Try reducing the Ambient Resolution for Ambient Occlusion down to High Performance. That option any higher kills performance for absolutely no image improvement.

With everything maxed: About 7-8 FPS.
With just FSAA off: 9-11 FPS.
With just AO at High Quality: 9-11 FPS.
With AO at High Quality and FSAA off: 14-16 FPS.
No difference on any of those between 0 and 16x AF.
These values are all in Steel Canyon.
Edit: Reading comprehension failure. High performance =/= High quality.
At High Performance I'm seeing ~30 with FSAA off, ~20 at 32x.
Edit2: And... while playing with various levels of FSAA, my client suddenly froze with a popup about my graphics configuration not meeting the minimum requirements to run the application.

did you update your Nvidia drivers to the latest version?
or are you using the Nvidia drivers that came with the computer?

Maximizing AO to the fullest makes your FPS drop to 10%. If you put medium instead of strong Occlusion Strength, it should make it go like 2-4x the FPS you currently have. Turn the resolution down too.

Honestly, Ambient occlusion, no matter what the game, is going to hog massive amount of performance. CoH just happens to have different types of AO, but most games don't have the super high option that CoH has.

I would be nothing short of dumbfounded if it was due to a lack of video memory since the rig is running two cards with 1024MB each and the shared system memory is another 2048. Shared System memory does something else unless it's some IGP, which isn't the case. I mean, on DXDiag for mine, it says like 2800 MB, but I'm pretty sure it only uses 896 MB(GTX 275, default is 896MB of dedicated memory). And 32xAA? It can use huge amounts. Perhaps more than 2GB of video memory. But I wouldn't know, because I never tried it, nor would I want to, nor am I able to. Anything more than 8x seems like a waste of performance, with no real gain on image quality, personally. I mean sure, your fences may look awesome, or those damn tree branches or power lines, but I really don't care for that much drop in performance for a small amount of specific quality. Of course, CoH is weird on AA performance and quality.
But yes, turn down ambient occlusion, turn down AA. Don't put it on supersampling, multisampling at best if you must do it through Nvidia control panel.
My other recommendation? Disable SLI. I honestly don't know what the good settings for CoH with SLI, but I do remember that it does have support for it. If not disabling it, then change some settings?
What kind of frame rate do you get with "Advanced Graphics Settings" disabled and "Graphics Quality" set to Ultra?
Extremely high FSAA settings (above 4x) and Ambient Occlusion put the most load on the GPU. The higher shadow settings, higher water effects, and higher Environmental Reflections put lots of load on both the GPU and CPU. Also, the World Detail (and to a much lesser degree, the Character Detail) will affect both the CPU and GPU load (probably more on the CPU than GPU).
A couple of more notes: make sure you hit "Apply Now" after making changes and also make sure you close the settings window before looking at your frame rate. Having the graphics settings window open can reduce your frame rate.
Hey guys.
Build a new desktop PC recently as my old one was damaged by a roommate who decided that as compensation he would buy it from me and fix it.
Decided that I would get a little crazy (I bought all the parts during Newegg's Black Friday sale and got pretty incredible deals, it's not 100% top of the line, but it's a ton of bang for what I paid).
I was expecting at least decent performance out of it for COX, even maxed out, at 1920x1080 resolution, based on the performance noted in the ultra mode thread here on an older card and before SLI was functional, even, but I am getting 7-10 FPS in Steel Canyon and haven't even bothered to try CoV or GR zones as a result.
The relevant specs are:
3.2GHz 6 core CPU
2x GeForce 460 GTX 1GB video RAM GPU SLI configured
16GB RAM
I updated my video drivers tonight and saw about a 2 FPS improvement.
Really left scratching my head as to what else to do. Is this actually expected performance for these specs? It seems odd to think that you would literally need a 500 series card to get reasonable framerates for maxed ultra mode since they didn't even exist when it came out.
