not exactly an expert with Sets).
  9. Odd, it changes the window size for me. Did I misunderstand?
If not there's always the options of resizing the window the old fashioned way, click & drag the edges. I believe double clicking the title bar also works, especially if you exit the client afterwards (little bug somewhere there, it keeps the maximised size without starting up maximised).

As for DirectX, CoH actually uses OpenGL, not DirectX.
  10. Like GuyPerfect said above, it sounds like you have some faulty RAM.
A semi-alternative to the "remove and reboot" method listed above is to download (burn to disc, if necessary)and run a memory checking program.
    http://www.memtest86.com/
Like that memtest86 I just linked you to
Granted, there's no way to avoid physically removing one or several sticks of RAM if some is faulty, but you can check it multiple ways.

  12. If your friend's desktop resolution is smaller than that and can't, for some reason, be increased.... reply with what it is and I'll see what I can do when I get forum access again. Gonna be out for a few hours. Can't help if it's not a windows computer though.
  13. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh
    screenX
    screenY

    Gotta love the registry, eh?
Remember to export to backup first or make a restore point if you plan on touching system stuff
Edit: And naturally, you should have the game completely shut down before you try this. It saves back to the registry when you close it.
  14. Well... to be honest I'm a bit geeky and set the window size in the registry directly before I ever looked for a solution built into the client.

    • I can either give you the registry keys to change
OR (this next one is suggested)
    • You can tell me the resolution you want and I'll give you a *.reg file that can set those (and only those) keys to that resolution.
  15. I can whip up a *.reg file for graphics settings if you really really want, with your desired resolution, but it shouldn't be needed.

From memory you choose Windowed in the drop box then choose the resolution in the slider underneath. That slider dissapears when anything other than "Windowed" is in the dropbox so it's easy to miss.

    Dual monitors here too. 1920 x 1080 & 1920 x 1200. I prefer to run the game in a 1024 x 768 window.

    Hope this helps.
  16. So I got bored and I haven't slept for about 34 or 35 hours now.

    Can someone tell me:
    A) What good this build is.
    and
    B) What's wrong with it?

Note that I don't intend on actually making it.. I doubt I have that much Inf total across the several accounts I own.
I haven't checked this for Rule of Five, either. Just.. threw it in Mids and played with it a little, tweaking, before posting.

  17. Yeah, the comments on Oppressive Gloom that I've seen throughout the parts of this thread that I've read have made me rethink that. The character in question still has a lot of levels to earn to make use of half that build though.
As for the build itself, I never planned on using entirely SOs. Just knew that the numbers weren't exactly unimpressive and thought I'd make evidence available.
I'll look into reworking things for a little extra damage when I get back to that character. I've got several accounts with quite a few characters, on the move at once. Meaning that one isn't a priority, my elec armor tanker was fun to make and is now fairly boring (especially after the respec I did on her to a mostly SO build similar to the above Dark Armor one, gained quite a bit of survivability). Sorta gone back to my beloved support characters now, where build quality can be minimal (and a lot simpler) if you know how to play.
  18. Still struggling through the massive wall of text here... Just had to throw in my two cents.

Direct from Mids, feel free to import the data chunk.
I had a handful (about 1/5 of my enhancements) of Set pieces on this build. Without changing any slots or powers I swapped them out for SOs. Enjoy.

  19. I've had this problem on my laptop for, at a guess, the last week. Happened right after one of the patches (the one where they mistakenly put in Fireflies & Snow Auras I believe).

I'm attempting to fix it just now by doing the following (although you'll likely need to do a reinstall, I'll put instructions further down).

Temp fix: Try running the updater in Admin mode if on Windows Vista or Windows 7. Right click, run as admin, supply password if needed. May work on XP if you try the Run As option and pick a different user.

    Trying this now.....
Perma fix (until they break it again and I need to do this yet again..):
    • Copy the entire installation from a computer where it works.
    • Run the updater.. optional steps below.
    • For advanced users you can copy the registry settings as well, you may need to change several of the Strings though (eg. installation directory).
    • For people who don't know their way around the registry but want to "reset" their registry settings try the file posted here
For reinstalling.. the quick way is to copy the updater (cohupdater.exe) and the "piggs" folder (and contents) to another location then uninstalling the game, putting the piggs folder & updater back in the desired location and running the updater to reinstall the game. This will shortcut the process of downloading/installing, taking it from several days to several hours.

If you have an install CD or similar resource, STILL COPY THE PIGGS FOLDER before reinstalling. Trust me.. saves a lot of time.
  20. ATI Radeon HD 5870
Latest drivers, check every two weeks.

I haven't seen it for a while but I tend to run windowed with mutliple accounts/clients. It usually happens on only one window/client at a time. Never bothered testing it as I usually just finish up and restart the client.

It happened before GR, since I had a picture from earlier this year of it occurring. It's quite annoying when you can barely see walls, see through the torso of an enemy, or have to do an escort.
Try typing "/reloadgfx" in-game. Use it as many times in a row as necessary, I find if it doesn't work within about 5 uses it's easier to restart the client.
  21. The last mission "Freedom For All" (it's Single Player) from "Seer 1381".

Seriously.. those ambushes on a single player mission? I ended up calling support after dying twice and hitting the glowies. One ambush of that size (2 minions 1 Lt.) would have been more than enough, especially since if you die they wander back and sit next to where the Seers spawn in the mish.
  22. An alternate workaround is to copy the updater (cohupdater.exe) to another location (I usually just use a self-made folder inside the CoH one called "updater") and run it from there.
Clear out anything other than the updater (in your chosen alternate location) each time you get the error.
It takes a fraction longer but since the updater just pulls the installation folder from your registry settings you don't really need to do anything extra.
Default install location on windows (I presume people who don't use windows can adapt this method for their own use, I use windows) is:
32 bit (this is what you likely have) "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes"
    or
64 bit (You should know it if you have this) "C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes"

    Enjoy.
  23. Legally they should have an Unsubscribe link in their emails, it's usually at the bottom. Look for it, use it. Gold. I don't remember subscribing, myself.
  24. File: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LLNWEMR0

Up front warning: Don't play with the registry unless you know what you're doing and always make a backup before changing anything in the registry. Instructions below.

I'll admit I didn't read the logs you've got. However if it's your graphics settings then continue reading....

I did however do the following, in this order.
    • Loaded my Test Server client
    • Changed graphics details to minimum
    • Saved changes
    • Saved Options
    • Exported Registry settings for both my Live client and my Test Server client
    • Removed several of the String Values from the resulting *.reg files (server IP address, account name, installation directory)
    • Changed one String Value to match the Live server equivalent (added: http://)
    • Saved changes and compared the two files with KDiff to ensure there were no other glaring problems
I also did a comparison on the Options.txt file but they were both identical, so I presume you won't need mine.

To sum up, programming is a useful thing to do and here's a file that should change your Live server client graphics (and probably sound, etc.) settings to be nearly minimum.

Full screen at 1024 by 768 (rather than 800x600 which is minimum) is the only concession I intentionally made graphically.

Simply download, run, comfirm prompts, and hopefully play the game. If it's not your graphics settings then this probably won't help things. On the other hand, it shouldn't hurt anything either.

If you want to make a backup just go to Start > Run and type "regedit" then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh then right click the "Coh" folder (okay so they're called Keys not Folders in the registry, so what) on the left pane then choose Export. Name appropriately and take note of the location you save it to. That will generate a *.reg file from your current registry settings that you can use to restore them.

PS. You seem to have one of the hacked copies of DirectX 10 for XP, I'm on 7 now but I am curious just how worthwhile that is. I've still got my XP install on the other machine..

Also: The post you referred to (and that I glanced over) seems to be a fix for the North American servers & client. If you're trying to play on EU and have done that to the letter you'll need to redo the installation to be an EU one instead. Search the forums for instructions ;)

Probably because to switch sides you need to be level 20 or above.

Therefore, switching sides is locked. It's just a "try before you buy" weekend. Clever way of marketing it, but ultimately you won't get anything out of it long term without buying GR.
