Up front warning: Don't play with the registry unless you know what you're doing and always make a backup before changing anything in the registry. Instructions below.
I'll admit I didn't read the logs you've got. However if it's your graphics settings then continue reading....
I did however do the following, in this order.
- Loaded my Test Server client
- Changed graphics details to minimum
- Saved changes
- Saved Options
- Exported Registry settings for both my Live client and my Test Server client
- Removed several of the String Values from the resulting *.reg files (server IP address, account name, installation directory)
- Changed one String Value to match the Live server equivalent (added: http://)
- Saved changes and compared the two files with KDiff to ensure there were no other glaring problems
To sum up, programming is a useful thing to do and here's a file that should change your Live server client graphics (and probably sound, etc.) settings to be nearly minimum.
Full screen at 1024 by 768 (rather than 800x600 which is minimum) is the only concession I intentionally made graphically.
Simply download, run, comfirm prompts, and hopefully play the game. If it's not your graphics settings then this probably won't help things. On the other hand, it shouldn't hurt anything either.
If you want to make a backup just go to Start > Run and type "regedit" then navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh then right click the "Coh" folder (okay so they're called Keys not Folders in the registry, so what) on the left pane then choose Export. Name appropriately and take note of the location you save it to. That will generate a *.reg file from your current registry settings that you can use to restore them.
PS. You seem to have one of the hacked copies of DirectX 10 for XP, I'm on 7 now but I am curious just how worthwhile that is. I've still got my XP install on the other machine..
Also: The post you referred to (and that I glanced over) seems to be a fix for the North American servers & client. If you're trying to play on EU and have done that to the letter you'll need to redo the installation to be an EU one instead. Search the forums for instructions ;)
Between the Loyalists and Resistance, I'd be tempted to support Praetorian Hamidon.
One side uses mind police and will "disappear" you and the other uses poison gas and bombs on civilians. Hamidon? He'll just have a tree eat you. Much simpler. If we're all going to be oppressed and/or killed by someone, it might as well be the walking trees. At least they don't speak in annoying code or doublespeak. They just devour you. |
Update: After posting this I was absolutely frustrated beyond belief. I decided to put everything back the way it was and call it a night. So I went back to the undo check point, opened the recycle bin and restored the CoH files deleted there. Then, after doing that and went to bed, I realized that might have been a bad idea.
So I loaded into CoH to see what the damage was and..... everything was working properly. The resolution was back to normal, I could log into bases, the updater didn't blow a gasket. In fact the only thing now that still doesn't work is I still can't verify my files at all. It crashes at the 625 mark. If anyone ha an fixes, I don't mind hearing them.
As for my Directx 10..... I've had no known problems with it. I've had it for 9 months now and everything runs smoother than when I had directx 9. With it, I can manage to run ultra settings for water and reflections with no problem. Shadows can be run on medium but sometimes get glitched when I enter my SG base and stuck on the shadows in there. But really, it's worthwhile imo.

Failure to verify/patch files or endlessly repeating patches are usually caused by faulty memory modules. If even one bit on one of your RAM sticks isn't reading/writing correctly, it'll cause a miscompare and the updater will fail or continuously try to fix the "broken" file that gets loaded into that region of memory. That, or the computer will simply crash. One or the other.
If you have multiple memory modules, try removing them one at a time and running the updater. If the updater finishes correctly, then the stick you've removed is the bad one and it should be replaced. If you only have one stick in there, then you know which one's broken. (-:
I had this same issue with not being able to verify a few years ago. I tweaked everything I could think of w/o success. What worked was removing the game and doing a fresh install, not my first choice really considering I had no disc. I simply started the dl and went to bed. lol
I tried the remove and reinstall and it didn't work. After this fix, I tried everything in CoH and it worked fine EXCEPT when I brought up the window that access the tailor screen. That froze me up. I ran the registry cleaner and now it works EXCEPT now when I quit to desktop, the game freezes. I have now stopped trying to fix it as this one little thing isn't so bad imo.
Through all this, I can't get the verifier to run but I can live with that.... until the next patch.

Like GuyPerfect said above, it sounds like you have some faulty RAM.
A semi-alternative to the "remove and reboot" method listed above is to download (burn to disc, if necessary)and run a memory checking program.

Like that memtest86 I just linked you to
Granted, there's no way to avoid physically removing one or several sticks of RAM if some is faulty, but you can check it multiple ways.

Okay, I have a problem that seems to be getting bigger. Here is the situation. When I logged on tonight, the updater wouldn't even run. It gave me a error message and died. So I ran the COH Collection from Going Rogue again with the thought process that it would fix whatever was damaged. Well it did which allowed me to get into the game.
However, when I tried to access my SG base, the game stopped like 1 / 10th of the load in and stayed there... no time out, no crash, no return to log in. I even waited 30 mins and nothing. So I posted it up for help.
Then I started to scroll through the forums to see if anyone else was having the same issue (Previously not being able to get into base), I came across this thread:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=235723
Figuring that maybe the fix I did was incorrect, I tried this one. Now I can't run the file verifier (Crashes with an error about 625 Gs in), I still can't get into bases, loading out of say Atlas city hall into Atlas park takes about a minute and a half (Never did before), and Finally I am stuck in perma safe mode as I can't even open the graphics window without getting locked up. I can open the options but as soon as I try to switch tabs, it locks up.
Now this is aggravating as hell. I never had any problems before like this. The only thing I can think of is that recent Patch. Anyone have any fixes on this?
