There is a reason why there is no destruction physics in racing games that use the actual car models
... actually, I have several where there certainly is damage/destruction. The Need for Speed franchise in particular uses actual manufacturer cars - and as I'm recalling, does have damage toggle-able for the cars. (Or not toggle-able - here's one with just a bit of scraping from the fence for the heck of it.)

Part of the point of it, after all, is showing off cars most of us will never afford (I sure don't have a high end Lambo, Mclaren, etc. in my future.)
  2. Quick agreements to making Hide inherent, the placate bugs, etc. and hit point boost.

Have to chew through some of the rest. One I will address:
    Quote:
*Fix the "ambush bug:" When a player-targeted ambush spawns, it immediately knows where the Stalker is, and heads over to attack him, making Assassin's Strike and Hide pretty much useless, reducing the Stalker to a somewhat gimped Scrapper. Make a special exception for Stalkers where player-triggered ambushes head for the Stalker's last known position, instead of heading straight for the Stalker, or alternately make ambushes unable to attack stealthed players that they cannot see. We can't attack invisible things ("Target too hard to see"), so can't the AI be made to do the same?
Aside from not knowing if it's doable, I don't find this situation such a big deal (yes, I do play stalkers.) I might not get the AS (though, if it's something like a mayhem and I can duck through doors, I get a free shot anyway - target as soon as the door opening animation starts, AS will go off before the NPC can do anything,) but I can usually use terrain to break LOS, pick a target, and get a good, solid crit on them as the fight starts. Scrapping the rest, really, just isn't that big a deal IMHO, especially with the occasional placate. If you're solo, the ambush probably isn't that big. On a team, you've got others to help deal with it.

This severely hinders people who have characters they want to play that are isolated on the more inactive servers. What I would suggest instead is a single server that all players log into. In the event it becomes overloaded, it would become “full” an new server would become available, much like we do with the individual games zones when they become loaded. I realize there would have a number of challenges to implement this (AE might have to become its own zone for instance), but it would deeply enrich the CoH community as a whole, making us a true City of Heroes as a opposed to a "Multiple Dimensions of Cities of Heroes who can’t play together".

    Thoughts welcome of course.
You *assume* people "on the more inactive servers" are "Isolated." They are not. Some are there by choice because we don't LIKE the mess that is the Freedom server - and with Galaxy City going away in I21, one of the retorts to dealing with a broadcast full of PL spam ("Start in Galaxy") goes away. Not to mention you'd just give the RMTers - mostly isolated on Freedom - the entire game as their audience again.

Why server consolidation is not a good idea.

    1. Just because YOU like living in New York City doesn't mean I can't like Kansas.

Yay, you love having huge lag spikes as you get near the black market/wentworths and a busy broadcast. Congrats. Enjoy Freedom. Some of us - many of which you will get replies from with this subject - like *low population* servers. If we *wanted* to be on Freedom, we'd *be* on Freedom.

I have characters on Freedom. I rarely play them (and actually moved a character OFF of Freedom to finish leveling it to 50) because *I DON'T LIKE FREEDOM.* I dislike the banality of broadcast, the high percentage of *horrid* teams I've come across there, the lag around any gathering point- and I've got a decent connection and system. For much the same reason, I typically startin Galaxy City instead of Atlas Park - I don't *want* to log in to a costume contest with several 50s spamming powers and nonsense arguments in broadcast.

Some of us *like* nice, quiet servers.

    2, Kansas, part 2.

In addition, servers have their own personalities. No, I don't mean that literally, there's no AI to worry about if you start hearing "Daisy, Daisy" over your speakers or headset. Freedom's a crowded mess. Virtue is the RP server. Pinnacle is the "Drunk" server. Others have specific communities, such as those from Australia/NZ, Europe, etc.

    3. "I only saw one other person. World of Conancraft has eleventy billion!"

    So what?

We don't run around camping spawn points in this game. People are in missions. People are spread across many zones. Search on a map or do a /whoall and you'll miss those in missions, as well as those who are, for whatever reason, on /hide. Your "search" there didn't give you a full picture, not in the least.

I understand the "feel" of things being "not very populated," but take a good look around when you're in game. Typically, you don't really have a lot of visibility. Standing in steel canyon, there could be multiple, full 8 person groups surrounding you, and it's likely you'd never see them. We have buildings, walls, architecture, trees and more limiting our visibility. Yes, it can make you feel more alone... but that's rarely the case. Add to that that the population is spread between many, MANY zones, most quite large, and among two sides... well...

    4. "I put up my LFT flag and nothing happened!"

Learn to search. Don't just wait. Form a team yourself.

    5. "I AM SPARTACUS!" No, not any more.

Remember logging in and seeing all those slots? Everyone has those - some buy more than the base 12, you get an extra one each year, you could have a total of 36 on any server. Everyone does. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one.

Now merge servers. Suddenly, CoolBlasterDude from server 1 is getting merged with CoolBlasterDude from Server 2. Who gets to keep their name? Nobody has been able to answer this with any degree of satisfaction. Add a number? But I am NOT CoolBlasterGuy1. And what if the name's too long? Does the older character keep it? What if they're not as active?

People are *VERY* attached to their names. They are, quite obviously, part of their character.

    6. "This Is SPARTA!" Sorry, Sparta exists already. You are GenericSG 8734 287 9798.

What else has a name? Supergroups. And I can *guarandamntee* that the same name is in use on multiple servers. Sometimes it's 'branches' of the same SG, sometimes it's coincidence. But with *everything* involved in an SG - from its identity and reputation on the server, to everything stored in the database about what it owns, what its base is like and such, this would be a disaster in the making. And no, auto merging them when the servers merge, even if they have room to, is not an option.

This, of course, assumes that they *CAN* move supergroups as a unit. More than likely, it'd just be a mass character move, with bases, prestige, anything stored in bases and all SG affiliations just gone forever.

    7. "I am... where'd Spartacus go?"

Remember all those slots? Well, you start with 1/3 of the available ones. You can buy up to 36 total (24 on top of the ones you get initially.) Now, what do you suppose would happen if you merged two servers, and someone has, say, 20 characters on each? Not unusual. In fact, before those extra slots, I had *filled up* several servers. Do those characters just disappear? Do they move? Free move to another server sounds great, right... well, except you now kick them from their supergroup, remove them from their friends lists and more. This makes for angry and unhappy customers. Or rather, ex customers.

    8. I will play where I damn well want to. And you can too.

And that should be blunt enough. If I want a crowded server, I'll go to Freedom. If I want an RP server, I'll go to Virtue. I do NOT want to be shoved onto another server I *don't* like. If I wanted to go there, *I'd be there.*

If the server you're on isn't "busy" enough for you, you have two options that won't bother anyone else.
    (A) If it's low enough, reroll. You have a ton of character slots for a reason.
    (B) If you don't want to reroll, server transfers are available, and relatively cheap. They also finish fast - you should be up and running and being spammed to join someone's SG on the new server in a few minutes, in most instances. So YOU can go to the server of YOUR choice without screwing ME over.

    9. "It'll free up server hardware for Freedom!" No, no it won't.

Freedom, because of the load it tends to have, already has more resources dedicated to it than other servers. And ALL of the servers have been upgraded multiple times. The servers are not allocated exactly the same. The servers that handle less of a load have less dedicated to them. So this argument doesn't fly.

    10. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Last but not least (at least until better points come along to be added,) server consolidation is widely viewed in the industry as an MMO going on life support. No, we don't have WoWs numbers (and you should actually pay attention to when and how they got those.) They're an abberation in the MMO industry. COH has had and does have a very successful, sustainable population even at its lowest points, so there's no economic need to combine anything. The flip side of that, of course, has been suggested above - you crowd people together, break up their SGs and friends lists, cause characters to go missing and poeple definitely *will* quit, both out of annoyance and a sense of "The game is almost dead!"

    In conclusion....

As stated before, when it comes to server consolidation... HELL NO.
As always. I21, as a VIP, you'll be able to move your characters wherever you want, one a month, free. Not to mention such a "consolidation" would go against the new, VIP server they're introducing.

I've only seen one person really try a PVP Warshade (AlienOne, I think.) And that was pre-I13. Met up with him vs my Mastermind ... which, really, should have been a bad idea. Beat him a fair bit of the time (we weren't really doing more than trying to help him get a handle on dealing with masterminds, actually, and screwing around for the heck of it.) When he finally got the range/rhythm of "separate me far enough from my pets and go to town before they get to him," it would work... but he'd be hurting with the mires.

Other than that, yeah, I've had far more luck (PVP-side) with my Peacebringers for much the same reason - everything's self contained. Given the post-I13 "suppress when you so much as look at something funny" (and the suppression effect on Teleport - IE, bye bye travel power,) plus the gutting of controls... yeah, if there were any actual opponents to be found, my 'shades would likely not go into the zones much at all.

Answering the question with a question:

Have they lowered the price on the Party Pack? I sure haven't seen many people with it in game, and there was widespread agreement that it was far too expensive for what it gave.

As far as "The devs have changed numbers," saying they've changed (power) numbers is not the same as saying they've changed *prices.* Burn gaining or losing fear, for instance, did not cost me $5 either way - and once the store comes into the equation, there's *another* group of people (NCSoft's marketing/store folks) to deal with at the very least.

As someone who actually played the game, most of my 50s don't have it. I tend to *avoid* clockwork on the lower levels since it's a mass of end drain and just as not-fun as the mass of Mu redside.

So how about not assuming what someone who has played the game should or shouldn't have. Because they very well may have played the game differently from you.
  7. Not hard - fairly easy. And findign people through here, or DA itself (ThorsAssassin has a section on commissionable artists, and some I find via browsing) or just word of mouth.

Yeah, you want to make money a la carte - but being able to buy the whole shebang in one swoop - with discount - is still nice.

There's no "Or" there. Each villain is an individual - just like my heroes aren't 100% Stand By The Flag, Breeze Blowing, Cape Waving, Shiny Goody Two Shoes types, my villains aren't all, or even mostly, one thing or another.

    For instance, I've got:
    - Egotistical, basically "Rich Spoiled Daddy's Girl" who thinks it should all be hers.

    - Spirit that formed from the accumulated wars and hatred in a region of Africa and feeds from misery, creating his warriors from the spirits of the fallen.

    - Would-be ex-thief who tried to change and go straight, but had that taken away from her by Wyvern when they killed her fiance (who was a regular civilian,) and is more in a "Fine, if that's who I'm supposed to be, that's who I'll be" - she's resigned to it even if she doesn't like it.

    - A poorly programmed battlefield AI who's out for conquest and maintenance. Because those were the two things programmed into him most strongly.

    - Undercover hero

    - A version of my 50 elec/elec blaster (but an elec/elec brute in this case) that had lost someone thanks to yet another government project gone awry - and decided her world would not deal with that again, essentially conquering and ruling as empress until her world's version of the COT and some resistance managed to trick and forcibly exile her here. Furious, but her whole goal is to get back so her world doesn't fall apart again. (as she sees it.)

Basically, it's the character. Some would run Phipps arc happily. Some would run it and call him a wuss. Others would execute Phipps on the spot, or expose him to the world.

    To each his own.
Not sure why you're assuming the people pointing out that there is essentially no PVP and that the PVP rules have been badly broken since I13 are "PVEers" or "Bashing" PVP.

Or that there are "Just" PVEers and "Just" PVPers. Most of the people I met who were interested in the zones when they WERE active - and I mean *all* the zones, not just RV (which itself, sorry to say, is NOT all that active on most servers) - weren't "hardcore PVPers." They were interested enough casual PVPers to come into the zone and screw around, having good group fights for an hour or two, 8-12 vs 8-12 on a side.

I haven't seen that in years. And I wish I were exaggerating. Bloody Bay might as well be renamed Shivan-mart. Siren's Call, which used to be (IMHO) the most fun is flat out dead - I've had ONE person fight in the last year. I've seen perhaps three people - two of which, as soon as they saw a name in the "Bounty target" (meaning I was in zone) turned around and left. Warburg, the FFA zone? De nada. RV sees a little activity, but if I put all the people I've run across in RV in the last year together, I'd have a hard time starting most task forces.

And arenas? Don't make me laugh. They have never been all that busy. Perhaps you have scheduled events with a little group. I don't know. But other than starting a few myself with a friend or two, I've seen NO activity in those for a long time.

I WANT there to be people PVPing. I *Want* to be able to walk into Siren's again, grab a PUG assaulting the enemy and get epic fights going again. I *want* to be able to pop a blue and not get suppressed. And I don't mean "Just on Freedom," I want to be able to do this on Pinnacle, Victory, Infinity, EVERY server again. I *Want* to get those emails again saying people looked at my PVEers guide to PVP, decided to give it a try and loved it. So don't tell me I'm "bashing" or "Putting down" PVP by pointing out that, yes, it's pretty much dead. Even post-I13 I've tried getting people into it, encouraging those people who show up in zone that show the slightest interest. That doesn't happen very often at all.

PVP needs fixing and it needs more widespread interest.
  14. FFA itself, ok.

"Stay your level" - no. Name your time, take a level 1 and I'll meet you with a high level... and you tell me how much fun that was. (And I'm not even a *good* PVPer.) Even Bloody Bay is badly skewed (moreso now with the SSK "+5 level powers" ... meaning you could have a level 15 fighting a level 25 with level 30 powers, without taking slotting, sets, etc. into effect.) There are reasons for the level limits in the current zones. And have them call for help? To who?

In other words, there's the... putting it mildly, *un*popularity of PVP in this game. Historically, it just never really caught on. It was in its heyday pre-I13. Now that we have such massive differences in rules, the way powers react, etc.... yeah. There's almost no interest. I don't think a new FFA zone, even cross server if it were possible, would cure that.

Essentially, you'd have the badgers in in the first week or two to get whatever badges there are to get, and after that I'd expect it to be mostly dead.

I'd be much more behind this (with some tweaks) if PVP were more active and popular overall (and less broken) in this game.
  15. Do you mind building? (It's not that difficult.)

If you don't mind building, check any of FatherXmas's posts - he's got his $700 (I think) and $1200 or so builds in his sig, and he updates them constantly (probably in the first 1-2 pages of guides ATM.)

If you don't want to build... use those to piece together a system at ibuypower or cyberpower or the like.
  16. They're all physically in the same location, no longer east/west coast or europe.
  17. Well, after all the doom and gloom here and in closed/open beta about "oh my god, PBs are so underpowered, why did I ever make one when my warshade is purple and makes waffles too, I'm deleting my PB after 6 levels, whine, whine, whine" I can't say I find the "joke" all that amusing.

I don't think I've ever seen a forum that seems so dedicated to getting people NOT to play an AT. Even the Stalker forum is more positive. Which should say something.

  19. Echoing the "As an option" qualifier to not minding.

I wouldn't really call things much of a puzzle, though. I mean, to me, Portal is running puzzles to get to objectives. Even Defense Grid, a tower defense game if your'e not familiar with it, is more of a "puzzle" game than COH. There's the occasional timed challenge ("Get info and get out before reinforcements arrive, 5 minutes!") but that's about it.

And about the only downside to the suggestion is that with everything up - especially with four or more people - that's going to be an *awfully* crowded map if you have all NPCs - and sometimes even all glowies, including "decoys" - showing.

Living in FL, yeah, a surge protector is not enough. Undervoltage/drops can kill a PC as badly as a surge or spike can.

The *cheapest* UPSes tend to be battery backups, yeah - and you still run the risk of that drop just before they kick in. Good ones - to really simplify things - are essentially keeping the battery charged, with your PC (and everything else you put into the battery backup side of it) running "off the battery." (Again, REALLY simplistic explanation.)

Shouldn't really overspend - but IMHO they're 100% worth the money.
  21. Can only say a few things about ill/sonic:

    1. Made one. Felt playable once I finally got into the Ice APP. Ended up *hating* playing that character, quite honestly. (Got it to 50 because I was almost done with one of each control set to 50, and it was the farthest Illusion along. Then electric control came out. Arrrgh....)

    2. Yeah. END use is a pain. Cardiac sounds solid, can't say how Reactive would work - I haven't had the urge to really use mine in trials (which is a pity, because as a *character* I like her. As a pair of powersets, though...)

    3. Echoing the "You will be focusing on recharge." (Which is one of the things that drove me batty with it.) The few sets I have in her are there for recharge.

APP, I snagged everything BUT Ice Armor. I had no need for it - it was either feared, confused, held or attacking a pet. Or flopping around on a Liquefy patch. Or more than one of the above.

    Quote:
, I think Ice is a pretty good choice but you may want to consider Frost Breath instead of Ice Storm. Without an AoE Immob, it is hard to keep foes in the area of effect of the Storm.
... you'll be using Liquefy and flash to help with this. Neither is up *fast,* honestly.

I'd post a build, but really - I just couldn't bring myself to invest much in her. Like I said, loved as a *character,* even is one of my favourite bits of artwork - but hated playing the sets.

Tossing in a build, but I wouldn't go by it - like I said, didn't invest much. Maneuvers is there... actually, not sure why I picked maneuvers up at the time. (And ignore the one reactive. Think I threw it in because I had it but didn't have another resist crafted at the time.)

  22. [QUOTE=seebs;3827246]So, should I make an energy aura brute now?/QUOTE]

    Yes.

The people whining, to use your term, are paying far too much attention to numbers and not enough to playing the game, IMHO. As far as survivability, I rolled one up as my first villain on COV launch, was my first villain 50, on SOs, and I was still fairly survivable - if I wasn't the last one standing on a team, I was the last one to have gone down (or had done something like turned off a toggle before something exploded.) Though I generally also played like a "heavy stalker" (and got yelled at for being a "stalker" in PVP zones more often than not.)

Here's one of my characters. That purple puff? That's the blazing aura from another character. We're looking into the room where there should be the four pylons, two walkways, one large walkway and a portal.

Try and turn around in a good stretch of this map, and anything coming in from behind you is invisible. You can't see the corridor you came out of. (This isn't the best angle, admittedly - but you can see the wall of blackness behind.)

Here's one of the walkways as I'm walking down it. I've had the enemies, pylon and the rest of the walkway not appear until I'm almost off the 'platform.'

And there's a shadow shard instanced map that does much the same thing. Little hard to see at the size, but it's rather hard to target NPCs that vanish - and I've had NPCs who are already brain dead about following get lost because of it.

THAT's what I've been seeing for years, over multiple systems, AMD and nVidia cards, XP and Win7.
