Well, we'd definitely get lots of hats
Of all the publishers out there, Valve is certainly a lot better than the alternatives (imagine EA taking over! congrats, endurance will now have to be purchased from the Origin store!) -
-
A focus on PVP wouldn't have saved the game. At best, it'd increased the playerbase a bit (at worst, it'd have alienated a large portion of the existing base), but certainly not enough to counter any of the theories as to why CoH got the shaft.

It's red in the thread, gold when on the thread list.

In case this isn't a joke thread, NCSoft yesterday announced that City of Heroes is being shut down. The Development team has already been disbanded, the store is supposed to have been disabled, and the servers will be shut down on November 30th.
-
"Is that serious???"
Love it. -
That, we don't know
One of the devs (Positron, IIRC) is planning on having a reveal all event where he/they basically just answer our questions about the lore sometime next week (Wednesday, I think?). -
Is there any possibility that the War Walls could be disabled? I mean the part that prevents us from leaving, so we could look outside, at the bits of the city that we never actually get to see.
Back when Cimerora first came about, there were a ton of holes in the geometry (that were patched quite quickly!), and I slipped a few characters outside. I still have an Elec/Nrg Blaster with recall sitting out there, at the top of the building Nictus Rommy is at. It was a load of fun flying around the giant mountains!
Probably not practical, but would be nifty! -
Quote:Personally, I've never cared for the supers theme (not that I actively disliked it). It's just that the supers theme allowed the Devs to span a massive number of genres. In other MMOs, you basically just end up with one very strict subset of one genre (9 times out of 10, elves in woods with swords and magic fireballs), while in CoH you have everything from a secret magic using society that lives underground to people that have augmented themselves with all sorts of random technology and love partying/destruction. They were able to span a wide variety of genres, never being confined. They also had a damn good powers system (I don't wanna use 'magical bolt' for 5 levels, and just replace it with 'magical bolt II'... and then repeat till the cap! or just replace it with a totally different power and might as well delete it!). There's many other things they got right from the start, or realized over time (such as travel time is NOT a good thing). There's also the painfully obvious things like the costume creator, and not having look in and way tied to abilities/stats.Shut up and take my money. And as others have mentioned, I'd happily also contribute to a separate IP with familiar Devs and hero/villain themes if, as is likely, the opportunity to purchase/license the current IP isn't an option.
If the Devs go to other projects and can bring some of the things that made CoH awesome, the things that so many MMOs do not get right... I'd definitely be interested. I'd love to hear that some of them get together and start their own new MMO (or any type of game, really) from scratch, with what they've learned from CoH. Yep, our Devs are awesome. -
hmm... Once CoH closes, I'll probably need to pull City Status off the AppStore... but once/if the Titan Network can manage to launch anything, I'll definitely have it ready to push back out.
I wanna release a new version, so you better pull it off -

I doubt NCSoft is listening at this point to suggestions. They've never been ones to try to keep a game around (they kill MMOs, while most other companies just push them into maintenance mode).
Positron is doing a big 'reveal all' event, next week I believe. I thought he posted about it on his Twitter, but I just checked and don't see it (someone else posted about it). I'm not sure if there'll be able to put out any concept art or anything, but hopefully we'll get lots of juicy info about what was down the line. -

pps. Can we keep City of Heroes if I give back the three Dark Matter codes I snagged when the thread with 'em was posted?
-
Thank you (and the other reps, all the ones over there years... and the Devs, and everyone else) for all your hard work!
ps. I forgive you for not randomly selecting me for the Dark Matter codes on Freedom/Virtue during the Shark Week event!<3

I don't think any of my suggestions made it into the game (likely a good thing
), although I did do the original documentation for the Cyborg Super Booster. I got a couple PMs from red names from that thread, including one that implied my screen shots were horrible (aaaannndddd... he was right, so I redid them all without a puke-worthy color scheme
). Some of the videos I posted highlighting various power customization changes were used as part of an Massively (I think that's the one?) overview video... you can even see my EM/Nin Stalker running around with recolored pompoms!

Quote:Is there no possibility of it being both?I'm curious, do you actually believe we're standing in a line or were you unable to come up with with rebuttal that made sense? Because the former implies that you are more mentally insane than I am, and the latter implies that you have no cognitive function whatsoever.

I was planning on starting regularly watching your Coffee Talks with this next one (having watched this last one a bit after it was done). I enjoyed it quite a bit, and was greatly amused when someone started raining down the meteors
Plus, the bacon.
You guys will definitely be missed. Plus, your hat. Your hat will be missed as well, quite possibly the most of all. Keep it safe, and cherish it, as if it was your own hat. -
It seems like if there's anyone in the community in the right position to spearhead something like this, it's definitely you. I'll definitely be watching to see what develops.

NCSoft would own the IP, seeing as they owned Paragon Studios.
Positron might talk about it in the 'reveal all' event he's setting up (or maybe he can't). -
You never know! Maybe the reps still have one last trick up their sleeve and can show off some of whatever work they had finished of the Battalion as part of the final event. I hope we all get slaughtered mercilessly!

Quote:I'm afraid this is most likely the case. I doubt we'll see any patches from here to lights out, regardless of the size. If there's enough deployment-related people around, they might be able to pull something like that off (to hell with Q&A at this point and all that- maybe).but if its beyond the capabilitiys of the remaining staff to code up into a live server I totally understand.
Personally? I'm planning on transferring my 'current' (and I guess last) main over to Beta and running through that content solo. Assuming Beta doesn't get shut down early -
Sadly, it would be a massive amount of work. Without seeing the code/poking it myself, I can only guess exactly where the divide is, but AI is definitely handled server side (including pets), but quite likely a huge percentage of the code related to combat as well.
It wouldn't be an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. -
