*WOOT*
I feel less twitchy already. Keep lying to me if that is indeed what you're doing -
So when am I suppose to be getting my tails, again?
*twitch* *twitch* -
But in context, what is an Assault set for? And how are Assault sets balanced? Pretty much like all other damage sets, with the weaker quick attacks sooner and the bigger stronger ones later. (not like armor sets or control sets were the bread-n-butter powers are toward the center/beginning)
The question was, 'If Assault sets are to fill/round out the primary, then what do you do when Assault *is* the primary?'
It's basically saying Assault sets are some strange congregation of like-theme powers with no type of consistency or direction meant to only go with a specific type of primary. In context, do you disagree that Assault is just a damage set? Would an Assault set not 'function' if coupled with an armor set? Or a support set? -
Quote:The same thing you do with an AT whose primary is melee? Really, I think you're segregating these mix sets too harshly, as if they're red-headed stepchildren of sets. No, an Assault set is simply a damage set. Just like Melee is a damage set.
If Manipulation/Assault exists to fill in your primary and make you better at what it is your primary does, what do we do with a set that's Assault primary?
Again, as for Manipulation, that's rather confusing because player expectations, tactical approaches and the style of the blaster itself can vary greatly.
Quote:Lemme see if I understand this "survival" concept (regardless of name). As Assault is ranged/melee damage, this would be personal/team defense?
I suggested Blast/survival myself along with probably Melee/survival. Because I really want to play a martial arts-type defender but just tossing melee attack sets onto a defender will just be frustrating. So some buff/debuff along with personal defense might really help. If they combined them into Assault/survival, well, I probably still wouldn't get my MA defender -
Quote:Wow, Sam....that is a mess. You've got attacks separated by single target and AoE? I can't accept that, the nature of the set should dictate if it has ST or AoE. Not to mention it seems just like a blaster but with armor and status protection. It doesn't seem fair, IMO, that it gets such a variety of attacks, shields and status protection. Now if those attacks were confined to one set (the primary or secondary) then what attacks are in those sets can be more easily balanced and regulated but this is just...I don't like it at all...Let's see if I can't recall my write-up off memory. I had the primary balanced like an assault set, but not quite. I think I had three ranged attacks, three melee attacks, Build Up, a utility power and something else I can't recall. Possibly a wildcard power. The secondary I had written up as one cone, one AoE, two shields, one exotic kind of status protection (I'll explain), two or three self-support powers and one wildcard. That would mean...
Let's see. Primary:
1. Power Bolt
2. Energy Punch
3. Power Blast
4. Barrage
5. Build Up
6. Power Push
7. Bone Smasher
8. Power Burst
9. Total Focus
Secondary:
1. Personal Deflection Shield
2. Force Bolt
3. Energy Torrent
4. Personal Insulation Shield
5. Status Protection (I'll explain)
6. Explosive Blast
7. Conserve Power
8. Power Boost
9. Personal Forcefield
When I say "exotic kind of status protection," I mean something akin to what a break free does. It's not a preventative form of status protection, in that you can't turn it on and just ignore status effects, but rather something you used to give you a momentary reprieve from status effects. VERY momentary. Say 10 seconds' worth. If you're permaheld and about to die, you pop this and either cross your fingers that you can kill everything in the next ten seconds, or run like hell before that expires. Give it a recharge time of at least 60 seconds, or even 90 like Build Up, and let the thing be a last resort.
And again, this is off memory. I don't remember how I had it set up originally.
Quote:From what I'm looking at, these power ideas just seem... Not good. The purpose of the Assault/Manipulation set, from what I can tell, is to get more damage out of a primarily ranged character at increased risk. Or, in Assault's case, once you've shut down the risk.
Well, it's my opinion that such sets are simply thematic and used to fulfill the aesthetic concept of the AT. Nothing about specifically providing more damage because, none of those sets have the same amount of damage applied the same way. Ex:
-Ice Manipulation provides little extra dmg but far more control. The set fulfills the thematic concept of Ice and its bag of tricks.
-Devices could provide a crapton of damage in some situations and *no* dmg in others because of the way the dmg is delivered.
-Earth Assault provides practically no ranged dmg. The majority of its dmg is melee but that's because earth powers are not particularly offensive at ranged. Earth's power comes up-close and personal for its dmg.
It's of my opinion that, 'mixed sets' like Assault and Manipulation are simply thematic in make-up and are there to fulfill or complement the AT's concept. Dominators are suppose to be control freaks that will strap you down and skin you alive because they're suppose to be crazy like that, so the AT has melee and ranged attacks coupled with a control set. Blasters...well, alot of people already think their secondaries need fixing, but it's not all about the dmg, it's about playing to your strengths. -
I really should just not respond as I've already said how bent out of shape I get when people ask these types of questions >_>
But to me, you already have the concept for either. So why not just choose the concept you like best?! Just flip a coin or go with the one you feel is less redundant. No matter what I or any of us say, the only person that knows your character best is you... -
Quote:Come on Sam, do I gotta explain it?Erm... I honestly wouldn't call a set with ally-only buffs "Survival," myself. I don't necessarily mind the idea, of course, it's just not my thing.
It's 'survival' but not just your own <_< It's not an 'armor' set because only you can wear the armor which is great for you but does nothing for your allies.
And it wouldn't just be buffs, it'd be whatever is thematic. a 'survival' set with an Ice theme might have the 2 shields plus parts of Ice armor with the dmg auras taken out. It's basically like 'hey, I can cover myself in ice to protect me and I'll do the same for you!'
A dark theme would have some debuffs and maybe the AoE heal.
But yeah, just an idea...
Quote:To give an example, an Energy/Energy such character would probably look like an Energy Assault primary, but without Sniper Blast and probably with Build Up instead of Power Boost, and retain Explosive Blast, Energy Torrent, Temp Invulnerability, Personal Forcefield and probably another bubble or something in that vein. I actually had a full writeup, but I've lost it since.
I'd say post your full writeup. Might as well, right? That's what we're here for.
And just to ammend to my blast/survival AT thought, the epic pools could be melee/pet! So you'd have 3-4 melee attacks with a pet at the end that you could buff and help keep stuff at range. -

As for best way to beat a regen foe in PVE... Pick a set that does the most damage with the most -regen (looks like Dark, Rad can stack it on a bit) and surviveability (again, Dark, Rad look good). As for pee vee pee... No freaking clue, best to look at how to kill a regen scrapper on the pvp boards. -
I suggest a new type of set. In the same vein as Manipulation and Assault sets, I'd be up for a kind of 'Survival' set. A mix of self-protection powers and buffs.
So rather than blast/defense, how about blast/survival (and the reason I'm suggesting this at all, melee/survival). This would automatically limit the relative survival compared to Scrappers and Stalkers as some (half?) of the powers are replaced with ally buffs/foe debuffs and therefore, wouldn't need to sacrifice its damage potential nor directly infringe on the role of ranged dmg dealers (as it has its own niche).
Would it replace corruptors/defenders? No, because some (half?) of the force multiplier powers are replaced with self-protection! -
Sorry, Sam. I get sort of hung up with these sort of posts. More or less, post asking 'what powers combo should I go with' or 'what attack chain should I use' when ultimately those and this can be answered with 'just use what you want'. Neither will disappoint so long as you don't have unnecessarily high expectations.
But to the question of 'which set I would choose for the given concept', I would say either. You want a puncher so punch. If the concept wants some kicks thrown in, pick up Kick from the fighting pool or pick MA. Other than that, why does the decision have to be so complicated? -
This does belong in the AT/powerset section. Your hang-up seems to be with the power level of the sets. MA feels underwhelming to you so apparently that harms your concept. If the punches and effects of SS doesn't ruin your concept and fulfills the desired look and level of effectiveness, then why ask us about it?
Besides that, you short-hand MA's effectiveness. It may not have Footstomp AoE or Rage, but it has superior ST DPS and no rage crashes. All in all, the set is fast and sharply deals with single foes efficiently. It does what it does without relying on anything else. No crashing super buffs or will-probably-be-nerfed-when-proliferation-starts AoEs. On the other hand, MA will probably only ever see buffs.
There's really nothing left to be said. You want SS so use it. No need to go posting long-winded threads that could have been summed up with "Should I go with Ground Punch?" Did you want us to share some of our concepts of either set to compare notes or something? -
np, don't feel dumb, we all have our moments.
Me, an avid stalker player, had sworn up and down that the 'hide timer' was only 6 sec but it's actually 8 sec. -
The *ONLY* thing I'd support of this idea is for a visible energy particle effect to be associated with using the vangard weapons, something that even energy dmg procs do not do.
To clarify, when I slash with my vangard katana, a colored (same as the sword) 'splash' of energy or a tracing energy trail behind the weapon would show instead of the normal sparks. No addition of energy damage.
Why would we need a weapon to do energy dmg in the first place? If you never checked your combat log, you'd probably never know what dmg type an attack did. -
It is a true shadow maul. It's just using the verb version of the word. Shadow Maul sounds better, IMO, than Shadow Beat...
For me, I didn't think anything of the attack from the name. But when I first saw someone else using it I was like "OMG! What was that!?" I still like using that attack. -
Quote:Name these typical situations. Because you don't swing a staff like you would a scythe. And I know, staff and spear are the only weapons I'm good at <_< Just on principal of how the weapon is built defies them being used similarly.Except that typically, a staff IS swung in a similar fashion. The striking point is the end of the staff, not a blade, but it is still the same motion. Traditionally in Western combat, the staff is the only weapon which is used in a similar fashion to Eastern martial arts, where the skill of the user is the primary factor, rather than numbers and formation. Which is why the staff occasionally was used by trained knights, but the spear never was. It was a peasant's weapon, below the nobility.
A spear, as used by a modern martial artist, would be similar to a scythe or pole arm, not ideally suited for one on one combat, but usable as a staff, with the blade on the end as a weapon of opportunity.
If a western style is similar to the eastern ones (the only one I have trained in) then staff/gun is not even close to being used similar to scythe. A chinese spear is even further. I haven't a clue about any kind of poleaxe though but I guess it'd be exactly the same as a 'warscythe' but not a 'scythe scythe'. -
Quote:So what is your issue with that? It's pretty much what I said before, really. And the reason I state that is, for the scythe to retain its 'cool' factor, it must be swung in a fashion that exhibits that blade and really can't be done with animations for a staff or spear. If you can show me an example of it being used otherwise, go ahead. But most scythes I have seen used in combat have been very stylized, with no actual portrayal of how the motion would actually result in the slashing damage shown. It's essentially just a staff with a dramatic accessory stuck on it to satisfy the Rule of Cool.

Quote:SAM! Why do you know this stuff? >_>A pretty decent artist who does a lot of good comic books and a lot of... Unprintable comic books, besides. I'm sure his style doesn't appeal to everyone, but he is definitely one of the better artists out there.
Okay, I've seen some of his more 'erotic' work but I think all that stuff is 'normal' and not 'furry' but yeah, I'm apparently innocent
Also. Decent!? Just decent? Meh, his stuff looks pretty top-notch to me (love nearly all his 'beefcake' stuff ^^) and he had some other action/fighting animations too that were as equally well done as the above example. I could only imagine the effort involved. -
Quote:You see that name by the video title? Yeah, by Fred Perry and that video is old. I played FFXI around the time he played. Kinda popular guy I'd say. He had a FFXI web comic too in that style.Holy... Frikkin... HELL!!! I... I know I'm supposed to comment on the sexy here, but HOLY HELL! That animation is GORGEOUS! Whoever did this buster their *** lip-syncing and smoothing out fluent animations and just... Wow... I'm a sucker for good animation, I really am.
-
Quote:Says who? If you're going to use a scythe like a staff, you might as well break the sickle off.
Since for the most part you are using a pole arm as a staff, just with a "hook" at the end to catch a foe's blade or stab with, it wouldn't be that different.
But the way I see it, a scythe as a weapon is kind of useless...except in over-the-top displays of badassery. In that case, a scythe is a powerful weapon. But you can't look baddA swinging a scythe around like a staff, you need to 'reap'. That is, pull the weapon through the enemy. And the stabbing point is 'waaay' out on the end too.
If scythe were ever made into a 2-handed weapon for this game, it would need different animations. That's the only way to do the weapon comic-justice.
Quote:If they were just now considering putting weapons in the game, I'd say yes, totally. But there's no reason to re-invent the wheel just because you're thinking of making a new car--there's no reason to invalidate the existing powersets because of an opportunity to do things better on a new one. It would lead to a lot of unnecessary work. Not that I'd complain if they went that route; Katana users have pretty limited options for new weapons, and I'd be thrilled to grab some of the Broadsword models and use that set's animations instead.
Not only that, but there are so many possibilities for new effects! I want that 'less crit chance/more crit dmg' effect on polearm set (or any new one that it makes sense for) right now! But it wouldn't make sense on a staff. -
Quote:Really?Yep, throw some Proc's in the T1 and T2 attack and call it good. Heck, In can burn through End just spamming those two attacks, lucky for me she's a Kin.
It's been a while since I played any of my archers, but I don't remember ever being able to run through my endurance with the Aimed and Snap. They're pretty cheap from what I remember...if so, I'd probably run out of foes before I ran out of endurance. -
Quote:I thought you were going to say "I hope one day in the future, we'll have the technology to transfer cookies and other confections over the internet"I hope one day in the future they can make some new zones for CoV with Ultra Mode in mind, like they are for Pratoria. Especially a zone for lvl 7-25.
...but no hugs. No....no.......just no.... -
If that's the route you think is best, they should just revamp all the weapon sets to do that. But instead of some sort of 'swap' power or even just switching dmg type by weapon model, you'd get to customize the set yourself.
You'd pick a mace model and then go to the powers screen and under the melee set, you'd have "Weapon Style". So I could make a mace guy that has a parrying ability and some solid DPS, or a combo-ing mace, or a mace has reduced endurance costs and a 'Focus'/'Shockwave' strike.
So there wouldn't even be multiple weapon sets, just a 'Weapon Set' with differing styles and your choice of smashing or lethal dmg (by what weapon you choose). Of course, there'd have to be some animation work so that each style looked right for their weapon but it's the ultimate multi-weapon custom set where you never have to add another like-set, just weapon models with their animations and possibly new weapon styles when they feel like it.
TLDR; version: If they're going to generalize pole weapons like that, might as well go the whole 9 yards and generalize all weapons. It's the same conceptual result, IMO. -
I think when the devs ever get around to pole sets, they should start out unique to the melee ATs. Start out with 4 different sets and then proliferate them over time.
Scrapper = Staff
Brute = War Hammer
Tanker = Poleaxe/Spear
Stalker = Scythe
Each of those realistically fight in different manners (you definitely don't swing a huge hammer like you would a staff or a spear like a scythe) so would require different animations. Figure out unique styles that take into account their weapons and you've got the pole weapons all covered.
Scythe = lower crit rate, higher crit dmg
Staff = higher crit rate, lower crit dmg
War Hammer = ?
PA/Spear = ? -
Today is a good day to brows the forums ^^

I'm a tad confused now, sorry =S -
Quote:Dang, took my response in the 2nd postThere have been countless threads like this, but I guess people never get tired of talking about powerset proliferation (it is a wonderful thing).
The only powersets I really, really want proliferated:
Ice Melee to Stalkers
Ice Armor to Stalkers
And at some point in the future, I'd really like Shields to be reworked to fit Stalkers, because I love Shields and I love Stalkers, but I can't have them together!
And I suppose I'd like to try Energy Aura on a Tank, too.
Ice stalkers would truly be a beast of a set. People always go on about how weak Ice melee is but it's really not that bad. And then when porting sets like that to Stalkers, they always *add more damage*.
