  1. I'm not sure I'd want a global channel increase - what I'd actually like to see are "Server channels" in a group of their own. So things like, say, Pinnacle Monsters, Virtue TFs, etc. can be "global" solely to that server, freeing up actual global channel slots for other things.

The type of channel does exist - [Admin] I believe uses it, and I want to say [Arena] does as well.

Kill two birds with one stone I don't care about Guardian ship raid coordination or Infinity monsters when I'm on Champion, f'rinstance.

People aren't complaining about Empaths. They're complaining about "Healers." From the description, you aren't one - using buffs and keeping them up, taking advantage of the debuffs of the secondary, attacking in general - that's an Empathy Defender.

The net effect would be nothing while the toggle is on, and some time between shutting the toggle off and 0.5s after shutting the toggle off, you'd get +20% def for somewhere between 119.5s and 120s.

This is similar to the way enhancements in Hover are made useful. Hover has -flyspeed which is unaffected by enhancements, and +flyspeed which is affected by enhancements. Since the +flyspeed is a larger value, enhancements do more to your actual speed than would normally be expected.
Somewhat tangental - the way Quantum Flight used to work. (Initially - instant phase with max flyspeed. Then they added a slowly increasing END cost after X amount of time, before going to the current "phase is off after 30 sec.")

They can do some interesting things with toggles.

But, as mentioned - you'll find a whole range out there, both on and off virtue. I've seen people get thoroughly annoyed that you ((don't put your OC stuff in parenthesis)) even when answering a question in broadcast, I've seen people who don't care and go with the flow (if the team's RPing, they do too, if not, they just go with it.) I'll tend to slip in and out of it depending on what's going on, but what I'm saying should give a clue ("Ow. I think I broke something" is definitely in character, "anyone have another red" obviously isn't, and most people seem to be able to track pretty well.)

And of course, some people think RP stands for ripe pears, and wonder what you're on about, they just want to shoot stuff.

This has been brought up several times. For me, even though it's newer, redside is an absolute bore, moreso than blueside - if nothing else from being able to get a change of scenery blueside. Kalinda/Mongoose or Burke/Gheed, newspaper, V/H/B, etc, over and over again - ugh. But both sides could use a freshening up.

Heck, we have MA. Have the devs get some player involvement to write new storyarcs. Three month timeframe, winners become official arcs (credited, perhaps a 3-6mo. free time thrown in) - international legalities might be the biggest issue there. Of course, there are lowbie starter arcs in there already.

But yeah. Some freshening up there would be nice.

*notes a bit of a disconnect*

Er - ok. Looks like I'm doing a bit of explaining.

First bit - I have no idea why Arctic_Princess mentioned RV, given it is a PVP zone, and I'm not trying to put words in AP's mouth. I'll let AP do any explaining there if needed.

Second - the "look what you quoted" was referring to you quoting me, not your reply to AP.

And third, with the quote that started this chain, I was poking at the lack of interest in PVP in this game by saying PVP was not a concern in naming RV, which is obviously a PVP zone.

  8. I've... got to say I'm still not fond of the idea.

Yes, it's better than having the pieces give you something. No, I don't want to be penalized in some way (even if it's "less effectiveness") for wearing the "wrong" costume. And the +Prestige? ... "Must be in SG mode, costumes must have the +Prestige enhancement or you'll be kicked." Bad enough some are prestige farms now...

I get the idea behind it. Honestly, I do. I just haven't seen anything that makes me think changing from the "Costumes are purely cosmetic" model is a good idea yet.

    alas....

No, Every AT and set in the game has no "one right way" to build. The difference is the players of the other AT's are thick skinned enough to be able to admit some specific combinations of powers and slotting will in almost all cases work better than other less optimal choices.

The Kheldian AT's have alot more choices and options, thus making it "harder" to pin down a "one right way" to build (which doesnt really exist in any of the AT's anyways) but not impossible by any means. it's simply unpleasant for some to even think that their masterpiece of kheldian design might not be as good as it could possibly be.

don't get me wrong Justaris is totaly on the ball with his advice, i simply cannot agree that doubling or even trippling the choices alllowed makes finding a half dozen optimum builds impossible to determine...harder yes...impossible...no.

Sorry for the derailment, and again excellent advice was given.
Heh. I think the big thing here is that there *are* so many options and so many ways to go. IOs made it even more complicated than for the other ATs and powersets, I think, since we can use so many of them and have so many targets we can aim for.

Personal bias, here - I wish, when people asked for "a build," they were given a good, solid SO build (with whatever preferences they have - "I'd like a snipe" in a blaster set, for instance.) If they ask for "I'd like defense," "I'd like permadom," "I'd like to have as many Extractions out as possible," then the build can be tweaked for IOs. Instead, we tend to see "Here, have a multi-billion inf IO build" thrown out there (as a general statement, and across all ATs.)

Derailments can be interesting, too. >.>

Not necessarily. Some areas, at least, if you drive around you'll see signs about (say) "State prisoners working." I don't think they're exactly doing so willingly (they wouldn't be there cleaning up garbage or whatnot "just because," most likely) though given the choice between that and "sit in your cell," well... Paying off a debt, essentially, could also be construed as "serving unwillingly" without it being slavery.

Try to think through your own arguments. Oh, a hint - read prior statements about "people playing on multiple servers." I don't pay a Virtue sub, a Victory sub, etc. I pay for a subscription (multiple, actually) to City of Heroes.

I don't personally care one way or the other if you like to play with no one around or 1000 people watching you constantly. What I'm bothered by is people acting (or even saying) it is their right in this game to play on a low population server. For those people I'd like them to think about just one thing. They haven't consolidated servers as a result of low numbers, this much is true. But they also wouldn't expand the number of servers if by some miracle numbers grew considerably. That should spell out exactly where those "rights" sit.
Unsurprisingly, you ignore the fact that hardware can be added to handle larger populations. (The developers, for instance, have told us that Freedom has more hardware dedicated to it.) Your "point" proves exactly nothing. (Of course, given it's your strawman, it's not meant to.) They would not need to add a twelfth through twentieth server. Just give the existing servers additional hardware to handle this (say) extra 200,000 people that suddenly showed up.

Tabula Rasa didn't turn a profit. It was a huge money LOSS for NCSoft. THAT is what killed it. Not just a "population drop," but never gaining and sustaining the population to make back the *massive* investment NCSoft put in (due in no small part, I'm sure, to Richard Garriot's name.)

COH, on the other hand, HAS managed to return its investment, and be profitable and sustainable enough for NCSoft to buy the IP, hire the majority of the dev team, provide new offices, hire more people and generally *re*invest.

Saying "Tabula Rasa's servers were busier" (and having played it, honestly we're talking "visibly busier," as it had the typical-MMO, everyone run outside to the same spawn points to fight over the same spawns design that's a staple of all but a few MMOs... that few including COH) ignores everything else that went wrong with it. Fun game? Sure, sort of. But its population had an initial spike and such a massive, immediate downward fall that it had no hope of ever paying back NCSoft's investment. Thus, it died - not from server populations, but business realities.
    Quote:
If I were on a smaller server, however, I'd be concerned about shrinking populations and what this might mean to the bean counters at corporate.
See above. (For another example of visible population not mattering here where it matters elsewhere, see Aion. It's an open world PVP game, barring a few zones, and its population drop has led NC to decide to merge servers - and the initial interest I had in dusting off my characters there and playing has fizzled because of it.) COH, not being an open-world PVP game (and PVP itself never being a huge draw even at its peak) wouldn't have that issue to worry about. COH's playstyle and profitability are in a place that, no, server merges aren't needed.

What would the bean counters see? "Initial investment - paid back. Profitable, yes. Profitable for the next fiscal year with current subs and trends? Yep. Next?"

I play on Virtue, so any decision the devs make isn't likely to impact me terribly much (which does kinda blow the "they'll anger existing players who will leave the game in droves!" theory out of the water: if only the lowest pop servers are merged, the casualties should be minimal).
For someone who apparently likes calling out "logical fallacies," you make quite a few yourself. How many people play *only* on one server? Especially in a game that caters so heavily towards alts? A fair number I run across have people on multiple servers. Get them (and, I'll say, me) irritated enough to leave, and guess what - they're leaving your *large* server too. (I do have characters I play on Virtue, for instance, including a villainous version of my forum-namesake. I leave, the loss of my accounts is not just affecting Victory and Pinnacle. It's affecting every server - since I have characters on, and play on, every server, though I tend to avoid Freedom because I find the teaming experiences and "community" there unpleasant.)

Agreed. Of course nothing other than your last point explains why someone would feel increased degrees of emptiness compared to the past as those features have been in play for years in most cases. Additionally since inventions the chances of seeing people traveling in zone (at least near the associated hubs) has increased on paper and should counteract many of the causes of emptiness. At the very least people playing in vig/rogue status will add some warm bodies to the available pool. Other than that, hopefully another round of free transfers will satisfy the remaining people that missed the first wave of musical chairs. Assuming of course they open up the option 2-4 months after GR launches, which I'm hopeful they will.

I would appreciate you NOT going through and altering things, attributing it to me without admitting you EDITED it (much like I did via altering the name in the nested quote, or will do with formatting or a "Fixed" comment, generally with explanation.)

My already low personal opinion of you has shot down even farther, for presenting that as dishonestly as you did. "My" last point as you put it there was certainly not mine, as anyone can see from the original quote, and yet you add it and then say it's mine? I'll not have someone skim through and see that misrepresentation as the fact of what I said.

Since you wish to be immature and call that my quote, let me put this a way you may be able to understand. "Liar, liar, pants on fire."

Now, as far as lowest subs - here, let me put it at your level again - "Duh." It's a six year old (and change) game. MMOs tend to go through a population bleed - either rapidly, a la Tabula Rasa, or slowly - like us. That said, I'm still running into new people with regularity (and they don't seem to be having all too many issues with "where is everyone," understanding instancing and getting teams,) on top of our various cycles and subscription rises and dips (time of year, resubbing for new features, playing, then going to another game.)

As far as your later, foolish "Force new players post-GR to start in Praetoria?" Yes, the zone shows off the latest tech, assuming the new player's system can handle ultra mode. But this is a game about choices. You can *choose* archetypes and a wide variety of powersets instead of being pigeonholed into narrow playstyles. You can choose to go nuts with costumes or stay in the first one. You can choose to PVP or ignore it completely. You can choose to IO out a character to the gills or run solely on SOs. Removing a choice - especially, by the way, when EATs must start in their "native" zones - goes against all that. If I *want* to start out as a villain, I should have that - here's that word again - choice. If I know my character's heroic from the top of his head to the tips of his pointy boots, I shouldn't have to start in a "grey" area. I should be able to head to Atlas or Galaxy - whether on my multi-year-old accounts or a brand new, five minute old one - and spout off heroic cliches and be an overgrown boy scout from XP 0 on up.

APB and our timers come to mind.

We've already got items ("get information from computer," etc.) that have an interruptable timer to perform an action. Over in APB, you have actions (raid, break in, mug, etc.) that also have timers (that can be interrupted.)

    Apply them to more places.

    - Villainside - mug. Simply because heroside, you can get INF for rescuing people getting beat up/purses snatched/etc. Not a LOT, but still. Villainside, they just run.

    - Take Hostage / Arrest X - if you can manage to get them without getting interrupted, no reinforcements show up. Otherwise, their cries alert everyone.

    - Interrogate. If you don't kill a boss (say) right away and start to "interrogate" when they're under, oh, 20% health, if you're not interrupted - get a tip. (Not neccessarily the next issue's Tips from the announcement, but something building to a mission/arc related to the group.)

That contributes quite a bit to the "emptiness," as you don't see everyone going to kill the same 100 bats to get 7 Bat Nostril Hairs to turn into Bat Control Girl to progress on your quest to get to the Dragon of Diarrhea and end the flow of reinforcements besieging Tolkeintown etc etc etc. Of course, the instancing of everything also means you don't have to stand in line to be Team 27 waiting to kill Boss #174 or rescue Hostage 18 from the Cage of Cinnabons or whatever.

I play on every server. My opinion on my Freedom experiences is easy enough to figure out when you see those are my *least* played characters. I transferred characters *from* Freedom during the free transfers. Freedom contains most of my worst teaming experiences. I play most heavily on Victory and Pinnacle, not high-pop servers, and don't have issues getting teams as desired. Of course, I also don't insist that "team" has to equal "6-8 people of the perfect AT mix," either, since pretty much *any* mix is going to be fine with a group of even moderately-aware players behind the keyboards.

    Quote:
Why server consolidation is not a good idea.

    1. Just because YOU like living in New York City doesn't mean I can't like Kansas.

Yay, you love having huge lag spikes as you get near the black market/wentworths and a busy broadcast. Congrats. Enjoy Freedom. Some of us - many of which you will get replies from with this subject - like *low population* servers. If we *wanted* to be on Freedom, we'd *be* on Freedom.

I have characters on Freedom. I rarely play them (and actually moved a character OFF of Freedom to finish leveling it to 50) because *I DON'T LIKE FREEDOM.* I dislike the banality of broadcast, the high percentage of *horrid* teams I've come across there, the lag around any gathering point- and I've got a decent connection and system. For much the same reason, I typically startin Galaxy City instead of Atlas Park - I don't *want* to log in to a costume contest with several 50s spamming powers and nonsense arguments in broadcast.

Some of us *like* nice, quiet servers.

    2, Kansas, part 2.

In addition, servers have their own personalities. No, I don't mean that literally, there's no AI to worry about if you start hearing "Daisy, Daisy" over your speakers or headset. Freedom's a crowded mess. Virtue is the RP server. Pinnacle is the "Drunk" server. Others have specific communities, such as those from Australia/NZ, Europe, etc.

    3. "I only saw one other person. World of Conancraft has eleventy billion!"

    So what?

We don't run around camping spawn points in this game. People are in missions. People are spread across many zones. Search on a map or do a /whoall and you'll miss those in missions, as well as those who are, for whatever reason, on /hide. Your "search" there didn't give you a full picture, not in the least.

I understand the "feel" of things being "not very populated," but take a good look around when you're in game. Typically, you don't really have a lot of visibility. Standing in steel canyon, there could be multiple, full 8 person groups surrounding you, and it's likely you'd never see them. We have buildings, walls, architecture, trees and more limiting our visibility. Yes, it can make you feel more alone... but that's rarely the case. Add to that that the population is spread between many, MANY zones, most quite large, and among two sides... well...

    4. "I put up my LFT flag and nothing happened!"

Learn to search. Don't just wait. Form a team yourself.

    5. "I AM SPARTACUS!" No, not any more.

Remember logging in and seeing all those slots? Everyone has those - some buy more than the base 12, you get an extra one each year, you could have a total of 36 on any server. Everyone does. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one. Every one has a character with a unique name. Maybe not a *good* name, but a unique one.

Now merge servers. Suddenly, CoolBlasterDude from server 1 is getting merged with CoolBlasterDude from Server 2. Who gets to keep their name? Nobody has been able to answer this with any degree of satisfaction. Add a number? But I am NOT CoolBlasterGuy1. And what if the name's too long? Does the older character keep it? What if they're not as active?

People are *VERY* attached to their names. They are, quite obviously, part of their character.

    6. "This Is SPARTA!" Sorry, Sparta exists already. You are GenericSG 8734 287 9798.

What else has a name? Supergroups. And I can *guarandamntee* that the same name is in use on multiple servers. Sometimes it's 'branches' of the same SG, sometimes it's coincidence. But with *everything* involved in an SG - from its identity and reputation on the server, to everything stored in the database about what it owns, what its base is like and such, this would be a disaster in the making. And no, auto merging them when the servers merge, even if they have room to, is not an option.

This, of course, assumes that they *CAN* move supergroups as a unit. More than likely, it'd just be a mass character move, with bases, prestige, anything stored in bases and all SG affiliations just gone forever.

    7. "I am... where'd Spartacus go?"

Remember all those slots? Well, you start with 1/3 of the available ones. You can buy up to 36 total (24 on top of the ones you get initially.) Now, what do you suppose would happen if you merged two servers, and someone has, say, 20 characters on each? Not unusual. In fact, before those extra slots, I had *filled up* several servers. Do those characters just disappear? Do they move? Free move to another server sounds great, right... well, except you now kick them from their supergroup, remove them from their friends lists and more. This makes for angry and unhappy customers. Or rather, ex customers.

    8. I will play where I damn well want to. And you can too.

And that should be blunt enough. If I want a crowded server, I'll go to Freedom. If I want an RP server, I'll go to Virtue. I do NOT want to be shoved onto another server I *don't* like. If I wanted to go there, *I'd be there.*

If the server you're on isn't "busy" enough for you, you have two options that won't bother anyone else.
    (A) If it's low enough, reroll. You have a ton of character slots for a reason.
    (B) If you don't want to reroll, server transfers are available, and relatively cheap. They also finish fast - you should be up and running and being spammed to join someone's SG on the new server in a few minutes, in most instances. So YOU can go to the server of YOUR choice without screwing ME over.

    9. "It'll free up server hardware for Freedom!" No, no it won't.

Freedom, because of the load it tends to have, already has more resources dedicated to it than other servers. And ALL of the servers have been upgraded multiple times. The servers are not allocated exactly the same. The servers that handle less of a load have less dedicated to them. So this argument doesn't fly.

    10. DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Last but not least (at least until better points come along to be added,) server consolidation is widely viewed in the industry as an MMO going on life support. No, we don't have WoWs numbers (and you should actually pay attention to when and how they got those.) They're an abberation in the MMO industry. COH has had and does have a very successful, sustainable population even at its lowest points, so there's no economic need to combine anything. The flip side of that, of course, has been suggested above - you crowd people together, break up their SGs and friends lists, cause characters to go missing and poeple definitely *will* quit, both out of annoyance and a sense of "The game is almost dead!"

    In conclusion....

As stated before, when it comes to server consolidation... HELL NO.

They put the limit there at 50 people for a reason. (I remember the prior Hive slideshow far too well.) No thanks.

How much of an impact this would have on the market would need to be seen. But if you can store 1,000 pieces of salvage in a universal spot on each account, then I'd definitely think that items would go onto the market at a much lower frequency than they are now, which would drive prices up.
See... demand wouldn't remain the same. Plus, again - we already have ways of "hoarding." I just don't see this having an impact at all, really. (Though, again, I don't really agree with 1000 since that seems a bit high.)

Who said it'd be 1000 of one item? And again, if we're told over and over that one person can't manipulate the market by the marketeers, why are we seeing that as "not a valid argument" here? We can already make "loot hoards" if we want - one base, 18 storage racks, 30 pieces each (which is already over half the OP's suggestion @540 pieces,) plus 10 of whatever in each market slot just sitting there (rising by level/market activity,) plus personal storage and vault storage.

Honestly, even if it *were* 1000 (which, if it were ever brought into game, I highly doubt it would be) that's a drop in the bucket compared to what's generated daily. 50 people, 20 pieces of salvage... how long do you think that takes to generate?

Sorry, I see the "it would drive market prices up!" as complete and utter bull. (Not to mention that, well, some people who'd use this tend to avoid the market anyway. Not getting business from people who wouldn't use your business anyway = no impact on your prices.)
