My wife and I were visiting my parents for the holiday weekend, so I wasn't able to make it. I did go ahead and create Capt. Newton in Praetoria, and here's hoping he makes his debut next week.
-
My buddy and I experienced this while running tips last night. Neither of us have visited Null.
-
Freedom is my home server and houses my small handfull of 50s. I have a smattering of lowbies on Virtue though, so I'll be watching global channels to join you some time.
-
Quote:On which server do you play? I must join a DKTF.The first rule of DKTF is: You do not talk about DKTF.
The second rule of DKTF is: At all times, you must be having fun.
Third rule: If you think you can handle it, you're free to go for it.
Fourth rule: If you thought you could handle it but couldn't, get back up or hosp out.
Fifth rule: Any build, any budget, no exclusions.
The sixth and final rule of DKTF: If this is your first DKTF, you have to take an alpha strike.

I just hit 50 on my DP/Kin and I have never had more fun leveling a toon. Both powersets put you right in the thick of things which creates some nail biting moments from time to time. Great fun solo and on teams.
-
Last night's Ice Minstral SF was a walk in the park. Next week we will be returning to hero side. I'll wait to pick our TF until the WST is announced. Now that the core group is all level 50, I've got my eye on Apex and Tin Mage.

The only tank that has held my interest enough to not get deleted is my WP/Axe tank. I absolutely love willpower because of the layered mitigation. It gives good defense, resistance, and regen. At lvl 50, there isn't much that I have found that can kill me.
When making his build, my goal was to softcap all typed defense (except psionic), 600% or better regen with one enemy in range, and 70% or better S/L resistance. With my alpha slotted with tier 3 cardiac (for the extra resistance), I was able to achieve all three. For kicks, I like to aggro about 10 GMs on monster island in PI and just stand there while my health never drops below 80%.
The only downside to willpower is the weak taunt aura, but as long as you are actively bashing things in the face with your axe, they stay pretty well taunted. -
Quote:The character I plan on using is a gravity controller or dominator (haven't decided which yet) by the name of Captain Newton (or some similar variation depending on name availability). Here is a rough draft of what I have in mind for his bio.@Irish Fury, that would be lovely. It's always nice to have some friends outside the main group to tag along from time to time; even the biggest superhero teams invited their buddies along from time to time. =D
Quote:Not a Kid Anymore
-Jackson Turner, Paragon City Times
As the war with Praetoria rages, some of the younger, less experienced heroes of Paragon City have seemingly been forgotten. Among these young protectors, is a promising talent going by the name of “Kid Newton”. When Primal Earth heroes began organizing strikes on key Praetorian targets, Kid Newton stepped up to the plate to lend a hand. Unfortunately, he was met with resistance and more than a few sneers from the senior heroes of the city. “This isn’t kid stuff, junior. Go back to Skyway”, he was told by one prominent hero.
Last week, I had the privilege of interviewing Kid Newton, who now only answers to the name “Captain Newton”. In that interview, Newton expressed his desire to be respected by his peers and recognized by his city. He continually stated very vaguely that he had plans for his future, and that “If I can’t get the recognition I deserve here, I will get it else where.”
Since that interview, no one has seen or heard from Kid Newton, and crime is his neighborhood of Skyway City is sharply on the rise. Captain Newton, if you’re reading this, your city still needs you. -
This week, while working on Rogue tips to get back to blue side, Cobalt-Cowboy dinged 50!! Woohoo! Last night he participated in, and failed the Keyes Island Reactor Trial, but it was good fun nonetheless.
Anyway, there is but one (not counting the LRSF) red side SF that we have not done, and it just so happens to be the WST this week. What luck! So we will be meeting at the normal time to run the Ice Minstral SF in St Martial. -
Also, Champion is a fine server with a lot of helpful vets. I have a few alts there myself, but if you prefer larger crowds, try Virtue or Freedom. Virtue is the unofficial roleplaying server, and Freedom has a reputation as the unofficial PvP and AE Farm (power leveling) server.
Freedom is my home server and there are a lot of great people there, but I would recommend avoiding AE teams at least for a little while. For a bit of context, AE is a system that allows players to create their own missions. While there are many quality story arcs in AE, it tends to be used more often for repetitive XP farms which will level your character faster than you can learn the abilities. I generally play from around 8:30 PM-10:30 PM central time, I'll be happy to create a low level character on any server you wish and show you a few things.
As far as which AT to try, I would recommend as many others have, to make quite a few toons. The game has enough content that you can level a lot of characters without repeating very much. However, if you want specific suggesstions, I would say for someone learning the game a scrapper or a blaster as they are the most straight forward ATs. Scrappers having more survivability, and blasters having ranged (and usually better) damage output. -
I don't want to pull you away from making a blaster, but you should consider making a dual pistols corruptor. My DP/Kin just hit 50, and it was the most fun I have ever had leveling a toon.
Fulcrum Shift+Hail of Bullets+Scourge=Awesome! -
This sounds like a fun idea, and the type of RP I could go for, but Sundays are tough for me. Perhaps I can be a secondary character showing up from time to time to help out? I have a toon on Liberty that begs to be in this group, and I will happily re-roll him.
-
Went 1-15 in about an hour on my shiny new DB/Fire Brute. I've wanted to make on for a while now, but those early levels are just painful for melee toons. Or maybe I just suck at playing melee. Either way, I can slot DOs now and am enjoying my new character
.

Quote:I started out on Liberty and it was a lot like this. Much slower paced, people enjoying missions and taking their time. A lot of my friends moved to Freedom when GR came out, so I moved most of my toons there as well. I will always miss Liberty though. The people there are just awesome. It is a lower pop server, but I never really had a problem finding teams.anyways, it just seams lots of people arnt interested in the slower more casual arcs. (like that one poster that said, I make sure to click as fast as i can so i dont slow people down) thats sorta what im talking about. I rather not do that. Take your time, grab a coffee inbewteen missions, enjoy the night.
Are any servers more geared to that style? -
Quote:The best solution I've found is to run arcs via Ouroboros so the rewards work like a TF. The downside, of course, is that you can't add anyone to the team after you've started. The problem with story arcs are that they don't share rewards. The whole team is basically incrementing the merit counter for one person.
The other paths are equal for everyone - since everyone shares the same experience, inf, drop chance, and hero merit advancement.
I do plenty of story line missions, but always feel bad about asking anyone to join when it is so one sided in my favor. If I end up leading a group, I always try to rotate whose mission we are doing to keep it sort of fair. I can't think of a non-exploitable way to make it more inherently fair, but as the system stands, it's easier just to run hero tips when you can get a group. There should be some way to sync everyone up on a mission chain easily, but I'll be damned if I know how (unless you get lucky and don't need to do anything but run a couple of catchup missions.)
It's the one downside of having so many missions combined with the locked contact thing. Maybe that's the way to fix it. Complete one mission on a team for a contact, and then you get that contact for free without needing to do the whole bank mission thing. That way we run one mission, then start at the beginning of the thread to catch everyone else up. -
Any corruptor and any corruptor.
Seriously though, my friend and I run a DP/Kin and DP/Thermal duo and they are nearly unstoppable. DP is loads of fun. As a previous poster said, it isn't the best damage set, but it sure is cool. The debuffs from thermal are complimented very well by the team buffs from kinetics, and having a few heals to toss around helps a lot in the early levels. -
I think there are a lot of people who feel the same way you do. I know I am one of them. I would suggest you do what I try to do. Advertise in your server's global channels that you are running the (insert name) story arc for (insert aprox lvl range).
Another thing you can try to do is put together a static team to run once or twice a week. My buddy and I put together an all dual pistols team which started out running story arcs, but recently we've been running a different TF every week so as not to get bored. Our goal is to run every TF in the game.
Don't worry if you aren't the team leader type, generally speaking when it comes to contact missions and story arcs, all you are really expected to do as team leader is set the mission.
Edit: When CoH: Freedom launches, I imagine finding teams for story arcs will be much easier since freems won't have access to AE. -
That would work for me, because in that scenario the audience's first encounter is still with the character of Superman and not Clark Kent. I just don't want to wait 30 minutes to see The Man of Steel.
-
I think you have to have a Lex Luthor presence in a Superman film. I do NOT want him to be the film's primary antagonist, but Superman with no Lex feels...wrong. Even if he is only seen on a television news broadcast in the back ground, Lex needs to be around.
That being said, Superman needs to face off with an equally super opponent for a change. No, Nuclear Man does not count. Braniac, Darkseid, Metallo, etc. As a matter of fact, I have a bit of a list of things that I think need to be either present or absent for a new Superman flick to make me happy. Here goes...
1. NO origin story, PLEASE!!! We all know who Superman is and where he came from. Movie opens in Metropolis and Superman (not Clark Kent) shows up in the first few minutes.
2. NO Kryptonite. Seriously, It's been done to death. Throw Supes a curve ball.
3. NO depowering of Superman. Kind of in line with the previous item.
4. An antagonist that challenges Superman intelluctually AND physically.
5. Lois Lane needs to be tough, with a soft spot. Bring on Teri Hatcher! Do not put WW in this movie. Lois is Superman's love interest, period. I would even submit that Lois and Clark should be together and Lois should know that Clark is Superman from the beginning of the film.
6. Take the franchise seriously. Tone down the camp (with Chris Nolan involved, I'm sure this won't be an issue). -
I don't really see a mass exodus to the VIP server happening. Sure, there will be a fair number of people who would rather not deal with the new folks pack up and leave town, but I think it is safe to assume those folks would either ignore the new free players, or be down right hostile toward them, so I say good riddance and have fun in your ivory tower.
I don't see most people leaving their home server and friends just to escape the free players. Some of the most fun teams I have been on, are the ones made up of mostly new players. Their enthusiasm for the game makes things much more light and enjoyable. When I was newbie not so long ago, I received a lot of friendly help and advice, and I look forward to having even more opportunities to pass that on. I may be overly optimistic, but I think most people feel the same way. I live on Freedom and Virtue, and that is where I intend to stay. Bring on more team mates! -
Quote:Basically all of this. I don't so much mind occasionally paying for new powersets, missions, etc since I did pay extra for a few when GR came out, BUT I would prefer they be sold a la carte so I can just pay for the ones I want. This should be RARE. As rare as previous paid expansions have been. Once every few years at most. New powersets, proliferation, and new missions/TFs should still be coming to VIPs at no extra cost via issue releases just as they always have.I don't want to list specific items as that's largely pointless, so let me split the list into things I'm fine paying extra (beyond the 400 VIP points) for and things I don't feel I should be asked to pay for or should ever be offered.
Things I'll pay for:
1. Anything purely cosmetic. Costume pieces, effects, customization options, props, animation options, emotes, title colours and so on.
2. Anything purely for convenience. Remote Tailor access, remote Market access, larger Global Friends list, more extra build slots, etc.
3. Anything that's purely pointless. Non-combat untargetable pets, the Rock and Snowball powers, access to a purely cosmetic VIP lounge somewhere, that sort of thing.
*I'd be willing to pay for these things even if they aren't technically new additions, but I'm paying to unlock them at character creation as opposed to unlocking them via in-game achievements.
Things I feel I'm entitled to as a VIP:
1. Powers-related additions. New powersets, new ATs, proliferated old powersets, revamped old powersets, new power pools, epic pools and patron pools, new character-specific tempermanent power and things of that nature.
2. World-related additions. New zones, new instance tilesets, revamped zones, new rooms added to old tilesets, mini-zones, hub-zones and such.
3. Mission-related additions. New story arcs, new task forces, new trials, new raids, new contacts, new sources of lore or storyline information and suchforth.
4. Subsystem-related additions. New currencies, new game systems (Inventions/Architect/Incarnates), new types of activities and everything else like this.
*I CAN be persuaded to show understanding if large additions in at least three of the above four categories above and beyond the norm are added in the game as a paid expansion, but it needs to be BIG.
Things I feel should never be sold for real money:
1. Influence. Never, ever.
2. Loot of any kind. Enhancements, recipes, salvage, tickets, merits, shards, threads, components or anything else of the sort. Just no.
3. Experience and levels, or boosts to either of those. Under no circumstances.
4. Lifting game balance restrictions. Taking powers earlier than normal, putting more than six slots in powers, trading powers for slots, slots for powers, using enhancements below their minimum level or above their maximum level, entering into otherwise forbidden places. Do not.
5. Character power. Powers, slots, Incarnate boosts, buffs and so on. Do not want.
That about covers it.
As far as you list of thing that should never be sold, I am in 100% agreement. -
My rule of thumb is that if someone rejects me based on the type of toon I'm running, that is not a person I want to team with anyway. My first 50 and probably my consistently favorite toon is an Energy/Energy blaster, so I feel your pain.
On the subject of knock back, it can be a very useful tool to a team if used correctly. It as easy as remembering two rules when teamed:
1: Use AOE KB very sparingly and only when absolutely necessary.
2: If you knock it back, knock it dead. -
-
The story arcs from the contacts in Faultline contain some AV encounters. That would be my suggestion for your level range.
-
I am not a fan of AE farming from 1-50 by any means, BUT I only pay my subscription fee, not any one else's. That being the case I don't feel right trying to dictate how anyone chooses to play the game.
I know people say AE isn't being used as the devs intended, and that may be true, but the tools to create and play farms were provided by the devs, and people choose to use them. I don't see the benefit in incentivizing Portal Corp farms over AE farms. What's the difference? Farming is farming, and the devs actions have shown countless times that they are okay with it.
If you want to spend your game time mindlessly killing the exact same enemy thousands upon thousands of times, it's your 15 bucks, knock yourself out.
