  1. Don't care either way - I want to say they had it where it was possible to purchase common salvage in closed beta for a bit and removed it, but my recollection may be inaccurate there.

If someone else *does* remember that, I'd say that could be taken as proof that the idea, at least near-term, has been considered and rejected already. If someone else doesn't, I'd say that could be taken as proof that my memory is faulty on the matter.

    Of course, with:

Is it really that bad if people generate 60 alchemical silvers at 15 a pop than instead of ~19 alchemical silvers and 93 other pieces of common salvage at 8 a pop?

    [/ QUOTE ]

... well... they were, as I recall, hoping to minimize impact on the market, so I'd have to say that yes, it would be "worse" overall. The 93 (let's assume you use some, store a bit, and dump the rest - 65 sound fair?) pieces you wouldn't use would be what would help feed the market.
  2. There needs to be a badge for earning badges about badges earned!

<-- doesn't bother me either way. No idea what I have, badge wise, on any character.

    1. Gotta make sure the pvp chars don't count towards H/V EATs

    [/ QUOTE ]

Yeah, I was somewhat assuming that. Then again, if it were flagged as a PVP-only EAT, would it be a big issue? It'd still have all the other restrictions, after all, being flagged PVP-only. It certainly wouldn't count for the PVE version, though, no.

    [ QUOTE ]

    3. Only SO builds would make things more balanced, but possibly unlimited Free-IOs (abiding to the slotting rules, of course) would allow for different ways of play, and allow players who know how to slot a character well can have a slight advantage, because after all they spent the time to number crunch everything together, instead of a generic SO slotting. Other play styles from IOs like a proc-tastic build or fast and lighter on end but less powerful, or slow, defensive and powerful, bonuses from IOs.

    [/ QUOTE ]

The IO build mentioned (select, can't unslot but can change, cant' trade, etc.) would not lock you ONLY into common IOs (or SOs, depending on what the strength would be.) They'd be there for starters, so you wouldn't have a completely unslotted 50 with the disadvantage of - well, not having played and gotten INF/recipes/etc. If you get, trade, or otherwise obtain set recipes, you're completely free to use them (and they, as regular IOs, would be usnlottable/tradeable/etc.)

I specified that setup specifically because of PVP IO recipes. It'd be silly for a PVP-only character not to be able to use PVP-dropped rewards, after all.

    [ QUOTE ]

    4. Instead of putting all that consignment house and trainer and what-not in the zones, how bout a much smaller base portal to a PvP Char only "Base" zone with all that stuff. Perhaps instead of a consignment house there should be a special store with things only PvP Chars would need, like costume recipes, and temp powers, perhaps even special pvp powers, like a normal ranged attack for melee people, or a temp mez protection for ranged ATs, or even TP protection, cause now not even EA or ELA will protect from that.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Well, part of the reason for putting all that stuff in (the trainer, CH, etc.) was also as a QOL change for everyone in the zone. Non-PVP-only characters can, after all, still level, and they may not want to leave a good fight for a haul over to a trainer and back.

CH access, though, I could see being put into an actual "safe" spot for a PVP-Only character. It can take some time, after all, and they don't have the option of leaving and going to a regular CH.

It would also give them access to the regular recipes you mention above, if they don't drop (costumes, temp powers, etc.) I won't go into temporary PVP powers, as that's a whole other kettle of fish.

the Snare one drives me nuts. It seems almost misanthropic to slap a whole new term on something that has been known as "Immobilize" from day 1. Was this some disgruntled employee's subtle last laugh on his last day of work?

[/ QUOTE ]Snare is actually another name for slow, not immobilize. :x Immob is only immob.

    [/ QUOTE ]

*nod* I just looked at what I typed and said a snare sounds like an immob, but "it's a snare." I was thinking "it's a slow," really... apparently the brain-fingers-keyboard path hit a snare. Or a slow. Maybe an immob. Or a confuse.
  5. It's been brought up before, as well.

And not just that, as far as consistency. Go look up... I believe it's Positron's Blast. Find a bunch of recipes? See any enhancements?

Why are there no enhancements? Because the enhancements get made as Positrons Blast. No apostrophe. (I believe it's Posi's.) Similarly, some sets will list the recipe as Acc/Dam with the resulting IO as Accuracy/Damage, or even more fun, Damage/Accuracy.

It's not EVERY set, IO, or enhancement - but there are quite a few. Is "Snare" a slow or an immobilize? I mean, if something's snared, it can't move, right, so it sounds like an immobilize... but it's a snare. Disorient and Stunned are another example. Same thing, different name.

I agree, getting some people just in to change all of this - purely text, as it doesn't (ok, shouldn't, but who knows...) affect powers - would be very nice.

Hey, hire some temps to locate them all, come up with what they should read, and let them submit the changes to review. Heck, I'd do it if I could work remotely. >.>
  6. [ QUOTE ]

As it stands, if the vast majority of people are playing AE, then you almost have to play AE also, to be able to buy enhancements..

    [/ QUOTE ]

    ... really?

What are those funny "recipe" and "salvage" things that keep dropping on my characters, then? Not to mention the enhancements themselves?
  7. [ QUOTE ]
The suggestion as written would only be appealing to me if the characters were automatically awarded all accolades, or provided with an alternative method to obtain them. (This includes Day Job Accolades, although providing an alternative means to obtain them seems more straightforward.)

I also would be wary of implementations for "PvP Merits." My immediate fear is that they'd be dropped only for PvP kills, and that heavily disadvantages new characters created this way.

One thing that would probably have to go in for this that I'd really like, however, is the ability to run PvP Zone Missions according to your combat level rather than your security level.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Your second paragraph takes care of the first, perhaps.

As far as how they'd drop? Good question. Yes, kills would (IMHO) have to be part of it - but since they don't get TF merits, arc merits, etc. perhaps a PVP-only-flagged character would get them for X many missions, a chance from the NPCs in zone and the like. How many for each, and how much the various rewards would be.... I'm not even going to speculate. I'll leave that to those that love playing with numbers.

... which somewhat feeds into the third point. Since these characters play only in PVP zones, and would be directly affected by the buffs/debuffs from the missions, they should be able to run them regardless of being "50."

In some ways, they'd be like GM-coded NPCs are. Somewhat.
  8. This came to mind again during a discussion of the AE farms.

It's been suggested before that we have available a (Guild Wars-style, for instance) ability to roll an "PVP flagged" character. I thought I'd take a crack at laying out not just the characters, but everything around them to support such a character.

    What this is not:
This is NOT a character that can go anywhere and PVP - no stalkers in Atlas park.

    What this is:
On character creation, you get an instant level 50 character that is only usable in PVP zones, the Arena, and the base (for when base raids are available again, as well as for storage and potential build items.) It cannot exit a PVP area, except to go to another PVP area.

    Why do it:

Partially to encourage PVP, partially to take some of the wind out of power leveling, both as far as cutting back the RMT market and the various broadcast spam.

A PVPer who didn't have to do anything but roll a PVP-dedicated 50 could do so immediately to try out new builds or build ideas, get a "needed" character (more support? More damage? Go roll one!) for a team or the like.

Someone new to PVP wouldn't have to worry (well, as much - see detail bits for a discussion of enhancements) about being too far behind the curve, or being at the bottom end of the range of a zone. If they want to try PVP but don't feel their character is up to snuff, they can just create a new one (with no "attachment" to it) and if they don't like it - delete it when they're done. This could get some people who are on the fence interested in actually trying PVP.

    Why not:

There's a good bit of work behind it. No illusions there. However, some of the additions would benefit everyone.

    Detail bits:

The characters would be able to earn infamy and prestige. NPCs in the zones would still drop enhancements, recipes, salvage and the like. They obviously wouldn't get XP, being level 50. All exemping and similar rules would still apply to them.

When you get the character, you level 1-50 just like you normally would. There's an added step, however, where you assign enhancements. These are not "real" enhancements - while they can be changed, they cannot be removed, sold, or traded. They CAN be replaced with real enhancements, including set IOs. These enhancements would be about level 40-45 common IO strength, to give a reasonable amount while in RV and to deal with the effects of exemping down.

Also, they'll have their own "special" merits. Yes, I know, another "money system," but unlike bounty, this doesn't decay or go away. It's here solely to make up for the fact they won't be getting reward or MA merits, or be able to run respec trials if they want to make a little "tweak" here or there without a complete reroll. To some extent, the rewards would have to be "PVP character only" to cut down possible exploitation holes - but having the rewards (if they were, say, SF/TF level recipes as well as respecs) tradeable between similarly flagged characters I don't think would be a bad idea or affect the market much. They should be noticably different (say, if it's an IO, where a normal IO has the silver border, this one would be deep red, yellow, or a noticably different color.)

Support work that would have to be done:

Obviously there needs to be some support system behind this. You can't respec (past a freespec) if you couldn't exit the zone. In fact, you couldn't get to a trainer to swap builds. So, what to do:

    (1) Arena kiosks in every PVP zone.

Why this hasn't been done as it is, I don't know. I think it's been asked for forever.

    (2) Trainers in zone.

You can, after all, level in a PVP zone. Being able to train without losing bounty, shards, codes or temporal points would be nice for everyone. It would also allow the insta-50 PVP-flagged character to swap builds, as that option is only available at the trainer.

    (2a) - Trainers in base.

Yes, you lose bounty, etc. by going to the base, but it'd be available to everyone. Not as optimal for this character type as (2) but helpful for everyone. I'd go for both.

    (3) Consignment house access in zone/base.

Because, yes, they should be able to make INF by sellign what they don't want, while buying what they do. This would, short of RV, be their only access to purples for instance. (Short of trading and such, which is not disallowed.)

    (4) Obviously, all the flagging and PVP-character-only related systems.

I'm not saying this wouldnt' be a good chunk of work to do, but I think with all this behind it, it may be workable, as well as help encourage PVP in general.
  9. For the OP, I think INF/Prestige gain is the least of anyone's worries about the MA. It's the "1-50 in 8 hours or less!" farms that are the biggest issue.

What I actually think we'll see:

Temporary removal of Comm Officers and similar mobs, to be replaced with lower-yield mobs (in all rewards.)

Reduction of rewards for "common" custom mobs (minion-lt-boss perhaps.) Same reason.

Tweaking attack capabilites on those mobs.

Any sort of check ("Must have X missions," "Must have X type of goals," etc.) can be gamed. The adjustments will, most likely, be done to the mobs themselves.

I saw "Jack's dancing, that looks so wrong" a couple of times but didn't make it in time for the screenshot.

Yeah, that was a hoot. I missed getting screenies, though....too busy trying to dodge the multiple everythings. I mean, one GW is rough....but 4-5? At once? Along with several LRs? And more Makos?

  11. Not particularly for this - For the reasons mentioned, yes, as well as for having a draw to do actual "official" content at high levels. Yeah, I know, it gets farmed too, but still.

I'd just like to point out that this really isn't a valid argument. Don't get me wrong, I think preventing people from creating characters on any server they want is a horrible idea.

But say Freedom was locked out. Why couldn't the Vet player simply, god forbid, play with his buddy on a different server?

They could easily team together doing regular content, or if the Vet wants to help his friend level real fast they can go play in the MA.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I really need to update this with some other stuff, but it was initially written for 2xp weekends.

    [ QUOTE ]

How to start on another server - or, Double XP Weekend Can't Bring Me Down!

Yes, another Double XP weekend has come and (almost) gone. Characters were made, others were levelled, and a good time was had by all!

Well, perhaps not by all. There's a vocal minority, most of whom come from Freedom (by dint of it being the most populated server) who insist the weekend was ruined for them, that they couldn't play, that NCSoft owes them something or other for this.

Let's get the hardnose stuff out of the way here.
I'll get helpful later, but this does need to be said:

If you put all your eggs in one basket, it's your own fault you couldn't play. And as far as NCSoft owing anything? Read your EULA.

NC Interactive cannot guarantee that you will be able to access the Service or your Account whenever you may wish to do so.

NC Interactive shall not be liable for any interruption of the Service, delay or failure to perform resulting from any causes whatsoever.

What does that mean? The servers - ALL of them - can be down, and your option will be to wait 'til they fix it.

    But that doesn't help me!

You're right. It doesn't. But the rest of this will.

First, I fully understand being annoyed by not being able to play your favourite character. Really, I do. I fully understand having a main character on a main server. From what other denizens of Freedom tell me though... they can get on with just a few tries. Backing out and going back in lets them in.

Also - this isn't just about double XP weekend. Servers are hardware, software, and all that connects them. They can have problems. They're split to cover two coasts, and we've had half the servers be unavailable due to data center or network issues.

Wouldn't you like to be able to play regardless?

But I dont' want to move to another server!

Let's get a few arguments and misconceptions out of the way here first.

I don't want to spend ten bucks on a transfer!

While you can do this, it isn't what I'm suggesting. You CAN do this as part of the process, but setting up a character on another server costs absolutely nothing more than you pay right now.

All my friends/my SG/etc are on Freedom!

So bring them with you. And make new friends at the destination, too!

    (Server) is a ghost town!

Didn't you just say you had friends and an SG? If they come over with you, you're not starting with a so-called "ghost town," as incorrect as the idea *is.*

    My main is on Freedom!

That's fine. This is giving you the ability to play and meet new people if you can't get on freedom. Enjoying the game you're paying a subscription fee to play. To have fun. Isn't that the point?

I don't want to do this for a character that'll be played only three times a year!

That's an assumption - and it's something you can control, anyway. Read on.

    Making the move

OK. The important thing - how do you make this move? Here's a bunch of ideas for you.

First, pick a server. Talk it over with your friends and SG mates. Importantly, you want a west coast server. From experience around the country, you won't notice a difference playing - I've played East coast servers from Oregon, and West coast from the midwest and south. You wont' notice a difference.

Freedom is an East Coast server. Why is this important? Well, I mentioned earlier that the servers are split into two data centers. Every once in a while, a center has trouble - so multiple servers are unavailable. If you look at the Wiki, you'll see which servers are where.

What you want to consider is a west coast server. Those are:
    Champion
    Guardian
    Justice
    Protector
    Virtue

    Pick one!

Now, you've picked a server. We'll use Champion for our example. What now?

Well, now you have to create characters and a supergroup. Yes, you're starting over (unless someone pays ten bucks to move a character witha bunch of INF over, or risks market transfers.) Say you've convinced six people to come with you. What do you do to avoid having ignored lowbies?

    Create an event!

Redside? How about Mastermind Mania. Every, say, second Sunday, get on your masterminds on Champion and just play for an hour. Team, obviously! And don't forget supergroup mode. You want a base! Or be the Sunday Scourge. Maybe the fourth Saturday you run Blasters, blowing up everything in sight. How about Task or Strike Force Fridays? Or even just farming?

Guess what. Soon... you'll have some decently levelled characters, a supergroup base, and the core of a new group which you can play any time Freedom's not available.

And if you think the folks you came with are only going to play those? Think again. Someone's going to say "Y'know, we could use a corruptor," and roll one, then have it invited to the group. Or a dom. Or a defender.

    In addition... *Mention your event!*

You're on the forum RIGHT NOW reading this. If you go down the lsit of forums a ways, you'll see *server forums.* Pop into the server you chose and say "Hey, we've got a new group, and we run X event on this specific day. Come join us - roll a new character, if you want!"

While you're at it - *tell people in game, too!* So you're down to four one week? Broadcast. "The Exiled Freedom group (I don't know if it exists, if it's yours, pardon the borrow) is running Mastermind Madness this week. Want in? We've got Sk spots!" Meet new people and grow your group!

Some folks, if they know you're trying to just start a "backup" group or a new SG, will probably help out in other ways, too. While farming is generally frowned on by the community, farming to get a new SG off the ground *can* be a way to meet new people who are willing to help.

    After a while?

You have a new supergroup. A secondary "main," perhaps. New people on the friends list. And next time Freedom's not available, you have a place to invite your friends who are now stuck there, helpign them level up a new character and enjoy the time.

And isn't that what it's all about?

Disneyworld in Orlando hires people dirt cheap. I mean not even $10 an hour. They do house and feed alot of students though. The point is for such meanial pay the cig sweeper has incredible patience. He's asked on average 63 times a day where Space Mountain is. Every single time he answers politely with the directions. Thats not a patience thru great character, but simply knowing each person really doesnt know.

"no." "So it's called Space Monkey?" "No, mountain." "So where is it again?" - well, they WILL get irritated. And they will find a way to pawn the person off on someone else.

Nobody here (aside from the rednames) is paid to put up with anyone else. And yet, despite that, I (and others) have created guides and, yes, extensive cut-and-paste answers that give you detailed information not only on the topic but on forum related information like using the search feature. Information which, from your own replies in this thread, you've willfully chosen to remain ignorant of or dismiss.

63 people come in and post a "Merge the servers" thread in the next month? They'll get 63 copies of the same cut and paste reply so they have the same information, delivered neutrally and at no charge. Choose to ignore it or dismiss it, expect irritation.

  19. Picture the scene, as it stands right now:

A longbow warehouse, random longbow standing around guarding or whatever it is that they do when they're standing there. Jill, the Longbow Flamethrower, is talking to Mchelle, the strangely bald Longbow Nullifier, just a few feet from their next "guard" group....

"Hey Jill. Half an hour 'til lunch."
"Uh huh. I hear we just got in some fresh Longbow Lemonade."
"Do they have to brand everything?"
"I know - hey, what's that sword doing sticking out of Jim's chest?" (Jim being 20 feet away, having just been ASd by a Stalker, who's now visible.)
"Oh, he's such a kidder. Bet he'll lay there on the ground. Slacker - see, what'd I tell you?"
"Who's that guy with the bloody sword?"
"Probably his relief. Don't know why Steve's hitting him. So, see any good movies lately?"

Seriously, aggro in this game, especially dealing with small groups (solo/small team sized spawns) is nonsensical. Sure, sometimes the other group a few feet away will aggro. More often than not, they'll just stand there. Aggroing another group on my Stalkers is rarely a worry - a patrol, sure. But I'm also rarely wanting to pull anyone.

That said, there are two things to keep in mind if you *do* want to -
    1. Some sets have range. A Focus or Impale will do wonders.
    2. If you don't have such a power, you still have your origin power if proximity to another group is a worry. Yes, it unhides you, I know - personally, I build my stalkers to be able to scrap, since I have no guarantee of clean getaways.
    3. You can already shed aggro with placate. Some sets have additional tools, as well. And if you're on a team - use what the team has to offer.

I guess I just don't personally see a need. *shrug*

  22. Well, you do have dual builds. If it's something you want to play around with when solo, use your second build to do it.

Personally, I think it'd be rather painful and somewhat ineffective. But that's purely opinion. You mention, for instance, Nin/Poison, and ask if you'd be close to a defender. The answer: No, you'd be worse.

Your buffs/debuffs wouldn't be as effective as a Defender (or Corruptor, if we had Poison corruptors.)

Your attacks - you'd have far fewer. Snap shot, Aimed shot, and the multishot... that's three. You're now equal to a leve four Defender, as far as number and availability of attacks. You're still squishy, you have no bodyguard mode to make you less squishy, you have no inherent for all intents and purposes, you have no further attacks coming (that's three powers, three pets you're not taking, two upgrades you're not taking, and Smoke bomb which you're... not taking.) Yes, it's now easier to fit in stamina, leadership, travel powers and... um... something else (since, as /poison, you'd skip Poison trap most likely,) but you're not getting anywhere near as much mileage out of them.

If it's about wanting to use a bow - push for Archery to be ported to Corruptors.

Like I said, if you *really* want to do it - do it as a second build. At worst, you'll have to wait 15 minutes between switching to get pets back. And if you DO do it, warn teams so they know what to expect.

Heh. Not a problem. I was actually updating my little cut/paste thing, and it seems we're thinking along the same lines. I've been spending some time updating that cut/paste bit, and added this...

    Further discussion

This I think merits a bit of extra commentary, honestly.

"Vehicles" covers a lot of different ground for different people. Some only consider cars/jets/motorcycles vehicles. Others add jetpacks, wings and the like. Much of the above considers cars and similar sized vehicles, with nods to motorcycle type vehicles.

Jetpacks and such, I don't see happening as travel powers. As costume options for Flight? Or as invented pieces that interact with Fly, similar to wings? Absolutely - but they don't need to be a separate travel power for that. I'm all for more jetpack and wing (or combination) designs. Besides, there are so many "temp" jetpacks, I don't see introducing yet another one as really being feasable - just my opinion.

But vehicles - cars, specifically - as a travel power, have issues.

One way to have them "somewhat" work.

For all that, I know some people *would* still like to pull up in front of a mission. So how do we do it?

A temporary power, based on the same tech from the Mac/Valkyrie pack Mission Teleporter. The temporary power would:

    (a) be an invention - dropping from enemies. (A reward, because you saved... well, we'll get to that,)

    (b) be a single use each time - you can only hold one at a time, not one of each, one total.

    (c) use rarely used salvage, because... it's rarely used, and cheap. No Luck Charms here.

    (d) come in multiple varieties.

How does this get around the various issues?

<ul type="square">[*]Terrain - It doesn't pass terrain. It just arrives.[*]It follows the same 'rules' as the mission teleporter - it's not indoors, doesn't go to contacts, etc. Just mission doors. [*]Customizing - It's not "your" vehicle. It's a temp power. You've called a cab, limo, or other transport.[*]Power animation - since you're skipping the space in between, no powers can be used 'til you arrive anyway. [/list]
    The varieties?
    - Limo: Stereotypical slightly stretched black limo.
    - Checker cab: The classic yellow cab.
    - Alien "drop pod" thing. Just for giggles.
    - Burrower - Think mole machine, but not quite.

Now, part of the issue with these are still animating your character getting in or out. How do we deal with these?

In: Who cares. You teleport away. We copy the Mission Teleporter power. Not as "cool," but less intensive to work on. And you can use it to leave from inside the mission, SG base, Pocket D or wherever. It's an MMORPg. RP that you called a cab.

    Exiting: You don't get animated.
    - Limo: Pulls up. NPC driver gets out, opens door, flashes (or just bright light) from inside (think papparazi or some such.) You appear.
    - Cab: It's an old cab. It pulls up in a cloud of exhaust when it stops. When the exhaust cloud clears, you're there.
    - Alien drop pod - *Plop* - Steam - It dissolves, you're there.
    - Burrower - Pops "out of the ground," releases steam, you're there and it's back underground.
