Who was the first...?
I don't know, but I kind of doubt it originated on these boards. I think that's one of those old old board traditions from elsewhere.
Dec out.
Who was the first to be "first post after a red-name." I've been curious to know where that all started, when, and if we know who started it.

does the website /. mean anything to you?

I never get to be "first post after a redname". I get to be "first post after Power". It's like being picked last for Dodgeball.
I once had a Red Name be first post after me. Beat that losers!

I think it originated in the WoW boards, where everyone would instantly rush to leap on the devs posts. They've gotten to the point where they're claiming "First page"

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.
It used to be rare to be the first post after a red name, but, after NCSoft bought out the IP and they became Paragon Studios, dev-posting became much more frequent. In fact, BAB's posting became so frequent that when folks FPARN!'d him, I quipped, "Being the first post after Back Alley Brawler is like taking a ticket in a deli; sooner or later, everyone's number is called." Someone then sigged it.

Point.
Okay: Back on the old dial-in green-screen Bulletin Board Systems, it used to be quite an achievement to be the first poster on any raised topic. Back in the days of 4600 or 9600 baud modems (V.27ter, V.32) you'd actually have BBS participants competing to see who could be the first to get the first post to a thread.
Yeah, it's stupid, but when you just dropped a few hundred quid on a brand new modem you could cook eggs on top of, you pretty much wanted to lord your newfound speed it over everybody else that you could.

The "First-Post" mini-game really found it's niche in the geek oriented news site Slashdot. At first it started out as a small time joke. Somebody managed to get the first post in the thread.
As Slashdot's traffic grew to the levels where it could generate it's own un-intentional DDOS, so did the possibility of landing a first post. So, back in the... I want to say late 90's or early 2000's, you'd actually have people competing to be the first poster on a Slashdot news post.
Again, yes, it was stupid. And annoying. It actually grew to the point of being so annoying that First Post comments are automatically moderated by Slashdot: http://slashdot.org/faq/com-mod.shtml
What's up with "First Post" comments? "First Post" comments are one of those odd little memetic hiccups that come out of nowhere and run amok. Basically, people with altogether far too much spare time sit and reload Slashdot, hoping that they will get the "First Post" in a discussion. This is one of those things that the moderation system was designed to clean up, and for the most part, it works. "First Post" comments usually get moderated down as off-topic almost instantly. |
The First Post After A Red-Name thing we see today on these forums is basically an extension of the old BBS game taken mainstream on Slashdot.
... no Calax.
It originated on Slashdot. Did I really need to spell that out? |
Honestly I'd never heard of slashdot, or any of that old stuff. It was informative but didn't have to be posted in such a volatile way.

You mean other than the fact that the link you posted looked more like a greek letter than anything?

That's sort of like going into a computer store and asking who Microsoft is.
I doubt Slashdot has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on advertising like Microsoft.

... you have seriously never heard of Slashdot, Slashdotting, or the Slashdot effect?
Technically, it's possible. It's just extremely unlikely.
Huh. I haven't heard of slashdot until now.
Uh huh. Looks like I need to pose the same question to you:

I could ask the folks at work (tech support) who'd heard of Slashdot, and maybe get one or two "er, who" responses (and then a pile of other sites, like Tom's Hardware, Ars Technica, etc. thrown out there.)
I could walk into a mall and ask the same thing, and get a lot of blank stares.
You know it, I know it. But it's hardly Facebook, which it seems everyone logs on to - even those who shouldn't be allowed near a computer. Being surprised people don't recognize it, even here, is simply a symptom of ... well, wearing blinders, or being too used to a specific subcommunity. I could mention BOFH and the PFY, and I'd be surprised if I got more than, say, 10-12 people going "oh, them, love that!" out of all the "who? What? Huh?" responses.
It's like min/maxers who don't get how people can *not* use - or even care about - IOs, DPS, etc, or RPers who don't get people who don't really care about the storyline and just want to blow things up, or Freedomites who don't get that people do actually transfer away from their server.
Uh huh. Looks like I need to pose the same question to you:

Where as Microsoft has been dumping millions and millions of dollars into ad campains for the past 15 years trying to convince people that Microsoft=home computing.
