  1. It's unfortunate that's the way it is but that is the way it is. Thing is thought when I say "NCsoft will not get another cent from me" It's not just because they closed City of Heroes (Although that is an obvious reason), it's also because those other titles don't interest me at all.

Why should I buy/support a game that I have no interest in? Because those developers need to be working? If that was America's philosophy then everyone would be working. Truth is a Boycott hurts a lot more than some developers on another title. It hurts everyone there from secretaries to janitors. The people at the top are always the last one affected.

So is that a reason to stop? Maybe. Putting all that aside for a minute, let's say the worst happens. CoH dies, no second chances. NCsoft doesn't care about the community and the boycott happens. Now "Mr. decision maker" is looking at say Aion and thinking it's their turn to die. More lay offs. More unemployment. Maybe their player bases join in the boycott. Now that group has gotten larger and maybe it might be better to find some 50/50 arrangement to appease as many as they can. Maybe even keep a server open for it. Who knows....

    No one.

No one has the answers. No one "Knows". I sure as hell don't and I won't pretend I do. What I do know is that it's my right to decide to boycott or not. It's a choice and it's one that I didn't take lightly in a fit of emotion. I simply feel that NCsoft has made bad decisions overall. I feel they need to at least make an attempt to reach out to the players who have been loyal to their company and offer to make amends somehow. (and since I'm subbed til March, thinking refund for 5 months) If they don't, then yes. I will be telling my story to anyone purchasing an NCsoft game and if that is "boycotting" then so be it.

  3. I'm not sure where I am going to go either. While I can get into a sword and sorcery type game, I have loved CoH for 6 years now and have played it constantly day after day since. CoH was the reason I got a computer and internet lol.

Now my choices are DCUO and Champions. I'm not particularly fond of the DC universe and certainly not of it's character creator.... if you can really call it that. Don't get me wrong, I tried DCUO and leveled a character to lvl 9 ish but I just can't get into it really at all.

As for Champions, I downloaded it over the weekend as COH has become unplayable to me for a little bit. I love my characters and would like to see them exist somewhere and CO seems to have the character creator in a universe that is superhero related. But OMG are the controls wonky as hell. I am a controller player (Logitech, not the AT) and Champion's controller support is "Buy an Xbox 360 controller". Seriously?

So thinking I might be homeless as well if CoH goes under. I so hope to God it doesn't though.

Maybe I'll give Marvel Heroes a shot as I have 3 adult brothers who are looking forward to this. But sadly (and in my honest opinion a complete mistake on the company's part) it doesn't allow for any character creation at all. Uber suckfest

  5. One of the websites reporting CoH is closing up paragon studios reports that they recieved the following when they contacted NC Soft:

Both NCsoft and Paragon Studios are incredibly proud of the success of City of Heroes, but unfortunately, the continued support of the franchise no longer fits within our long term goals for the company. All employees at Paragon Studios are affected by this decision, including the management team.

We will begin the City of Heroes sun setting process immediately with the goal to officially stop our service offerings for the franchise on November 30, 2012.

This was a very tough decision to make and wish the best for all Paragon Studio employees in their next ventures.

I see these things and pick up on "Proud of the success" meaning it wasn't losing money and "Long term goals" meaning they decided to use the server/ studio for something else. (Guild wars 2 maybe?)

I don't know, and I aim to find out. But unless you are the CEO or executive in that company, you cannot definitively say what NCsoft will and won't do.

I have read the article you mentioned, and one key difference between City of Heroes and, say, Tabula Rasa is that City of Heroes is not a failure. By any measure, it is a success. They are not shuttering it because it isn't performing well; it is. They are shuttering it because they want the resources for it allocated elsewhere. If someone else acquires it and it takes off, it wouldn't be a source of embarrassment, it would be a source of pride. Do you think that Richard and Maurice McDonald were embarrased at how Ray Kroc turned their little barbeque venture into a world-spanning restaurant empire? Or do you think they pointed to the signs and told their friends, "You know, I'm the 'McDonald' whose name is up there."

There are other reasons you're wrong too, but I really don't have time to get into arguments here, I have way too much work to do.

If you don't want to support our efforts, that's certainly your prerogative. If you want to sit around and think we're all idiots for trying, hey, more power to you. But I've just got to ask, who is more pathetic, the people working their butts off to save something they're passionate about, or the guy who has nothing to do but sit around all day telling them how what they're doing won't work? If you don't want to help, don't help. But at the very least, please let us do what we're doing in peace. Go find something you are passionate about and make it better instead of taking pot shots at things that other people are passionate about.

Okay, that's all I have to say about it; like I said, I have too much to do to feed trolls or get into fruitless arguments.
Someone needs to sticky this. Seriously. Those of us who really care are already hurting at the loss of the game and the last thing we really need is someone laughing and trying to pour salt in the wounds. Get a life. If you feel the game is dead to you, then why hang around and bring everyone else here down lower?

Tony, I've been here 6 years now and spend $50 a month on this game. I don't care who that money goes to as long as the game keeps running. If you can keep it going, count me in for that as long as the lights are on and the world with Paragon City keeps spinning.

Hopefully there is some progress updates soon as I don't know how long I can hold my breath. Plus life would be easier if I could uncross my fingers.
  7. My brother who plays CoH and DCUO noticed this on a forum for DCUO. I figured since NC Soft isn't speaking on what the deal is, maybe this might shine light on it.

    Again, only a rumor:

I'm a long time CoH Vet, but the announcement doesn't completely shock me, especially with Cryptic/Perfect World (not Atari, as they sold Cryptic months ago) owning the engine CoH used (Cryptic only sold the City of Heroes I.P. to NCSoft, the engine was licensed to NCSoft), and the license supposedly coming up for renewal at the 5 year mark (of which it now is).

Rumors that Perfect World might have upped the fee enough that NCSoft (which lost $6 million in revenue last quarter, down to $130 million) might have felt the fee was just too high, sound right. No official word on that, however. Many at Paragon seem surprised by the move (I had two friends there) as they really were working on new content to release soon.

Alas, no more. Development has ceased 100%, and the studio is gone like** that**-- some 80+ people now laid off.

Graphics aside, I still felt it was the best superhero MMO out there. Sorry DCUO hardcore fans, but that's how I've always felt. Though I like DCUO, it is just too much a console game (fittingly so, given that 70% of the playerbase is PS3 side), and nowhere near creative-freedom enough to represent superheroes as well. Champions Online, though having a great character creator and the freeform power building (for subscribers) is just very bland when it comes to storylines and even the villain groups (CoH had great villains-- and I will always miss the Vahzoliks and Clockwork).

Well, at least I still have all of the Blue King City of Heroes comic book run (the one us subscribers used to get in the mail from Cryptic every month during the first launch year, before they made the massive mistep of letting Image touch the I.P. in comics), and can always revisit the setting there-- cheesy/corny jokes and all.

Despite the dated engine and graphics, City of Heroes always understood superheroes. The creator, the powers, the villains, the storylines, the events-- they made me feel like playing in a comic book world. I'll miss it. In that aspect, I never felt CO and DCUO were nearly as good.
  8. In my petition signature, I promised NC Soft that not only would they not see a dime of my money ever again, I would also tell the tale of CoH and the "Business Decisions" of NC Soft to anyone and EVERYONE who considered buying a NC Soft title.

One day the CoH servers may go dark and that will kill me, but at least my death will be quick compared to the slow death the company will have by myself (and hopefully others) telling other gamers "DO NOT BUY NC SOFT GAMES"

I think most of the people who pick medicine now pick it mostly for aid self or (In the case of MMs) to heal their pets. This isn't really that good that a person who takes aid self would want it. Hey, maybe this is another power mostly targeted at MMs since they haven't fixed the pet AI yet! They wander off and get hurt? Least you can fix them. ;P

Ok, so you want to take 2 powers, which you probably wouldn't use much, to add one power that you had to click which lowers your DPS to get a little more healing from your Dull pain, healing flame, etc... That seems a little much.

I have a fire aura scrapper and a dark armor brute. Both are reliant on their self heals and I don't see me picking up this power for either of them. It's just too much requirement for too little. Especially as it's rather useless for soloing and I tend to do that more anyway.

Also, I never said the AOE placate wasn't good as I would pick that up on a few toons. I like the whole "Ambush" deal behind it. Just it seems that they ran out of ideas. Unrelenting is awesome. I just think they could have done something different for the presence so it wasn't overshadowed by the other one.

Wow, I was excited about this power til you said that. You're right, he didn't. So logically, you are spending 13 end to activate Aid Self that can still be interrupted and the only bonus to it is it will give you back 25 end... eventually

And clicking it and then clicking aid self is a bit much IMO.

So the value (IMO) for this power for non healers/ masterminds is basically a Click me to help your teammates heal you. Very disappointed.

Also, we are getting TWO placates? Why? Did we really need two power pools with it?

  14. Ok, so this is the last one I need from the summer event and for some reason, I can't seem to get it. What are you supposed to say? I looked at ParagonWiki and it says to say something "Crass" in the beginning. Well that isn't an option. Crass means rude... your choices are act official, flirt, and intimidate. So which is it?

Also, in the second part, does it matter what option you pick at all?

So what is the destination server for CoH? Or are you using the CoH website?

Looks like you were right. No way to fix this at all? Or at least reduce it? Never had it this bad before and not sure why it got this bad now.

Quick point out, this isn't lasting minutes but hours and on consistant days. Been happening for 4 days now.

Your trace shows a bit of lost packets so try turning on the netgraph (/netgraph 1) and see if you are getting yellow/red spikes or a strip of a thick green bar with over 1000ms ping rates when the animations act up.
If I do and I get the red/ yellow bars, is there a fix for it?

  22. Hi all. I am having some issues with CoH and I've tried a multitude of things and I can't seem to fix it. I'm hoping you guys can help.

The problem just started occurring this week. The game starts "Missing" things here and there. Like I can click on a door and it won't open but I can go through it. Attack that I make with characters end up missing certain parts of their animation (Like Katana's Soaring dragon: I pull out the weapon but the effect just happens. He never uses it to strike the enemy). Enemies seem to "Super speed" around, or move without moving their legs, and will even pause in knock up/ back animations. Finally powers sometimes don't show they are activated sometimes. Like you click a toggle and it shows it queued up but that never changes from the "Ready" look to the little spirit thing that spins around it when active.

I'm thinking bad lag? However nothing happened or changed this past week on my end. I also don't see it in anything else I play. I have reduced my graphics to recommended and even uninstalled/ reinstalled CoH. No change. Plus I only really see this in missions and almost never in the game world. Even when other players are present. Thoughts?

  23. Thank you Bradley for not just saying "No" or "No, you can't do that" and actually adding to the suggestion pool. lol

Ok, So if you do not like my suggestions, then let me ask what would you do to revive the power pools so it's not the same powers picked by everyone every time? Or is life perfect for you with a few powers only getting selected by certain types of toons? What would you add to the pools to increase them all to five powers?
  24. Quote:

I also suggest you look up what happened when the devs just decided in a beta to replace - not add, just replace - the "least popular" power in the Patron power pools. I don't think there was a single person who actually approved (especially as IOs would become completely useless.) You'll notice we have five powers to take there now...

    Perhaps you should rethink those.
Then why not just keep the AoE taunt and AoE fear then? Cause the single target taunt and single target fear really have no use imo. I remember the whole ordeal with the patron power pools but they had some use if even limited. In most cases I am talking improving powers except in certain cases where I think it needed more.

But of course I am just one person.... I don't think of everything. That's why we have forums lol
  25. In Flurry and Jump Kick's cases, I would do away with the percentile chance then as I didn't even remember that they had those abilities. Thing is all melee attacks in the power pools really don't get used at all. Just think they can be improved.

In regards to concealment, I totally forgot about it. lol. I remembered it as I was typing this out and going "Hmmm.. I'm missing one" So wasn't so much running out of ideas but never really having the chance to try for it. But improvements on it could be made as well.

I could see switching display and intimidating and altering them to fit better. However presence is just the neglected pool that never sees the light of day for like 90% of the builds out there at least. So some changes would need to be made.

Flight could easily work for MM pets only. Least I think so as I don't see how that makes MMs that much better. I had flight on my MM for awhile but it was only for show.

As for coding, not a computer code genius here but attacks are already labeled for positional defenses wise so I didn't think that would be a problem. However, I could see changing it to just a +3 dam buff. Fighting is fighting.... the idea was along the lines of just knowing where to hit someone to make it hurt.

The problem I have with phasing is when you hit it, it takes forever to go off. Making it a possible escape button but one you have to wait til it actually took hold which is why I stayed away from it. If I could hit it and have it take effect immediately, then I would think it was a good power. Maybe change it to a toggle type power then?

Hover mentions penalties associated when using fly. I remembered reading somewhere that fly gave -acc but can't remember where. If it wasn't that though, what is hover referring to? Or is it text that needs removing?

Whirlwind is...well.... Kinda worthless overall. lol. There really isn't any way to make it a real good power other than a Escape power. Maybe a PBAoE attack that damages enemies around you for a burst damage followed by a DoT effect similar to Fire Armor's Blaze?
