  1. Just reminding everyone that the next redside hamidon raid will take place this saturday, the 21st at 9pm EST. I'll also try and run EoE farming at 10pm on thursday and friday, but because I am coming home from college on friday, the logistics might get a bit hairy. Still, I think I can make all three dates.
  2. Thanks for the review PW! Always happy to see people playing my work. (I also love the pictures. Seeing someone else running around in my little world makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside ). Couple of things.

    Quote:
[NPC] Tsunami Force Leader Eberlein: Oh thank the lord, Blackout Girl! Over here!

...is a rather strange thing for him to say; maybe he's referring to Lord Recluse, but this phrase sounds especially Christian. Eberlein has the generic Crab spider description, but being a named character, perhaps deserves more description.
Okay, I'm cheating a bit here. I actually have a character named Webmaster Eberlein whose bio just states he is me (from real life) who decided on a whim to join Arachnos. "Thank the Lord" is a phrase I say a lot in real life, so I decided to have in-game me say it too. I came from a Christan upbringing after all, even though I am no longer Christian.

I also think I will have the mission auto complete upon his release on second thought, nobody really likes escorts anyways.

    Quote:
Debriefing: the contact says "Only the strike force leader survived?" but, in fact, a lot of the generic Arachnos troops lived through their battles with the Virtea (sometimes with help from me) so this doesn't quite match what I saw in the mission.
This is a weird problem. When I first published the arc the Virtea won every battle they were in, but ever since I republished it, the Arachnos seem to win. Must be something brought on by the new difficulty settings. Either way, i'll have to tweak the end mission dialouge.

    Quote:
Briefing: OK, here we get some internal monologue about what "my" plans are. I apparently have a theory about an "Inadvertant Messiah" - this is the first mention of this theory. It makes sense, but you may want to insert some text earlier on emphasizing that I now realize I am the "inadvertant messiah" and what I plan to do about it.
This is something I waffled about when I was first writing the arc. On the one hand, I didn't just want to come out and say "HAY U ARE THE DESCENDER K THNX BYE", and rather have the player make the logical connection. On the other hand, if players couldn't figure that out then they would be baffled about the next mission. Any suggestions as to how I could make this work better?

    Quote:
Briefing: Mako as contact seems decreasingly relevant as this briefing isn't from him at all, instead describing a big Coralax/Virtea battle in St Martial. I apparently decide to go help my loyal minions wipe out the Coralax.
This is a complaint I get about every single one of my arcs. I almost always start with one contact, then veer off at some point and describe the player's actions, or have some other party step in to give the briefing. This doesen't bug me personally, since I can always imagine the player or a third party stepping in, but a lot of other people have been bugged by it.

Thing is, I have no idea how to fix this problem. It would be really nice if I could just swap contacts mid arc, but unfortunatley we can't do that yet. I have considered half making the contact be a journal or a laptop or something and have the entire arc just be you remeniscing on past events, but since I do have a lot of contact types in my arcs, I'm not sure how well that would work.

    Quote:
Map selection: I'm a little surprised that Bile's ruined city map was used instead of one of the St Martial outdoor maps, since this is stated to take place in St Martial.
Short answer: I really wanted to find a good use for that map.

Longer answer: My justification for using that map was the fact that the entire island had just been essentially eaten by a giant shark (granted, you pointed out that it isn't necessarily a shark in-canon, but there are enough anatomical similarities and in-canon hints that that is indeed the case), and as such the city would likely be both destroyed and flooded.

    Quote:
Found and defeated Exarch Lotryz; he seems to have a generic Coralax Black description, maybe should have a special one considering he has a special name. He does have some decent dialog. One of the things he says:
You might not be too familiar with the Coralax then, since there are no Coralax Black hybrids, only blue, green, and reds. They're a custom mob.

    Quote:
though Ferrix and some of the earlier clues seem to imply that the Coralax are aliens from another planet. I'm not sure this is consistent with the official lore
Well it's never overtly stated, but there is this bit from the Coralax bio on the CoH site that sounds pretty definitive to me:

    Quote:
For millennia, a godlike being as old as the cosmos itself floated free across the universe. As the fetid swamps of the EarthÂ’s Cretaceous Period began to recede, this god Merulina crashed into the turbid waters of the expanding Atlantic.
That's where I got both the "From another planet" and "60 million years" things.

    Quote:
also, I think there should be battered Arachnos and Family survivors here, either as hostages or hapless victims being slaughtered by the Virtea and Coralax, with dialog screaming "WHY? WHY HAVE YOU DONE THIS TO US, OH CRAZY FISH GODDESS?" or something similar.
    Ooooh, that's a good idea!

    Quote:
On my second try, with my new knowledge of how this mission works, I click only one Abyss Well at a time, killing each AV before spawning the next. This requires a lot of backtracking (most of the wells spawn in the front caves part of the mission, while all the AVs spawn in the submarine base in the back) but goes much more smoothly.
The whole Abyss Wells thingy came about because I really wanted to use that Arachnos Submarine map, since it has a connection to the sea, and thus allows the Virtea to get in. I was kind of worried since all the AV's would end up spawning in the last room that players would end up aggroing more then one at once, so I came up with the Abyss wells as a way to spawn them one at a time. In retrospect they are a bit of a pain though.

HOLY CRAP, I just realized I could use the Grandville beach map! That would be perfect! It would have a great setting and allow players plenty of room to maneuver!

So thanks for the review once again!

One more thing I would like to touch on. I am HORRIBLE about capitalization. Utterly, utterly horrible. It's not uncommon for me to just randomly capitalize words mid sentance and half to fix it later. I have no idea why I do this. In fact, I seem to get a new grammatical quirk every few years. Like three years ago it was not uncommon for me to drop commas every three words or so.

But otherwise, great review, thanks for the input, and I will definetley be making some changes!

  4. So is there a full list of new costume parts anywhere?

BTW, loving the way the new helmet looks. I think I can put it to good use for organic and crab-like looks.
  5. Mr_Squid

    Your 1 thing?

    REVAMP. THE. SHADOW. SHARD.

Seriously, what is the logic in letting the coolest damn zone in the game just sit there?
  6. Made a few edits. First of all, in the first mission there are a few battles. For the sake of the story, one of the groups is supposed to lose every time, and they were usually winning. So I nerfed their effectiveness. I also changed a few animations in the escort in the first mission.

The biggest change though is to the last mission. Even though it contains several AV's it is supposed to be a rather easy mission, but I got a few complaints from people who said they could not complete it. So I added a little more help. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
  7. Okay, lets give this arc a shot. I'm writing this as I am playing through the arc, so it's a bit stream of conciousness. I'm soloing with my DB/WP brute Great White, BTW.

    Mission 1:
-Okay, so our contact is this guy named Nedro, who kind of looks like God in that he's an old man in all white with a big ol' beard. His description says he is a "wise old mage" who can sense "dangers to the entire plane". Um...I've never heard of this guy before. Maybe a little more introduction would be nice?
-So he says he has "forseen a great catastrophe" and that millions will die unless I avert it. He says the catastrophe is some kind of demonic virus, which I must admit, sounds pretty damn metal.
-So we're on an office map full of Banished Patheon. Okaaay...they weren't mentioned in the briefing, but given their track record I guess they would be onboard with the idea of killing millions of people with a demonic virus.
-So we run into our first EB, some chick who kind of looks like Carmen san Diego named "Thyphoid Lily". She's a rad/rad, and despite the nasty debuffs, goes down quick. Still, like many other things thus far, I have no idea what she is doing here.
-Ah, and here is our second EB, some bloke who is currently puking his guts out named "Pox of Despair". He's an Energy Assault/Dark Armor. I hit strength of will, pop some insps, and then this happens:
    Quote:
Pox of Despair smashes you for 402.97 points of smashing damage!
Pox of Despair smashes you for 1558.25 points of energy damage!
    OUCH. One shotted.
-Round two! Popped four purples and twelve reds and dropped him like a bad habit...

    ...and then he rezzed...

...does anyone actually like when elite bosses rez?
-The clue you get when you defeat him is also baffling. It says:
    Quote:
Pox mentioned that he had been compelled by others to infect people, but who are they?
Wait, is "they" referring to the people compelling him to infect others, or the people he is infecting?
-Nedro is a man of few words apparently. Upon exiting he just says:
    Quote:
Alas, I see greater evil still.
Dagnabit! Thought I had gotten all the evil around here! Bet the rest of the evil rolled under the couch.

    Mission 2:
    So Nedro says:
    Quote:
As I feared, this Pox was not the sole source of the plague to come. Even now another leads a horde of the ill to infect us all. We must stop this new threat and learn more of those who have caused it.
Wait, why do they want to kill a bunch of people again? He then follows up with:
    Quote:
This infectious horde just recently arrived at the ports. Go there quickly and stop the leprous legion.
So...they came by boat? Huh. You think the legions of hell would travel in something more flashy than a cargo ship. I do like "Leprous Legion" though. Perhaps they will be leaping like lusty llamas?
-Oh good, were on the warburg map from the LRSF. Glad were not in that crappy cargo ship map.
-So our foes are indeed a bunch of dudes with leprosy, who belong to the villaingroup "Leper Colony". They must throw some awesome parties!
-Ran into a custom boss named "Marcus Cadaver MD". Wow, geez, if I had that last name I would change it in a heartbeat. Hes a necro/poison MM. Thing is, our two objectives are "defeat the horde" and "defeat the leader", and defeating him accomplished neither of those two. So once again, a completely pointless boss.
-So apparently the real leader is a guy named "The Leper King". Huh. Appropriate name. But I can't take him seriously, as he's using that horrible "tin crown" hairstyle that makes him look like he either came back from a birthday party or a halloween party where he dressed up like Jughead. Didn't catch his powers because he quickly killed me.
-Okay, one of the best lines of dialogue from the ENTIRE MA:
    Quote:
[NPC] Leper King: I'll give a free ear to anyone who can save me!
[NPC] Colony Hunter: Oooo, free ears. I'm so there.
    effing classic.
-Aww phooey. Turns out defeating the Leper King wasnt enough to complete the mission. Looks like a defeat all...*grumblemumble*
-Turns out a defeat all on the Warburg Malta map isn't too bad. There are certainly far worse maps to get a defeat all on, like that big towering factory map (THAT MEANS YOU UNAI KEMEN!!!).
-So the clue for mission completion is:
    Quote:
The note on Leper King detailed the attack plans. Apparently, he was under orders by a Doctor Contagion. The letterhead on the note is from a hospital.
Um, remind me what this has to do with the four horsemen of the apocalypse again? I mean we have pestilence certainly, but thats only one out of four.

    Mission 3:
-So my send off text is:
    Quote:
Go now. Destroy his lab and send him back to whatever infernal realm he now calls home.
Is it just me, or does the idea of a demon with a doctorate strike anyone as really wierd? I mean can you imagine this guy in medical school? He must have been a FREAKIN' PARTY ANIMAL WOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
-Were on the Mother Mayhem asylum map, as expected. I'm kind of getting sick of this map though. Seems like nearly every MA arc has it.
    -So my objectives are:
    Quote:
Defeat Pox, Defeat Lilly, Defeat Dr. Cadaver, Defeat Dr. Contagion
Wait, didnt I already defeat 3 of those guys? What are they doing back here again? And who the hell are they anyway?
-So the enemies here are the imaginitively titled "Hospital" villaingroup. And as you would expect, they are just dudes in hospital uniforms. This makes it all the stranger when the very first foe I ran into was an Anesthesiologist who was a spines/poison.

Let me reiterate that. A perfectly normal looking woman in a hospital outfit just grew spines and spat poison out her mouth.
-Oh boy. Pox of despair again. He's doing the groundpunchreact emote, so it looks like he is having a siezure. Which on second thought, may have been the point.
-Remember how I said Thyphoid Lily wasn't too bad the first time? Well this time she killed me FIVE TIMES, due to the anesthesiologists spamming poison debuffs at me.
-So when Thyphoid Lily finally died she said:
    Quote:
[NPC] Thyphoid Lilly: A pox on your souuuuuuu......
    my soup?
    -So here's Dr. Contagion's bio:
    Quote:
Dr. Conrad T. Johns was a prominent doctor and scientist. All that changed when his lab exploded spraying him with a multitude of experimental chemicals. At first, things seemed ok. After he healed, he noticed many of his terminal patients were improving and he felt great. However, this feeling was short lived as his wife and children slowly began to sicken, and he discovered far too late that his body was producing radiation that was both killing and healing those around him. Some think he snapped when his family died, others believed he was always twisted. Regardless, now he wants the whole world to turn sick and wither away.
Conrad t. Johns...Con...T...Johns...oh wow, that's a bad pun. And wasn't this guy supposed to be a demon?
    -When encountered Dr. Contagion said:
    Quote:
NPC] Doctor Contagion: Once the Omega Flu is unleashed Lord Ruinous will have to make me first among the four.
Wait...do you mean Lord Recluse? And the four patrons? When did Arachnos work their way into this?
-And we're done. Upon my return Nedro says:
    Quote:
have been the grand healer of our world for you have stopped the nether plague from enveloping us all. My gratitude can not express the greatness of your deeds.
Wasn't it just called the Omega Flu? Ugh...

Well the best I can say about this arc is that it has some cute dialogue. But otherwise the story is incomprehensible, the mobs are overpowered, and the overall presentation is horribly shoddy. I'm sorry, but I can't give this any higher than one star.
  8. I'll offer up arc 339222 "The Descender". The level range on this one is a bit odd. For the first four missions it's level 25-31, but for the last one it jumps up to 45-54 (don't worry, you get plenty of help, and someone lower than 45 could definetley run it). You're probably wondering why the level range jumps like that. Well most people who have run the arc have asked the same thing, only to say "ooooh, I get it!" when they come to the end of mission four.
  9. Quote:
I don't consider "multi-arc" a valid format. One arc is supposed to be a complete story. Whether the developers drew the line at three or five or fifty acts, that's how much space you get. If you can't fit what you want into the provided space you have to start deciding what stays and what goes. To the extent that the architect failed to color within the lines, the arc fails. So as far as I'm concerned there are no "multi-arcs", only cases of multiple incomplete arcs that may reference each other.
Lord of the Rings is essentially one big book split into three parts, Star Wars is essentially one big movie split into six parts, and the Belgariad-Mallorean, which I consider to be one of the most enjoyable, well-written fantasy stories ever is essentially one big book split into a whopping ten parts.

Just because an arc doesn't come packaged into one neat portion doesn't mean it's not a viable story. There are quite a few advantages to having arcs in multiple parts. For example, they allow players to catch a breath and decide if they want to continue. If a player does not like the first part, then they don't have to continue on to the next few parts, and if they do like it, then they don't have to play the entire thing in one sitting.

Of course the obvious reason why players make multi-part arcs is because they feel that their story is far too big to fit into one arc. When I was making The Lost Choir for instance, I started with the intention of making it one five mission arc. But the more I planned it out on paper, the more I saw I had to go to a second arc. And even then, two arcs were not enough, and I had to make another, third arc to wrap the whole thing up. I guess if I tried really hard I could have crammed it all into one, but then I would have lost the massive scope I was aiming for.

Besides, it has never been said that one arc is one story. The dev's have never said that multi-part arcs are forbidden. Hell, there are even a few official arcs that really only work as one big story (the Faultline arcs immediatley come to mind, and the other post I-3 hazard zone arcs are also like this to a lesser degree.)

But that's all just my opinion. I just like my stories to be BIG.

Now THAT is something I can work off of! Thanks a bunch!
  11. So I have an idea for a custom MA villaingroup revolving around deep sea life. Now, I'm not looking for sharks, as I already know how to do that

What I want is something that looks like this:

What do you guys think. Is it doable?

The file size limit ain't broke. They shouldn't be screwing with it. We don't need ten-mission arcs and we don't need arcs with thirty custom mobs in them.
  14. I'm currently thinking about making a thread where I will create Let's Plays of MA arcs. If you don't know what a Let's Play is, it's pretty much just a playthrough of a game with video or screenshots as well as commentary. Thing is, I really have zero experience with making films of any kind.

So I ask you all, Multimedia Gurus. What sort of programs would I need to capture video and sound in game, as well as my commentary, edit it, and post it to youtube?
  15. This arc is by far the creepiest dang arc in the entire AE. A very well deserved gratz to you!
  16. First of all I would like to say that this is indeed an old arc. It was originally published shortly after I14's release, and recieved a respectable amount of attention. However, I had to remove it to make way for my 3-part arc "The Lost Choir" (which is currently nominated for best Multi-part arc in Bubbawheat's player's choice awards). I recently bought additional slots, gave it some more polish, and republished it, but I only got one solitary play. I put far too much effort into this to just let it sit at one playthrough.

That being said, I think this might be my strongest arc. It benefits from being through a TON of revisions, as well as one complete rewrite. It's a villainous tale, and a very villainous one at that. Be sure to leave your moral compass at the door in other words.

One other thing. I am currently pondering making a sequel to this arc, and I would like opinions on wether I should go through with it. As it stands the ending is somewhat open ended. Would you like it to stay that way? Or would you like an exploration of the events proceeding the world-shattering events of the arc.

Please check it out, and I hope you enjoy!

    Killing pigs

You know, I'm going into game design, and the more I look at other MMO's the more things I see bafflingly wrong about them, and the more things I see CoH doing right. If I ever get around to designing an MMO (and I hope to do so, look for it around November 2035), here is my big list of designer commandments.

    1. Make the player feel special, powerful and IMPORTANT.
    2. Playing in groups should be encouraged, and players should WANT to play in groups, but grouping should never be REQUIRED.
    3. Never put a brick wall between a player and his real life friends. If two characters want to play together, they should be able to, level and skill differences be damned.
    4. At the level cap the player should feel more powerful than 80% of the foes in the game.
    5. Customization should only be as deep as a player wants it to be. If they want to tweak every nuance of their character, let them. But if they just want to forget about customization and play, also let them.

I might think of more, but these five are a good start.
  18. Wait, crap, I can't come. Forgot that night is D+D night.

No problem, I was just very confused by the whole thing. I kept expecting some big revelation to pop up at the end to connect the whole thing, but instead it came across as a series of unconnected vignettes. In retrospect it wasn't nearly as confusing as I found it right after I played it, and you still did a very good job.

I guess I just needed a night to sleep on it and wrap my head around it.

    1st place: The Lost Choir #123675, 136959, 141011 @MrSquid. (Because...well...it's mine...and I want to win!)

2nd place: The Consequences of War Part 1 #227331 and Part 2 #241496 @Dalghryn (A lot of people forget that Paragon City just came out of a MASSIVE conflict in the Rikti war. This arc shows just how bad it was, and does a great job of it too.)

And yet... these were the same people who would complain constantly over Linkshell Chat about having to wait 20 minutes for the airship to show up, or ride a Chocobo for half an hour to reach some obscure camp in the middle of nowhere. Or about the number of hours they'd spent sitting around in Jeuno trying to get a team going. Or about the number of months it took them to obtain all of the gear, spells, level-cap unlocks, secret zone unlocks and faction reputation necessary to be considered worthy of team invites within even a 5-10 level span. Or how much of a hassle it was getting a good camp location where you could effectively fight the monsters you were grinding for EXP without having to compete with a dozen other teams over the same spawns. Or the Notorious Monster system, which encouraged all kinds of ridiculous griefing and drama, and was the main way most players encountered RMT farmers in game. Or about how many times they'd died enough to de-level entirely, and how wary that made everyone of trying out any new content without following someone else's fine tuned strategy to the letter. Or the incredibly low drop rates of the high-end raid content, where you could go for months at a time without successfully completing an event, and even when you did, your chances were less than 1 in 100 of actually getting a reward. Or about how we'd been camping King Ranperre's Tomb for six hours, but some other guild was able to get the Vrtra legendary dragon spawn because they were using taunt bots, or because of server latency, or because it's just crummy design to put something like that on a 3-4 day timer and then load it with some of the best loot in the game, if you don't want players getting pissed at each other over it.

What they didn't seem to realise was that these problems could all be summed up as Time Sinks. The game developers needed to keep subscriptions going by making everything as time consuming as possible. There was a lot of excellence and beauty in that game, but it was clear that it only existed to provide a minimum effective incentive to put up with the rest of it.

This game... the developers seem to respect our time. And more importantly, they get involved. I haunted the official FFXI forums pretty much around the clock, and I didn't even know the names of any of the developers. Maybe that's because they were focused on communicating with their core audience, the Japanese players, but it's still a pretty unfavorable contrast to the way the developers here operate. They respect us and they listen to us. They may not agree with what they hear, but they bother to check in the first place.

    ...

That said... MORE STORY CONTENT IN ISSUE 17, INDEPENDENT OF WHAT'S CONTAINED IN THE PAID PORTION OF GOING ROGUE, PLEASE!!!
Damn...and I was THIS close to buying FFXI instead of CoH. Seriously, I was holding both boxes in my hands while my Mom tapped her foot behind me.
