Quote:I'll put in a vote for RuneScape. If you can live with the low-end graphics and the slow gameplay, it has a wonderful sense of humor. If you want to grind you can, but I played for years without and had plenty of fun and accomplished a lot and had a wonderful character. There is an issue with the young people playing it because you can play for free, but if you shell out the money there are many fewer paying kids.fancy something a bit fantasy-ish, I think. I've tried WoW and WAR and AION, and they all blow massive chunks IMO. They're slow, grindy, punitive to casual players and the playerbase seems to be largely comprised of kids.
What I'm after, I think, is something like CoH but with orcs lol.
Can anyone recomend another MMO to play that isn't a horrible grindfest, doesn't rely predominantly on outdoor killquests, and that has travel powers or mounts that make travel as fast and simple as it is in CoH?
I don't care for PvP either.

Thinking about the Achilles Heel -Res proc and the Chance for Neg Damage proc it appears that the -Res in Soldiers is really the best choice, but is it better to slot both and lose a smidge on the other mods or max out base damage, recharge, and accuracy?
-
I'll second the comment about this not being as useful to new players due to the cost.
Also, wouldn't you be better served moving 4 slots out of combat jump and 3-slotting Zephyr into both Super Speed and Super Jump for the defense bonuses? -
Quote:As a player who could use such a resource, what would be helpful to me is to break it into chunks based on level. Rather like the way Oroboros is grouped. Doesn't have to be in equal sized ******, but breaking it out like that would help me say "hmm this character is level 23, let me check and see what I don't want to miss in his range".Yes, but I'm not quite sure what would actually improve readability rather than representing pointless chrome. Any suggestions? The redside contacts are a bit of a mess given that the format was intended originally for blueside contacts where only a few of them have arcs to offer.
Having it all in one long list is rather like a wall of text forum post. I need the framework to help sort it out and make sense of it quickly when I'm doing two things at once.
Thanks for making this resource! -
Quote:Tanks as squishy as mine get really frustrating to play with after a few minutes. So do corruptors who deal defender-level damage and Brutes who faceplant every 4th spawn. Then you don't suck.
I couldn't give a hoot about the skill of those I play with provided I enjoy playing with them.
Always beware of a character under level 40 with multiple debt badges.
And the advice the others gave about having a badge character and others with a lot fewer is good advice to keep in mind. -
Thanks, appreciate the thoughts and the help with Suckerpunch. On my leveling build I have a lady grey in my soldiers, but I've heard it's buggy. Is that still true?
Should get the achilles heel eventually, I've had bids out for various levels of it for about a month, still haven't managed to actually buy one.
On petrifying gaze, I was kind of mixed. I'm thinking of going leviathan mastery and using that hold instead since it packs some very nice extras for only 1 more endurance and 3 seconds longer recharge. Plus I just like the sharks =). The armor is certainly nice as well. Dark mastery fits better thematically.
I have one of the defense aura for pets IOs, but not the resist one yet. Worth using somewhere? I leveled with it an maneuvers, figuring they'd at least be a smidge better than nothing and stack well with any Soldiers of Arachnos I team up with. But I don't team all that often hehe. -
I'm looking to respec my Marc/Dark Mastermind and I really have no idea where to start. Right now I have 90% SOs and 10% random IOs from levels 15 to 45 that I found on the way. Please don't recommend Mids because I use a Mac so it is not an option. =)
What set bonuses are even important? I'm not looking to solo AVs, I typically play on -1/x3 with bosses turned off. Just looking to get the kill speed up so I can run on +1/x4 with bosses turned on and not sit there being bored watching some Freakshow Tank (or any other boss with massive S/L resists) pretend my boys are trying to give him a massage.
Not looking to be a tankermind either but I could use some tips on keeping the idiots alive. From what I can tell, set mods only help me so maxing defences only goes so far. Recharge is only somewhat important: helps get double tar patches and fears, but beyond that, I'm not seeing the value--am I missing something?
Before I look into what powers and pools I want to aim for, what kinds of set bonuses are most useful to the merc/dark combo? -
Quote:So you are saying there is a rule that says you don't earn any progress toward your day job badges if you log in before the badge gets earned? You are not "Not playing your main character". You are playing your main character. And all your others are earning badges at the same time. Then when you log into an alt, you have two characters earning badges at once without dual boxing!Totally the wrong way to think about it. This is the "Badges and Gladiators forum". To NOT play your main character for over a year in order to get these badges is a ridiculous idea in the first place.
Isn't it great?
By the way, I totally agree the time is too long on them. But nothing about them says you can't play your main. If you literally do the exact same thing you did before the day jobs were invented, you are not penalized in any way, you just get bonuses. -
Quote:What about the Vanguard Rangers from Gaussian's Arc? Those guys definitely aggro from farther away than normal. As far as I'm aware, this is pretty much how all units with increased "perception" work. There are Nemesis snipers with an ACTUAL increased perception which allows them to aggro from farther away. This generally only applies to snipers.
But most units, like drones, knives, and overseers have normal "perception radius," yet will still see you even if you exceed that value. In other words, they can't see from farther away and won't aggro from farther away (unlike snipers), but once you come in range they'll still attack you. Rikti drones have normal perception radius, and it can be reduced with smoke grenade. But if I come near them with 70 stealth, they see me anyway.
Or to make it easier, pretty much all units have normal perception. Snipers have extra, which allows them to see farther and aggro from farther away. Then there are units like drones and such that flat out ignore stealth and will see you anyway. -
Quote:Totally the wrong way to think about it. You say "main" which implies you have alts. Think about it this way: Your main is earning badges while you play your alt. And while you sleep. And while you're at work. And while you're in the shower. All things you do anyway. You change no behavior of your own, just play the game exactly like you did before day jobs, and you get an extra bonus out of it.Agreed.
NOT playing my main for over a year (462 days) just to get the Day Job badges seems counterintuitive to having a main that's trying to get badges
7 days each... max. That's still almost half a year of NOT playing your badge collector just to get... badges.
I have 23 characters. The fact that 22 are accomplishing something while I play the 23rd is not a problem for me. It's not like there is some rule about not being allowed to play your main until you have all the badges accumulated.
How did Ziggy put it? "My glass may be half empty but at least there will be less to clean up when I spill." -
Just out of curiosity, how do teams work with regards to Oro merits? I've never managed to talk anyone into joining me so I have no idea. Can two people do an arc together and both get merits the same as you can if you do it together when you both have the contact?
-
Yes he is, which is why if even he can't manage to get them, it's not just "the oldest" players who can, no one can. They are, for all intents and purposes, as unobtainable as the 1st year veteran badges.
-
Two of the other badges are also pretty much impossible (the one for reporting bugs and the one for moving between Europe/America). I think even Beefcake is missing both of those.
-
A more accurate analogy of the thoguht process is to say "why level, just wait until they reduce the level cap".
-
Quote:If you ever made that assumption of one of my characters, I apologize for letting you down. Most of mine are well over 150 badges some getting up on 400. And I suck. I am helpful and friendly. Just pretty useless and incompetent. If a character has a TON of badges, i generally tend to think that the person must be at least half decent too and tend to have a more positive outlook on them [is that wrong of me?].
A couple of years ago, i'ld think that 100 was a LOT of badges, but its got to be at least 200 now before you can look at a player in that regard these days i think, what with the speed you can get up to 200 now. -
One other factor to consider. If you nuke alot, the +recovery mods become useless for the duration of the "no recovery" debuff. But the Performance Shifter proc keeps working.
This doesn't matter to most characters, but every once in a while it is important. -
Quote:I always chuckle when games misuse the "pst" which is short for "please send tell". Some games have "whisper" or other words for private communication ,and nearly everyone says "Please PST". Kind of like "Please RSVP". Hehe.Personally I find it fascinating that games have an actual etymology, and one specific to that game. In CoX we have "afk for bio", which came from "biobreak", which came from "biological break", which was a joke someone cracked instead of saying "bathroom break." I can't off the top of my head think of some of the others we use but I know there are.
The QFT here is "quoted for truth" whereas every other game I've seen it used it is the exact opposite as "Quit F#$%^ng Talking". Man that one confused the heck outta me when I first came to these forums.
We have respec, whereas most games have retrain.
Can't think of any others myself though. -
Quote:That is a halloween event reward. There are similar rewards for the winter event (ear muffs, winter gloves, etc), valentines day, and others.Ahh, thanks much for the Wiki page, that's exactly what I was looking for. But it seems like those aren't ALL of them, right?
That is, last night on my Tanker I was killing zombies and got a badge that unlocked a pumpkin-head costume piece, and that wasn't on the list. Thanks again!
Also, the veteran badges are badges and they all give a costume or power or something. -
Or you partner a lot with a friend who likes Vengeance and Fallout (If I am remembering the Rad power that triggers off of a friendly corpse correctly).
-
As an alternative, crafted Hammi O-type enhancements that give two mods but aren't in a set. Although, I do like that the HOs are special for that reason.

Quote:Really, there aren't so many more examples from other games. Interactive terrain you can break is really a biggie, minigames are another, and that's about it that any game anywhere has. The only other differences are variations on what is already listed. Clicking items on the ground in WoW for a collection quest? No different from glowies except the ones in WoW don't glow. Whacking peons in the orc start zone? No different from the PvP patrol missions in CoH except for the humor and the animation. There are tons of examples from other games which could be examples.
Now, riding a giant in the frozen wastelands and using it's powers instead of your own? Very cool minigame. Or RuneScape's soduko puzzles as a minigame for a locked chest you need to open, and their anti-farming minigames? Very fun.
But in terms of mission mechanics, just giving different clothing to the same action isn't really a big deal to me and 90% of the differences come down to "different clothing - same action". That said, my biggest desire would be some voice overs and more animation.
Only finally getting a huge body type for females comes close to my desire for in game voices. -
For the OP and anyone else who doesn't know, it usually only takes one apocalypse event (either flavor) to get all related badges. And the zombie apocalypse badges are available year-round. If it helps you budget your time or plan your badge hunting.

If it helps with data for you, a few months ago (I am a bad marketer and didn't pay attention to when, but I'm guessing late August) I sold out all my Halloween salvage stock for 300-350k each item.
On a similar note, if you have candy canes: wow. I'm seeing spikes of over 1 million per cane right now. Anyone know if the prices will keep going up or is this about the height of it?
Wishing I'd saved up more last year but I was too much of a newb then to realize the value. -
Quote:These two right here are the biggies for me.2) If you put in bids a week before you need them, and carry the ones you get early, you can sometimes get serious bargains at Wentworth's on generics.
3) If you want a slightly more complex approach, a set IO that does two things (Acc/Dam, or Defense/End, or whatever) does each of them about 2/3 as well as a generic; one that does three things does each of them about half as well.
Which means if you slot a Ruin Acc/Dam/Rech and a Thunderstrike Acc/Dam/Rech, both level 35, in a ranged damage power (they won't go into anything else- one of the many harsh learning experiences some people have) you get about 36% Acc, 36% Dam, and 36% Recharge. In two slots. Those are fairly cheap IO's- it'll cost you maybe six SO's each for them.
I find that I can loot at least a few IOs that are useful and thanks to salvage drops only require a few tens of thousands in Inf to "finish" the requirements to craft. If you find everything or nearly everything you need to craft an IO, you might as well do it. They are more powerful than SOs, and they never expire. Spending on them, many people like to wait. But if they fall into your lap, why pass up the opportunity?
And while the numbers at level 35 are as Fulmens points out, dual and triple Crafted IOs start totaling higher than 36% a fair bit earlier than level 35. Late 20's if I recall correctly. Higher levels just make them more and more valuable. If you care about the set bonuses, then you want to research some about how exemplaring will impact them. That bit gets confusing. -
Redlynne, can you publish that build in a way that someone on a Mac can see it? We can't use Mids. I'm curious to see it.
