"By being able to create you own characters, you create your own stories with in the Marvel Universe, with you as the lead character. This is YOUR marvel Universe where you can be more heroic as Captain America or more sinister than Doom. Imagine them look at you with respect or fear as their equal or even their superior. Haven't you had an idea for a superhero, but you couldn't draw? Imagined what powers he would have? Imagine that character come to life and a part of the Marvel adventure!"

I wanted to be clear why Marvel made a mistake with going with a Diablo 3 clone in their new "MMO".
I've always found it interesting, if puzzling, that if you give players a nigh unlimited amount of customization options, there will inevitably be a sizable chunk of people who just try to copy an existing character. You give them the ability to make anything they want, with any name they want, and tell a story where they're the star of the action, and they just go with Ir0n M4n or Wolferine.

I mean, what is that? Is it laziness? Apathy? Is it just too hard for them to put any thought into creating a unique costume?
  2. Man, I love SC4. Wish I could get it to work on my current rig without crashing.

Has anyone else been following the development of SimCity (5)? It's going to have a multiplayer mode to it, maybe we could form a CoH region or something.

I was all set to say that it's not fair to make this kind of judgement before actually trying the game. But then I saw that one of the races is all female...

    Confessions

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I do have secrets. This is hard, but here goes...

I shot JR. And my ancient Chinese secret is Calgon.

I know. I can't even look at myself in the mirror anymore

Does this game get any better? As of right now it's pretty much the same old run & click or shoot quests with random drop loot. Also maybe its my comp but I just find the animations so clunky & jerky that they're annoying. I'm a huge SW fanboy along with the KOTOR games and was hoping for something a little more awe-inspiring I guess....ah well, the trial is unlimited access to lev 15 so maybe the Force classes will be better.

Very spoiled by CoH I think, in terms of animation/Powers & UI there is nothing else quite like it.
The best reason to play TOR is for the various class story lines. The actual mechanics of the gameplay are nothing special or innovative, but the stories are typical Bioware awesomeness.
  7. I would've worked on origin specific story arcs at all levels. Either as individual arcs for each origin, or arcs that branched and changed based on origin (kinda like the Origin of Power arc, but more so). It always bothered me that origins had no meaning outside of what DOs/SOs our characters could equip (which became almost completely meaningless once IOs went live), and I've long thought that unique story arcs would be a good way to fix that.

Well, considering that Leandro says he lives in Argentina but his pin (as of this post) is stuck in northern Brazil, I'd say there are some issues with this particular map service.

  10. In no particular order:

The customization, being able to create a character that feels uniquely yours.

The global friend/chat system, because it made it so easy to maintain connections with people

The Sidekick/Exemplar system, because it made teaming with friends so incredibly easy.

Ourobouros/flashbacks, because I loved being able to revisit some of my favorite content or go back and do things I missed

The community. Even if I never made a lot of friends in game or on the forums, I loved being a part of the City community. You all are irreplaceable, and I don't know what I'm going to do when the forums shut down.

And as a note to the devs:
If you guys find yourselves working for other MMOs in the future, please please please do whatever you can to get them to incorporate sidekicking, globals, and flashbacks into their games. I just find it so exacerbating that these great features of CoH are virtually ignored by damn near every other MMO out there.

If you love to grind, than almost everything in the game can be acquired for free, including Z-Store ships. It depends on how much you like the Trek IP.
Yeah, with the way PW is handling the stuff in the C/Z-Store, you've really got to love the IP to keep playing. I don't mind the store in and of itself, but they seriously need to rethink their pricing on a lot of the new additions.

    • Level syncing, up and down (I think FFXI, does, but...)
    • Ability to do most content either teamed or solo (without making the solo option stupidly tedious)
    • Build flexibility (what if I don't want to make a cookie cutter FOTM?)
    • Team flexibility (not everyone likes the tank/heal/DPS trinity, especially when you have to spend an hour searching for whichever is missing)
Star Trek Online fits those requirements, if Trek is your kind of thing and you don't mind going back to Cryptic.
  13. That's a nice send off, Sorah. I'll have to keep a look out for the finished piece.
  14. Somebody call Jim Butcher. He plays CoH, right? Maybe he can write a really persuasive letter and have them not kill the game. Or he can put the word out to his fans and have them start playing.

Oh, and whoever puts all of the CoH references in Big Bang Theory. Have them do an episode where Sheldon freaks out about the game shutting down.
  15. I play a few other MMOs, but most often go to Star Trek Online. I have fun with it, despite its problems, and I'm a big ol' Trekkie.

If anyone is interested in trying it out when CoH goes dark (or before), feel free to send me a message @Lord_Nightblade and I'll give you the $0.50 tour (parents are visiting through next week, though so I won't be online much). Or you can give a shout in the global channel, CoX (which works across games, so CO players can join as well).
  16. I remember ShoNuff and Lord_of_Time posting tons and tons of interesting articles about gaming, stuff in development, general pop culture and cool sciencey stuff.

I remember the thread about nightmarish work experiences, and L_o_T's stories from Hell. I really miss that one, he had some good ones.
  17. Has anyone been following the development of the next SimCity game? The SimCity franchise is special to me, because it's what got me into gaming. SimCity Societies was a huge disappointment, so when I heard about this one I was excited, at first. Now, I'm not so sure about it.

I have a few concerns, but the main one is that there's not going to be a god-mode terrain editor. One of the things I loved about SC2k, 3k, and 4 was that I could shape the land I wanted to build my city on. The land was just as much a part of the city's character as the roads and houses. Plus, I could use it to make things as easy or as hard as I wanted (ever try managing a medium to large urban community on three small islands? it ain't easy). So there being no terraforming function is extremely disappointing. I think I understand why it wasn't added. The devs of SimCity are touting the online multiplayer aspect of it a lot, and I can see where having the ability to shape the land would potentially screw things up along shared borders. But they're still doing a single-player mode, so I don't see why they couldn't include a terrain editor in that.

I'll probably be waiting for the reviews to come out before I buy it. I really do want it to be good, or at the very least better than Cities XL (which has it's good bits, but isn't as good as SC4). I hope it's at least successful enough to keep the franchise alive.

Yeah, same here. Putting any effort into my characters now just seems so... hollow. I'll probably spend some time playing when the next issue goes live, because I want to check out the Tech Knight and Cosmic Corsair costumes. Other than that, I'll probably let this game wither on the vine.

Oh, good. I'll definitely give that a shot.

You know what? **** it. Let's do it whether they like it or not.

Anyone been playing Secret World? Is there like a friends recruitment program thing going on? Because I'd like to try it before I buy it, and if I can help someone earn some shiny baubles I'd like to.

Also, Sleeping Dogs. Anyone else playing this? Been loving it since I bought it, even though there's not quite as much to do in it as GTA4. I've also noticed that I really feel bad when I kill bystanders. I have no problem with it in GTA, but I really try to limit my collateral damage in Sleeping Dogs. Although I did discover that if you have a gun and you jump out of a vehicle at high speeds, you do this cool backward leaping slide thing that lets you shoot your gun and blow up the vehicle in one shot.
  21. I know I've always been at the outer edge of the community here and despite how long I've played you all don't really know me, but anyone else feel like having a get together in four months when the servers go dark? We could cry on each others' shoulders.
  22. I'm active on and off in STO, do CO one in a blue moon (maybe more now, who knows) and sub to TOR. I've been wanting to give Secret World a shot, so once the game closes and I have some spare subscription money I may check it out.

For me this is less about what games I'm going to be playing than what I'm going to do for an internet community. These were the first forums I ever posted on, and the community here is just... irreplaceable. Even when it seemed like I was more on the periphery of what was going on, I never felt at home anywhere else. I'll probably give the Roosterteeth forums a closer look and maybe become more active there, but it just won't be the same.

    *sigh*

At any rate, I'm still fairly active in STO and we do have a small, but active(ish) fleet for CoH players (or anyone really). It's F2P, so if anyone is interested in playing and you want what meager advice I can give or you want to see what the fleet starbase looks like and possibly join up, feel free to send me a message in game @Lord_Nightblade or (and this is probably the easiest method) give a shout out in the CoX global channel.
