  1. I've been seeing a large increase in the number of Temp Power drops as well. In fact, I have gotten multiples of temp powers I had never even seen before. Definitely seems like they increased the drop rate on Temp Powers. As for any decrease to Purple Drops, I can't say I have noticed any significant drop there, but I don't get a lot anyway.
  2. And lest anyone think this is just a Euro thing, the US servers are in the same state at the moment. I do think I know the reason for the delay though. The newly introduced Powerset is strictly for Masterminds, which are villains, and everone knows the Devs Hate Villains.

You actually need to be careful with blowing the machine out with compressed air. This is especially true if there is a large amount of dust in the machine. The dust being blown around can generate static electricity which can ruin components.

There really isn't a better and safer way to clean the machine out. The point is that this may actually be what lead to the problem to begin with.

Shot in the dark here... are you on a trial account? If so, you can not access AE directly. If you find someone nice standing around, you CAN ask them to invite you to a team, start the arc for you, and then quit the team, but trial accounts can not actually start arcs.

Yes, this restriction seems a bit silly, but that restriction as well as others on trial accounts are designed to, among other things, make it difficult for RMT companies to use trial accounts for farming, muling, spamming, etc.
  8. I am no lawyer, but I actually had occasion to submit a trademark registration back in the 90s. As I recall, a name can NOT be "Copyrighted", it can only be Trademarked. Even then, trademarks are context sensitive. So. while having a flying hero with Super Strength, Flight, Laser Eyes, and a Cold Based Breath Cone breath (if such a combination were even possible) named Superman is an obvious Trademark violation. Having an Empath named Dr. Pepper is not, UNLESS you do something which obviously implies a link between your character and the soft drink. Furthermore, if you you are using a name prior to it being registered as a trademark, you can continue to use it, provided again that you do not attempt to imply some link between yourself and the registered trademark holder.

Now keep in mind the following statements in mind...

    1) As I stated, I am not a lawyer.
    2) My statements are based on my memory of my own experience in the early 90s. My memory may be faulty, the law may have changed in the last 20 years, or both.
    3) Even if my memory is correct, and the laws are unchanged, NC Soft has sole discretion on what names are acceptable and what names are not. Their servers. Their responsibility. Their call. They are more likely to err on the side of caution.

As fate would have it, at one time I had one of my own characters generic named using a name which IS in fact Trademarked, but which *I* am the trademark holder of. However, in the context of a superhero/supervillain environment, I can see how it is definitely in the grey area, so I get it.
  9. That actually sounds like a firewall issue. The black area you are seeing is actually a mini web browser that displays a dedicated webpage specifically formatted for the client. The fact that it is empty and your client is "looping" indicates something going on with either the software firewall on the PC or a hardware firewall in your router (if you are using one).

What you describe also sounds like something which is currently occurring with the TEST client which connects to the test servers. If you downloaded the client from a link to an NC Soft site, it should have installed the LIVE client for you. Unfortunately, the line which identifies if you are using the the live client or the test client shows up exactly where the "Checking Updater" line is as the next "step".

If you did NOT download the client from NC Soft directly, then I HIGHLY suggest you follow THEIR link to the client software.

The client actually opens several connections using different ports, some of which are TCP and others which are UDP. Once you login, it opens different connections on different ports. While they won't use every single port in the pool, it needs to be able to use any of them it chooses to. For a full list of which ports you should ensure the client has access to, read this support document from NC Soft. There are 5 different TCP ports and 101 different UDP ports that it MAY use.

I know someone else is bound to ask for it if this doesn't help you, so you may wanna go ahead and post a HiJack This report from your system, as well as a dump from COH Helper.

The problem with doing an engine update as an expansion is that the gaming engine is the foundation on which the rest of the code is built. If you do a new engine as an expansion, then you need to maintain two different sets of code. One set for those who bought the expansion and are using the new engine. One set for those who did not purchase the expansion and are using the old engine. Essentially, maintaining two different clients, making sure that both are tested on multiple platforms to ensure cross-platform support, and using multiple configurations to make sure there are no changes which force you to upgrade your minimum system requirements.

Even doing this with one client is a chore. How many times over the years have there been issues which affect specific video cards or even specific video driver versions?

This does, of course, leave the option of an upgraded engine as part of a future Issue rollout. Due to the costs of modifying all the art and all the code to work with a new engine though, that is not a realistic expectation. If it were realistic, we would probably have already seen an engine upgrade.

I will say that Paragon Studios has done some amazing work with CoH, some of which were, at one point, believed by Cryptic to be impossible to do, due to limitations of the gaming engine. My hat goes off to them.

However, if an entire engine upgrade, either as an expansion or as an issue were logistically and fiscally feasible, we probably already would have seen one, or be looking at one with Going Rogue.
  13. I want to clarify something...

    I do NOT hate Commander.

I do NOT even DISLIKE Commander.

I don't know him well enough to dislike him, and certainly not enough to hate him. He may be a great guy. There may be many many things that he and I are in perfect agreement on. The points I have tried to make in my posts in this thread are, obviously, not among them.

Based on his statements in this thread, I am of the belief that he does not possess the qualities it takes to be a good moderator. Key among these is objectivity. Anyone who feels they should wield power and never be questioned has no leadership skills. Based on rule #2 in his posted list (the first time it has ever been pointed to on a wide scale to my knowledge), it appears that the moderators of the VU* channels as a whole hold the same misconception and only further indicate that these channels are not for me. The policy of quietly discussing disagreements with another mod is inherently flawed by a lack of objectivity on the part of the mods. Let's say someone had a problem with Kegan. They quietly and respectfully send a tell to Commander--who has already indicated in this thread is a close RL friend. Do you really think there is any chance at all that Commander is going to be objective? The only PROPER action for Commander to take in a situation like that would be to explain his friendship with Kegan and suggest the person go to a different channel mod. Given the overwhelming zest with which he jumped into this thread to side with Kegan (before getting all the facts), I don't see that as a likely action.

I also wish to make an apology to Commander. Like him, I am quite tired. Have been tired for several hours now, but can't sleep. It was wrong of me to call him "dense". It is the argument which was dense, and not the person. I do sincerely apologize for that statement. Like I said before, I accept responsibility for my words, and when an apology is due, an apology is given. Being tired is an excuse, but it is not a reason.

I see, and who were you telling to "Stop playing the innocent card" and then going into a discussion about not exposing 13 year olds to porn sites (a point which I wholeheartedly agree with... don't be giving porn to the kiddos).

According to your arguments, nothing in your post was actually directed at the original poster except perhaps the "Stop playing the innocent card." After all, the entire rest of the post is about the link, not anything the original poster said or did. If that is the case, the comment makes no sense whatsoever. Because, if that is the case, the original poster wasn't playing any "card". He stated the facts about what he himself did. He accepted responsibility for that. He has done so again in other posts in this thread.

This is something that you have failed to do. Preferring instead to protect your "I am always right. No matter what" stance. It's really quite pitiful.

I can see your mind is set and I'm not looking to change it. I'm trying to give my point so that not everything I say is met with a judgement of character based on the structure of a thought.

So if someone throws a match and a forrest catches fire, it's the tress fault that the fire continues to spread?
Are you really that dense? The trees didn't DO ANYTHING. The person who posted the link is their OWN PERSON...with their OWN BRAIN... who makes their OWN DECISIONS.... and needs to bear the RESPONSIBILITY of those actions, not someone else who makes a, to be quite honest, mild comment.

And to be honest, IIRC the OP made his comment to someone else who was discussing ERPvP. Wouldn't it be THAT person who "started the fire" to use your phrase? Shouldn't it be THAT person gets the boot?

Are you REALLY trying to tell me that you were asking KEGAN about the link or telling KEGAN to stop playing the innocent card?? This would be the same Kegan that you, later in the same post, agree with saying (and this is not a direct quote, but is close enough) "Like Kegan said, smarten up"?

You are just digging yourself deeper.

As for him being responsible for the fact that someone ELSE posted a link in response to his comment, that's BEYOND ludicrous. You really want to hold him responsible for something SOMEONE ELSE did? Wow... yeah, I think you're pretty much helping me make up my mind on the whole "Should I stay or should I go?" thing if that's how you think things should be run. Especially with no warning to him whatsoever.

You ask the original poster... "What about the link to the porn site?"

You tell the original poster... "Stop trying to play the innocent card."

There is nothing to be misinterpreted there Commander. You were wrong to accuse him of it because he not do it. Yes, it is true that you did not have all of the facts yet, but that is all the more reason you should never have publicly accused him. Being a channel mod has a bit of responsibility that comes along with it. You clearly refuse to accept responsibility for your own actions and instead want to make BS excuses which do not hold water, and clearly are not based in anything even vaguely resembling the actual truth.

Now clearly there is ONE possible way I am misinterpreting that post. It is possible that you were not addressing the OP, but were addressing another post in this thread. If this is the case, please point me to the proper post, and I will gladly admit that I was wrong. You see, I am mature. I am responsible. I do not skirt my responsibility. I do not make excuses for my actions. I accept responsibility for every word I speak, be it in person, on the radio, on a forum, or anywhere else. When I am wrong, I say I am wrong. When someone is due an apology from me, they get one.
  18. Sorry Commander, I was really trying to see your side to this whole thing. I mean, I am all for free speech, but the fact of the matter is NO moderated channel is a public forum. The moderators have every right to decide what is and is not appropriate for discussion in that channel, just as any newspaper publisher has every right to decide what will and will not be published in that paper, and just as NC Soft has every right to decide what can and can not be discussed on these forums. They own them. It's they who set the rules.

My problem is with your own postings in this thread. First, in this post, you accuse the original poster of posting a porn link in the VU Channel, and you indicate that the link was the real reason for the ban...

Which indicates that the OP was banned for the single comment and not the the link as you originally implied.

The mature and responsible thing to do would have been to admit your mistake publicly, just as you publicly accused the OP, wrongly, of posting the link.

Even if you feel the comment, in and of itself was enough, you should at least be man enough to apologize for the MULTIPLE times that you and other channel mods have accused the OP of posting the link through out this thread.

The fact that you are blind to this fact and, by all appearances, oblivious to the logic of why it should make any difference leads me to believe that you lack any significant understanding of the true meaning of leadership--and while channel mods are not "leaders", it does take good leadership SKILLS to be an effective channel mod. If you are indicative of the other channel mods, and those that have made their presence known in this thread would certainly make it appear that way, I am not sure I even WANT to be on the VU channels anymore.
  19. WARNING: This post is slightly technical. If you aren't a net geek it is likely to make your eyes bleed. Proceed at your own risk.

In trying to trouble shoot the speed issue last night I was poking around in my router. I noticed that the packets were being identified as Teredo packets. Teredo is a tunneling protocol which embeds IPv6 packets in UDP packets for transmission over an IPv4 network, such as the Internet.

This identification was, presumable because of the fact that it was using UDP packets on the ports typically used by Teredo. It got me thinking though, so I decided to stop the "IP Helper" service, which is a service which runs under Windows 7 which allows you to use Teredo and other protocols to implement new IPv6 technologies over the internet. I figured the problem may be a problem with conflicting ports, in which case stopping the service should remove any confusion and allow things to move along smoothly.

Unfortunately, that does not appear to be the case. Stopping the service had no effect on the download speed.

Part of the reason there is the way the rep system works (at least as far as I can tell). It doesn't look like it's strictly a # of Pos - # of Neg = Total Rep. It appears instead that the higher a person's rep is, the more of an impact their own ratings have. So if you have 10 positive and 1 Negative but the positives are all from low rep folks, and that 1 negative is from someone with super high rep, your total rep can still be negative.

Let's see... the version being tested is a different version of the client. Therefore, you need a different client to do the testing. The alternative would be to have everyone running the test client, and therefore untested code which is likely to be incompatible with the live servers.

If it were simply a case of a different server version, but the client wasn't changed, then yes, this would be feasible. Beyond that though...

As for the snails pace downloads, I can tell you that it is not the "norm" when setting up the test client. Normally the pace is a little closer to what it takes to patch the live client. Not sure what the issue is, but a lot of folks are seeing it.

Of coruse, they still make red stuff, but I really don't think they're ever going to spend as much time on that as blue and co-op stuff.
The problem is, since the release of CoV (Issue 6), Blue Side has seen entire new zones, complete zone revamps, etc. The Red Side has seen a few minor changes (adding a respec contact to Port Oakes, for example), but hasn't seen anything completely revamped and certainly no new contact, except for co-op content.

Ultimately, it's all wishful thinking as the new baby in the family (Praetoria) will be getting most of the attention, and the 5 year old and the 3 year old are going to have to deal with some jealousy issues for w little while, although the things like the posi tf revamp and such are a nice touch and still show some love for what's already there.
That remains to be seen. Even when CoV was the "new baby" it never got any real attention, content wise. I am not going to count on Praetoria being any different in that respect.
