  1. This one is too easy, so was gonna let someone else have it, but...

Thanks for the chainsaw Shadow, I fire 'er up and split ya open from the top of the head, down. Now who's gonna pay for my dry cleaning? Waaayyy too much blood.

    Hey! I know!

Here, person below me, have this used spandex superhero outfit, stained with Shadow Ravenwolf's blood! (And trust me, I definitely have surface area larger than a quarter)
  2. A staff set! That would be cool as hell! I mean, if my MM could summon the staff as pets, that would be the pinnacle of total awesomeness!

Oh wait, you meant THAT kind of staff. Well, yeah, that's pretty cool too.

IIRC, Positron or Castle, or one of the devs said, during the in-game New Years meet and greet mentioned that staves may, at some point, be added to an existing set as a weapon customization option or something. Or maybe it was said they may be an option for some new set that would include other blunt objects used to pummel people into submission.

I just know someone somewhere is gonna read what I said, without reading the context the original statement was made in. The next thing you know, they will end up posting, "Hey! I heard that Going Rogue is going to let us invite our own alts to SGs!" and then they will commence complaining about it, threatening to cancel their subscription, and screaming how the game and all the devs suck, when it, of course, doesn't happen.
  4. You got me all excited for a moment. The following phrase jumped off the screen as an isolated statement:

By the way, there will still be one pretty big advantage to getting someone to invite your alts for you--prestige. Much better to have all (or most) of your alts generating prestige than just one.

One thing to keep in mind:

By design, the merit system is designed to yield a certain number of merits per hour. The number of merits an arc or TF give is based on how quickly (and with how much effort) the task can be completed. The devs crunch data periodically to see which arcs are taken more (or less) time to complete than they anticipated and adjust the number of merits accordingly. ( By the way all you speed demons out there, this is why speed running may not be in your best interest. if players find some new, much faster, method for rushing through TFs/Arcs, the merit rewards will be reduced).
  6. I enjoy it just fine, thank you for asking.

    .
    .
    .
    .

Oh, wait. You meant what do we do to enjoy it. Well, since I quit smoking about a month and a half ago, in favor of vaping, I now enjoy it with some tunes playing in the background (usually some sort of Classic Rock like Pink Floyd, The Who, The Rolling Stones, Guess Who, The Band, Procol Harum), my personal vaping device close at hand, along with a few bottles of flavored e-liquid (Grape and Dr. Pepper are currently in front of me).

As for in-game, it really depends on my mood. If I am feeling particularly social, or trying to get through a leveling hump, I'll log in and find a pick up group to run with. If I am feeling like I want to play but sort of want to be alone, I will log in one of my soloing toons.

For my solo toons, I typically have a few specific arcs I run along the way that produce some specific end reward. For example, on the Red Side I always run all of Marshal Brass' arcs so that I get early access to the Ouroboros Portal and can start dropping it immediately (around level 17 or 18 by that time usually) and step through it the moment I hit level 25. On the Red Side, there is, of course, The Midnighter's Arc around level 10 so that I have access to the Midnighter's Club and Cimerora when the time comes.

Other than that, on my solo toons, I run paper missions until i hit level 25. Then I start soloing flashback arcs for XP, drops, and Merits. I don't farm them repeatedly. For most of them, it's a "one and done" type deal, though I may repeat some arcs if the mood hits me or they are just arcs I currently enjoy playing on that particular toon.

On my more team-oriented toons, I just log them in and find a team--or start one if I am in the mood to run one--and go with the flow. When running a team myself, my preference is either find an arc that everyone (or almost everyone) has or to rotate between peoples' missions so everyone gets a chance to work on that mentoring badge, get merits, or whatever.

Since the addition of Super-Sidekicking, I don't much care about the level of teams I join, or the level of the people I invite to teams, provided they can hold their own in the team. I do attempt to make sure that we are running missions that are no more than 5 levels below the highest level person in the team. That way, no one loses access to any powers.

If it's a Double XP weekend, I run out to store during the server maintenance to pick up a generous supply of Dr. Pepper, order some pizza, and lock myself in my computer room with a sign on the door that says, "Do Not Open Until Monday Unless Someone is Dieing or the House is on Fire". Then I proceed to torture myself with sleep deprivation for next three days.

For the others... I don't know. Most of the things I can think of that would fit in with the sets... are either impossible with the engine, or would be overpowered.
To the fact that it would invalidate those who have already paid for the ability, add the fact that there would be no reason for anyone to ever pay for that booster again. Not likely they are going to add something which is likely going to guarantee a current product will never (or almost never) be sold again.

I will also echo Dr. Mike's sentiment that "replacing" powers is never a good idea, and the developers know this. You can, and should, tweak the numbers on powers in order to balance them with other game changes, but removing a power and replacing it with something entirely different can only lead to problems. No matter how useless you or I may think a power (*cough*groupteleport*cough*) is, there are those who like the power. Doesn't matter what the reason is. Doesn't matter whether you or I or anyone else thinks the reason is valid. They have found a use for the power and they shouldn't be forced to change their concept, rp, play-style, or anything else simply because others don't like a power.

On the topic of adding additional powers to the pools, I am all for it. Hell, I wouldn't mind seeing an extra power or two in the primary and secondary sets, WITHOUT adding more power or enhancement slots to accommodate them. This would force people to make more choices along the way when specing out their character. More choices means more colorful and diverse characters. That's a "Good Thing"(TM), in my opinion.

This topic came up a while back, so I will just quote what I said back then.

First, there are people that I simply choose not to team with. This may be because of a tendency to go AFK for extended periods of time inside of missions, bleeding experience for no effort. It may be because they have no clue what they are doing and are frequently a direct cause of needless team wipes. It may be because they are just jerks in general. In addition to ignoring these folks, I tend to rate them as 1 Star. This quickly ensures that I am no longer encumbered with teaming with them or any alt they should choose to create in the future. It also ensures that should one of them get dumped from my ignore list because it becomes filled with spammers, I still don't team with them.

Second, this would be a HUGE HUGE HUGE loophole for the spammers. Auto-Join team, spam, quit team, auto-join team, spam, quit team, etc. They are always looking for new and creative ways to get around the blocks and spam people. This would be a rather effective one.

Third, the number of incidents of the following....

    Clueless Automatically Added to Team.
    [Team] Clueless: 'Sup?
[Team] Actual Player: Welcome! Great to have you! We're running some mission arcs.
    [Team] Clueless: Wat AE U@?
[Team] Actual Player: No, I mean actual content.
    [Team] Clueless: N00bz!

    Clueless quits team.

Yeah... uhh... gotta give a thumbs down to the whole auto-join thing. Nothing personal, but ya' know...

Now the concept of being able to see a list of teams looking for more members, and being able to send a request to join the team, I could go for that.

Now, in this crude example, "Info" would pull up the same information you see if you select a player and click "Info". That way you could see what power sets they have, which powers in those sets, any set bonuses, etc.

Notice the handy presence of the "Ignore" button. This is for those who don't get the hint after the first two times you decline them.
In short, I agree with the idea, but would prefer to allow the team leader some control over who gets into the group.

On the topic of improving the player search interface, it would be nice to have the rating (if any) you have given a player visible on the search screen. Not sure how feasible this is since that information (along with player notes) is actually stored on the client side and not the server side. I suppose it would be possible though since the information is currently used to display the stars over the person's head, if enabled.
  10. Okay, in this thread, each poster must kill the person above them with whatever object they were just given, and then give an object to the next poster.

    Example:

    user #2 posted:
Thank you for the roll of duct tape. I taped over your mouth and nose and you suffocated.

Here, below user. Have a Sharpie marker.
    Rather simple.

    Rules:
    1. You may not beat the above user to death with the object.
    2. If you give the below user anything with a surface area smaller than that of a quarter or you give them nothing at all, you choke to death on your own stupidity. In this situation, it is fine to say:

Thank you for the (*object that is too small*). You just choked to death on your own stupidity.
    3. You must kill the below user with the object they gave you only, not with anything else, including your hands or your mind. Do not say:

I don't see how this is any different than heroes being tied to the Freedom Phalanx/Freedom Corps. Players frequently just ignore that if it doesn't fit their concept. In fact, they freely and openly play villains who, by all rights, Freedom Corp would certainly hunt down and arrest. They don't give it a second thought.

This is even EASIER to do in the Rogue Isles since the group you are supposedly tethered to is one which is frequently trying to kill you, and you are frequently trying to kill them. Not much of a stretch to imagine that you aren't part of that organization.

I do, however, hope that when they get around to doing the CoH2 project, they try to stay away from black and white and go more with the shades of grey they are introducing with Going Rogue. A faction-based system seems like a logical choice here. Get in good with The Family and they give you better and better jobs and are less likely to shoot you when they see you around the city. Go up against them too often and they'll go out of their way to take you down.

Not sure of the accuracy of this, but I remember hearing back during the CoV beta that they had deliberately not created any minions with a female appearance. Among the reasons for this was to avoid the inevitable influx of "Pimp" themed characters with colorful pet names. This, of course, would lead to a lot of work removing inappropriate toons when the inevitable complaints rolled in.

I'm sure you can also imagine the completely unoriginal "fun" people would have with the petsay command.

So yeah, this would be nice, but given what players could and would do with it.... I don't think it's worth the headaches.

I love my dominators and controllers just don't compare... and there is no minion Hero AT which is double suck.

also, is there a level requirement for switching sides with the expac? I'm rolling all new characters....
With Going Rogue, you will be able to start in Paragon City, the Rogue Isles, or a new area called Praetoria. If you start in Paragon or the Isles, you will be limited to the appropriate character archetypes. If you start in Praetoria, you will be able to choose any Archetype you like.

Praetoria is all new content for levels 1 through 20. By the time you get to Level 20, you will have made certain morality choices which will determine if you become a hero (and go to Paragon City) or a Villain (and go the Rogue Isles).

If you have an existing Hero or Villain (or start a new one in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles) and want to switch sides, you will need to wait until level 20. At level 20, you can begin to run morality missions that will help you to adjust your level. It's meant to be a gradual transition. It is not designed to be used as "Today I am a hero! Today I am a villain!", just at the flip of a switch.

There is actually a transitional "alignment" in between the shift. If you are Hero turning into a Villain, you will first become a Vigilante. From there you can become a Villain.

If you are Villain trying to redeem yourself to become a hero, you first become a Rogue, and from there can continue to redeem yourself to become a Hero.

The advantage of Vigilantes and Rogues is that they can visit both Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. You can join teams on both sides, but you can only get contacts on one side. Vigilantes can get contacts in Paragon, and Rogues can get them in the Rogue Isles.

Note: I am not in the beta. All of the above is based on my own understanding of how things will work based on various information that has been made public by the developers. As it is my own understanding, it may not be 100% accurate, but if so, someone should be along shortly to correct me and tell me I'm a moron. Please note, they may be just as wrong as I am unless their name is in Red.

Now, about whether or not you should be worrying about whether or not to leave the Rogue Isles, I would wait 10 more days and see what happens. If you actually read through the thread, there are going to be quite a few people moving toons TO the villain side. The Villain side has always been quieter than the hero side. Part of this has to do with the fact that City of Heroes was out well before City of Villains. By the time it came out, people had established themselves on the Heroside and could easily give new alts a boost with money to get em started (as of the release of Going Rogue and Issue 18 this will no longer be a barrier. Even without the expansion, you will be able to send cash back and forth between your heros and villains). Another part is that some people just find the Rogue Isles dark and dreary. They prefer the bright and shining streets of Paragon City. It's a matter of preference.

A large part is also that there are a lot more zones and a lot more content on the Blue side. This is ironic since a lot of people (I said a LOT not ALL, so if you don't do this I am not talking about you) completely ignore the content and just run radio missions.

For me, I find the Blue Side content to be much more time consuming and that there are lot more "filler" quests in the chains. For example, go to your contact...pick up the mission...go talk to some content at the far side of a zone 3 zones away...go back to your contact cause you can't call em yet...pick up a mission.... go back to the zone you just came from 3 zones away, to the far side of the zone, and kill 45 of some random NPC group...go back to your contact (cause you still can't call em yet)...

With fewer zones you don't see that on the villain side. Of the 7 Red Side Zones, 5 of them are accessible from one ferry. The other two are both directly accessible from Cap au Diable (Port Oakes through a separate ferry, and Mercy Island through the Black Helicopter). For this reason, even if you DO have to go to another zone on the Villain side, you are never more than 2 hops away. These numbers exclude PvP and Co-Op zones, but the maximum number of hops to get from ANY zone to ANY of those zones is only 3, and that assumes that you are in either Mercy Island or Port Oakes. If you are anywhere else, you can get literally anywhere in 2 hops.

And yes, I know the blue side can use base teleporters. The Red Side can too. The difference is, on the Blue Side they are almost a requirement in order to get around quickly.

Not a hugely bad idea, but I would say instead of removing them, have them always be paired with some other mission. In other words "Go talk this PvP Zone Liason OR Go Check Out This Warehouse".

The missions themselves are meant to expose first timers to the different PvP zones. Where they are, what the "theme" and "objective" is, etc. Assuming, of course, the first timer actually READS them.

The problem, obviously, is that you are only a first timer once. After that, it's just an annoyance that you have to suffer through before you can get a "real" mission.

I swear, I am NOT intentionally trying to pick on you. Just consider me the "Devil's Advocate" presenting an alternative viewpoint.

Again, not a hugely bad idea, but I see this working much better on the Red Side than the Blue Side. The Red Side has fewer zones and less overlap so what the "proper zone" for your level is is a bit more straight forward. This is not so true on the Blue Side.

It also gives the player less control over what zones they run radio missions in. Remember, there are paper missions in Faultline. Faultline is a great zone, but it's hardly a zone you want to arbitrarily be sent to with a team that is just out to run a few radio missions for XP, is it? Some of the doors for the radio missions there are a total PITA to get to.

You can already do this. There is a cooldown for it, but for most missions, you can autocomplete. If you are simply saying allow people to autocomplete stuff like the cape mission, aura missions, SO Store unlock missions, etc, I am with you.

If I am reading you right though, you also want to remove the cooldown. If that's the case, what would be the point of the abandon option? They already reduced the cooldown a few issues ago from 7 days to something like 3. I don't even use it enough to know, honestly.

  • Actually, if there is one pool power that is useless it's Team Teleport. It is much more efficient for the person to teleport themselves to the destination and then use Recall Friend (or Assemble Team if they have it) to bring everyone else.

Still, I don't necessarily think it should be removed. It's just one more power I don't need to worry about saving space for.
  • I've found it really depends on the power. With some powers I have found that 2 SOs or two IOs above level 30 are sufficient. Try slotting 2 and if you find you aren't hitting as much as you like, add a third. I also base it on how many different things I feel the need to slot on a power. For example, if it's a large attack, I may slot 2 Dmg, 2 Acc, and 2 Rech or 2 Dmg, 2 Acc, and 2 EndRdx. For my toons that have heals that require an enemy target like Transfusion or Twilight's Grasp, if I am not using a set, I always slot 2 Acc, 2 Heal, 2 Rech and find that the 2 accuracy are sufficient that the heal is generally there when I need it.

Okay, as a completely objective bystander here, I can see how the statement sounds contradictory. I think it is more a case of the second part being poorly worded.

He was responding to Satantic Hamster's statement that Isos may not want to start in Praetoria. When taken in context with the rest of what he was saying, it looks like when says "skip it with isos" he means for isos to skip it and not take advantage of it as a starting point.

So while I can see both sides of this very clearly, I have to think it's more of a case of not communicating clearly than being self-contradictory.

    Issue 7 gave us Thugs

Issue 18(Actually GR, but release date is the same) gives us Demon Summoning.

11 issues between the set releases. Concidering we're just now getting DS, I wouldn't count on getting another MM set for... a while.
You're forgetting the issues where we got new MM secondaries, so (discounting issue 6 since that was our starting point), the actual list of issues since then where MMs have gotten some love are...

    Issue 7 - Thugs

    Issue 12 - Storm Summoning

    Issue 13 - Pain Domination

    Issue 16 - Thermal Radiation

    Issue 18 - Demon Summoning

The largest gap we see is actually 5 issues, and it should be noted that no other ATs got any new powers during those issues either. Those are the issues that brought us new toys on the systems end like the Market, the Invention System, Ouroboros, Mission Architect, and the Mayhem Missions.

So yeah, while I certainly won't be complaining when MMs pick up new sets, I don't feel the need to complain now either. ATs are one of the few things Red Side that have NOT been neglected since issue 6.

Considering the fact that the developers, logically, tend to concentrate their development resources where it will benefit the most players, I am happy to see that MMs haven't been forgotten. After all, when they make a new MM primary set, they know it's never gonna be able to be used anywhere else except by MMs (unless of course they introduce some new ATs at some point). When they develop a new primary set for just about any other AT, they know they will be able to put it to use as a primary--or at the very least a secondary--on at least one other AT.

There is only one group of characters that someone might be able to argue have been somewhat neglected when it comes to powersets--Kheldian. That, by the way, is a completely unbiased opinion from someone who does NOT play a Kheldian. On the other hand, there is a good reason, thematically, why Peacebringers and Warshades each have only one primary set and one secondary set. The lack of flexibility in powersets is also greatly made up for by their high level of flexibility in how they utilize those sets. So even this is open for debate.

Okay. Yeah, pretty much what I expected to hear. Will try to keep on top of this thread so I know where to create the character.
  • I may be interested in creating a character over on Victory to get in on this. One question (and it's not really a deciding factor, more of a curiosity), do the members usually try to avoid playing the characters away from the group in order to keep the levels as in-sync as possible?
  • Back in my Pen and Paper days of roleplaying, one of the games I played was a diceless RPG. That's right... diceless... as in pure roleplaying. Anyway, one of the things the game recommended, was to ask yourself some questions about your character that have no impact on stats, but on the character's individual personality.

Though I have long ago retired my Pen and Paper games, and the original list is long gone, I thought it may be useful for me to put together my own list here for CoX roleplayers. The purpose is not so much for people to respond with their answers for all to read (though, feel free to do so). It is more for them to get themselves to answer the questions for themselves and to think of the character from a roleplaying point of view--as an individual rather than as an extension of the player.
    • Where does your character get his or her laundry done?
    • In a philosophical discussion of death, how would your character describe the perfect death?
    • What is your character's favorite food or drink? What food or drink do they absolutely hate?
    • Describe your character's personal bedroom. Is it in your supergroup's base or somewhere else?
    • How would your character's father describe him or her?
    • Would the description be any different coming from his or her mother?
    • If you (the player) were to meet the character, what would you most DISLIKE about the character, from a personality standpoint. (Do NOT think of what you don't like about limitations on pwoersets...think personality)

Have fun with it, and, as I said, feel free to expand on the list.
  • The Praetorian Clockwork look really nice. Can't wait to see them in action.

Hmm... meet the demands of tomorrow, today? In that case, I demand you let me into the beta... tomorrow.

Hey! It was worth a shot!
  • I went through Tuesday, and deleted all my toons, both Heros and Villains from Virtue (not before pooling their cash and other worthwhile resources, of course), and created one new hero and one new villain. Both of them are probably staying where they are. When GR comes out, I will likely be creating two more for the express purposes of playing on opposing sides--A controller who will end up Red Side, and a Mastermind who will end up Blue Side.

The remaining slots will be used as the urge hits me and could end up going blue or red. I imagine that they will end up being fairly evenly split.
