Quote:Yes people like you and Rubberlad are suggesting that there's a problem here but you aren't really providing much more of a solution other than saying "the Devs should make this game more like a comic book". How do you do that exactly? And even if there were no limits on software technology or server architecture who's to say your interpretation of a comic book would be the same as mine, the Devs' or anyone elses?Just because you can't emulate it completely is no reason to make a hard left and floor it out of the general neighborhood at top speed.
Being on a trial not only imperfectly emulates the feel of a superhero, it goes more for the feel of 1984. The cutscene at the beginning should be in faux black-and-white, and a should have someone in a military suit match back in forth in front of the league forcing us to repeat over and over "As an individual, I am unimportant. My significance is nothing in the face of the collective." She could even have the Frau Farbissina accent and be swinging her riding crop while we repeated the deprotagonization mantra.
Yes one could argue that the typical raid/trial paradigm of most MMOs don't really live up to the "look and feel" of what they're trying to deliver. I'm simply making the case that until computer technology advances I really don't think MMOs are going to be able to deliver much that's any better. This is not a specific failing of this particular game - this is a general problem of all current MMOs.
P.S. It might be fascinating if there was in fact a MMO based on Orwell's 1984. Not exactly sure how you could make a completely playable game based off of that, but you might be able to adapt it into some kind of generalized futuristic dystopian thing. -
Quote:Well as long as the "claim all" option will allow you shoot yourself in the foot with things like picking the wrong Vet attack power in the wrong order (to mess up the Origin bonus you get) I'll gladly waste an extra 30 seconds to pick everything manually to be sure of my selections.i dont claim stuff manually because im A) lazy and B) dont care about the stuff being in my powers window, i rarely look there anyway unless i need to grab a temp power (and i always claimed everything anyway under the old system, the new one just makes it easier lol)
Sure if I made 10 new characters a day I might want to care about a "claim all" option. But since I don't I'll probably never use that button. YMMV of course.
-
This is true. But as ClawsandEffect and Hyperstrike implied there just seems to be better reasons to take the few extra seconds to claim things manually rather than to deal with the problems of the "claim all" option. It's not like I create new characters often enough that I need to save that much time doing it. *shrugs*

Quote:Sure but that's akin to saying something like, "I wouldn't mind owning my own Boeing 747 as long as I didn't have to pay $200 million for it."As I recall, one of the Devs, Castle or Posi I think, said they'd be "OK" with on demand build switching as long as it caused all of your powers to go through a cool-down cycle.

Basically they were telling us that even though there might be a "better" solution for the situation having to come up with a way to make sure all of our powers to go through a special cool-down cycle to account for a build change would take far too much time and effort to develop. Forcing us to go to a trainer might be considered an less than ideal way to handle it, but it was a relatively simple and foolproof way to make sure no one can do anything "naughty".
Again I just don't think the Devs will ever consider this to be a big enough "problem" to ever be worth having to figure out a better way to handle it. -
Quote:I can accept your point that the mechanics of what it takes to successfully complete these MMO trials sometimes don't match the romantic ideals of what superheroes manage to do in comic books.I'm reposting my comment from the MoM thread because it's more relevent/on-topic here (I think):
Meanwhile Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman spend two minutes chucking Darkseid across the galaxy while Thor, Luke Cage and Spider Woman stop a Skrull invasion dead in it's tracks before it even started. And believe you me, those superheroes dont give one iota about complicated defense mechanics. And they dont get a second or third chance to fail either.
This is where the Incarnate trials go all wrong. It's MMO limitations versus being at the pinnacle of your superheroic career. The trials should have MASSES of baddies that every participant/AT can take on in small groups via simultaneous complete objectives before everyone turns to focus on the boss(es). It should be a fun, engaging thrill ride for all rather than "fail 5 times, learn the mechanics and THEN farm the event successfully for all time - until the Devs nerf it later."
Again, focus on empowering the players to enjoy, embrace others wanting to partake, and just let rip with those newfound incarnate abilities rather than constantly reminding them to be more clever, restrained and tightly orchestrated.
You're supposed to be a ******* superhero for chrissakes! Dont hide from the boss behind the reactor until he is fully debuffed, pick it up and throw it at him! What's the matter with you?!
But just to play Devil's Advocate one could argue that groups of players having to figure out the best way to complete a MMO trial is in itself a fun gaming activity regardless of its relationship to a form of fictional literature. Sometimes it's simply hard to translate abstract source material into a format that can be used to create workable MMO content. If you can figure out how to perfectly capture the grandeur of your comic book scenarios and squish them into the confines of a MMO I'm sure the Devs of this game would love to talk to you about it.

Quote:Yeah that's kind of what I was assuming based on what Energizing_Ion said. It would have been really crummy if it didn't track credit for a given secondary trial badge unless you had managed to complete the trial in the first place. I guess in this case we just have to deal with not getting a "cosmetic" progress bar until the main badge triggers. The counter does count the nightmares, but doesn't show up until you complete the trial. I failed one and then the second one was successful. My counter then showed 6/16.
It could probably almost be considered a "bug" to be working like that, but I assume this is probably one of those kinds of things that we'll just have to accept as WAI. -
Quote:I agree that these two suggestions could be reduced to one with the proper command line commands. But even the second suggestion has been suggested many times over the years without any hint the Devs would allow it.Both decent ideas. Of course if there was a command line method of changing builds you could do it all with one macro. So maybe we only "need" the second option?

The main reason why the Devs linked build changes to the trainers in the first place was to completely prevent any attempts of anyone trying to exploit the benefit of a build change during PvE or PvP combat. It's not that build changes require a trainer to accomplish - it's that having to travel to a trainer physically enforces the safeguard the Devs want to maintain here. And it's not even a question of a "cooldown period" either because even if they gave us a remote build change command with a timer the fact that you could potentially change even once during combat would likely be considered too overpowered.
For these reasons I doubt the Devs will ever make it any easier to accomplish build changes. *shrugs* -
Quote:Well I know there are people like that out there. A couple of weeks after Going Rogue went live I saw a Praetorian native (with the Praetorian-only badges) in Steel Canyon who had something like 750 badges. Having lots of badges is impressive enough but even I consider the people who like to "Power Badge" (the badging version of Power Leveling) to be a different kind of critter altogether. As Damz says, though, if it was on Union and the person's global name begins with "s", then yeah, he's KINDA serious about badges (no, it's not me). So serious that the main Union badge hunter channel has his name all over it.

Quote:I actually don't know if there's some kind of "must complete the trial successfully before you can farm that badge" requirement.I think you have to have completed the MOM trial at least once then you can farm the nightmare badge correct?
I've failed the MOM trial 3x now and don't see any badge indicator on my toon that's been on it 3x.
As I mentioned I've only run that trial twice now and I've been lucky enough to have successfully completed both runs. I don't think I bothered to check my "closest to completion" list until after I finished the first run. I suppose it's possible the game would force you to have a successful run before it saves any progress into your badge list, but that would be fairly weird all things considered. It might be a case where the game is still tracking your progress but won't show it to you until you have a successful completion. *shrugs* -
It's been established that Mercury is actually so close to the Sun that its movement in its orbit (from our point of view) is affected by the relativistic effects of the Sun's immese gravity. In effect its appearance to us can only be accurately tracked/predicted when you account for Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Based on that I would imagine that photographing Mercury from Earth will always be a little bit "weird" as far as that goes.

Quote:I realize the idea that this is an actual alien spacecraft is very unlikely. But just as a point of discussion if it were an alien spacecraft it could be there because the technology it's using for propulsion requires close proximity to stars for a power source. For all we know it's using some kind of wormhole generator that needs to be close to a star's CMEs to activate. Heck even Star Trek taught us that ships can use the gravity well of a star for time travel.More likely possibility:
1) That a race of super advanced aliens who can park a giant cloaked starship next to Mercury (why? No idea...what could there be to study on that rock?) will sit there and let their ship be hit by a billion tons of solar plasma.
or
2) That UFO nuts are...nuts, and this is a computer artifact.
Hmm. Tough call.

Maybe this movie will end up being one of those which are "so bad they're good" cult classics.
That's probably its only hope at this point. -
Quote:I can see how someone could possibly go from 0 to 900 badges in 4 or 5 weeks, but that person would have to be pretty serious about it to say the least. If the person your talking about begins with letter S . . . then yes he did get it during the small window . . . . and yes he got all those badges, the dude is unreal at collecting badges!

Being a full vet (with previous AE badges, etc.) will now get you about 55 badges as soon as you create a new character. Then as Aggelakis said there's about 400 Explores and 25 Histories you could get in a few hours (after spending the time to shift alignments of course). You could probably get around 150 more badges within maybe a week from the Accomplishments/Achievements/Accolades groups. There's probably another 150 you could get relatively quick from the Defeat/PvP/Gladiator groups. You could probably get another 50 from the Inventions/Market groups in another few days or so if you threw a few 100 million INF at it for speed. And you might be able to get another 50 out of the Ouroboros/AE groups if you spent some days on those. Basically the only ones you couldn't really get within that timeframe would be the Event and Day Job badges.
So yes while getting 900 badges might be "possible" in 4 or 5 weeks the person working on that would probably have to be spending a solid 8-12 hours a day on it at the very least and/or maybe have a group of other players specifically helping with the effort. More power to them I guess.

Quote:Well as always it boils down to getting a group willing to do it. Lord knows if it were just up to me I'd easily spend the time to farm it solo. But it's sometimes hard to talk "crazy" ideas like that into a League who just wants to play it "normal".Lothic: I'd agree with your opinion as well. This is a nice badge to farm out to get through most of the defeats quickly, but it's luck of the draw for who you happen to get. The nice thing is, the "farming" of it goes easily enough. If you want to give yourself a leg-up on the badge by banging phase 1 out five or six times, you'll be well into the teens (out of 16) with any luck. (I did it four times and ended up with 14/16, but again, it's luck of the draw.)
Anyway I've only managed to run MoM twice so far and after two successful runs I've already managed 5/16. With my luck I'll probably get up to 15/16 real quick then take like 20 more runs to get the last one, but at this point I'm not going to worry about it until that actually happens.
P.S. I won't quibble about how you managed to get 14/16 in four runs when (as far as I understand it) you could've only gotten at best 12 in four runs (3x4) but I'll simply assume you've managed to have good luck with it regardless.

Quote:Not sure of the chances for them spawning - they may all be equal. I can tell you that the last one that appeared for my group was Paladin. That may have just been pure chance though.I think you just indirectly answered this question/concern. If it's possible to get this badge after just one night's worth of effort then it can't be too hard/rare to get all the spawns. I suppose the only follow-up question I'd have is how many times did your league restart the trial to get them all? Was it like 10 times or more like 20 or 30?Quote:My team got the badge last night by running the first phase, then quitting and doing it again repeatedly. But I think that anyone who runs the trial on a regular basis will eventually get this one without any special effort.
At any rate I don't think I'm going to worry about "farming" this one unless I find other people interested in doing it. Like you say it sounds like a badge that will happen after a certain number of runs regardless. -
Quote:I actually saw an Incarnated Titan Weapon character in a TPN run last night. I've known for years that it's always been relatively easy to PL characters from 1 to 50 in this game if you know the tricks but it still always amazes me when I see an example of it in the flesh.I'm personally amused that they released and AoE-heavy melee set with longish activation times at the same time as these new trials. I'm sure there will be a lot of frustrated newbie Incarnate titan weaponeers.
-
Pretty sure it's something that will take multiple runs by design. I did the trial once last night and now have a progress bar for that badge. Apparently only like 3(?) of them spawn for that first phase in any given run.

Quote:Yes I would agree that people who are acting like "feminine hygiene products" about it are pretty sad and should be avoided.Playing with people whose goal is to complete something as quickly and impressively as possible, regardless of how they treat others to achieve said goal, make me not want to play the game.
But there is a valid point to be considered here about being selective in some situations. As Irish Fury mentioned "A league full of normal level 50 toons wouldn't stand a chance against a 54+2 AV" and I would hardly want to waste my time trying for Master badges in that kind of situation.
Again I think in 99% of cases any concerns about "complete[ing] something as quickly and impressively as possible" is absolutely silly. But as long as recruitment is handled maturely and respectfully I think there are legitimate reasons for being picky like that in specific, clearly defined situations. -
Quote:So since only the ones in the first phase of the trial count for this badge and since the ones that do spawn seem totally random I guess it's just going to take a random number of runs to get them all. Hopefully they are all equally likely to spawn - it'd be crummy if one of them was like 10x less likely than the others. The original post has been updated with specific AV requirements for the Dreamwalker badge.
-
At my most strict I would only STRONGLY PERFER all people in a league to already be 50+ if I'm involved with a specific attempt at a Master badge run. I think it's only fair to the people trying to get the hard badges that all the characters involved are as capable as possible to maximize the chances for success at getting those badges.
But even then (as Liz Bathory mentioned) I think almost any league can tolerate a few non-maxed out characters. Ultimately this game is not THAT hard that it requires 100% perfectly min/maxed characters in all situations.
Bottomline if specific Master badges are not an issue then I think just about any reasonable PUG can finish any given iTrial. Even the two new trials will eventually become "routine" for 99% of the leagues who run them. Any league organizer who's being any more picky than that is simply being too anal/dictatorial about it. *shrugs* -
Quote:What's all this Spring stuff? Did the issue release paradigm change when I wasn't looking?I'd say that now that we live in a "post CoH:Freedom" world it's quite likely that the standard paradigm for when to expect Issue releases has significantly changed. We've already seen in the last year or two that the Devs have started to break content releases up into "sub-issues" that don't clearly follow the original "one issue every 4 months" model anyway.Quote:Have we ever seen an issue released in Jan or Feb? I assume no as that's too close to the devs just getting back from the holidays.
Basically I wouldn't really ever count on a long term release schedule to follow a strict yearly calendar scheme again... assuming it ever really did in the first place.

Becoming involved with the game's "lore" has never been a top priority for me. Over the years I've read pretty much all the mission text for every mission in the game. But to be honest I've never been -that- interested in the exploits of the Freedom Phalanx or the like. I've accepted it as the backstory of the game while focusing more on the development of my own characters.
But I must admit these SSAs have been so well done that I'm actually finding myself paying close attention to the connected story presented in them. I'm very much looking forward to seeing "how the story ends" with this arc and hope that there will be other future arcs as well done as this.
