"1. (Objective) A female character is killed/maimed/tortured/r*ped etc. for the main purpose of eliciting a desired reaction from a male character."
Ms. Liberty is as (or more) likely the target of the provocation as States.
"2. (Subjective) I do not believe that the same death/maiming/torture/r*pe would have occurred had the female character been a male."
Offing Mister (not Mr.) Liberty would be likely to provoke hot-headed loose canon daughter Ms. Liberty as well. Mister Liberty wouldn't have had the Liberty Belt and have been just as vulnerable.
"If I dont think both parts are met, then I think it is just typical bad writing, not having to do with gender issues, specifically."
Neither part are met, so just it's just bad writing and not W[I|i]R. -
Quote:Sefu was the one Longbow I found likeable and he was in that arc pretty much for the sole reason of getting killed off. If it was Longbow Redshirt #5 I might have offed him myself, even on a bluer than blue bluesider (as Longbow is pretty much a villain group that is only tolerated because of Statesman/Ms. Liberty). In a meta-sense yes, it did do that. However, he was not killed to get at Dietrich, or for teh evulz; he was killed because he was in the bad guy's way. He wasn't placed in the arc just to be killed off. His importance to the story doesn't begin and end with his death. His character isn't defined by his relationship to Dietrich. He was an active participant in the RWZ storyline from the beginning.

Quote:Sefu's death served as a motivation for Deitrich to do something, how is that not WIR if they were gender swapped?Compared to the RWZ arcs, where Sefu Tendaji's death would not have been a fridging if his and Captain Dietrich's genders had been flipped, I would have to say that someone on the writing team has a big obsession with refrigerators. I can't say I care for it.
Quote:It think it's the responsibility of every author in this genre to think very carefully before they put a woman in a refrigerator. If they did this, the trope wouldn't be nearly as common, and so wouldn't be problematic. But they don't. They use it as a cheap shock tactic, just like this arc does. -
Quote:To borrow a Stalin quote, killing a woman is a tragedy, killing men is a statistic.OR...
...everyone's just looking way to much into it, which is likely the case here.
The whole WIR trope is coming down to "don't kill female characters"
When in CoH, males are being killed just as much (Aaron Walker).
Not to mention, this SSA gives the villains the chance to do what they say they've wanted to do (kill people) then complain when they get the chance to? o.O
You often here the request to beat up/kill civilians. Well guess what half the civilian populous is.
this thread is starting to look more like a "I don't like the story so I'm going to cast these terrible tropes on them" than anything else. -
Ya, after a brutal third mission (Cheaty McCheatface cheats) this SSA is a downer for blueside. I don't even like States.

I like the Alpha Slot.
I liked the other slots when incarnate powers beyond Alpha were rumored to only work in incarnate content.
Since they do work in non-incarnate content, I still like the Alpha slot, the rest however can go die in an orgy of Judgement spam (Ion being the judgement of choice so no fire was available).
Like the "Earth for Humans" billboards we need "Content for Non-incarnates"; -
Quote:All snark intended, there's story moments? Then you'll miss out on the major Incarnate story moments

Quote:The Trials are the resolution of all the problems we've been show in Praetoria - the entire storyline there has been building up to them, right form the GR tutorial, through Praetoria City, First Ward, and Tyrant's invasion.
And once the Praetorian chapter of the Incanrate storyline is over, we'll start the Coming Storm chapter, with more Trials for the big story moments as we try and save the multiverse for a second time. -

Quote:Or set new characters to flag as non-confirmed, existing characters don't change and the run-delete-repeat characters get at most one more shot at 2 easy A-merits.My guess is, they had to reset everyone because their confirmation marker couldn't tell the difference between a pre-confirmed hero and a confirmed one so it was either set everyone to zero, or make all current characters count as confirmed; even if they were not. By setting everyone to zero, they get their mark that unlocks the merits in the SSA.

Quote:Again. One 11 mission cycle (2+ days) per character at level 20+ to unlock the ability *AGAIN*.You don't have to run the tips all the time, just the one 11 mission cycle once per character at level 20+ to unlock the ability to get the hero/villain merit.
If you had to unlock all your incarnate slots, again, would you be saying it's just grinding the trials again (assuming you don't just burn your stockpiles for iXP)? -
Well that just put interest in both Tip missions (which had been non-existent lately anyways) and SSA on ice.
Well, I'll probably run the new SSAs once on my rogue spider for the story.
Hero merits are nice, the tip system *was* on the verge of being annoying enough not to bother with for them, the SSAs were a nice way to get the one merit wonders on lowbies without having to futz with the market. -
Quote:Both sticks work on the Dual Action. The one big thing for me...is using the right joystick to "look up" "look down" "turn right" "turn left".
The Xbox 360 controller does not allow that.
As for the 710, I never tried that one but I would guess it's got the same guts as the 310. It may have been CoH in general or CoH + Mac client, but either way Amazon didn't give me any hassle when I returned the 310 stating it didn't work with CoH.
As for playing with a gamepad the only real issue is things that require left clicks as that cannot be assigned to any non-mouse button or done via macro. If you can avoid location targeted powers it just takes getting the hang of manipulating the camera to speed up tab targeting. Goto_tray # macros let you get to all of your powers. -
I have a post in the mac boards about one I found to work: http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...00&postcount=4
The Logitech Dual Action gamepad that has a mode button and LED in the middle below the "start" and "select" buttons and has a cross on the D-Pad works.
The Logitech F310 did not work for me (I use a Mac, so ymmv). -
Quote:A high recharge trip mine field is a thing of unrivaled beauty and /Devices does it much better than Traps thanks to Smoke Grenade and Cloaking Device./Devices is just awful. DP isn't the best set in the world to start with, don't have her pair it with super bad set.
...
Seeker Drones exist only to mock me on Traps. Ha ha we've got -perception but we notify enemies! Bet you wish you had your Smoke Grenades! -
Someone beat me to the Naga, but as it is his right hand I'd give a ps2 style controller a try (logitech makes some for around $20 though not all of them play nice with CoH). That's what I use when my right arm decides not to work though for me it is motor control problem with only some loss of touch (so far) so ymmv.
You'll need to avoid targeted location powers as you can't macro the left click and combinations that are clicky heavy can be a pain (I use goto_tray macros to change the bottom tray and have the buttons aside from start and select assigned there, warshades are surprisingly friendly to this setup). The four face buttons on the right are big and there's only two shoulder buttons on each side (used by different fingers) and anyone who has skyped me while playing can attest to the rather positive click sound feedback of the pad. -
Aside from some help chatter that gave me flashbacks of barrens chat that's been my experience of Exalted too. Still don't have anyone over level 20 there but the players encountered in LFG DFB have all been decent enough.
-
Watching my global chat channels it would seem kicking puppies, pushing little old ladies, and stealing candy from babies would all be a step up from playing on Exalted.
It really seemed like everyone that wasn't on Exalted was busy poisoning the well there. -
Pretty much every one of my 50s is less fun then my 20s in random groups. Level 20 content locks out Incarnate powers so it is not reduced to Judgement+Destiny+Lore = lol.

Knowing when and where she'll spawn and having a pile of trip mines waiting for her seems to work well. Ya, it'd be faster to just wait out the god mode but when you want to make a point only four minutes of trip mines will do.
On my Inv/EnM tanker I'd get her close to the point where she activates it, wait for all my attacks to be recharged, eat a bunch of reds, hit Stun and hope one of the random chance stuns work. If I didn't get her stunned but she hasn't gone god mode wait for things to recharge and try again. -
If you like GO GO GO! style play (and your primary isn't enough to support that habit) devices probably isn't for you. If you like to be like Batman who can take down anything given enough preparation, devices is right down your poorly lit thug infested alley.
Smoke grenade and cloaking device gives you full invisibility (that the bulk of it(SG's -perception) doesn't suppress while clicking on glowies). Caltrops and a hallway is a thing of beauty, only outdone by caltrops, a hallway, and four minutes worth of (Hastened) trip mines. A mine field where you know an ambush will spawn counts as well.
Teams can be tricky, especially if you don't know the others or they don't know devices. Smoke grenade looks just like an attack. You know it doesn't notify mobs but they may not. You may be sneaking off to plant a few trip mines to level the next pull instantly while the rest of the team finishes up the current pull and they may follow to "help"/"save" you.
One last thing, if you hate to-hit debuffs, and I most certainly do, you will love targeting drone. It also has a better to-hit buff than defender tactics. Snag the +6 to-hit IO, give targeting drone a to-hit buff enhancement or two and for normal play one accuracy (or even partial accuracy if you're frankenslotting and have an inherent acc mod on your primary) will keep you at 95%. The to-hit buff is worth a lot less once you get into set IOs as you'll have more accuracy then you know what to do with but even then the to-hit debuff resistance will make it near impossible to drop your hit chance below 95% (through debuffs).
I think Devices is a love it or hate it set (I love it). If it meshes with your play style you'll wonder why the other secondaries even bother to exist. If it doesn't, you'll wonder why Devices even bothers to exist. -
Just this week I got burned by the very same arc. Well, I got my claws, but my two friends, that I waited to complete the arc to catch them both online, to get them their weapons, got nothing. That was quite the bummer.
Of course mistakenly thinking that the badge mission that Technician Naylor has unlocks the claws and waiting to catch said friends online at the same time was a downer as well. -
For anyone that actually wants these penalties they're already in-game.
Permadeath: Log out, hit delete, type dead character's name, hit the button.
Limited Lives: Only resurrect if you have a respec to spend. Don't reslot any enhancements if you want to corpse run.
Full Body Looting: After death replace some or all enhancements with TOs, delete all or some salvage.
Death Debuff Penalty: Replace some enhancements with TOs after death, if all enhancements are TOs replace those with the least useful enhancement they'll take.
If you *really* want the penalties they are there, thankfully they are entirely optional so everyone that got tired of them in every other mmo can continue to play without those annoyances. -
I'll second the unique play style of devices. My DP/Dev blaster has been the only blaster I've ever enjoyed (let alone tolerated) soloing on.
With smoke grenade and cloaking device (and someone's advice to play /dev as a primary) the mayhem that can be caused with caltrops and trip mine is a blast. I'm considering time bomb just be able to plant it in the middle (well, just behind) of a spawn to blow it into to my nice mine field. I already do this with a trip mine but it detonates right away so I can't move to somewhere with a better view before it goes off.
You'd need a team that accepts you as basically a ranged stalker who can scurry off and prep the next pull for instant demolition as the current one is being finished off. Steamrollers would basically shutdown /dev. Non-conventional teams could be very entertaining though. -
Quote:What are softcapped blasters if not tank mages?...then we will finally see tank mages. Which will literraly be tanks throwing fireballs.
They can keep their more damage/damage + utility/even more damage + utility power sets and have defenses on par with ATs that spend a power set on it.
