Nice art there. I love the way that character looks and can't wait to see it in game.
so when do players get those nifty new costume pieces? -
Quote:Your analogy is flawed.... you have seriously never heard of Slashdot, Slashdotting, or the Slashdot effect?
That's sort of like going into a computer store and asking who Microsoft is.
Microsoft created windows which is what the vast majority of Non-Apple PCs use for their OS. Before Windows it was DOS, which while not created by microsoft, was bought and distributed by microsoft with the microsoft name attached to it.
Even if their OS wasn't on millions of computers around the world, they still make a ton of other software products like Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, etc that run on Windows and Mac at this point.
So really if you are even a little bit computer literate you almost have to have heard of microsoft in one way or another. Through advertising or the facts that it's hard to imagine a computer, even an Apple computer at this point, with no microsoft products on it.
On the other hand, Slashdot doesn't advertise nearly as much, hasn't been around as long and they don't make OS's or other software. Their just an internet site and unless you've heard of it so you know to go to it, there is really no reason you'd just bump into it without some one telling you about it. -
Who was the first to be "first post after a red-name." I've been curious to know where that all started, when, and if we know who started it.
-
So this was posted the other day on the main site, for those of you who haven't read it...
http://goingrogue.na.cityofheroes.co...-overview.html
The first few lines kind of jumped out at me.
Praetoria, humankind's last and best chance for survival, shines like a beacon of hope across an embattled world.
Anyone else feel like the person who wrote this might have been watching the intro to Babylon 5 while typing it up?
Honestly I expected the next line to be "A quarter million humans and aliens living together in ...." -
Quote:There is a difference between powers and costume pieces. Powers aren't part of the costume creator and aren't going to work the same way.The Tech for these isn't the animation problem, its to do with the costume nodes on the back. They are tied to the skeleton, not the surface. Make a huge character and equip a jetpack. See how the bulk of it's INSIDE the body? Now imagine if your quiver was there too... Could have some cool outcomes, but mostly annoying.
Now make a small character... see how the jetpack is not attached to your body?
THAT is the tech limitation.
Also wings and capes already excist, they can already have things attached to the back regardless of size.
Not to mention that there are chest pieces that wrap around the back, and don't disappear into the model when the size changes. These things also work with animations that twist the upper body.
There are already back pieces, back details, and chest pieces that cover the back. It's been done, they just haven't done it for backpacks only yet.
Hell create some chest pieces called backpack that have straps on the chest and wrap around the back like the samurai pieces do and call it a day. -
Quote:Yeah. We are supposed to be getting more for going Rogue. Jay said a while back that he did 6 or 7 new sets iirc. Though you probably have to buy GR for those, or that's my guess.I'd also like to see more costume items released for general use, apart from booster packs. It's been a while since we got anything more elaborate than a tights pattern as a "free" piece, hasn't it? I honestly haven't been keeping track.
As for other's. I don't know, I never felt like I was lacking new free stuff in this game. Granted since I15 it's been slow costume wise, but I16 we got power customization so I consider that huge update to costumes even if it's not actual pieces.
And since I16 the focus has been Going Rogue so really release on everything has slowed down. I17 was like something they just sort of put out to bridge the gap in how long it's been taking to get GR going. At one point they were talking about Q1 2010, that obviously didn't happen, but the point is, they've been busy with that so they haven't gotten to more free pieces, but I think they will after GR.
I need to lay down, I'm rambling. -
Just one?
There should be several of those in Praetoria, Paragon and the Rogue isles. It'd be fun for RP etc.
Also, there should be night time in pocket D. -
I'm all for more paid expansions. I think there are some big projects they could do that might only be do-able through paid expansions. (IE Expanding the shadow shard.) But I really like my several issues a year for free, and I'm not sure the Devs have the time or man power to do both.
For instance, Going Rogue, while I'm sure it will be epic, has cut into our free updates already. It's already July practically, the year is half over and we've only had one, relatively small (Though very cool) issue this year and that was a long time after the previous issue back in October. It's definately a much slower rate while their working on GR.
Fore the record: I'm not complaining. -
Quote:True. And we already know that the state of costume pieces can change for certain actions. Wings animate when flying, piston boots animate when jumping, rocket boots animate when flying. So it's not like the costume pieces have to be static by any means.A thought regarding scabbards/holsters:
The tech to have items that only appear in combat mode already exists - that's how weapons and combat auras work. Couldn't the "weapons" (really just handles) in the holsters have that same logic applied to them, inversely, so they only appear when not in combat? Then, when you entered combat and did the draw animations, the holstered weapons would disappear, and your real ones would appear in your hands. It would take some positioning work to make it look just perfect, but it should be possible.
Though I would really just settle for scabbards, holsters, quivers, etc that were just always full. -
I love this suggestion. I'd love to see poison proliferated to Corruptors, to blasters and defenders too. I know it's not a "heroic" set, but since heroes can go vigilante and villain now. (Well soon thy will.) And since from what they've said at the cons it seems like praetorians will be able to pick any AT and be either side, Defenders and Blasters don't have to be strictly heroic anymore.
-
I think this would be a really cool theme for a booster pack. Alternate animations and such. It'd also be a way to get funding to do that, since I'm sure it's hard to justify spending money on alternate animations for powers that are already animated. Also since they already did power customization I don't know how high a priority it is for them to revisit it. But if it's in the form of a booster that will net them more money, I think it'd work and I'd love to see more animations. Hopefully over a range though and not just martial arts based.
-
Quote:WIN!!That could be especially awesome alongside a device-based control set.
Hmm, stun grenades. Cryo grenades, web grenades. Tasers, caltrops, poison bomb, sticky bomb (something like glue arrow), flashbangs, some sort of oil slick, to make people fall or light on fire.
That could be a fantastic set, hell there's 9 powers right there. There you go devs, we started the work for you, just crunch the numbers, do the animations, set up the special affects, beta test it, tweak it and balance it, make a PVP version, beta test that too then call it a day. We practically did it for you.
Okay, seriously though, I would love to see some sort of devices control set for doms and trollers. And a martial arts set with shurikens and such for doms would be wonderful too. -
Quote:Yeah, but it has to be less work to un-animate the wings than it was to animate tails, and they did that.I'm not even sure it would be that hard. Depending on the mechanism the devs wanted to use, it could be creating a specific version of the wings that has the "in air" animation of simply being extended and still (just trim the rest of the animation off of the wing animations and leave them fully extended) or it could be a flight pose that leaves the wings extended rather than moving. It would be some degree of work, but, since most of the wings already have full animations and you could cannibalize those for the static wing animations, I'm not sure it would be a great load of work.
The most I can figure, it's likely one of those "not worth the effort" things: the devs probably think that there are not enough people interested in static wings to make the expenditure of time worth it.
It really seems simple. Use the wings they have now, (At the same attachment points they already use.) Make them not flap. They extended, they retract. That's it. I mean they've modeled the wings already, they just have to take the motion out. -
Quote:They could make both. Empty scabbard, full scabbard. It's essentially adding a handle to the scabbard.Sounds great. Do you want to carry around empty holsters/scabbards and have your pistols/weapon appear out of nowhere, or do you want to carry around a second weapon/set of weapons in a scabbard/holster that stays in the holster when you draw the useable ones? Both of those are very simple to make.
Honestly it would be really nice to have this. I've heard a few arguments against it but none really work as arguments against having it in game, they all work as arguments why a particular person wouldn't use them.
1.) Backpacks would interfere with capes.
Solution: Make them mutually exclusive in the back details section. Just like you can have wings or a cape but not both, it would be the same with backpacks.
2.) It looks odd since your weapons won't draw from them.
Solution: I don't care if my weapon draws from it or not, I think it would look great, I would use holsters, scabbards, quivers on at least one costume for 90% of my characters even the ones who don't use weapons.
3.) There would be this weapon attached to you that you couldn't use.
Solution: The official belt has a night stick and a gun on it that my characters can't use and yet it's one of my favorite belts. My characters don't need to be able to use the things attached to them, they are for flavor, and I think a lot of people would still like to have it, and it's already been proven to work in game, IE the Official belt piece.
Now I know some people have said their are technical limitations but I really don't know how much I buy that since they've done animated wings and tails attached to the back of the character, it's hard for me to believe stationary pieces like back packs, would really be that tough to do. Plus I don't recall ever hearing the Devs say this is the reason they haven't. I recall them saying it wouldn't work with capes before, but I've already pointed out the solution to that.
I think a pack for these items could be just the ticket, people who want it can pay for it and people who don't never have to have it clutter their costume creator. -
I've pretty much always wished teleport was more instant. I never liked the long animation time in the beginning or the long lag at the end.
The whole point of teleport is to move instantly but by the time you've done a 2-3 second animation and another 2-3 second hover, it's 6 seconds to move instantly.
I always wish it was more like Night crawler in XMen 2. Teleport over here, punch a guy in the face then immediately teleport and kick another guy in the knee etc.
I suppose then it wouldn't be a travel power, it'd be a combat power. But it would be nice. -
Now that there are animated tails and fixed position tails it's got me thinking about wings.
I'd love to see fixed Wings on characters so when you are flying your wings extend and just stay extended instead of flapping. Then when you land they fold back up again. It'd make it more of a gliding appearance but I think it would just be cool. Any chance we could get this? -
I was all set to jump in this thread and go off on how great the last two boosters were, but I agree with the point made here.
In fact just the other day I was thinking about how Maces and Axes in particular seem to have gotten the short end of the customization stick. They've gotten practically nothing added to them since the start while Swords, DB, Shields have gotten a lot of attention. I'd love to see more Mace and Axe Options in different varietys.
come to think of it, Bows could use some love too. -
That makes it sound like you guys already know what the next one will be. Will we find out soon? I'm very curious, can you give hints?
-
I'd love to see a Glider pack. Some sort of Jetpack\backpack with wings that extend for flight and fold back up when flight is off. Something sleek, aerodynamic and tech looking.
Of course you could also do something in steam punk, or mystical etc. A glider pack could work for a lot of things. -
Quote:Seems like they could just mast produce several different molds and do the clothes and painting individually, it would cut down on the price. There are sculptors who've done this for players, but it's expensive one-off type of stuff.
In the future, say with CoH 2, it would be nice if the Devs included some sort of export code that allowed for rapid prototyping (aka 3D printing) of figurines. I don't know if there is a standardization of code in that technology at the moment (probably not), but the costs have been coming down quite a bit over the past few years. A few years ago someone even figured out a way to do it with clay, so you can actually get a kiln-fired ceramic object from the process. I'd personally want a plastic figurine, but the wide scale of innovation from numerous materials to size (Audi uses RP to make some of their show cars) has really opened up the field.
I think it's only a matter of time before such a thing is offered en masse to MMO players.
IE Modern Male, Female, Giant molds, Fantasy Male, Female, Elf, Demon molds etc. -
Quote:That looks awesome, how\where did you get it done and what did it cost you?Did it awhile ago (well more of a statue than action figure), was a bit pricey though
Nuclear Toast actually was the first person I remeber having had a figure done, and IIRC several people have went out and purchased possable figures and reddressed them into thier characters.
http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/spectrestudios - David Johnson did the work for me and Nuke. I think he also has a page on Deviant Art under Spectre Studios -
Quote:Yeah but the Data is still there, it's just a matter of having a program to interpret it the right way. It wouldn't be that hard to simply build a small program that reads and interprets the Data in a costume save file and displays it correctly, then could save it in other formats, JPGs for instance. Heck the game already does screen shots of characters in JPG format, it's not that different.True, but the costume data is being saved from and loaded back to the CoH system. As far as I can understand that data can only be understood and and used by City of Heroes, and not any other program. The player computer is just being used to store the data. I'm thinking if you tried to load that costume data into some completely different system it might spit out something that looks completely different from the source.
Let me see if I can find the dev quote I'm thinking it was either BAB or Posi that might have said it
It's essentially the same thing people do with saved game editors. You build a program that reads the data the right way, then make that program able to manipulate the DATA.
IE: Program Reads Costume A, puts the dimensions in the right place, gives the fabrics the right weight. Baggy Shirt =Thickness 3 or Tights = Thickness 1 etc. You just need a program that can read the data then make adjustments to it to be used for sculpting and painting a figure, or putting tights on it or what ever.
Honestly if I knew how to program I might try and do it myself. But the theory\design aspect of it seems really simple. -
Quote:Honestly it was the most underwhelming of the packs IMO. I almost skipped that one myself but I really liked the new face details, I have several chars that use helmets and those new goggles and masks were wonderful.heh, don't feel bad, most of my characters are Magic or Natural oriented, very very very few tech/science/mutant.
I've bought all of the SBP except the Science one, I'd say that's my least favorite as it had nothing I really wanted.
Also I can't count how many times I've used the ability to change my chars body scales, height etc, easily very useful.
The emotes were cool too though I haven't really found a use for the costume change emotes, too long IMO, but still cool looking.
I thought I saw a post or interview from Positron not too long ago that after the origin packs they'd be looking at other themes for the Super Boosters. Though I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
Honestly if they kept with Origin themes I think they could do a lot of cool stuff. I'd love to see some holsters or backpacks, scabbards, sheaths, quivers, etc, that'd go great with tech or natural.
Though I kind of want to see what they would do with other themes, but as long as they keep releasing the goodies, I'll be happy. Though I'd like to see them a little more often, ideally like 1 pack every 2 months or so but I'm sure that'd cut into their time developing free issues which obviously are more important. -
So I gotta say mutant is my least favorite origin. I don't know why but all it ever makes me think of is people turning into animals or turtles or something. I know mutant can mean a lot more than that but it's just what I think of. I have a couple of "mutant" origins but kind of X-men like, just a couple cool powers and that's it.
So I have to say that Mutant was the pack I was least looking forward to and for a long time thought I might skip. Which is a big deal for me since I haven't skipped any so far and have bought pretty much every one of them, from Wedding pack to Valkyrie and all 4 super boosters within a few days of them going live.
Then I took a look at the Mutant costume pieces on the test server not long ago and I will say I was impressed. They were both not at all what I was expecting and both were very cool especially with the glowy-bits, though I honestly couldn't think of any character I wanted to use them on. But I was very impressed with the new Costume Change emotes, the power and the other emotes.
It went live, I bought it more for the costume change emotes and power than the costume pieces but wouldn't you know it, inspiration struck me when I was looking at the new pieces.
Both of my Kheldian's now have costume upgrades. I've been looking for a new look for my warshade. My peacebringer, well she got an impromptu update even though I though I was happy with all her costumes.
So this is all by way of saying, I've been converted, the Mutant Booster is fantastic, great job devs!
So what are the next round of super boosters going to be? No more Origin theme I assume, so any hints on what's coming next? -
