IIRC correctly we'll be getting a graphics boost next year.

Was mentioned in one of Posi's interviews but my search-fu fails me right now.

Interview at TenTonHammer: http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/49237

Some hints at what's coming for next year, as well, now that the new staff are settled in
2. only need the one thread, so I'm looking this one. Original is linked earlier in the thread.

Its rather lame imho. Not only the costume, but more the mission teleporter.

Added, the client always been a 'free download', so basicly you can download the mac client and play with your own account right? So why make it mac-only for now?

[/ QUOTE ]

The Mac edition goodies are linked to account purchase, not the client or code. We'll have them available for those who do not purchase the Mac version as soon as possible after the Mac version is released.

As far as Sindrone's request, I'll need to ask.

And they have even laid of coh devs which is never a good sign.

[/ QUOTE ]

Source? This time last year when NCsoft was in the process of buying 100% rights to the City of Heroes franchise the CoH dev team consisted of 14 people. I'm not sure what the number is today, but I can tell you that it's over 30 people.

Positron has recently indicated that major updates to the game are on the way, supported by this growth in the team. 2008 has very much been a year of building the blocks for the future development of City of Heroes, including possible graphical updates. Quoting Matt 'Positron' Miller from a recent TenTonHammer interview:

[ QUOTE ]
"We’ve hired some new programmers to look into sprucing up our graphics," Matt answered. "The engine we use is actually very powerful, but we have been conscious of people’s machines and minimum specs on the game for a while now, so we haven’t really seen the true glory of what it is capable of. But I think it’s safe to say yes, players can expect to see graphical improvements."

[/ QUOTE ]

City of Heroes is a strong franchise, with an established community. This is a title that we're committed to for the long term.

New website! :D

I've been known to post to the forums using my mobile ... so yeah, I wouldn't want to see forum browsing via mobile become a problem.

I've visited vBulletin forums on my mobile before, though, and there's never been any problems.

I could not find any RSS feeds for the news or GR’s Hideout. I know I can drop the pages into Yahoo! Alerts or Google, but RSS would be better.

RSS is coming

Also browsing it from a mobile works okayish, but, for example, on the basic Nokia web browser the right-hand menus don’t work and in Opera mini they mix in together a bit. This is, obviously, a minor consideration, but it would be nice if the site degraded elegantly. (I will grumble a lot more if the new forums aren’t small browser friendly. )

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll ask, however I expect the answer will be that we've got much higher priority things to work on.

I believe the new forums, when they arrive, should work well in a mobile. At least as well as the current ones.

New website! :D

[ QUOTE ]
I think the main negative aspect of the site is that practically all the info needs updating. Take a look at the Rewards section of Game Guides. 'Salvage' refers to base salvage, invention salvage isn't mentioned (nor are inventions).

[/ QUOTE ]

We'll be going through all the content over the coming weeks and months with a fine tooth comb. If there's anything specific you want to point us towards, such as the salvage page, please feel free to email me and we'll get to it ASAP.

One of the things we'll be doing now we have the new site constructed and live is Proliferating the Powers section and adding the new powersets introduced since the section was created.

-What is the reason for the different layout for the media section compaired to the US?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because it's different? . Part of it will be because we use different back-end systems to the US, so what we can do and what they can differs in some respects.

-Updater shows the site on the 2nd page too. That can't be right to not show the legal stuff there...

Thanks for pointing that out, I've passed it along to get fixed. Should be all good again shortly.

This sucks - the last Fansite Alliance list was full of dead links and MASSIVELY out of date. Now it is being 'evaluated'. Let's hope that doesn't mean 'removed because it's too much effort to maintain'.

[/ QUOTE ]

We do a pass for dead links every few months, the previous one just a couple of months ago. I'll have another look through now. The multiple entries will be because the lists for CoH and CoV were merged; the probability of duplicate entries was overlooked. I'll get on that right away. In the meantime, I can assure you that the ability to submit new sites will return as soon as we have a streamlined system for submission and acceptance of new sites.
9. [ QUOTE ]
This isn't your computer or Vista/nvidia related (don't let them tell you otherwise)

[/ QUOTE ]

There has been a known issue with Vista + nVidia graphics cards for City of Heroes and other games in recent months. When a game closes with a windows popup stating that the graphics driver crashed, then it's reasonably easy to find the culprit. The Vista + nVidia issue is absolutely verified, although it does not effect all players equally.

It sounds like Lycon's crash may be unrelated, however I had to ask.

[ QUOTE ]
I run both Vista 32, and a GeForce 9400GT Nvidia card. They worked fine until about 3 patches ago, since then things like power lag, server synch problems and since the last patch major crashes. I have done everything to try and sort this.

[/ QUOTE ]

Any specifics on the crashes? What error messages etc are you receiving?

For both of you: have you contacted the support team?
10. [ QUOTE ]
I dont particularly mind the time to get them if its across the board, but I do object that all of the alts I dont use, get the badges, yet the ones I play regularly cant get them as I have logged them on and played, yet these are the ones I have collected badges on.

[/ QUOTE ]

Can't get them? Unless you keep them logged on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, they *will* get them. You do not need to leave a character logged out continuously to get the badges. Any time spent logged off, no matter how long or short, is counted. For example:

1. You logged out in Day Job Location A last time you played.
2. 12 hours later you log in. You have earned 12 hours worth of progression towards the badge.
3. You play for 5 hours before logging out in the same location.
4. After 7 hours you log in with the same character. This 7 hours is added to the existing 12.
5. Your character now has 19 hours worth of progression.

A regularly played character will progress towards the badges at a slower rate, yes, but to say that they "can't" get them is completely wrong. As someone else noted above, if you have alts and play them all reasonably frequently you won't take more than a day or two longer to get the badges than a character that is never played.
11. Let's see...

[ QUOTE ]
like constant mapservers

[/ QUOTE ]

These can be caused by any number of variables. Some within our control, many not. Data travelling between you and the servers passes through multiple ISPs, and a fault at any one of those (or the link between any two) is beyond our control to prevent.

[ QUOTE ]
like crashes

[/ QUOTE ]

The client crash identified at Issue 13 release was fixed within 12 hours. If you're referring to the nVidia+Vista crash ... we've been working on it, but again this is something not entirely within our control.

[ QUOTE ]
like the physics, opponents getting trapped behind walls or in them and being unhittable, leading to missions not being able to be finished. This was fixed previously and has now reared its head again.

[/ QUOTE ]

Report them, and the team will investigate and see about further fixes.

[ QUOTE ]
like syncing, ok so now we can type /sync, but should we really have to keep doing it over and over? Surely the game servers should be repaired or replaced instead, not have a plaster put on the problem.

[/ QUOTE ]

This is a thorny one, and continues to be investigated. Unfortunately there has been no pattern discerned in the information we've seen from customers affected that would point to what is actually causing it. Some people have fixed it with hardware or software changes at their own end (for example changing router brand or updating router firmware, changing AV/firewall software). Those same fixes haven't worked for others who are affected. /sync was added so that players affected could continue to play while we continue to try to trace this well-hidden issue down.
12. Hi all,

Please see this thread:

http://uk.boards.cityofheroes.com/sh...Number=1279079

If you have been affected, disabling your antivirus / NOD32 will not resolve the issue immediately (or prevent it from recurring, as many firewalls are *not* completely disabled when you disable them), as the program has caused modification to one or more files and these files will need to be re-downloaded by the launcher.
13. If you have NOD32 installed you will need to also configure or disable the IMON feature in that program by doing the following:

<ul type="square">[*]Open the NOD32 program[*]Click on IMON -&gt; Setup -&gt; General[*]In the column "Exceptions," click on "Modify"[*]Make sure that cohupdater.exe and cityofheroes.exe are added as exceptions or disable the IMON feature altogether.
If the errors persist after this you could try temporarily uninstalling your firewall software.

Next, if you still see checksum errors, delete the file coh.checksum, then find the file that the checksum is failing on, such as cityofheroes.exe in the game’s root directory, or player.pigg in the Piggs directory and delete that file as well. Once deleted run the updater again, and the files should download properly.
14. We are continuing to get reports via support and our forums that some of you are experiencing trouble with the patching process. To assist you in this matter our Tech Support Specialists have given us the following information for you to help troubleshoot your issues:

Most of these issues are caused by software firewalls blocking the update, or after the update occurs, the firewall ‘quarantines’ files that it thinks are possibly malicious due to them having changed.

The first thing that should be done is check your firewall configuration:

Make sure that both cohupdater.EU.exe and cityofheroes.exe are added as trusted programs, with full access to the Internet. Sometimes old entries remain, so you may need to remove all current entries for these applications and re-add a new one. Disabling the software does not always allow free access across your program files.

If you are still experiencing an issue after configuring your security software, temporarily uninstalling your security software, and deleting the game files that are causing an error, please submit a question to our Technical Support Team here: Ask A Question. The support team will address the issue on an individual basis. Please include the following information so that we may better assist you.

We have a small utility that will run traceroutes, pathpings, and port tests to our servers; please run this test so that we will have some data regarding your connection. Make sure that you are connected directly to your modem during this process. To download the network tool, please browse to the following link: Network Tool

Right-click the "netinfotool" file and choose Save As. Save the file to your desktop. After the download is complete, double-click the file on your desktop. Follow the on-screen prompts. The tool will take from 5-15 minutes to run. It will create two new files, one named "EULA" and one named "network_data_coh", in the same folder where you saved the test utility. Please include this file in your support question.

Please also send us as much of the following information as possible:

<ul type="square">[*]A thorough description of the problem, including the exact text of any error messages received.[*]What type of connection do you have (cable, DSL, dial-up)?[*]Are you on a home, campus, or business network?[*]Are you using a router?[*]Who is your Internet service provider?[*]Where are you located?[*]Are you connecting through a router or hub? If so, what is the name and model number?[*]What firewall software do you have installed?
15. Hi all,

I know a few people here in Europe have experienced this issue as well, so I'm reposting a thread from the US forums where Ex Libris has published some information from our support teams on problems that can be caused after an issue release or patch.

It is especially important that you read both posts if you use NOD32, as this specific program is known to commonly cause problems by registering false positives after City of Heroes updates.
16. Hi all,

This is an unintended side-effect of other changes. We'll be adding the below to the known issues list:

<ul type="square">[*]Currently, any mission that can be accessed via Flashback, and any mission in a shared zone that is available only to Heroes or Villains, can only be selected as the active mission of a team if every member of that team is in the same zone.
17. Can you test this by monitoring your actual experience gain, please? It may simply be that the message is missing but the exp is still awarded.

But by your own admission you're thick. Why trust the logic of someone like that.

/rimshot

[/ QUOTE ]

Just because he has it in his sig does not mean you can use it on the forums like that. Discuss the issue, not the person/people on the opposing side please.
19. I'm guessing, but it looks like your antivirus has picked up a false positive while CoH was updating. If the AV altered a file, even minimally, when it did so then this will have caused the invalid checksum result.
20. [ QUOTE ]
...it seems to be a stealth insert.

[/ QUOTE ]

Just commenting on this quickly: the idea of "stealth" changes in a patch is a myth in the vast majority of cases.

If it's a deliberate change then its absence from the patch notes is a simple oversight. There's over 4500 words worth of patch notes there, and you can be sure the raw notes they were created from were enormous. I've been that person who has to compile patch notes before - it's phenomenally easy to overlook things, including major features that were announced publicly prior to the update. Take the notes you have seen: these are the polished notes, with extraneous and duplicate material removed. Now multiply those notes by a factor of at least 10 to get a start for knowing what the raw changelog might have looked like in terms of size.

If it isn't a deliberate change, then it's a bug.

It's that simple.

On the topic of this particular undocumented change, I'll ask and see what I can find out.
21. [ QUOTE ]
Where *are* the patch notes? I didn't think they'd been released yet?

[/ QUOTE ]

They were, this morning . Announcements forum and the website. Linked from the Launcher as well, now .

23. Can you share any further information about the crash you were receiving? Were there any crash dialogues?

Is your system running Vista, and are your graphics card drivers current? There have been issues related to Vista + nVidia graphics in recent months caused by the graphics drivers crashing.

Are you running in SLI mode while playing? This has also been known to cause some issues.

Finally ... there was a client crash introduced with the launch of Issue 13 yesterday that has now been resolved. Is the problem persisting today?
24. Global should now be back up. It looks like there was a hardware fault of some sort, and we've moved global onto new hardware while they look into the cause further. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Friends List...

Guys, there's a thread for Global - please use that one for the Global issue.

Question for those with the friends-list-that-won't-stay-down:

Have you got your list pinned or unpinned from the chat panels? I had mine unpinned and it refused to stay down. When I pinned it and then hid it, it didn't re-pop again. If you have the constantly popping up friends list, could you test this out a bit? Might help the team with tracking down the bug.
