  1. I've thought about it numerous times. When I first made him (my namesake) I knew nothing about the game beyond what "Statesman Sez" and what I read when I was making the character. I just wanted to make something that fit the concept I wanted to create.

Well, I chose a Scrapper because the book said it was the best at soloing (I had no idea if I would team or enjoy the concept of doing so). Being a Werewolf, Claws was a good choice, and I almost picked Regen because that seemed like a werewolf thing, but decided against it. I didn't want to be a "Wolverine clone" and get made fun of (Yes I was that green... this was my first MMO). So I chose Invul (nothing but silver hurt me, so I took no damage).

This was back in I-2. Since then over the various changes to the game, I have thought about changing him to that Claws/Regen I originally thought, to making him something more team oriented (I love playing Tanks and Brutes- and now that Brutes can start as heroes...)

But no. He's still there, on the same server. Part of that is from unrecoverable badges that I couldn't get on a new characer, part of it is stubborness on my part (I WILL make him work, even through I-5. Even through ED- though at the time that almost broke me, Thanks for talking me out of it, Kitsune9tails!!). He is my first, most beloved, character. I do tips on him almost every day as a 'guilty pleasure' to play him. Though through bad luck the RNG hasn't given him the 2 VR's he need to currently 'finish' him, I do trials on him from time to time and am saving the EMP merits, and if I get them... great!

Though I did reach a compromise with myself. There's a Lyc on every server. A 'path less traveled' so to speak. Every version of him I would have liked to make exists on another shard of existance. Some I've played a lot, others just a few. My Invul/Axe Tank that I transferred from Virtue to Exalted has recently hit 50 and I now have him at +3. I replaced him with a low level Titan Weapons/Invul Brute that I'll get to at some point and level up. With each incarnation that I develop, I in turn, build on his story. The original was rather limited, knowing little of the game world. He has since been turned into a werewolf during the first Haloween event when supernatural creatures ran wild and Salamanca(retroactively) was cut off (I came in after that event, but that would make sense since it would take him time to get some kind of control over himself). Where once he gained some control, he got help from one of my SG mates to keep from spreading his lycanthropy and use his powers for good (the original SG The Legacy Foundation we made in I-3 ties ourselves to the background of the Legacy Chain made during I-6+ with the introduction of the City of Villains, and originally the Midnighters). As the story progresses, I find more and more ways to tie him into the world this game creates, since when I created him, I had no clue about anything in this game.

I now have, on various servers, one that was recruited by the Dark Watcher and joined the Vanguard during the Rikti War, one that bonded with a Kheldan to save its existance (and the shapeshifting is conceptually... neat). The list goes on and on.

So to answer your question. Have I rerolled my main? Yes. However, I have not, and will never give up, the one and only Lyc that endeared myself to this game; and hopefully endeared myself to the players I spend time with under that name.

    Lyc~ the philisopical werewolf.

BUT . . . if the suppression issue isn't as complicated as I'm admittedly GUESSING then by all means it should be done.
I agree and accept that if that's the case. My biggest beef is also with the lack of customization for them currently.

I tend not to form teams because I do want to talk to people and they don't seem interested in that. Even teams I've joined it's been hard sometimes on the higher population servers to get people to chat. However, I may be spoiled on running with the same group of folks for almost 7 years. On the occasions I solo, I have a tab with all my chat channels up just for the background noise. I lurk for the most part, but will say something on occasion when I feel I have something to add. That's led to some good dialouge, and I even learn something from time to time.

I kind of liked the smaller teams more than the bigger ones. On a team of 3, I could solo a spawn if the others were occupied - or when ambushes hit I could take them. I felt more important in the team and more able to determine the outcome of a fight - instead of being in a team of 8 where there is a flash of light, the enemies go down, and I'm not sure what happened.
I could go 'above it all' with my response, but I have gotten that same feeling too in smaller teams, as have my other SG mates during slow times when there's not much of us on, or when they PuG a smaller team. It's a great feeling, and one worthy of note.

There's a sense of faster progression in larger teams, where the xp flows like wine and you steamroll everything, but in my opinion, some of the most epic feelings I've had in game were with smaller teams.

I recall a PuG STF that dwindled down to 5 people. One left early, one DC'd and the last left because they thought it was a lost cause. I was on my Rogue MM, and I won't lie, I don't remeber whoall else was there at this moment (got a screenie though... somewhere) and we pushed on 'til we got Lord Recluse. It was a PITA, but we did it. We wound up discussing strategy and what we could do and actually, finally, brought him down.

Smaller teams allow for that true 'moment of glory' for the contribution of our characters. It's why some folks complain about the Trials, and why they feel out of the loop doing them.

I hope this is what the new DA, and small team/solo Incarnate content going forward, keeps in mind in its development.

EDIT I don't mind soloing and that's when I leave on all my channels and I tend to 'lurk'. However when I do team, I do it because I enjoy the company. A quiet team is a boring team, no matter how successful it is.

This. Very, very, very much... This. I'd pay for a full set of 'already in game and a few new ones' jet pack costume pack without batting an eyebrow.

Also, with the rocketboard, coyote etc. they could easily supress all powers instead of de-toggling, making them more desireable. They seem to be ignoring that possiblity altogether. I really can't understand why.

I would buy a Motorcycle power in a heartbeat, without jump (or with limited jump). A rocketbike would be just as cool, and I'd buy that too, but not if I had to sacrifice the regular Motorcycle. Vanity powers like this do have a certain 'style over substance' in their desirability.

More importantly, I want skins that I can choose from. My namesake being a werewolf, what is in my opinion the two coolest recent additions to the game (canine pet and transformation travel power) are too limited for the price they offer them at. I understand why, but I just can't afford something I have no interest in using on any character, and have purchased neither. This same limitation chafes me with Masterminds too. Even if I can't color co-ordinate to match me, at least let me have, or unlock, other skins to use on my summons. However, that's a long post I've made before and is reserved for another topic.

It surprises me, that in a game that flaunts and promotes its customization, they're now pushing out specific non-customizable things.

Worse, from what I've seen so far, I worry we'll be seeing a White Wolf Transformation power (for 800 pts.) and then somewhere down the road a Black Wolf Transformation power (for another 800 pts.) etc, etc.

And I'm not sure which is worse, that they'll do just that, or that they won't and jilt the folks who want nothing but that one perfect power they'd pay for, but miss out because they have so many others already they don't think it'd be profitable to do it. (I wouldn't mind a brown wolf, but before that they already have a white, grey, and black wolf model to promote... individually if they keep the same business model... I doubt I'll ever see it... how about a fox? I do have a Kitsune.) In a perfect world, the overall color could be based off a character's primary 'top' color. At least then we'd have some choice. As it is, we have to hope they pick the color we want, and even then, did we break and waste points on something else because we didn't expect it?

For example, what if they came out with a black and white Rocket Sled Tuesday for the same cost as the red and white and it did the same thing... would you feel cheated, or would you buy it too? How about a few weeks later when they introduce the blue and white version?

I can even almost overlook the qualitative difference between the rocket board and the carpet, but it's really just the same thing with different art and animation (which is why I can almost forgive it and gave in bought both). I love this game, I love the Dev's... but I'm just sayin'.
  6. MY personal problem with powers such as this, and others, is that in a game that prides itself on personalization, powers such as these kill it.

If it were a 'canine' power, with the ability to choose different models/colors/sizes at the tailor, I'd pay 800 points for that... even more. I'd buy a 'feline' or 'reptile' set at the same price point without question. As it is, it's a complete pass (which if you check my namesake is saying something!) It's the same problem I had with the German Shepard vanity pet, or any other version that later comes out. The price is too high for something so specific (especially with the 'single summon' aspect they have added.

Before this, I even consoled myself on the fact that I was going to buy everything they put on the market because I was a 'fanboy' like that... but have since decided that I'm actually going to be picky.

What? In a few months there'll be a "White Wolf" transformation power that'll detoggle you for 800 points. A few months after that, they'll make a "Grey Wolf" that does the same thing... for 800 points. Who knows... maybe they'll get crazy and make a "Black Wolf" power that does the same thing a few months later... for the same point cost! Say they fix it all and make it supression instead? Still... too much for something so specific. Then if they don't, I'd want one that matched my color scheme, and there's the catch with such specific powers.

Not cool in any context, and I can't, and won't support that behavior. The first jab to cover expenses in creating it to begin with, I can support... but to be honest, I didn't because I expected this very thing (seeing as how you couldn't customize the rocket boards either). When they come out with a 'Brown Wolf' version, I might consider it because it'd match my namesake. but with the awesome character creator we have now, I can get a 'fox' version for free between it, and beast-run with my Kitsune (which still wouldn't interest me in getting the Coyote pack... because.... yeah, and we're back at square one).

I LOVE this game. However, the current market trends make it easy for me to not waste my Paragon Points on these things, and will make me more cautious on purchases later on.

(This is from a guy who got the rocket board and magic carpet on impulse, knowing that they were the same thing, for concept reasons)

EDIT: THIS is why I have a Lycanthrope main, but NEVER wanted a shapeshift power to exist in-game. From the time of Granite Armor and MM pets, I KNEW that any shapeshifting set would KILL the personalization anyone has for characters in game. Other games have proved this, before and since. This round of power availabilty and the methods they have chosen to present them only continues my pessimism in that regard. The costume creator gives us enough. If we're lacking, THAT'S where they need to add it. NOT a powerset/travel power...

Again, I LOVE this game, but decisions like these will only hurt it on the long run.

I'll have to agree with this, because it's also an homage to the greatest playerbase I've run into in my limited MMO experience. Few of the MMO's I have tried have as comprehensive a wealth of information I find on the Paragonwiki. It is truly a labor of love.

Actually, I can agree with most folk's reasons why CoH is the best. So, taking all that into account, I'll add in another that is easily overlooked. Just as important as the ammount of character customization, is the ease of mission setting and the communications customization.

Communications and mission setting options. This may not be unique to City of, but in my experience it is. As the leader (and even not) I can literally SEE everyone's missions, and if I choose, where on the map it is. As the leader, I can SET them so everyone will readily know where to go, and what the mission is. They can even read the text themselves if they're so inclined as to click the red star on the nav menu to see the story about it (or 'more' in the mission roster tab if the mission isn't set). There's (for premium and above) an ease of access to channels that you may get/participate in to meet any number of your special interestes. Even for Free there's at least one Global channel (Help) that they can talk to EVERYONE they share the server with if they wish (and if those who want to see it, wish).

Other games I have played, I either depend on the mission holder to guide me to it and explain what needs to be done, or I can participate, but with little explaination as to why I'm doing it, other than the other player needs help with it, but even then I'm dependent on them to actually tell me where to go. Some are obvious if you've played the game long enough, but still, it's either expected you know, or are required to follow someone's instructions without any support from the game itself to help you. Even if I'm the leader of the group. Maybe there's something I'm missing. I solo on those games unless I'm with friends because it's too frustrating compared to here. I cut my MMO teeth on CoH really, so this is what I compare all other MMO's I try, to. None other has been as easy and friendly to teaming as this game has been (which is ironic considering the concept of an MMO).

Other games I have played have the equivalent of Broadcast, Local, Team, and Tell. Well, there's Trade Channels for the outposts or safehouses you may find yourself in but from what I can tell that doesn't really count. Global or player-interest formed channels are nonexistant. (We have a channel here that's just for our SG mates and friends of the SG we like to play with and who like to run with us... just 'cause we can). The games with limited chat channels usually have so much useless trolling and BS that I learn to ignore it alltogether most of the time, which is sad, because I'm sure I miss good nuggets of information and the like amid the vast nuggets of... well I'll leave it at that.

tl;dr version. At the end of the day just going to the mission the team leader sets, be it a regular one or a TF, AND know why I'm doing the mission if I'm that interested enough to find out; AND being able to chat and listen in on the player created channels I share an interest in, no matter where I'm at, or what server I'm on, makes this game the most comfortable and friendly fit for me.

Anyway, the plan sounds good! Looking forward to the auditions and seeing how it all plays out!
  9. To keep momentum going on this, I have a question. What is the desired goal if you can get everyone you need to roll with this?

    Weekly/monthly/or other, episodes?

What would be the (currently planned) approximate running time of each episode?

What kind of schedule/requirements will be expected of the cast and crew (deadlines, seperate or team scheduled script reads, etc.)?

Finally, how soon would you like to go into full production with it, again assuming you can get everything you need to roll? Basically, do you have scripts ready to go, etc.?
  10. I miss being able to use those commands to put borders around my chat boxes (or make the chatbox clear).

I can still get them to work as keybinds with pregenerated text, but not to be at the front of my text string when I hit enter to type like I used to

Actually killed a split-personality character of mine. His 'good' side was the regular enter and was a normal black and white text box while his 'evil' personality, which was the numpad's enter button, Was a black background with a yellow border and red text (and I'd often use capslock with that one too when I had the wherewithall to do so).

That had better be the case, there's no ramps anywhere in Paragon City. None for the Hospitals, Universities... anywhere. My wife, who's in an arcitectural field, noticed this when she first started playing. That and the crazy design philosopies at play in building mission interiors that you'd never see in real life.

    This.

As my main is (obvious by my namesake) a lycanthrope, I think it's neat, but too specific to be desirable for any of my characters. The same colorization issues are what has kept me from purchasing the German Shepard (would have been better as a colorable canine instead). Adding insult to injury, they toss the Black Wolf I might have considered purchasing into the 'super packs' which I will probably never touch.

They REALLY need to have some sort of color customization options for these things, like make it match whatever color you chose for your primary 'top' chest color so we at least have some sort of control over how it looks. Especially for the point cost of what equates to a vanity toy.

Next on the market, a White Wolf for 600 points. Next month, we'll feature a Grey Wolf for 600 points! Too specific for too much. That's my take on it anyway.

  15. I think he was referring more to the symbolism than the act. Sure Sister Psyche and probably a lot more can be attributed to Emmert, but Statesman was, and is, the symbol of the game and there's history there. Going forward he'll still be the symbol, but how he's presented, or branded, has changed.

I don't think there was any malice in offing him. In fact, probably the opposite. Deceased, Statesman can be a symbol without overshadowing everything. His passing, as Millar said, is a way of letting the game grow beyond Statesman and from the way it ultimately sounds, the Freedom Phalanx as a whole.

I have the feeling as the game progresses, the Freedom Phalanx (and Arachnos) will play a role in the game, but the focus will shift from them being the Earth's premire super powers to us (the players) being the Earth's ultimate heroes (and villains).

Wouldn't surprise me with Statesman gone, The Well will lose interest in Recluse, and he'll find himself losing power and influence in the world. After all, aren't heroes and villains often defined by their adversaries? Recluse lost his, and he didn't even take him out.

Wonder if the next SSA is going to be about him scrambling to save himself the loss of interest (and therefore power) from The Well...

All based on attitudes and... I just really think these fit the best.

Brad? Manticore. He's as serious minded as Brad is. I could see him taking things too seriously and missing the double entendre going on and thus being the 'straight man' to a lot of the humor (plus who Janet and Dr Frank are just makes this so much funnier).

Janet? Sister Psyche. Especially when she gets all 'wishy washy' under the kind of psychic and emotional assaults that would be going on in that story...

Frank? Mother Mayhem. They're both self absorbed narcissists who want to be 'loved' by everyone... plus they even dress alike!

Dr. Scott? Citadel. Closest thing to a character with wheels in the game.

Rocky? Emperor Cole. His penchant for gold clothing, and Mother's desire to be loved by him (and everyone else...)

Magenta? Ghost Widow. The very "above it" attitude... and the accent.

Riff Raff? Scirocco. 'Cause Ghost Widow is Magnenta... plus those dreadlocks and helmet kind of have the same look.

Columbia? Silver Mantis. Do I really have to explain?

The Criminologist? Statesman. Detached and serious.

Eddie? Black Scorpion. I just want to see him sing "What Ever Happened to Saturday Night" and play the sax... Plus he's got that same kind of attitude, and probably spells about as well...
  19. Any AT: desirability varies, usefulness varies. A player who knows and plays their AT's well are desired, A player who does neither are annoying and undesireable. Exception: when a team needs filler to start a TF or something...

This, of course, also varies based on whatever AT bias the leader and/or team may have, or any AT stereotypes they adhere to.

I think Statesman fills those shoes even better now that he's passed on. He's now a symbol, an ideal to live up to; rather than a living person who can be criticized, demeaned, or have his every move and word scrutinized every time he speaks out loud.

As some folks say (and as at least one sad madman wished) Nobody truly appreciates an artist until after they're gone. I would like to posit that in Statesman's case (as in the case of many real and imagined heroes throughtout time) this will be the way it'll play out, or at least how they hope to portray it in game.

Instead of looking at his negative traits, we can now look at his positive traits and, with our heroes, hope to reach what he accomplished in his lifetime. The goal here is who is Paragon supposed to look up to?

Now? Us. The ball's in our court.

Having played an Ice Tank, and Blaster, I have to agree with this sentiment. It does very well handing targets that get within Melee range, which is what it's supposed to do. Once it's out of Melee range though, is the 'situational' part of the power. They're now forced to use whatever ranged attacks they have (many things are weaker at ranged attacks, unfortunately some foes are better at range, but that's where knowing enemies and tactics comes in).

Would I wish it kept folks from knocking back? On some of my Tanks, Scrappers, and Brutes, very much yes I wish I had more powers with -KB sometimes. That could actually be a bennie to a Melee or Armor power set at some point (reverting it only to Knockdown) and would be awesome (Mud Pots would be thematically great for that, for example) whereas Ice might make KB even easier, so I suppose we should count our blessings. I have a number of Ranged/Control characters that wish they had more knockback (And one crazy Blapper of mine that rues the fact he's NRG/NRG )

As it stands, Knockback is a power that has its tactical uses and pitfalls. After seeing a number of Dev's post about it, that's kind of how it is by design.

Even better may be the irony of him discovering that he took Statesman's power only to forge a connection to the Well, and it has other things in mind of him instead of his plans for power (remember, that's the 'fast path' and that makes whomever accepts it pawns of The Well). Beyond that, how does The Well feel about losing one of its pawns, or does it feel it gained a more manipulatable one in trade, so allowed everything to happen to begin with?

[The Well]: Statesman understands how this works, and seeks to keep me from my game... bored now. Oh? Someone else wants his power AND he's stupid?! Hell yeah!

I'll be happy as long as they don't write it in a way that puts words in your villain's mouth, but beyond that, I see the villain players getting the upper hand on Wade for his betrayal, and the Heroes somehow finding closure and justice for what he's done.

Even if that means our heroes know Wade suffered at the hands of our villains, and have to let it lay at that for now...

I think that it'd be a great way of honoring him, and of helping to draw newer players into the game lore.
    I think that's a good idea.

I think a great character for the 'eye catching' NPC should be Maria Jenkins, visiting the memorial, and willing to tell you all about him through a series of dialogue trees.
