Indeed. And that's the message that I had intended to be the takeaway from my initial post here. When/if they decide to upgrade the costume creator more than just a new ui, it would be awesome to see this kind of thing show up. (And if they need help, they can hire me and I'll figure out how to make it work)

I have no idea. But look at all the patterns in game that are supposed to line up. The vast majority of them don't.
Quote:Yeah -- some chest details seem to float above the chest slightly -- reminding me of how Green Lantern insignia has been recently depicted...
Also, chest emblems are simply black, white, and alpha. The black is where the primary color goes, the white is where the secondary color goes, and the alpha is the shape/transparency (black and white might be mixed, not sure). There is no tinting on chest emblems because it's not possible to do when you have the black and white dictating the primary and secondary color locations. If you were to try to tint a chest emblem, you would end up with the muscle lines being blends of the primary and secondary colors.
So, to do it that way... They would have to duplicate all of the chest emblems, make one a tinting base texture and leave the other as is so it would apply color correctly. So this would end up taking even more work than originally thought.
It would end up being less work to just add an additional mask/lerp/whathaveyou to the chest material. Of course, then when you go to do that they'll have to make the chest patterns not be symmetry'd so the emblems would be able to go on right.
Any way they would decide to do it, it would be a lot of work to get to work right. -
My friend's PB's doppelganger turned into a Longbow Warden when she used the rez power. Seems there's something strange going on with Peacebringer code.

Woot! You don't have to draw one of mine if they're not inspiring enough for ya though. I mostly just want to see more art from you. Awesome if it's art of one of my characters, but not necessary. I don't think I've seen anything you've drawn that I haven't liked.

Quote:You expect them to be able to line things up properly? Just about any mask that wraps around the torso doesn't meet up as is. And then it would have to be done for all three body types since they are applied differently. That would then probably require new code so that it would call the right emblem instead of just using the one emblem for all three types.Actually, the blend should be easy - muscle shading on the tights is a form of pretinting, the only thing that would need to be done is to add the same pretinting to the emblems, making sure it lines up with where the same shading is on the tights. Emblems are just geometry and textures the same as everything else, there's nothing special about them. Embossed/shiny effects should also be doable with simple texture work.
Speaking from experience as a video game model/texture artist.
I think it would probably end up being less work to recode how materials work.
Also speaking from experience as a video game model/texture artist. -
Looks great, but unfortunately, there's no way for this to work with the current costume/material code. It should be possible to set it up to work like that. But that would require a nearly complete recode of how the engine handles materials. I could set up a material that would work like you have there in UDK, and it actually wouldn't be too much work to switch around from a setup like current CoH and that, but CoH doesn't use UDK and there would be nothing that my example would have to cooperate with. Making it work in CoH would likely be far too much work right now.
That said though... When/if they upgrade the costume creator (and not just give it a new interface), it would be nice to see this put in. Along with tri-color costume options. -
Quote:"Oh, so you want a lifetime subscription? Ok, no problem. Just go ahead and purchase the one-year plan... We'll take care of everything on the back end. We guarantee you'll be playing until the end of your life."You can buy a year subscription right? And if the doctors gave you 10 months to live then you would have a lifetime subscription. So you see, lifetime subscriptions are available. The real question is why they are only given to some. This is fundamentally unfair.

Wish they had an option to use the original scheme. I don't like the customization (words I never thought I would type, really..).

Has this always been needed? If so, I'm trying to figure out how I opted in with 4 accounts (2 full accounts, 2 trials). For a while, I was getting 4 copies of every NC email. Now it's down to 2, but still a little annoying. I would like to just receive one.

They won't be getting any kudos from me though. The quote, while it mentions City of Heroes, actually does a disservice to the game as a whole. People who see the show may think, "Oh, City of Heroes, I could play a hero, ok cool. I wish there was a game where you could play a bad guy though." Sure, it might pique their interest and they might come check out the game and realize that they can play a character of whatever alignment they desire, but people tend to be lazy (especially amongst the target demographic for primetime network programming).

We don't get walk? I didn't really pay attention. I did pay attention on my lowbies though, and noticed that I could walk and use a rocket board even (that was on beta the other week when I was trying out a fire/dark troller I think). Maybe it's different on live, but I was definitely able to do it on beta for the mission where you get turned into the reporter. LMAO'd about it too.

I silently curse players who don't do this. I always take the rear elevator, and say to myself to those who take the front ones, "Don't blame me when you get killed."
-
So, I already have art done by you for free of two of my characters... But one I have since deleted and the other I haven't played in years now. So I'm throwing in a few characters that I actually play and would love to have art of.
First off, Becca Blue (my Inv/SS Tanker that has become my main since Incarnates) and Becca Boom (her Praetorian equal, a Inv/StJ Tanker):
In case it isn't obvious from their costumes, they're of Scottish heritage (Chest Detail: Celtic knots for Blue and the Rampant Lion for Boom). They're both magic origin, powers granted by the Fae after their parents were killed. Similar events in Primal and Praetoria, Blue's archeologist parents were killed by Banished Pantheon in their search for a way to resurrect one of their gods; while Boom's parents were killed when First Ward became what it is today. That's enough depressing stuff for now, so yeah, they're both Heroes now.
And here's an alternate look for Boom:
Blue has a similar look, except Blue's shirt is a full t-shirt and she wears tight blue jeans instead of the resistance pants.
Some others I wouldn't mind getting art of:
No Action (Praetorian KM/Nin Stalker, now Hero): And Evan Johnstone:
No Action is the Praetorian version of my Peacebringer Evan Johnstone who is Becca's cousin. On Primal, Evan tried to be a hero when he met Becca, failed, almost died, and wound up bonded to a Kheldian to save both their lives. In Praetoria, Evan never met Becca. Instead, he spent his years studying under a Taoist master until the Hamidon/Cole conflict spilled over into his backyard and he realized that some sort of Action was required.
And then there's Coil Jumper (Elec/Regen Scrapper): (not shown well in the shot, he's got the Back of Head Tattoo face detail)
He was a Victorian-era stuntman who performed death defying feats to entertain the masses. The devices on his shoulders/arms were designed by him to deliver his own blend of pain-relieving drugs into his bloodstream so that he could push his body further and further to perform better stunts. One of his more popular stunts was to jump through an active Jacob's Ladder (the science may not make sense here, disregard that, it's fantasy). Things went wrong one time and he ended up getting zapped. The electricity triggered a reaction in the chemicals that flowed through his veins and ripped a tear in space-time that sent him to modern day Praetoria (this science is even crazier, but there's precedence in the CoXverse given Superadine's role in trans-dimensional travel). He retro-fitted his devices to pump Fixadine and did whatever he could to get more of it. Now that he's in Primal again, he's a Vigilante with a great record of drug-busts (which he of course uses to synthesize his own version of Fixadine now).
Aaaaaaaaand one more option, Miss Molotok (SS/SR Brute):
I'll keep her story shorter. She was an Olympic gymnast for 1930's Russia (Praetorian); she was barred from competing when it was discovered she was a mutant. A few years later she signed up for a program that would "bring glory to Mother Russia". She ended up experimented on and eventually cryogenically frozen; and then forgotten about when Hamidon started wrecking up the place. She was thawed out when a cell of DE destroyed the lab she was stored at. She woke up, killed the DE, blacked out, and ended up in Nova and signed up in Powers Division.
Ok. That's enough from me. Great to see you back, Alex. Wish I had seen this thread sooner. Great characters and great art so far. -
Quote:Ditto. This is also why I almost always run my tips in Talos. I've found that there are a few tips that will try to send me to another zone if I am not in Talos, but will be in Talos if I'm there already. I forget which ones do this right now; it might be one of the DE ones and one of the CoS ones. If I pick them up while in another zone, they have a randomly decided zone as the destination. But if I investigate them while in Talos, they will always be in Talos. I wish all tips would just be in the zone I'm currently in, like paper/radio mishes. The less zoning the better for me.If the tip tries to send me out of the zone I'm in, I ditch it. Otherwise, I'll run anything.
Also, DAE find it odd/ironic/silly that "Explosion in Peregrine" will be in whatever zone you investigate it in while other tips seem to be hard-set to be in specific zones?
Edit to add: The Unusual Suspect. I've run it more times than I remember. Where are all these doubles even coming from? Why don't I ever get a mission to shut down the cloning factory that is churning out evil versions of myself at the rate of three per week!? -
Quote:I feel like this deserves more attention. I've always been glad to have the sliders; they are very helpful in creating different looks. However, if they actually affected the whole area they are said to govern, I would be much happier with them. The hips slider is a problem with both genders; it really does just affect leg spacing, it doesn't actually widen the top of the hips or affect the buttocks. The chest slider for females is really just a "boob slider". The male chest slider affects chest circumference whilst the female slider really just affects cup size. This one was probably a compromise since we'd really need two sliders here since it's possible to have a 32A bustline or a 38A or a 32C or a 36DDD or whatever other measurement you want to come up with. Unlikely that any of this would ever be adjusted at this point in the game's lifespan, but hopefully it'll be something they consider with future products. The Hip slider does not work how it should.
It should scale the whole "brief area" but it doesn't.
Currently, it just adjusts 'leg spacing'. So you can scale it down and it'll look OK in a front view, but from the side you'll a have a massive butt in proportion.
In fact, you really have very little control over butt size. Much like arm and leg thickness, it's governed by the overall Physique slider. So trying to adjust for it results in a freakishly proportioned monstrosity with a massive trunk, spindly arms and legs and even tinier hands and feet.
It's bad enough the base male model has wonky proportions to start with. Tiny hands and feet, big thunder thighs, waist much smaller in profile, weird chest. Yes, I know it's not supposed to be 'realistic.' Super heroic proportions are one thing, but our base model is pretty Liefeldian.

Wait. No, it won't really be reduced? Or no, there is not going to be a tactical strike? Stop sending mixed messages! >.< lol

Probably not actually. What it would entail would be a reworking of the engine to allow an extra map to be used. What makes the colors right now is a black and white (greyscale actually) image that gets plugged into a node. It's possible when setting up materials to add an extra node in so that you'd have three color options (essentially using two b&w masks on top of each other), but I have no idea how flexible CoH's engine is nor how they even set up their materials. And then you'd have to set up the UI to work properly with three colors as well. So, the issue wouldn't require any work from the character artists; but it would require some significant work from coders and UI guys. Considering that the coders and UI guys generally always have a full plate of work in front of them and Paragon is looking to hire at least one more coder and UI guy, I doubt this is going to get any attention any time soon. Also, just because the theory of how to fix it is explainable in a few sentences, that means nothing about how time consuming or difficult the actual act of making it work is.

Sure, I'll share.
What side do you pick more than others?
Hero. I have 3 (I think, not logged on and can't check my pwiki user page to verify) villains out of the multitude of characters I have on my "home" server.
What play style do you prefer?
Melee. The AT that I have the most of is Scrapper, but my "main" is a Tanker. I started out playing a Controller as my main, switched to a blaster, switched to a bunch of Scrappers, and then found my love for my Tanker.
What power set(s) do you favor?
Fire, fire, fire, fire, fire, and fire. I think I have a fire/ or /fire everything somewhere. Ironically, with how many fire/ or /fire characters I have, my "main" is an Inv/SS Tanker. Most of my Tankers and Brutes are actually SS, and more recently I've made quite a few StJ users.
What zones do you like the most?
Despite not really liking any of the villain groups and actually hating a couple of the missions, I always play through all of Croatoa on every character. I don't think there's any other zone I can say that about. I just like the concept and the story of the zone enough that I look past the annoyances.
I have some good memories of Brickstown when my Fire/Kin Controller was in the mid 30's. This was around issue 7 I think, so no insane amount of imps or anything. Still, with everything going for her at that point, I had no trouble taking out groups of +4's. I ended up PLing some members of my then Supergroup.
I think my new favorite zone is the new DA though. It gives me the option to continue progression on my "main" without having to deal with the iTrials. I'd much rather solo at my own pace through a good story than rush through a trial with 20+ other people. And so far, from what I've run on Beta, it is looking like a better story than I originally expected.
Do you usually play as a male or female characters?
My main is a female. My original main was a female. My second main was a female. I don't exclusively play females though, I used to have half and half, not it's probably a 2:1 ratio. Females get better costume options imo. Being that I am a Character Artist/Designer/Modeler, I like having options.
Views on Role Playing?
I prefer to Role Play around a table with a group of friends. I always get into the mindset of the characters I play to some extent, but I dislike speaking in-character through the game client. Easier to RP IRL.
Servers?
Guardian is my home, but with my altaholism I have characters all over the place. -
-
Quote:Pretty much the reverse. Well, almost.Did anyone completely switch their main? Go from a tank to a defender or whatever?
The first character I rolled was a Scrapper. But I didn't play him much at all.
The first character I stuck with and made friends with others while playing was a Fire/Kin Controller (the third character I created, so I had no idea that the combo was so good).
My Controller was my first character to make it higher than 40, but stalled at 41.
Meanwhile I had gotten a fire/fire blaster to the 30s and continued to push on with her and hit 50 with her.
The blaster never really became my main though.
I went back to the Controller and hit 50 eventually.
Meanwhile I had a few Scrappers and Tankers that I never really played gathering dust at low levels. And then I actually started playing them. And I realized that I much prefer the playstyle of Scrappers and Tankers.
There were a few Scrappers that I considered my main for a while; a BS/WP for a while, and then a Fire/Shield, also a Fire/Regen. And I got a few more Scrappers to 50 too.
And then eventually I went back to my Inv/SS Tanker that I had rolled up long long ago. I had always enjoyed SS and always wished that it was available for Scrappers since Tankers felt too slow for me. But I played her anyway. And I forget what the timing was like, but she ended up hitting 50 and I ended up giving her a good IO build (I think the IO build was before hitting 50, but I'm not sure. IOs might not have even been out then). But anyway, eventually she got to be really enjoyable, and then the incarnate system was introduced and I had to figure out who to incarnate. So I picked a few and she was among them. And now she's my main.
So yeah, I went from Controller (sort of to Blaster) to Scrapper to Tanker. -
Don't make excuses for the youngsters. They should culture themselves. Anyone who only watches movies made after they were born is doing a disservice to themselves. (Well, except maybe Besse Cooper and the handful of other people born in the 1800s that are still alive, since movies made before 1896 weren't very good...)

Thanks for sharing all this, David. You may remember me asking if we could get the model sheets from the new CoT during one of the Ustreams. Awesome to see us getting there.
Also, your model sheets are great; I'd love to model from them. Which means I need to finish getting my portfolio in order so I can actually apply and then I actually could model from your model sheets. Soon... Well, soon I'll apply, and then hope... -
With league events, when you queue up for the Trial. It pops up with a window asking if you're ready to enter. Invariably at least one person will be afk when it pops up and will delay the process, but I digress. That type of interface is what I'm saying should be added to the reactor room.
