Trial account Checking Updater problem.
That actually sounds like a firewall issue. The black area you are seeing is actually a mini web browser that displays a dedicated webpage specifically formatted for the client. The fact that it is empty and your client is "looping" indicates something going on with either the software firewall on the PC or a hardware firewall in your router (if you are using one).
What you describe also sounds like something which is currently occurring with the TEST client which connects to the test servers. If you downloaded the client from a link to an NC Soft site, it should have installed the LIVE client for you. Unfortunately, the line which identifies if you are using the the live client or the test client shows up exactly where the "Checking Updater" line is as the next "step".
If you did NOT download the client from NC Soft directly, then I HIGHLY suggest you follow THEIR link to the client software.
The client actually opens several connections using different ports, some of which are TCP and others which are UDP. Once you login, it opens different connections on different ports. While they won't use every single port in the pool, it needs to be able to use any of them it chooses to. For a full list of which ports you should ensure the client has access to, read this support document from NC Soft. There are 5 different TCP ports and 101 different UDP ports that it MAY use.
I know someone else is bound to ask for it if this doesn't help you, so you may wanna go ahead and post a HiJack This report from your system, as well as a dump from COH Helper.

I have checked that all major ports are forwarded, so that should not be the issue. I have downloaded the client from IGN, and also the NC soft site multiple times. firewalls were my first stop, and even though it was not on there, once I had put it all through, the same problem was still persistent.
I am really hoping this can be fixed, I am dying to play this game, the characters look amazing.
Okay, seems for now I have fixed it. All I did was add -port 13094 to the end of the target exe in the short cut, and the updater is now...well...UPDATING!!! YAY!
so yea, for others with this problem, just change the target from
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe"
to
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CohUpdater.exe" -port 13094
and you will be fine.
ummm, I have a new problem now. I turned on my pc this morning, and ran the updater...It now just sits on downloading file manifest, and only once it has gotten past that, but it was downloading at 1 BYTE per second...
while typing this, it got through again, but is still only 12kb/sec... I am on a 8MB line, so that shouldn't be the problem.
Hi, I just stumbled across this game and it looks really promising. The only downside is after I made my account and all that and installed the trial updater from the link I was given, it won't download the game.
It first checks for connection, then about 2 seconds later, it changes to Checking Updater. I have currently had it on this for about an hour, and still no change what so ever.
The rest of the updater is all black, showing nothing at all, and I have installed and uninstalled multiple times...
Please Help.
