Quote:First of all the Devs have already said that the fate of Passport will be handled some time -after- they square away the NA/EU server list merge. Second of all if I just have an alt on Freedom, log in and earn this ACCOUNT wide badge then why would we be forced to do any server transferring at all? This would not be a valid test for any "server transfer related" badge at all. There might be a specific reason for awarding an "account wide" badge to all players that take part in the Freedom event. What other account wide badge dealt with going to another server? One that all of the badgers have been begging for for years?
My bags are packed and I'm just waiting on my "Passport" to arrive
Basically this new badge was simply meant to be an enticement to participate in a server stress test, and a pretty shortsighted enticement at that.
-
I believe the "ding" we normally get is simply not working for these 3 new badges.
Otherwise I think they are as you would normally expect them to be.
Lucky is the 7th year anniversary badge and is a character-based badge like all the other anniversary badges.
Loyal Customer and The Constant are account-based badges. -
Quote:I have nothing against the idea of enticing players with a reward to swarm to a particular server at a particular time to provide you with some server stress testing. But please reconsider ever doing that again with a BADGE as the reward. Surely there could be almost anything more appropriate to give us that would not have a -permanent- impact on what players have access to earn in the future. We don't anticipate the queue being an issue as we will be cranking it way up for this event. That's the purpose of the event, and the entire reason we created this badge, is to get as many people as possible onto one server with the improvements as possible.
We'll have more updates later on today.
Think of it this way: The Devs very recently changed how people could earn the 5th Columnist badge because many newer players never had a chance to earn it the original way. You had to make that change because circumstances created a situation that locked players from getting that badge based on limited windows of opportunity. Please learn from that lesson and avoid creating yet another situation where you have a badge "trapped" by a relatively tiny window of opportunity. -
I predict it'll be about three and a half minutes before the company who makes these ears will also make a "cat tail" belt that makes a tail flick around based on the same technology.
-
These are both interesting ideas, but I could see how both of them might be far more complex than the Devs would ever be willing to tackle.
Of the two I think your "sidekick" idea is much more likely to be possible in some limited form. In fact people have been suggesting something along the lines of this idea for years now. I think with the introduction of Incarnate Lore pets we now have a new model the Devs can build on to allow people to gain a "sidekick" pet of some kind. -
Quote:Yeah we have no intention of seeing this in 3D. Sure we might miss a few minutes of visuals that might be good looking in 3D, but for the vast majority of the movie it'll likely only prove to be annoying. Until they stop charging extra for 3D and somehow manage to make it work without glasses we're probably going to avoid it as much as we can from now on. *shrugs*Also : 3D sucks and I'm never, ever going to another 3D movie, at least not in this generation. Everything was so bloody dark and all the action scenes became a confusing mess.

IIRC the Devs mentioned during last week's Usteam chat that they were intending to give us a new iTrial roughly once per Issue into the foreseeable future. Of course that remains to be seen, but if we do end up getting a new iTrial roughly every 2-3 months then we will have plenty of options relatively soon.

Oh I've seen a few failures so far regardless. I guess my main point was that using "4 teams of 6" probably wouldn't lead to an automatic success or failure all by itself. The trial leader would still be responsible for making sure the 4 teams were doing the right things at the right time.

Yeah I'm still not convinced this is going to become the classic that Arnie's Conan has become but it does looks like it might be a good movie in and of itself. If it ends up being better that say the Clash of the Titans remake then at least it might be worth a matinee sometime.

I don't mind the Devs trying to come up with some kind of incentive to get people to log on during a specific period of time to do some server stress testing. But making that "incentive" be a badge is a horrible idea for what should be incredibly obvious reasons.

It's amazing how the Devs seem to forget the history of their own game sometimes. Way back during the very first Halloween Event (in 2004) they made the arguable mistake of only running the event for about one week. This meant you only had one week to get the event badges. After enough people "pointed out" that allowing only one week for that event was not really reasonable the Devs have, to my knowledge, never had a Halloween Event that lasted that short a time since. So instead of remembering lessons like these they decide to fall back to a badge earning window of only 3 hours? It really boggles the mind.
I'm encouraged that they are already reconsidering the timing of this badge. But seriously a badge should NEVER have been considered to this kind of scenario in the first place. -
Quote:A tiny number of games have moved to F2P from a monthly scheme and had some success with it. Other games start out as F2P and do what they do from the start. But more often than not when a long time monthly subscription game shifts to F2P it's a sure sign that the game is dying. CoH has been a successful monthly game for so long that moving to F2P now (for any reason) could only be taken as a -bad- sign.At the risk of getting mod-smacked, Champions Online tried this exact thing, and it didn't do anything for them. Since I've never seen player density as a compelling argument (I tend to only respect paying subscriber numbers), I have to say that this does not sound like something I'd like to see.
Like Zombie Man said it might eventually come to that here. But I would hope that's still years away at this point. -

Quote:Your hyperbolic, hyper-strict interpretation of the word 'sacrosanct' and what you perceive as an "incorrect" usage of it in a sci-fi TV show is vaguely amusing. On the other hand if this criticism of yours is going to be one of the main things you remember about this show in years to come then I find that to be a bit unfortunate for your sake. *shrugs*As I said and explained the US does not hold any religion sacrosanct.
If someone were to perform a mayan human sacrifice to Quetzalcoatl they would be prosecuted under the law, which is secular.
The reason anything Sacrosanct doesn't work is because it cannot be challenged. If according to my belief you should be put to death it cannot be question and you must be put to death. Under this law everyone who is not x should be killed instantly. It's unquestionable and you can't say its wrong and if you can't say its wrong or question it then it is right in the eyes of the law, especially when it makes positive claims.
It is simply a poorly worded point in the script and isn't what was meant, probably, by the writer. What was meant is that religions would be respected and honored within the alliance. Which is generally ok, but over time, as we have seen in real life, nutters will make that stance slowly be retracted. This was written 20 years ago so its understandable that it wasn't considered at the time. -

This game has been around long enough now that it'll only go F2P once there's not enough people still willing to pay the monthly subscriptions. I realize there are other examples of games out there that are doing well enough under a F2P model. But as long as this game is still making reasonable profits why would our Devs be motivated to change things?

Well we know the upcoming Steampunk Pack is going to include yet another travel power (which'll probably be close to the type of movement we can get with the Jump Pack) so it seem possible that we'll keep getting new ones in the future. Maybe a Huge Run can be one of them.

Quote:It doesn't surprise me that there are level 50 Praetorians who have never left Praetoria. What surprises me is that there are -only- 6 of them right now. Somehow I figured there'd be at least several dozen or more. I know lots of people who play this game who like to work on "obscure" goals like this.He did mention that his favourite stat was that only 6 praetorian made characters had gone from level 1 to 50 without ever leaving Praetoria, so maybe thats it.

I've seen iTrials start from pretty much every co-op zone possible on Virtue. But the main ones tend to be RWZ, Cimerora and/or the Midnighters Club. They really don't start too often in Pocket D or Studio 55. Maybe the people running trials would rather not get involved with all the RP going on there.

Quote:I still find it strange that obviously elite players such as yourselves still find it hard to understand that not everyone can play this game as well as you can.I'm to the point where, even if I die halfway through and spend some time coming back, I can predict which ones haven't been hit by the time I return.Quote:Sorry to say this but each time I ran the requirements for these badges, when the league entered only one side or the other, we had well over a minute left on the timer when we collected all 10 temps, so yeah it's not hard at all when you have 2 teams rushing the objectives.
I've done it 4 times now and each time was very easy and the teams were normal team makeup no min macing on these runs and all went perfectly fine. All you need is 2 people that know where the objectives are. And by now many should know where they are.
I'm not saying I've personally had any more difficulty with this portion of this trial than you have. But at least I'm willing to accept the likelihood that the people you and I tend to play with are far more experienced with this game than the "average" player.

Quote:While I might agree that the Lambda badge requirements are a bit shortsighted trying to equate this situation to RV Isolator is taking this about 19 steps too far. I realize you were trying to use that as a related example of bad badge requirements, but don't toss in a verbal nuclear bomb where a standard hand grenade will suffice.Actually I think all that proves is whoever designed the Lambda badge requirements didn't care that they were essentially making 3 badges with one requirement. Additionally I think the same "stick it to them" attitude that got us the RV Isolator solution is in play here.

Quote:I think you're getting thrown by your definition of the word sacrosanct. No, we have the opposite stated in the US constitution and letters of the founding fathers.
We have a secular government...or at least we are supposed to... how things work and such is another issue. Holding any religion as sacrosanct causes problems and holding all sacrosanct causes infinitely more. We hold that NO religion or belief is sacrosanct and that no religion is to be promoted or held to be true or false thus allowing each citizen to make up their own mind about their beliefs.
Something being sacrosanct does not mean it's perfect to the exclusion of everything else. It simply means that it is something that shouldn't be questioned or dismissed as false. This is why you can easily have multiple religions all being sacrosanct all at the same time. Sure individual religions might teach that other religions are false, but that's their problem not the other religions'.
So the idea of a secular government allowing for the protection and tolerance of any religion's "sacrosanct-ness" is a perfectly reasonable concept. Like I said it's been working in the United States relatively well for over 200 years now. *shrugs*
Straczynski explored many different aspects of religion both good and bad. I was just making the point that despite his atheism it was actually quite interesting that he was willing to respectfully and seriously cover many religious topics that cast religion in both good and bad lights depending upon the context of the stories. Basically it was arguable that he handled religion in much more mature ways as an atheist than many actual religious people do.Quote:And actually he did put a story in there that shows why religion is bad that people ignore in real life, it's expected they'd ignore it in a fake world too.

Quote:I wouldn't really bother regretting it either. It was a total 100% gamble regardless. They got $40 from me over that. I moved both my Victory hero and villain badgers over to another server (Freedom, maybe? It's been a while...) and back in order to get Power Liberator.

I never really regretted it, but I probably wouldn't do it again. It was, after all, literally a waste of money.
Remember there were several years there where we had absolutely no guarantee there was ever going be any other way to get Power Liberator. No one knew when or if the Devs would ever bring back the CoP Trial at all. So lots of people had to make the choice as to whether it was worth it or not to transfer characters to other servers to take advantage of the last IoP opportunities like Ms. Mesmer mentioned.
In the grand scheme of things I was one of those people who choose NOT to do that. It wasn't really an issue of spending the money - lord knows I've spent far more on much sillier things in my time. The main thing that held me back was my seniority in my SG at the time. I weighed all the pros and cons and at the end of the day I simply choose not to do it. I had no serious delusions or expectations at the time that we would ever get the reworked CoP Trial that we now have. I fully accepted that I would never have Power Liberator at that point.
Now of course as it turned out I and many others got lucky that the Devs did in fact finally give us the reworked CoP Trial. In the long run I traded not having the Power Liberator badge for like 4 years for saving a few dollars in transfer fees. But it's not like I can seriously say I was smarter than you or that I "won" the gamble because again I accepted the very reasonable probability that I'd never have the badge.
All-in-all it was an interesting scenario that could have easily gone either way.

Well Babylon 5 clearly got you to think about quite a few things which is great praise in and of itself. Many TV series are so shallow and pointless that they are forgettable 5 minutes after you watch them, but here you are making in-depth comments about a series that started over 18 years ago now.
Just as an FYI to you J. Michael Straczynski (the guy who created Babylon 5) is an atheist, and a strongly professed one at that. But what's remarkable about that is that he respectfully and dispassionately allowed many of his Babylon 5 characters to have very strong religious foundations and beliefs and never tried to spin his stories towards trying to discredit or belittle anyone who professed religious faith. You may have disliked how the various religious and political elements of the show were handled, but for the time (mid-1990s) it really was groundbreaking. BTW the United States does relatively well allowing people to believe that any religion is "sacrosanct" and still have a functional government for all. If we can do it now then I'd think a bunch of space aliens in the future can do it too.
Like you say there might be better "fully planned out" TV series out there now, but that concept pretty much did not exist before Babylon 5 so we do owe the series credit for that at the very least.
