no matter what game you play, you'll never escape it.
[/ QUOTE ]
But I've played games where the first 20 levels weren't soul-sucking tedium. Of course, in those games the game tended to get tedious after those levels. Surely someone, somewhere will get it right and make a game that's generally fun from level 1 to whatever the maximum level is. Or at least not an exercise in soul-sucking tedium along the way.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think the first 20 levels weren't a soul-sucking tedium the FIRST time i did it... maybe not even the second...
I'm currently running the first 20 levels for about the 30th time... >.> And, IMO, that's kind of CoX's double edged sword.
On the one side... i've NEVER played a game with this much customsion so that I could even think up 30 different personalities and builds and play them. At this point in time, hero building is more importent to me then anything else in this game.
But on the other hand, my goodness, it gets really REALLY, *REALLY* old after a while. And there isn't all that much motovation to play your guys after 50. That's why i have so many... I don't really use my 50's all that much outside of a few STF's/LRSF here and there. Or unless a tf i'm on needs something to really work. Other then that, I hit 50, i start a new project. PvP is a bust for me, Raiding the Hammi is an annoying lag fest... and MA's kind of a joke IMO. It's not my style of fun to write and make the stuff, I tried one, and published one story arch. took weeks... was a pain in the butt for me to spell and grammer check properly, as is rather evident... and after ALL that hard work, 5 people have played it... one of which was my brother... so weeks of work, for 4 dudes to check out... nah, screw it, im not that creative anyways. And honestly, i'm not alone in that reguard... >.> I haven't played all that many stories in MA that's blown my mind... like, 1 so far. Maybe 2.
So there it is. I love making alts, I just don't always love playing them too 50... >.> We need new, intresting, stuff to do in the lower levels. I'm sorry, MA isn't cutting it. The quality is lacking, as is excpected, I mean, creative and talanted are rare, that's why we all aren't playwrites or rock stars, or some such.
And besides, even though Posi laid down the law... people still farm the crap out of it... so even getting a content team running is like pulling teeth..
MA = fail. Give us some real lowbiee content so making alts isn't so painful. -

powerforge is working on a fm/sr brute, and his attack chain is incinerate-cremate-fs. that's all. he has breath of fire and fire sword circle for aoe's and isnt taking gloom
[/ QUOTE ]There's 40% global recharge difference between /SR and /Stone.

Only 40%?
[/ QUOTE ]Oh, my. I just looked at Granite's full info there.
Amend my prior post to 85% then. Didn't realize Granite was that much of a debuff. Definitely makes my decision to delete my Stone tanker much less heartbreaking now.
[/ QUOTE ]
?! Granite should be a 65% recharge debuff.

I think he's adding in the +20 from SR's quickness. -

And THAT is why i've never bothered making one.
My Invlun/SS and WP/BA are tough enough to tank nearly anything a Granite can, with a few exceptions. I may need to lean on my team a bit more for support then a granite, but it's a small price to pay to be able to MOVE. >.<
My brutes... well, i don't think they can hold a candle to a well built Stone brute. (Fire/Invlun, and Elec/SR) Neither one are what i'd consdier "tankish" brutes. They emulite scrappers for the most part. For this reason, I've often considered trying a /Stone brute, as i like to try and have a hero/villian that can fill all possible team rolls. (tanking, buffing, debuffing, dmg, control, and healing.) Heros, i have all my bases covered pretty good, but on villians, i'm lacking a real sturdy meat shield.
I'm thinking of fixing this when GR comes out... and porting over a fire/DM tank... yeah yeah, a pretty weak tank by convinsonal standers, but, I think he'd make a passable villain tank. -

Yup. Technology or Magic origins are the way to go with /TA. Honestly, those are the origins that make the most sense for the set, anyway. Other than maybe Natural.
[/ QUOTE ]
Of course, if your a TA/Sonic who cares what origin you are? You can use an aoe to ignite oil slick.
[/ QUOTE ]
And if your like me, a Plant/TA who's a mutant... you can... eh... use... hmm... your SOL till 41 and fireblast...
Eh, what can you do? LOL. still IMO my most wickdly fun controller to play out of the 5 I have. -
I've never had it happen to ME, and I'm not really sure how i'd handle it...
I mean, when I'm a kin, and someone asks for no SB, i respect that as best i can. Sometimes i get cought up in my buff cycle and he gets buffed... ops. Sometimes i hit SB instead of syphone speed, and, suprise suprise, the mob was targeting him... ops... or, sometimes i just forget... my bad... i never do it out of spite, but have been accused of it... and chew out many times. It leaves me a tad unsympathitc to people honestly, i appoligies, i admit i made a mistake, but it's not enough apperently. anyway, mini rant over, i try as a kin to respec there wishes, even inspite of some of their mistreatment.
on my thermal, once i learned my shields accually screw with peoples frame rates and hurt there game play signifiently, i when to great lenghts to respect there wishes, but again, i'm human, and apperently i suck, so mistakes happen... again, i try my best to accomidate...
but bubbles, bubbles were my safe haven... no one EVER complained... and I didn't get my head bitten off. and honestly, i have a hard time foressing a vaild complaint for my buffs... If people start... I may snap...no really... it's one thing to complain " I can't handle the speed..." ok, i can understand that... or "it screw up my frame rates and i can see crap." that ones pretty darn valid... but "dude, green so clashes with meh tights... no more please..."
....
And then asking me to turn MY buff off too?
...
Depending on my mood and how long it had been since someone had last chewed me out for buffing them on accdent... my respeonc would range from a miled "say what???" to a 3 day suspinsion...
Anyways, i'm glad i haven't found this to be a problem for me. heh.
And in all honesty, i have lately had anyone requesting no buffing in general... and it's been months since the last time someone rode my backside for having a human moment on my kin or thermal. -
Since i'm getting the feeling the build up prog isn't bugged anymore, or i was confused and it was never bugged, i've been retolling my build and have found an extra 2 slots, so i can 6 slot him. I dropped my single target immob... who needs it. LOL. I mainly took it cause I was running out of earth or fire powers i could take, and i try never to brake concept if i can. I can use them two extra slots, as it was only 3 slotted, (HO acc/mezz's) move them to poo man, and take assult in it's place... cause.. well, its good out of the box with just one slot, and it'll add damage to me and my pet... and isn't concept braking..
So, 3 HO/Dmg/Acc's 2 resistsIO's and the Build up prog it is... just need to get the IO's now... time to shop. LOL.
Thanks guys
Oh wait, one more question. This build up proc, does it effect me or him? Does he get the build up or do I? -
My Stone pet, i have 3 Acc/Dmg HO's ready for it. I have one slot left over in my build... i was thinking of adding it to him and putten a prog in it. At first i was thinking of the knockback one for more dmg... but, only one of his attacks does knockback... so, does that mean it's the only attack that'll try and prog?
If so, maybe the resistince IO... heck, if i can scroung up another slot, maybe both... hmm..
Think it'd be helpful? More helpful then dmg? overkill and a waste of money?
Thanks in advance! -

But it's not for a noob IMO.
[/ QUOTE ]
Exactly. A noob refuses to learn, a newbie will learn though. The OP specifically asked for one that's good for learning the AT with. And the best way to learn a class is to be challenged and forced to learn.
Your first was a merc/poison. And you kept going because you refused to admit defeat. Now, in hind sight are you glad you started with a challenging combo? Or do you think you'd have learned as much about playing a mastermind if you'd gone with a easy combo which barely requires effort such as bots/force field? /poison is a great secondary to learn masterminds with because it forces you to learn what your doing. It's a case of learn or die frequently.
[/ QUOTE ]
In all honesty, i was thinking pretty much the same thing you just said as i was typing up my reply... cause I am kind of thankful i started with a harder build... forced to me learn how to make and manage macros, something i've taken into OTHER at's to great effect... much like playing my first ever hero was a Gravity/Kin, and THAT made me work back then too...
I suppose I took the OP's question to be, "that's a good starter MM" to mean, what's a good "easy" mm to play... and that's how i answered it. heh.
In that vain, if your looking for a build that'll challange you and force you to think and learn... /posion is a GREAT secondary... or maybe /TA.. i've been thinking about making a 4th MM myself with /TA, cause i like the secondary so much on my troller... pick any primary. -
My first MM was a Merc/Posion. And it wasn't IMO "noob" friendly. LOL. I hated it... I only leveled him out of shear stubbereness. I didn't want the game to DEFEAT me cause i was having issues learning to play a Char i had a CONCEPT for. I didn't want to change his concept, and i didn't want to admit defeat, so... I keep going, and he really leveled out and got pretty fun in the later levels. Now, at 50, I love him. He's got a -res prog in each pet... plus his own debuffs... i make mince meat out of stuff.
But it's not for a noob IMO.
My easiest MM from start to finish was my Bot/Dark. The difference was jaring. Very easy, very powerful... very few headachs... NOTHING like my first one. I'd start there IMO.
My Thugs/Pain IMO is my "BEST", as far as teaming goes. It's not as easy as the Bot/Dark, nor does it have the raw firepower, but it's better team support with great damage. I'd recommend it too. -
[ QUOTE ]
I have a level 9 Earth/Fire, and it beats my non-existent Plant/Fire Dom, hands down.
Okay, okay ... Sorry I can't give you a comparison, but i can tell you that Quicksand just plain rocks. Can't wait for Stalagmites with its AoE Stun to stack on top of it. Then Combustion, and Fireball on top of that! HahHA!!!!
[/ QUOTE ]
Where are you picking up fireBALL? Fireblast, yes, fireball, not so much. It'd be too awsome. Firebreath works pretty good along with combustion i've found for some decent aoe damage.
As for plant over earth or earth over plant. I've got a Plant/TA troller, and my own earth/fire dom. control wise, I think earth has the edge, not a HUGE edge, but an edge none the less, and plant gets more damage with Creapers. Earth has a better pet IMO, better dmg and can tank a bit. at the end of the day, honestly, either will work pretty well.
personally, i'd pick plant for the visuals... i think plant looks better... but earth's pet, dispite looking like a big pile of.. well, he's pretty awsome, and the control is seconded to none.
Eh, it's a wash IMO. Pick the one you think looks the coolest, and you'll prolly be happy. heh. -
My earth guy is a gal accually, and a villian. >.> Earth/Fire Dom, lvl 41 currently, having a lot of fun, and really starting to dig my "poo man" lacky. The control from earth is very impressive. But since i've made an earth dom, chances are I won't make an earth hero. I'm trying not to repeat sets anymore. As such, the only 2 Primarys left for me are Ice and mind. (LvL 50 Grav/Kin, Fire/Emp, ILL/Sonic, Plant/TA, and my up and coming Earth/Fire Dom.)
I have an Ice/Storm i'm toying with ATM. pretty fun. After that... I'm thinking seriously on a Mind/Psy dom... and calling it after that. One of each, is good enough for me.

There is no point at all taking repel as a power to use with a grav/kin, because you can always stand in singy if you want the effect and have the bonus of not losing endurance.
You could take it just to slot kinetic crash if you are recharge-starved, but that it probably more of a dominator thing.
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, after level 32, you may be right. But before level 32, Repel is one of your few defensive powers. I'm not suggesting that everyone should take it, but it is far from useless. My Kin/Elec and Kin/Rad defenders use Repel periodicly as a postioning tool or panic button. I have even saved the team a few times with it.
[/ QUOTE ]
As a controller solo, I just didn't need it for personal protection. I had a hold, and an AoE hold that worked perfectly. GRANTED, that was back when the AoE hold was up every 30 to 45 seconds... ah, the good old days...Now a days, i may have SOME merit, but between a good Single target hold, and lift, you can keep a small mob hold or floping around easily, no need IMO for repel.
I've used it in the past, it's ok. On a defender, i may even be pretty useful as you discribe it, but not so much, IMO, on a controller. -
[ QUOTE ]
...I don't really need help with the slotting...but help with power selection in general
What GRav powers can I skip?
Kin powers?
SO far I'm thinking everything in Grav (except for DS), and just Transfusion, Repel, Speed Boost, Transference and FS in Kinetics.
Should I be taking other powers? Skipping others?
[/ QUOTE ]
Prople is cool, but not all that damaging. It could be skipped. I'd replace Repel with Syphon power. I know with FS i can overkill, but it's helpful to keep the damage up when your team is just down to the AV and you have not minions to add bite to your FS. And frankly, I find repel to be fairly useless myself. *shrug* YMMV. -
Been giving it alot of thought... since i have alot of free time on my hands... things being a little slow here at work, and i've adjusted my build a bit.
I decided double stacking all the leadership toggles was over kill... and veng was unnessessry. Figured passing up pets was a shame cause, not every at can get them... I've kind of altered my build to try and balance AoE damage, with personal defence and pets. I'll still be giving the team decent buffage, with 20% defence and 15% To hit. No damage buffage kind of bumbs me out, but at the same time, i can't seem to them in. I'd have to drop the pets... which i don't want, or maybe my fighting pool... which i may, but i kind of like the idea off having solid defence since i'll be mainly AoEing and prolly having to deal with alot of return fire... hmm..
Anyways, here's my NEW idea. More pricy... going to have to start putting bids in for the high doller stuff. Already got the Numina and Mir IO's... i'm thinking the posy sets and pet sets are going to cost meh... hmm. I make OK money craftin and sellin IO's on the market... and he isn't even built yet, so i'd have time before i'd need them to save and bid...

My first Dom. And Earth/Fire. It's been challanging so far... but now that i'm in my 40s, and have slots for all my cool powers, it's really starting to come alive i have to say.
But, I'm finding myself in a small delimia. I've worked my build out, and i like it alot. I use set IO's and HO's. I've prebought most everything i need. But, i have ONE power choice, and 5 slots i'm not sure what to do with.
It'll basically be my last power i can fully 6 slot. I was planning on taking Consume... but in all honesty, I can't think of one time in the last few weeks i've been playing, post stam, i've ran out of endurance... So, it'd prolly be a waste...
If not Consume, then, i have 2 choices from my primary and secondarys... Blasing Blot... and Salt Crystals. I'm not a big fan of snipes, and i hardly need more single target damage. Good recharge on my blasts and all that... and the sleep is well... a sleep... in a team setting it's kind of pointless as the AoE's will wake the mobs, and i have control in spades when i'm solo... Only time i've ever really seen a sleep be useful is in the LRSF... but i don't THINK SaltCrystals will do what Mass Hypnosis can.. can it? If it could, well, that'd make my dississon for me... but if not... eh, i have no idea what to take. heh.
I've not really looked at the patron powers that closely. never like them as they are concept braking on most of my builds. (I build to concept, not uberness 9 times out of 10) But it'd have to be one of the opening 2 powers, cause i only have one power chocie open... anything there i'm overlooking?
any advice is greatly appreactied! -
My dom is almost finished. (41.5) Once she's done, i'll have a lvl 50 for each common villian AT. At which point, I'll be focusing on a Veat. I've decided i want a crab spider, and it'll be team orinted. (once i hit 50, all i ever do with my 50's is team, so it only makes since.)
I'm a bit lost when it comes to making a Crab... this is a rough draft of what i was thinking..

I figure, this build brings 20% D and 30% to hit and dmg buffs to a team with must me standing there... which is pretty good i think. I have 2 fast rechargeing attacks for single target dmg, 3 good aoe, and a nuke. Veng for an "oh crap" button... and travel.
Seems like a decent teamer. Thoughts? Advice? I'm not married to this idea, i'm very open for suggestions. My only real requirment is it's gots to be a crab.
Thanks in advance! -

Something to consider: With Invention Enhancements, you can often get 30-60% Endurance Reduction for free.
Give an example of a character with "pretty bad endurance" and maybe we can address the specific problems.

I have a BS/Shield scrapper. I run all the shield toggles, the fighting toggles, combat jumping, and sprint most times unless i get into a long fight. I have a steady attack chain with all my attack powers having around 80% recharge. I spam headsplitter and disembowel whenever they are up.
My endurace, never runs out.why? I have, nearly 120 points of endurace and a numinia IO. A few set bonuses for recovery too. And it wasn't expensive either. (the numinia was a left over. that can get kind of pricey.) That one set you can slot into your AoE melee attacks, the one that caps at 30, but for 2 pices gives an extra 1.8 to your end... you can get 4 of them in that build, plus PJ and Atlas, that's 17.2 extra end points for almost nothing.
That, along with 20 to 40% end reduction in every attack and i'm golden.
Any build can over come it's endusage. Trust me. It's all about the IO's and +end accolades. -
My advice is, don't blow all your money on one guy... It's not worth it to "pimp" out one guy unless your really into PvP. The PvE game isn't hard by any streatch of the imagition. You can by reasonably priced IO's and Sets for all them guys, and make them all viable, and it won't cost as much as your thinking.
Purples are great, but IMO, overkill. Some of the best sets in the game IMO are crushing impacts and thuderstrikes, and they'er dirt cheap. And be reasonible when you start stacking some kinds of set bonses.
If your not having issues with your endurance... you don't need more end set bonues. If you have a solid attack chain and NEVER use your painic button powers, you prolly don't need more recharge...
So people just go nuts for recharge and end bosters without realising they can't use a power faster then it's anamation time, and if your end bar never moves, whats' the point?
To me, having a stable of usable heros, a bunch to chose from is way better then having 1 or 2 really tricked out ones. So i shop for discount IO's, and frankly, i don't think my guys ever unproform in PvE. I've done the MSTF, beaten every TF and trail in the game, raided the Hammi... none of that requires pimped out toon as it where. On over 25 different heros/villians.I enjoy asking "what do you need" knowing i can fill ANY roll the team needs. Debuffs? My rad/sonic or Ill/Sonic or Plant/TA can handle it Tanking? got a classic invuln/SS and a WP/BA that can handle nearly anything. Dmg? my fire/ice/elec blaster is an aoe meachine. I have 2 our blasters and 5 scrappers as well. Buffs, got the fire/emp, and 2 kins. Villian side i have 2 brutes, 2 corrs, 3 mms, a stalker, and a work in progress dom. (currently lvl 35)
And one lonely peacebringer.... but, i can do whatever you want me to do in a team, and i LOVE that versitialy.
But if your not as into veritity as i am, and really want 2 tricked out toons, pick the ones you find yourself playing the most. It's prolly cause you like them the best. -
Brutes will be tougher in the long run. Scrapper will on avg have better dmg. The are exceptions, like a fully buffed and enraged brute will out damage a scrapper sure, but being that pumped isn't the norm, at least, in my expearince. (I solo alot and pug for teams. not a huge villian comunity on my server.)
In all honesty, it doesn't matter. Brute or Scrapper, they'll kick ample butt. So, to decide, ask yourself, "do i want to be the hero of the story, or villian?" and roll accordingly. -

I was playing CoH when the hospital called and said a liver had been found for my daughter, who had been on the transplant list for six months or so at that point. I had to /afk for a few weeks for that one, but that was the BEST reason I've ever suddenly left the game, and everything's turned out to be just fine.

I'm glad for you. And glad to here she's doing ok.

(kind of weak for the situation i guess, but it's fitting in a way... heh) -

What if anniversary badges were account-based originally? They had the tech, it's no different than VIP.
Now if they had started account-wide, would we be hearing the people who want them character-specific? Would that option ever get off the ground? "I think characters should lose this badge if they didn't actually exist at the time."
Not every situation falls into this easy analysis, but in this case it's so obviously better the other way that this helps illustrate it.

I can only speak for me, but yeah, i'd prolly make the argument then too. In my eyes, the aniversity badges are charater badges. they are awarded to heros/villians that exisist at the time. It wouldn't make since to have a one year badge on my newest guy.. a BA/Shields scrapper... shields wasn't even IN game until 3 years after the A1 badge.
It would bug me. But i'm a tad ocd that way. Again, this isn't one of them BIG deals for me. Just an annoyince really. I LIKE the fact that Zero G, my first guy, has all the aniverisity badges, and other heros don't. It shows that Zero G was hear from day, well, at the very least year 1. That will be lose if the change is retoractive. I'd be sad, but not, like, angry or anything. it was something i was quite proud of, that i stuck with these guys as long as i did. -
Below are a few ideas Ive had on and off over the years too spice things up in this game.
Works slow, so Ill write them out and see what people thing.
1. Epic travel powers. Add 5th lvl powers to each travel pool, and allow these powers zone you to where you want to go. I figured make them lvl 30+ and you need at least 3 powers from the pool to train them. Then give them little windup animations of some type, so they cant be used to escape, much like they do with the zoning TP powers we have in game give each zone a landing area, and there you go. You can burn a power after 30 for the freedom of zoning to any zone, with in reason. I mean, JUMPING to the past or a different dimes ion just wont work, but other then that, all zones are fair game.
2. Random Missions you can enter by clicking a door. One thing thats always felt off about CoH imo was the fact that, YOU always chose who and what and when you fought your missions. It doesnt work that way in comics. Heroes stumble on the crimes in progress more often then not. So, make a random number of inactivated doors in the zone have random scanner like missions tied to them, so you can, in essence be running down the street, see a door glowing or some kind of visual queue to know something was up, click it, and enter a random mission, blind, like heroes normally do. Little entry text like, you hear a scream, or gunshots, or whatever. Heck, tie them to the scanner mission system and once you do 5, you get to run a safeguard or mayhem. The same can be done with villains somehow Im sure. Just add some more randomness to street sweeping and travel and add a feel for exploration this game IMO lacks.
3. Super rare recipes and special salvage you can craft for extra power slots. Limit how many you can make per hero of course Id recommend at least 3 to 5 for each hero so you can, with a lot of time effort and money, get one extra power 6 slotted, or at least max out that last power you can only 4 slot heck, if your feeling REALLY daring, make a power drop too, and enough slots to slot it so you can get just one more useful power our of your lvl 50 heroes
4. Id like to rescue people from more then just kidnappings, but frankly, Im not sure how itd work saving people from burning or crumbling builds I have no idea how youd implement it, but if some out there who are smarter then me can think of something please post it!
Thats all I have for now. I think itd add some spice. What do you think? -
We've all had to go AFK for wired and strange reason. So for fun, list the strangest reason you had to go AFK. Or the Strangest reasons you were given. I don't have many, but i'll start.
1. My 4 foot cornsnake was set lose by my cat, and was terrorzing the house.
2. The computer table broke... and I had to save meh PC.
3. The dogs got into a fight and the Chiuchiua lost and needs patching up... AGAIN. (you'd think he'd learn...) (He's OK, never really been hurt, just rattled. For the concerned pet owners out there.)
4. Had to save someone for grasshopper... (I live in a house of feardy cats i tell you...)
5. Had to pull a 3 or 4 foot wild ratsnake out of a friends house. (next door. The wife didn't want to kill it but the husband wouldn't try and catch it... so they called me, because, i am the freak with snakes so...)
6. The new puppy bulldog, (the one that smacks the Chiuchiua around) demands you pay attation to him, or else your toes will suffer for it! And boy did they...
7. Had to stop the bulldog from distroying the treadmill...
8. Had to stop the bulldog from ripping down the curtens...
9. Had to stop the bulldog from eating the cat... or killing the chiuchiua... AGAIN...
10. Had to stop the bulldog from devoring ANOTHER computer chair... (his second or 3rd...)
11. Had to stop the bulldog from ripping siding off the house.. AGAIN.
11b. had to fix the siding... and erect a baracade...
12. Had to "come get this stupid mut!!!" after the bulldog has worn out his welcome with the other famiy memebers and won't leave them alone...
(my bulldogs name is Bruce BTW. he's almsot a year old... I though they were supposted to be kind of lazy... boy was i lied too...)
Well, there's a few. Mainly animal related as I have no kids...
Now you. -

I'm leaning towards the "good move" idea. We don't know if it'll be retroactive at all, either. In any case, I'm thinking that as a badge community we need to pick our battles better.

If it's not retroactive, then god yes, go for it, but i don't want guys I just made getting the 1 year badge... maybe it's just me misunderstanding what Posi was saying... A difinet possibility i'm afraid. heh.
