Was the CoH/CoV movie scrapped?

Haven't heard any news about it other than there are plans for it.

All that ever happened as far as a movie goes was the rights to make it were given to some studio that I am far too lazy to figure out the name of, nothing else.

There were never plans for it. Someone bought the rights to make it, but that happens all the time. It's kind of like insurance: If Joe buys the rights to make a movie and Sally actually has an idea for that movie, Sally has to ask Joe's permission, and probably pay Joe a bunch of money to do it.

It's hard to believe anyone would think a CoH movie would be a good idea.

Superhero movies have fallen into two general camps. There are those based on IP beloved by millions, like Superman, Spiderman, Hulk, etc. And there are those based on obscure titles that had compelling stories like Hellboy or Watchmen (I know some fans will take umbrage at me calling Watchmen obscure, but in the grander literary landscape it certainly was.)

COH at its high water mark had a couple hundred thousand subscribers. So it's not in the "widely beloved IP" category. And while I have experienced many fun story arcs, I can't think of any that would form a compelling basis of a movie.

So unless someone like Mauricio del Toro suddenly becomes infatuated with COH, I'd say the odds of a COH movie remain exactly zero.

While I agree with you on the odds of a CoH movie actually being made, I think a movie covering the First Rikti War might be pretty interesting, especially if they cover the Alpha and Omega Gambit, and especially if some of the heroes on the Omega Team had their characters built up throughout the movie
Known members of the Omega Team:
- Hero 1 (unless the movie also covers the second invasion: fate unknown)
- Glacia (unless the movie also covers the second invasion: fate unknown)

- Ajax (caught by a stasis ray before entering the portal to the Rikti Homeworld, survived the blast from the portal's destruction)

In that case, I think I have mixed feelings about whether the movie should reveal the Truth behind the war (which according to the game storyline, isn't discovered until after the Second Rikti War).

Another interesting option might be to follow some minor heroes, like Horus from the Blue King comics, with a backdrop of the Big Dogs like Statesman, but not focusing on the big names too much. For bonus points, since any CoH movie would probably be developed by a CoH player, a movie in that vein could legitimately squeeze in a cameo from the director's/writer's character(s)

There is a movie that's in the process of being made. The producer is Tom DeSanto, the man behind the Transformers movies:

"In June 2007, it was announced that the producer for the Transformers film, Tom DeSanto, had acquired the option to make movies and television shows based on the City of Heroes franchise. In February 2008, it was announced that DeSanto has indeed begun preparations for the film. A plot summary has been released detailing that the movie itself takes place during the first Rikti War" - CoH Wikipedia Page

So far though, that's all that's known.

Don't get me wrong; I'd love to see a movie made out of my favorite game. But in the business world I've had many people pitch me ideas while asking for an investment in their brilliant, "can't miss" venture. They've often represented themselves as being much farther along than they really were. All I see here is a guy who bought the option, paid a writer to create a story outline, and is now shopping it looking for investors. For every story that gets greenlighted and funded, there are hundreds that get circulated and nothing ever happens. If DeSanto gets enough funding to begin production, then I'll consider it real.

Just imagine the influx of subscribers we'd get if a movie was ever made.
I seriously doubt it'll ever see the light of day but you never know when it comes to Hollywood.


I can only imagine what Atlas would look like once the buzz machine started up for COH: The movie.
Not so sure it'd be a good thing either...

Whoever the devs got to do the voice of Mender Silos in the official trailer should do the voice of Nemesis. He was great, and already established in the role
