    Laptop advice

    Faster: Asus G53SW http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230027

    Even Faster: Asus G74SX http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...CE1N20T6E90JRR or http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230103

    Fastest: Sager NP7282 http://www.xoticpc.com/sager-np7282-...00-p-2881.html

Chuckers is talking about the predecessor of the G74SX, which is likely the G73SW or G73JW. The G73SW is out right now: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834230028 Just note that it's nearly identical to the G53SW, except in a 17" fashion, whereas the G53 is 15.6".

The Asus ones tend to be cold, even for a gaming laptop. The Sager? Can't tell, never seen that one yet in real life. But the Sager one is abnormally fast. When I mean abnormally, I mean it's like desktop performance fast.

Unfortunately, I have issues with CoX freezing with 270.61. Have a GTX 570. Only happens on the GTX 570. Doesn't happen with the GTX 275, I believe.

Need to see if the 275.33 works well, but I rolled back to the 266.58.

Or if you mean 'City Of Heroes' for gaming, then I think it's going to do alright. I just want to be able to play my older games, Fallout 3, Co*, etc., at a good to very good clip. If I can make this processor last as long as my old one, I'll be ecstatic.

For $600, I'm quite happy with this build.

Shame. Unless, of course, it's a bad PC port, then I can understand that.

Oh boy. This excuse has gone wafer thin over the years, imo.

Well, I can't disagree with that. But Steam definitely does not go into the asinine territory.

If you were gonna go for an AMD Processor, you might have been better off with a 955BE. Those extra two cores on the 1100T might not do much.

The other predicament is the upgrade path, provided if you even consider it. The current AMD line-up is at a complete dead-end, unfortunately.

But no matter. It's better, by far, than that Pentium 4.

Oh yeah, the Corsair PSU, I believe, is better. Don't judge by wattage, at all.
In fact, this might have been good enough: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-020-_-Product

Really depends also on the video card power requirements.

But this might have been all in hindsight, considering it's been more than a week.
  4. Better off with an i3-2100 than any AMD processor right now, at least for gaming. No AMD processor at this moment is worth it for gaming.

I have benchmarks to prove my point. And for the same price as the 1100T, you could get an i5-2400.

But I think it's too late. I didn't see this thread until now. Think you jumped the gun a little bit too soon.

    @Arda
Unfortunately, I know nothing of SLI settings, as I tend to avoid dual card configurations unless it's some sort of upgrade. As for settings, I usually just turn down Ambient Occlusion and sometimes shadows. Really depends on CPU and GPU dependency. Unfortunately, I'm at GPU dependency instead of CPU, as I always see my GPU at 90-97% load, unlike my CPU which is at 15-25%. Before my CPU upgrade (from a dual core E8400 clocked at 3.8GHz to an Quad-Core and Hyperthreaded i7-950 clocked at 3.8GHz), it was at 95-100% CPU load.

The only Nvidia control panel settings I DO have changed that affects significant performance is Threaded Optimization, and I have that at Off. If it's On, I lose quite a bit of performance. Well, that was on the E8400. I haven't tested it on i7-950.
  6. So, good improvement over the 260.99? Currently have 260.99 with a GTX 275 and have nearly no problems. Nearly.

If it's overheating I'm really not sure what I'm going to do about it, there are more fans in this case than any other I've ever built. =(
Two cards in SLI with 1024MB = 1024MB available video memory. It does not double. It's similar to RAID-1 systems, where the Hard drive is mirrored, so if there's 2 1TB hard drives, it's not 2TBs, it's still 1TB, but with some performance bonuses, kind of.

Shared System memory does something else unless it's some IGP, which isn't the case. I mean, on DXDiag for mine, it says like 2800 MB, but I'm pretty sure it only uses 896 MB(GTX 275, default is 896MB of dedicated memory). And 32xAA? It can use huge amounts. Perhaps more than 2GB of video memory. But I wouldn't know, because I never tried it, nor would I want to, nor am I able to. Anything more than 8x seems like a waste of performance, with no real gain on image quality, personally. I mean sure, your fences may look awesome, or those damn tree branches or power lines, but I really don't care for that much drop in performance for a small amount of specific quality. Of course, CoH is weird on AA performance and quality.

But yes, turn down ambient occlusion, turn down AA. Don't put it on supersampling, multisampling at best if you must do it through Nvidia control panel.

My other recommendation? Disable SLI. I honestly don't know what the good settings for CoH with SLI, but I do remember that it does have support for it. If not disabling it, then change some settings?

    My god, turn that DOOOOOOWN.

Maximizing AO to the fullest makes your FPS drop to 10%. If you put medium instead of strong Occlusion Strength, it should make it go like 2-4x the FPS you currently have. Turn the resolution down too.

Edit2: And... while playing with various levels of FSAA, my client suddenly froze with a popup about my graphics configuration not meeting the minimum requirements to run the application.
Chances are your GPU overheated, or there isn't enough video memory to support it due to 32x AA plus that ambient occlusion. Honestly, if you game at like 1920x1200 (or similar) you shouldn't need more than 4x. At least I don't, unless it's a big monitor, like a 32 in at less than 4 feet away.

Honestly, Ambient occlusion, no matter what the game, is going to hog massive amount of performance. CoH just happens to have different types of AO, but most games don't have the super high option that CoH has.
  10. Sorry to say this in case you've already done it:
Installed the proper drivers? All of the drivers, chipset, graphics, network, etc.
Installed proper updates to Windows 7?

These are the only things I can think of. Unfortunately, I'm not too familiar with Bootcamping or anything Apple related, honestly (i don't even have iTunes or an iPod). I'm only assuming due to the fact that it's an Intel motherboard (or rather, Foxconn, perhaps) with an Intel Processor and an Nvidia graphics card that it should be nearly identical to a PC.
  11. My recommendation is to install the 64-bit version. 64-bit nowadays is fairly mature, and Vista 64 was basically the largest transition towards 64-bit compatibility. This does not mean every program out there runs at 64-bit. Most programs run at 32-bit, but is compatible with a 64-bit OS simply due to the drivers. At the beginning of Vista, 64-bit was largely new and drivers were not always available for 64-bit. Nowadays it is common for newer hardware to supply 64-bit drivers for both Vista and Windows 7.

Personally, I don't have a problem with CoH, having ran it on Vista x64 and Windows 7 x64.

If you must know, that other superhero MMO with crappy character customization is 30GBs.
  13. Nah, this has been a general occurrence forever, though it usually happens due to lack of maintenance done on the servers. I mean seriously, when's the last time maintenance happened?
  14. Yeah, I get this in certain Tip missions.

I think certain servers need a maintenance round.

What server are you on? I'm on Virtue, getting this so far on Hero Tip missions in Atlas. Two of them so far.

Hmm, I think I forgot to factor in Fire ammo with Empty Clips. Bleh.

Actually, comparing empty clips to other cones, Empty Clips is quite inferior, though not overly significantly. I think I prefer buckshot over Empty Clips were it not for the animation.

As for balance, sure, if you call aesthetics as a part of balance.
  18. Honestly, DP could be much better. The long animations and a certain mediocre power are my main complaints. Specifically? I hate empty clips simply due to the small cone and range and puny damage. I only took it due to the inherent fitness, otherwise would have simply abandoned it. A minor complaint is swap ammo. It just does not give good enough benefits other than perhaps fire and normal ammo, at least for a blaster. It would have been nice if the chem ammo was something other than damage reduction, otherwise I never ever use it.

It would have also been nice to have HoB at a shorter recharge if not the same recharge as RoA or Full Auto. In fact, I think HoB at a shorter recharge would just make the set more than worthwhile, at least for me.

Of course this is just repeating every one elses' complaints.

Though I wish there were machine pistols (other than Uzi) or SMGs for alternate weapons.

In a team, it's fairly nice, though of course I'd get better results on a fire blaster, but I really should not have to say that.

So you don't have to read the entire article I'll sumarize: if it was an issue from the bios flash I would more likely see lockups, tearing, and other graphical artifacts. As I'm not, this is more likely a driver issue, or something in the CoH code preventing preatoria from using the GPU properly.

To humor you -since it's easy as AMD includes dual bios in their cards now - I'll flick the switch and report the difference.

So, with the 6950 bios, as I've turned off 10% of the shaders and reduced the core clocks, I'm seeing:
25 FPS at 70% GPU with 95% CPU in normal zones
10 FPS at 40% GPU with 95% CPU in preatoria

Pretty much the exact same situation whether I have all 1536 shader units from a HD6970 turned on, or just the 1408 of an HD6950.

So, there is something else going on in Preatoria that's preventing my GPU from doing the work instead of my CPU.

    _WAter_
Yes, well, an E6700 will go full load no matter what the speed is unless it's like 4 or more GHz. I had an E8400 OCed to 3.8GHz and went full load all the time in CoH. With the i7 950 at 3.6GHz, barely 20%.

As for GPU, depends what settings, with either the E8400 or i7 950. If it's near max, with all the shadows and Ambient Occlusion, it would go to 90-95% GPU Load. If those were lowered or off, it would drop significantly.

Since you are running at near full graphics anyways, I wouldn't know. Note that I was using a GTX 275 for this, and not an ATI card. Last time I used an ATI card was an X1900XTX and back then ATI ran horrid on CoH. I am only noting my experience as reference and just to give you an idea.

You are also likely CPU bottlenecked, which is no surprise. CoH is more of a CPU dependent game, especially pre-ultra mode. Now with Ultra mode it's utilizing more of the GPU. Back before Ultra Mode, my GPU would barely reach 40% GPU Load with an E8400 @ 3.6 or 3.8 GHz.
  20. If you are going to buy a pre-built one, try this:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16883229190
If you don't mind mail-in rebates, it's actually cheaper. It's also faster, CPU-wise.

As for Pugetsystems, good, but overpriced. They do the same thing as cyberpowerpc and ibuypower, but may have better customer support than the other two.

Now that I'm browsing through Pugetsystems, their prices... are atrociously overpriced. I mean... $90 bucks on that Asetek Liquid cooling system when it costs around $70 on a Corsair H50 which is actually the exact same thing except it's not called Asetek? Add 431 dollars for a 6970 over a GT210 when a Radeon 6970 costs 370 dollars on newegg? At least the hard drive prices were reasonable. Almost. The Tuniq TX-4 thermal paste costs like 6 bucks for a whole tube, which can basically be used for like 3-5 uses, but they are charging you for single use. That Asus 25.5 Monitor they list? It's less than 300 bucks on newegg while it's 400 on pugetsystems. You might as well buy the monitor separately. Well, I also recommend that when choosing your system if buying from ibuypower or cyberpowerpc. But yes, at least ibuypower and cyberpowerpc have more reasonable prices with a more modest "assembly charge" added on to the parts, but of course sacrificing the customer service part.

Honestly, the prices almost gave me an aneurysm. Though I think FalconNW is the worst offender for that. Sigh, and this is why people keep saying that gaming on a PC is expensive... when it's not that expensive or shouldn't be that expensive.
  22. If you must buy a customized pre-built computer, my only recommendations are ibuypower.com and cyberpowerpc.com. No, I haven't really bought from them. As far as I know, their customer support is very mediocre, but otherwise the computers are cheap. My recommendation is research the parts from the list. These two sites basically just buy parts from certain manufacturers which are certainly easily acquired through newegg (not that they get them from newegg) and just assemble them.

And no. HELL NO to Geek Squad. That's possibly worse than Alienware. They are merely part-time salesmen posing as technologically literate geeks.

Personally, I build my own computers, and mine looks better than the Alienware cases anyways. And Customer support? I call myself. Only problem is that other people ask me to fix their computers especially when I built it for them.
  23. Unfortunately, this is normal. At least for CoH. The only way I can tell you to lower the temperature is to use software to manage the fan control on the card and push it up beyond 40%, to like 60-75%.
  24. Someone please do a benchmark. I'd like to see if there's more than a 50% improvement over one card. As much as I think SLI is a gimmick, I'd still like to see SLI be supported on more MMOs.

Oh and when is CoH Physx going to switch from Ageia to Nvidia? Seriously.

Here you go, have fun. It's under $1500, but near it.

As for maximum Ultra mode... uh... I actually have no clue what laptop can do that.

Maybe these: http://www.sagernotebook.com/index.p...selected_cat=2 ? Except for the last one (NP7130).

As for $1500 dollar Desktop (No monitor, 1 basic fairly high capacity hard drive, and no Keyboard or mouse or speakers or whatever the hell, just the tower itself), possibly.

In fact, let me check... Yes you can... if you build it yourself. It will in fact, max it, most likely.
