Quote:Aww ... sorry I missed reading that. And, sadly, there have been a lot of people who are really quite clueless about the game, yet somehow have fairly high level characters (particularly since the advent of AE)... And enough of them have displayed extreme indignance about things that many of us find to be basic knowledge about the game... explaining how folks took your post seriously. That was me... I was not mistaken about the AI. I've played this game a lot and know how it works, it just reminded me strongly of a few PUGs I've been on and their behavior. It was a joke that surprisingly few people caught.

Please read this: http://help.ncsoft.com/cgi-bin/ncsof...p?p_faqid=7804
This fix has been posted numerous times on various threads and reports are that it works for many, but not necessarily everyone.
Give it a try.

Quote:A weird bug, for sure. Did you /bug it? Even if you don't want to /petition for the inf back, it's a nasty little bug and should be investigated.I'll keep that in mind, but it's not what happened. I got the e-mail. I read the e-mail. I didn't claim the inf since I wanted to claim it on a different character, but switching characters somehow caused the e-mail to get deleted entirely.
Even if it was 100M inf, it's nothing I can't get back within a day on the market. Silly bidders bid sillily.
I haven't fully investigated the improved mail interface ... are there any viewing preferences like only showing unread mail? I don't think there are, but just in case ...

Quote:Yes, from what I've experienced, even "brand spanking new" products may not ship with the latest available drivers. If you are using what came with the card, please compare to the nvidia website and be sure you truly have the most up to date drivers. As for the drivers for your "brand spanking new card" are you using the drivers that came with the card or from their website?
Also, check the settings in the nvidia control panel. Make sure you have an entry for City of Heroes and that the video settings in the nvidia control panel are set to allow the application to control whatever settings have that option available. Sometimes a setting in the game may be in conflict with the settings in the control panel of the card and result in issues - you may have to turn a control off in the CoH entry in the control panel and control it completely in game (I had this happen in beta and for the life of me I cannot remember which setting it was - and I'm at work at the moment so I can't check).
Good luck!

It's got to be difficult to code a game ... at all, really - so much going on at once ... but to code a game so that it supports multiple levels of graphics quality. There have been other games that do not even try to support older computer configurations - if you want to play, you have to upgrade... I completely understand the frustration of not being able to log in, or of problems that occur that make actual game-play nigh impossible, but as people in this thread have noted: it's not affecting 100% of all subscriber computers, some people are able to play on their machines with no problems at all ... and, it's not the OMG ABSOLUTE WORST ISSUE ROLL OUT EVER! I've been playing since 2006, between CoV release and I7, and I've seen this cry every single issue.
It's not. And people need be patient for the unexpected bugs that have cropped up or reappeared (I seem to remember that the bug of getting stuck in the crystal was fixed on Test at one point, so this seems to have been re-introduced somewhere along the way) - there is no way that a limited beta test (even open beta - some people cannot and others do not wish to participate in testing, so the numbers really are limited compared to the actual player base) can bring out all bug possibilities.
Instead of coming to the forums and wailing about how you're getting shafted, do everything you can to help get the problems fixed. Report all the bugs using /bug in game. If the bug is that you can't get in game, contact support. Realize that the first level tech support you are going to get is not going to give you a good answer - and may not even give you an answer that seems to have anything to do with what you contacted them about. If they say "do a and then b" ... even if you know everything there is to know about computers and KNOW for a fact that doing a and then b will have no affect on your problem, just do a and then b so you can report back: Did that and still have the problem. Do what they suggest as many times as it takes to either fix your problem or get your support call escalated. Then do whatever that level of support asks of you. And be polite. Tech support specialists are not robots, they are humans. They have bad days and can make mistakes but they are generally trying to get your problem fixed (that's not saying nobody can get a bad tech - it happens).
And if, in the meantime, your game is not playable, find something else to do. In the northern hemisphere where I am, it's spring. The weather is getting warmer. Go outside and let the sun on your skin make you some vitamin D - let the light help you get a better serotonin level in your brain (and a better frame of mind) ... If the game is the only thing that keeps you connected to the outside world, it may be time to get some other connections. Don't let technical problems rule your emotions - it's really not healthy... Breathe.

Put my name on the list of people finding it impossible to read the numbers on the enhancements. I have enough trouble with "old eyes" reading work text (even with bifocals) - I am disappointed that I am now going to have trouble with my recreational pursuits as well ...
Please, devs - bigger text on those enhancements!

Quote:This particular bit of info does not, however identify this upcoming feature as definitively being part of either I17 OR GR as some of the items in that "Misc Info" section do. So, while it is confirmed by Herocon attendees that it is an upcoming feature, nobody has said exactly when.Revealed at HeroCon:
We can only speculate that it will come with I17 - but it might not... unless someone has seen something from the devs that specifies that.

Consonants and BlackShadow211, it would probably be best if each of you started your own threads so that people can address your questions separately from this thread.

Quote:I don't think that what Ironblade posted was in the least bit disrespectful, regardless of Steele's gender or veteran status. Ending an angry post with a "and I'm leaving and you should pay attention because I've been here a long time" type of statement is going to get one the standard responses. I thought Ironblade's answer was right on the mark, actually. If I was you, I wouldn't disrespect Steele. You would do the same-thing if it happened to you, heck I would too. If it comes down if she accidentally clicked hide recipes missing salvage, oh well? People have a bad day, everyone also makes mistakes.
Shouldn't disrespect a lady, and a vet from the gulf war.
Hope you have a nice day, Ironblade.
FYI, being an *** is generally not productive in any context.

Seriously... if the situation were that they kept moving the existing rewards ahead so that they were always out of your reach no matter how long you played, then there would be a very valid reason to be upset.

Quote:As do yours. Pot, meet kettle. Kettle, this is pot. When we're talking about the difference between three years and six years, the concept of "proven to be loyal" really takes on a different meaning.
But more to the point, I advocate in favour of ending a policy that grossly disadvantages (and, in turn, DISCOURAGES) new customers without unduly depriving loyal customers of previous benefits.
The sense of entitlement displayed by (typically) 60+ month veterans never ceases to amaze me. You seem to think you're the reason this game exists. Your posts certainly convey that tone.
So you don't believe that any benefits that are granted for loyalty are fair... or just (since the word fair is defined using the word just and the word just is defined using the word fair, I think it is both just and fair to say they are synonymous in the objective sense)? Seniority shouldn't count for anything?
And do explain how veteran rewards "grossly disadvantage" new customers. I can't wait to hear this. Keep in mind that the word "grossly" means "flagrant and extreme" based on your usage.
I believe that NCSoft defines the requirements and qualifications of the veteran rewards program very clearly, and they apply them to those who meet those requirements and qualifications. This makes them both fair and just, as there is no prejudice involved in the application of those rewards.
And you may want to be careful what you ask for. If they were to discontinue the veteran rewards program, they may simply stop giving out the rewards all together. That would mean that you would still not attain what you want - having all of extra things earned by people who played the game longer than you have. You would simply be stuck with what you had when the program was halted. I would still have more than you have.
And the difference between the loyalty of a 3 year vet and a 6 year vet is ... well, the 6 year vet has been playing TWICE as long as the 3 year vet. If you were talking 23 years and 26 years, you might have something with the argument that the loyalty proven by both is very similar. I am just not feeling your pain here.
Oh ... one more thing. At this juncture, 60-72 month vets really ARE the reason the game exists... since CoX is just now celebrating it's 6th anniversary, that means that during its infancy, these people paid to play an unproven and, I would imagine, ofttimes rocky and bug-filled game (I've played new games ... no matter how much you test them there are always bugs that come up after release). Without them, the game would have foundered and died through lack of revenue, and not been there for you to play 3 years later. Truth.

I'm guessing you're not in the Ukraine ... that's where those nameserver IP addresses in your hijackthis log are registered.
You will want to find somethnig to search for rootkits as well - malwarebytes does not do this, as far as I know. If you are not computer saavy, you will want to entrust removal of the rootkit(s) to someone who understands system files. Sophos has a free rootkit scanner and the new free version of LavaSoft's AdAware does as well. One of the best tools I've found for squashing rootkits is ComboFix, but you need to be very careful about where you download this stuff from, as hackers are setting up sites designed to be very similar to the legit download sites in order to prevent you from fixing the problems and to infect your computer even more. Download combofix only from bleepingcomputer.com - and there are people on the forum there that can guide you step by step in finding and removing most malware, if you need assistance.
The purpose of a rootkit is to hide running processes - and while there are what some consider legitimate rootkit use, the bad guys generally use them to hide keystroke loggers and screen scrapers so they can steal account information and passwords. The purpose of redirecting your computer to their "nameservers" is to prevent you from finding and removing the malicious software they've installed. If you do or have done any financial transactions on this computer, you may want to consider contacting those companies and, at the very least, changing all passwords associated with them.
Good luck.

Ah well. The HDD is dead. Time to start scouting out a replacement, for when we can afford it. Only problem is that it's an EIDE and not SATA system...
Hopefully you'll be able to find something when you need it. Good luck!

Definitely phishing ... Rule one to avoid phishing scams: NEVER CLICK ON A LINK SENT YOU IN AN EMAIL OR IN AN IM. Rule two: If you don't play the game and get an email like that, it's a phishing scam. Rule three: See rules one and two.
Seriously, if you get an email threatening closure of your email account, bank account, gaming account or threatening you with arrest UNLESS you click on the link and give up personal information, it's a phishing scam. If you are truly nervous about the validity of the email, contact the provider directly... NEVER click the link. Even if you get an email from someone you know containing a link, be suspicious.
It's odd how some of the same people who obsessively lock all their doors and are paranoid about being attacked in their own homes will click on ANYTHING in an email from ANYONE ...
<sigh>

Quote:As long as you are willing to enter the admin password to run the updater, you should be fine, and the updater should be able to do whatever it needs to do.I just did the same thing last night, created an admin account, changed my account to a standard user for security reasons. I've not had any problems, except for having to enter the admin password. I acutally run Splasher/Randomizer so I have to put the password in before that will run, then it launches the updater. Haven't had to download any patches yet, so we'll see what happens when I do.
But I definitely understand your reasons for wanting to do this, I'm doing the exact same thing for security reasons. It's not about protecting myself from CoX, it's protecting myself from everything else out there...
Just to be clear: I'm not at all being critical of people wanting to protect the security of their computers - I work in IT also, so I truly understand the concept of using a restricted account both in the technical and practical senses. All I am pointing out is that you are not going to compromise the security of your computer if you run the CoH updater as an admin whlie logged into a restricted user account. It is inconvenient to enter the admin password every time you want to play the game. Not unlike when I play WoW and have to enter not only my game password, but then press the button on my authenticator and key in the generated six digit code... but I do it for the security of my account, having had it stolen once already (I was an unfortunate victim of a clever phishing scheme - there was nothing found installed on my computer after multiple scans with various malware detection products, including several root-kit scanning applications).
I do get it.

Quote:The updater does do stuff that is administrative, when there are updates. The game is written with the intent that you will run the updater each time you want to play. The updater contacts the update server and if there is something new, downloads and installs the patches/updates. Installation of software or modifying existing software is something your restricted user account cannot do - by intent, of course - and therefore requires administrative access. Because of this, the updater itself requires administrator privileges to run. Once it has installed any patches, or determined that patches are not required, the updater then launches the game. As you've pointed out earlier, the game itself doesn't require admin privileges. The updater does, due to the nature of its function.Ok, now I see what you two mean about not being a bug. Still don't agree as I think any application that obviously doesn't do any administrative task shouldn't require administrative access.
And I'm not protecting myself against CoH. As a security software developer I'm always looking for ways to firm up the security of my home computers as well, and the easiest (and actually one of the most reliable) way is to ensure that the logged on account isn't allowed to do anything dangerous to the computer.
And for not running CoH on the admin account, I don't want to enter the admin password all the time.
That aside, I just might move/copy my post to the suggestions forum anyway.
Could they have written it differently? Sure. But this is their design and if you'd like them to read your suggestion on how to change it, you probably should move this to suggestions
