So it may not end up on the blocked list and at that point all you can do is just hold it if you get lucky enough to snag it because if you log on and play with it, someone will likely report it for the sake of it and it'll get taken from you (and yes, you can often times just grab it again if you're quick enough). There's been plenty of names that has happened to on Virtue this past month.

Of course it COULD be added to the block list as soon as it's let go by the Trial account but that's a maybe, not a guarantee.
They still do that? Silly GMs. We've been telling them for years they need to do a better job maintaining a reserved list so that if they take a name for a reason, they won't have to take it again 5minutes later because it's open season.

Anyway. There's not much point in snagging such an obviously out of bounds name, if you can never play it for fear you'll be caught.
  2. I was pointing out the hyperbole tied to his premise by accepting the premise but pointing out that it couldn't possibly be accurate based on the fact it's been so long since the last time the script was run. I KNOW what he said doesn't make sense because the name was never actually free. That's wasn't the point I was getting at. You had covered it more than adequately. We both agree the premise is moot. I was simply pointing out the ridiculousness of the language used.

I know a lot of people who play in Pinn during those hours. But if you're looking for teammates in broadcast, you kind of deserve what you get if you're not finding anyone.

Cardinal rule of looking for people in this game:
People spend most of their time inside instances. If you're not using a channel they can see and communicate on even inside instances, you don't stand much chance of connecting.

Global Channels and Global Friend lists are your best friends in this game. People are very often willing to switch at the drop of a hat because they're looking for company too. Switching isn't a big deal. Just be sure to stay connected with the people you get along with and share your schedule.
  4. I read it. Thus my use of the word "if" it probably should have been "even if"
  5. Not to be unsympathetic, but if someone managed to snag the name in between the time the last time the script was run and now, your attempts to get it couldn't have been that desperate.

Besides, a 30 second Google search shows me that name belongs to a Marvel character (albeit a minor one). If you ever did get it, you wouldn't keep it, the only reason it isn't on the list of names locked out due to copyright, is it is on an inactive character that hasn't been used since before they started the list.

Edit- Hell, another Google search shows me you're lucky to have Captain Midnight not taken from you. Even for names tied to very old characters, they tend to err on the side of caution.
  6. I think, if I were having trouble summoning interest in playing because of a great big set of byzantine rules I'd set up for my characters, my eureka moment wouldn't be that I'd been doing it on the "wrong" servers.

There's lots of ways to get company to play with you on low pop servers. Deleting all characters there and moving to a high pop one and hoping for the best probably is the least effective.
  7. I was pleased to see Mask of the Phantasm on the list. I don't care where they got the story, or what other story so and so wanted to make, since when you get down to it, more than half the movies made have issues like that. Mask had a much more consistent plot and tone than most live action supermovies I've seen, and I still feel the early years of Batman the Animated Series (culminating in Mask) have some of the best style and art design of any modern American cartoon series.

I wasn't pleased to see so many sequels on the list, particularly since in most of those cases they were weaker films than the originals. Saying Spider Man 2 was better than Spider Man? Just weird.

I wasn't trolling. I answered the question literally because I wasn't in the mood to pick out what you really meant out of hyperbole.

It's not even that I particularly like Freedom. It's that your tone rubbed me the wrong way and I didn't go out of my way to try and figure out what you meant, even though it was probably obvious.

I can make the assumption because it's happened to me in another game. The moment I got the email that they were removing inactive properties from the game world to make room, the game went from maybe I'll go back to see my house on the beach and play some more someday, to never again.

It's not a stretch of the imagination to think people would make the same choice about this game, and think that the devs who decide to make that sort of thing happen should think at least twice about it.

I don't know what it's going to take, probably something very successful and very different. But if it keeps going like this, then there really is no point in even looking at any up-and-coming MMO, because I'm already playing that game now, only with different graphics.
Every major MMO I can think of does to that though. They pick a few design aspects they think they can excel at and make them different. If they hadn't decided to change their enforcement policy about even mentioning other games, I'd give you a detailed list of games and the ways they differ.

But you can't expect each and every game to differ and innovate in all aspects, that's unrealistic. In the end, software is a business. Commerce reward innovation and familiarity equally well, as long as the product isn't so new or so familiar that it seems alien.

Even a Dyson vacuum cleaner is still fundamentally a vacuum cleaner.

It greatly reduces the desire to play other MMOs as well." That perspective goes some way to explain why there's very little sense of genuine playfulness (as the OP observed) in big studios' MMOs these days.
I get that. My point was, I can't buy that the situation is as completely binary as that, nor can I respect someone who is stuck in that mode as an arbiter of what's fun or not fun.

Maybe I'm better at compartmentalizing than the guy's who do this for a living, but I have a very keen eye for good/bad aspects of game design, and it doesn't hinder my ability to have fun in almost any game.

I also have issues with the attitude that he doesn't need to play a game much to get a full picture of it. Even I as a non professional know that games have nuance and a game's community has an effect on the way things go in a game that goes beyond the 1's and 0's of pure design.

In short, I think the attitude he presents is an excuse, not necessarily by him, but any designer who uses it. It perpetuates a Dev / Player divide that doesn't need to exist, and it provides a built in excuse for poor design choices.

  13. I don't particularly need them resorted, but I'd be much happier if that right side were made of collapsible sections that you could shift the display order of at your choosing.

That's kind of the point of bringing up the patch notes. If they did it right and the change propagates to all versions of the NPC that show up, then it will matter less what the recharge is, because even in godmode it will be possible to do some damage to them.

Is the recharge annoying and should it be changed? Yes. However the fact that in a lot of cases those godmodes sent their resistance over the cap is a big factor as well.

In a country where we have troops deployed across the globe in several engagements, and a game where a significant number of our players are active or reserve military, I find the arbitrary 3 month deadline to be incredibly selfish and inconsiderate.

You're all operating under the presumption that the devs haven't run the script because they're lazy or forgetful, and that people who stop playing are doing it for simply personal reasons. There's people in America displaced by disaster or deployment or unemployment for years before they get back in a stable situation with enough free time to warrant a subscription. Just because we're lucky enough to be able to pay and play doesn't mean we love the game more than them and automatically deserve preference.

Yes paying customers do deserve more than nonpaying. But trying to make that case while casting the people who can't play in a less favorable light doesn't make your point. It just makes it seem selfish.

Figure out the average length of deployment. Add two months. That's a much more reasonable number for running the name script than 4 times a year.
  17. Welcome to the world of computer software. When we fire up certain programs, we expect certain things. Word Processors have spellcheck and style controls. Spreadsheets have standard calculation formulae. 1st person shooters have a variety of weapons, maps and multiplayer options. MMOs have a mix of PvE, PvP, and the requisite tools in place so players can find, communicate, and interact with each other.

I'm having a hard time seeing exactly what your issue is, unless you're saying the learning curve is too steep? To that I say, in every MMO I've tried, they never dump everything on you at level 1 unless they make clear what topics are advanced and what are basic, and give you the option to put things off until later when you're ready to learn them.

I wouldn't claim every building made of bricks is the same just because they all have bricks, and I don't see how you can say all MMOs are the same because most of them use common tools. It's how those tools are applied and intermingled that makes a good game.

Oh yeah, water is wet too.
  18. This is why all his robots are programmed to like pie.
  19. Not without a second bind/macro to tell it to do that.

In order to do something like that on a single key/button you'd need to get creative with bindfiles

Not really, since when people complain about it they too often resort to hyperbole and blatant exaggeration instead of trying to come up with solid reasons. Even when the devs do things we clearly want, they have to have solid reasons for it.

Running the script because it's been a long time and people are complaining in highly dramatic (but inaccurate) language on the forums doesn't qualify.

    Redside Power

This is a game where people spend 90% or more of their time in instances. Without you explaining how you look for people, we can't tell you why it seems dead.

I ran 2 treespecs back to back with nearly entirely different groups of people last night around 1am. and no, I don't play on Freedom.

  25. Stupid long old school MoG, I dunno about recharge, we've always been able to kill her when it goes down. But she is one of the ones being capped, so its possible we will be able to kill her during MoG, even if we mess up the escape we've been using.
