  1. Thanks for the replies guys. I asked originally because there wasn't a guide specifically for Illusion/Storm, but looking at Local_Man's Illusion/Radiation, plus the two builds given by Pans_Folley and Doomguide help a great deal. I like both of them, and will probably combine them(I love having Hover/Fly for instance). My 'troller is currently level 28 and has been incredibly fun to play. Thanks again!

Edit: I have quite a bit of Influence, so I imagine finding sets with Ranged Defense and/or Recharge are what I should go for.
  2. At level 26 now, and have run into a problem...namely too many good powers to select! I'd like to solicite some opinions on a leveling build. Assault(which I took at level 24) is essential(super group requirements, which I don't mind a whit). I need to fit Maneuvers or Tactics in there somewhere as well. Vengeance would be icing on the cake.

Any advice is welcome. I fully realize now, that this is a tight build.

Cost is relative when it's a game with simulated bits and bytes. It doesn't cost me much to do something I'd be spending time on anyway (selling what drops I get, crafting some things to sell them ready made).

You're right that if I flat out bought things from a standing start it would cost more. With a little thought and planning, it costs less, and that leads to just as much sense of accomplishment as blowing through a mission.
I cannot dispute your experience. Lets just agree that either option is viable. One last little caveat....for the most part, players are the 'must get now' crowd. With that in mind, I still think my method is easier....not better...just easier.

My initial reaction to this post was 'it's cheaper to buy DO's twice then to craft level 15 IO's once'. I decided to test my gut feeling before posting, however.

It costs 286,500 to purchase all DO's at 12th and 18th. I used 10 Acc, 5 damage, 5 end reduction as a base.

It costs 139,100 to purchase the same number of level 15 IO recipes. With the exception on Luck Charms(current going rate 50k) Only Spell Scrolls are a bit expensive....perhaps 15k for five of them if you're patient.

Lets say you've been lucky, and have found five Luck Charms. You are even more lucky, and manage to purchase five more at 25,000 each. That's 125,000, plus 139,100, plus 15,000(for the Spell Scrolls), plus a couple of grand more for the rest of the salvage.....This isn't even taking into account the crafting cost, plus the amount of time invested in crafting all of these IOs. For my money and time, I'll continue to purchase DOs at levels 12 and 18. It's easy, cheap, and far less time consuming.

One caveat...I frequently put up lowball bids on level 15 IOs when making an alt....sometimes I get some...other times I don't.

Caveat two: I like accuracy early on. This is a personal preference, and most powers have at least two accuracy DOs. Luck Charms are obviously an expensive part of this type of slotting.
  5. I've always advocated DOs at levels 12 and 18(right or wrong). I combine at 18. I also start putting in bids at level 18 for a combination of common IOs and cheap IO sets. By the time I hit 22 most of my bids are filled. I then either plug the holes with SOs or if I happen to have some IO recipes, I craft what is useable. I often respec at level 22 as well, and just sell off all of my DOs for a little more capital to work with.
  6. I love seeing posts like the OPs. I can directly relate to how the Dev's feel on a day to day basis. You see, I'm a casino dealer. I've been called every name in the book. Yet I'm human. I care. I make mistakes. I'm not a friggin' machine. Yet so many of the masses see only someone who is making their lives miserable. It's very difficult to leverage these types of responses. All in all, the Devs of this game have done a wonderful job of leveraging though. I salute you guys.

Same here. The blizzard of '78 wiped out all of our cattle unfortunately. Only two cats of all the animals we owned survived(out of 50 or so). The flood of '79 further doomed our farm(North Dakota if you care). That was the last bit of official farming I've ever done.
  8. Nice post Serrate. I agree with everything you said. Once more for emphasis, Shadow Maul, when properly used, is an incredible power. Easily able to hit 3+ bad guys in a mob.

Initially I took Strength of Will out of my build, but found that if I wanted to team post-50, and I was going to be the main tank, SoW was indespensable in the very TFs you mentioned..ITF, STF.
  9. I'm a little ashamed to admit this, but a couple of times on my Dark Defender, after hearing a round of 'great heals!' I'll go afk for a mob or two and see what happens. More often than not, the team gets a whacking. And not for my lack of heals. I try to educate the team thereafter that my Debuffs are having the most benefit, and oftentimes it sinks through. Other times of course it doesn't. I do what I can to educate.

Edit: Fortunately, this is a rare occurance. More often than not, even on PuGs, my Dark Defender is welcomed on any team.
  10. Nice post Top Doc. I haven't a single character 'Purpled out' if that's the phrase. Yet all of my 'fully IO'd' characters(seven I think) are rediculously tough. There are a couple of my characters that probably could afford to get a bunch of Purples, but I really haven't needed them.

If you have a specific goal in mind for each character, whether it be Regen, HPs(or a combination of the two), Ranged defense, typed defense, etc...it's relatively easy to do....with minimal time spent playing the market. Purples really aren't needed.

This sounds pretty groovy. I may just try it myself!

I was going to make an Electric/Super Strength...still up in the air with that one.
  12. Like many here my first choices 'Faust' from my Wolfenstein ET days, 'Grog' from my Never Winter Nights Howard's LotR days, and 'Cromag' from my MuD days were all taken. I settled on Ignatz, which was one of my most endearing DnD characters...a gnome Illusionist(with a little rogue). Ignatz is in a tie with my favorite DnD character ever made...a strength based Halfling Paladin named Cosmos Stormhammer, which you guessed it, wielded a Holy Thundering Warhammer two handed.

I can't recall off the top of my head when this change came into effect, but it's a huge boost to Kheldians.....You can switch into Dwarf form while Mezzed. My attention to time is fairly poor, so I have no idea if this information is useful to you.

If you meant VEATs, I've got nothing for you.

I agree with Bill. I've never been much of a fan of human only builds(although I have a secondary one on my PB for soloing). The Dwarf change was huge for most Kheldians. Mezzed? Out of Break Frees? Go Dwarf for a few seconds. Seems effective to me as mez protection.

In over 5 years I've logged in the game almost daily and I always hate it. Every month I pay my subscription fee and I rage at having to pay for this horrible game when the development team never listens to me. They never give me what I want. I don't really know what that is but they never do it. They never make the game the way I tell them to. Well sometimes they do what I tell them to but then I end up not liking it because it's dumb and they should have known that. What am I paying them for?

So if they stopped giving me more stuff I would definitely be outta here because the stuff that I have been playing since May of 2004 up until now has never been any good and it sickens me that I am forced to spend so much time playing this game, a game that I pay for and it's always been terrible.

Multiple free updates over 5 years, not to mention one paid expansion we were forced to buy....nice way to squeeze extra money out of people by the way...did you really think we wouldn't figure that out? and they have never once gotten it right.

I try to be patient because I'm a mature adult but I can only take being ripped off and defrauded for so long.

If there were no more free updates I would quit this stupid game that I play daily just like I have been telling the developers that I would with every update they have ever had.

I would go play some other game out there that is actually good where the developers actually listen to their playerbase and design their MMOs around each individual player to give them what they want. Every other MMO out there does this. There is no excuse that this one doesn't do that too.

Then I would be gone and this company wouldn't have my subscription fee anymore. Hopefully maybe then they would learn because it seems it is the only thing that will teach them and maybe finally get them to fix this game and make it good.

I would also probably file a Class Action lawsuit because not putting out anymore content updates in an online game is clearly "bait and switch" and fraud. I looked it up on the internet somewhere and read it and plus my dad is a lawyer so I know what I am talking about.
I love sarcasm! It's just so delicious to me.

  17. Biospark, I really like this thread! I'm looking forward to seeing how you do against higher level baddies....although, I feel fairly confident you'll be able to handle them quite nicely.
Keep up the good work debunking the 'you can't solo the ? AT' myth.

As has been stated by many(most notably Hobo), any AT can be soloed given enough determination, smarts, and moxy.
  18. My Dark Defender has often been the tipping point between success and failure on a team....not to say that other AT's also haven't been...

One example of success with rarely played defenders(in comparison to Empathy) was a Khan TF I recently ran. The team consisted of a Dark Defender(me), Storm Defender, TA Defender, WP Tank, Two scrappers, and a Blaster. For the most part, this team steamrolled...the debuffs were crazy.

I'll take a skilled Storm defender, and a relatively unskilled Dark Defender over an Empathy(or Thermal) any day.

Edit:Minor quibble....I didn't actually run the team myself, just a PuG I happened by when I had an hour to kill...
Edit2: My experience was with Defenders...Perhaps it would be different with a Villain team with Corruptors instead...but I'm thinking it isn't.
  19. This is actually an interesting question to me.....common sense would say that originally this was a temporary power. I don't recall that.....although I started playing shortly after Beta, and my first Invulnerablity Tanker was made around I2.

My guess again, was the sometime around launch, this was a timed power that was changed before I1, but the name of the power was never changed. Now I'm kind of curious about the specifics.

At 20, six slots will get you to ~89% end and confuse, and by 30, 4x will get you to ~87% end and confuse, so eventually those two other slots for AA can be you know, Damage procs, or whatever. At 50, without going into Coercive Persuasion, you can get ~75% end and confuse with just three slots, and maybe add a third slot of something-else, if you really wanted (e.g., two damage procs and contagious confusion?)... except, knowing what I know about AA confuse % chance, I'd really rather have more confuse dur than that.
Thanks Enantiodromos. Sorry my reply is late, but your advice is sound. She's currently level 26, and I just need to figure out who to delete from the three servers I mainly play on now. Kind of excited to get her into the rotation again.

Hmm...I had thought the only one you had no choice over was the very first hunt 10 CoT in Perez Park, unless you weren't high enough level for your next contact. I'm not doubting your word, just wondering out loud I guess.

Interesting. I may have seen these(or similar) numbers before, but if so, I can't remember when and from whom. I can say that the scaling resistances have saved my Katana/SR's hide many many times.
  23. Hmm....I should really bring out my Ice/Kinetic out for a spin again(after I've transferred to a different server). AA was a terrific power, and I was always tinkering with the best way to slot it(especially increasing the confuse duration as it tended to draw lots of agro). It's too bad I took my year long break when she was one of my most active characters...and too bad she's on a server I no longer play on.

If you have any other suggestions on slotting AA, I'm more than willing to listen.
  24. Let's stop the bickering over semantics and wording for a moment.

The simple fact is that using confuse INCREASES xp over time. Of that, there should be no debate. To put it another way, you gain less xp per defeat, but do it more quickly, therefore increasing xp over time.

Edit:I should point out that this increase in xp per time is more noticeable when soloing than while in a large team. Entire spawns can be wiped out pretty quickly, thereby negating most of the effect of confuse. By switching targets constantly, doing as much damage as possible to several targets solo, you get most of the xp reward, but at a much faster pace.
