  1. Just checked, the missing episodes of YJ and GL aren't on iTunes anymore.

I'm thinking NCSoft's majority share holder, Nexon, had a really big say in what to do with CoH/CoV.

This article is a couple weeks old and not directly associated with CoH/CoV, but it gave a small hint at what they're trying to do...at least it did for me.
The theory I've been going with is that, when NCSoft posted that big quarterly loss, someone with klout contacted management and said "This is unacceptable, you will take decisive action immediately or we'll see about getting management who will". And yes, if you own 15% of the stock and are the largest shareholder, you wield a lot of power and a threat like that is going to be taken seriously.

If it's a given that NCSoft had to close a studio, Paragon was the obvious choice, as much as I hate to admit it. They were the small dog in terms of income, and there wasn't any sign of significant growth in the future (unlike ArenaNet, say, who was about to bring in piles of cash - plus you'd look really stupid canning a company about to launch a game that early reviews are positive about).

That doesn't explain the refusal to sell, and there it may just be NCSoft reverting to standard behavior, we don't sell our IP.

Which actually would be a positive (not as positive as them seriously negotiating to sell, but more positive than "we hate CoH, those lousy superheroes are too western" or "mua ha ha, we have cashed the check from (you pick the competitor) to kill them"). Because just like Nexon would have the clout to say "close a studio", they also have the clout to say "sell the game".

Yes, all that is speculation, I have absolutely zero inside knowledge to back it up. But it explains the sudden shutdown without forewarning. Which wasn't true for any of their prior closures - all four games had serious problems and only "we hope we can fix it if you give us more time and money" to get around them. I've heard that some of those seeking to buy are pitching Nexon to help make it happen, and that's smart.

So if you paid by credit card, there may be a delay in notification from your bank (or may be no notification until you next check your balance).

BTW, I figured out why I got the refunds I did. Did two non-recurring subscription extensions, one on August 2, one on August 20th. If they had been made to an account with no VIP time on it, the first payment would take me to September 2nd (so a 97 cent refund would be in line) and the second to September 20th (making a 10 refund correct). Hopefully Larry in billing will understand my explanation and get it all handled. But nice to understand the numbers, they'd seemed to be completely inexplicable.
Finally got another pair of refund notices from Paypal today, which brings the refunds up to what I think they should be. So if you were like me, didn't do recurring payments and hadn't gotten as much as you thought you should, more may be on the way.
  4. Loved it. And let me echo, watch it in HD. Really beautiful

Got to admit, though - I'd love a version with voice over for those first few shots.
  5. The link's from 2009, and NCSoft has had a bad Q2 (and from what they've released so far, looks like it'll be a bad Q3 when they release the numbers). Big loss. So "they've got so much money they don't care" may no longer be true.

    What is AP33?

After every maintenance, someone has been recreating Atlas Park 33 on Virtue, which is greatly appreciated.

BTW, Leandro visited every zone during the rally, captured all the heros and their costumes, and edited them into one video.

Here are the 3700 heroes that rallied in Virtue that day:

If the goal was just to get us to shut up - they could easily have held out false hope. Something like:

We have heard your message, you want the game to continue. It's what we'd like to have happen. That's not possible within NCSoft, business reasons required we close the studio. But we continue to negotiate with others on the possibility of leasing or purchasing the IP. We cannot comment upon the state of these negotiations other than to state that there are no guarantees, but your desires have been heard and now it comes down to negotiations."

My guess is that it's not about getting the players to shut up, but rather close off attempts of those who are trying to open negotiations and to stop those within the company trying to encourage/support negotiations.

And yes, this message is an announcement that negotiations are closed and there will be no sale of the content.

You don't make a statement like this if there's any serious negotiations going on or being considered. Conceivably someone could wave a very large check in front of them for reconsideration, but this is the sort of statement one makes when negotiations are over and you don't want to be blamed for the lack of a deal.

Whether there were real negotiations done in good faith that just hit an impasse that neither side was willing to budge from or posturing to look like they were willing to negotiate when they knew going in they'd never agree is in this sense irrelevant, this is the statement that says "it's over".

    And **** them for that.
  9. First, Hit Streak, thanks for getting this info to us as soon as you got it, it's no fun being the messenger and I appreciate the work you're doing on this.

    Now I'm going to vent.

********. Utter 100% stinking crap. Their actions speak louder than words, and their actions shout that they don't give a flying **** for the game or its history or its players and that all our feedback was filed in the nearest trash can.

"We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property" except saying "Yes". If they really wanted to strike a deal, any reasonably bright businessman could come up with something. "OK, you don't have the cash to buy the assets outright. So here's our deal. We will license all the existing IP, code, and customer data for a nominal fee, say 10K per year, plus say 10% of any profits. This license is for five years, renewable for another five years, and at any point you can buy the assets for $x." Bingo bango there's the deal.

Instead, they took a dump on the players and said "screw you, we don't care, game is closing".

    To hell with them.

NCSoft has killed and shelved a number of games. Can't think of any I'd described as viable - conceivably some of them could have eventually been made viable with enough time and money, but none I'd describe as viable when closed, except CoH (unless there are some I am not remembering/didn't know about).
  11. My gut says, I don't know, and the call about saving it or killing it won't be in my hands.

If you really wanted my guess about the most probable result, I'd say that no, it won't be saved. But that's just guessing at probabilities and no knowledge about what's going on to save it. So I'll continue to have hope that it can be saved, and should the time come when I can do something to improve the odds I'll be ready.

    Refund Day

Got two notices from NCSoft that, well, confuse me.

In August, I extended my subscription twice, once to extend my VIP time to September 22nd, another to extend it to October 22nd. So if they're refunding unused balances since September 1, was expecting 14.99 back from the second, and about $10 back on the first, give or take.

Instead, the first payment had 97 cents refunded, and the second payment (full month) had $9.67 refunded.

Paid via PayPal, so that's how the refund was handled, and in fact they were tied to that payment.

Will be curious to see if others report a partial, if it's something unique to Paypal accounts (they're removing processing fees or something) or what.
  15. I'm going to go with four.

    (1) The first time I flew, in beta. It was in Steel Canyon, and I think I spent hours just flying around the big buildings

    (2) The first time I entered Boomtown. This was before train station missions were added, so had never experienced a ruined area. DAMN. There was a war fought here.

    (3) The nine minute hami raid - this was before incarnate powers. Everyone participating on virtue got shivans, Warburg nukes, vanguard mechs, etc. We cleared the mitos once, and then took Hami to zero

    (4) The first time completing the Statesman's Task Force. Just after intro, rumors that the devs had never managed to beat it. But we won!

    (5) OK, one more. First time running the Hess TF in Striga. New to everyone. Looking through the windows in the early missions. "Do we get to fight that?" And at the end, Burkhalter was done, defeated at the top of his metal monstrosity - what do you mean self-destruct? Where is the exit?

The problem isn't "oh no, we can't use anything electronic", it's "what's the impact on living things if some sort of field is operating that stops anything from a one-cell flashlight to a hydro-electric plant".
  17. If you want a happy ending, that depends, of course, on where you stop the story. This may not be where we chose to end this story, but the bigger story continues.

Thank you, Andy, and good luck.
  18. The three-level tech map. With Nemesis snipers at every spawn point. Can't pull them, and in melee range of one you get shot at by two or three others.

That second nemesis automaton in Dark Watchers arc. And almost as annoying, explaining why I need help without spoiling the mission.

"You have a timed mission" "ADMIN: The server will be going down in 10 minutes" (Actually, for many missions, it could be a fun challenge.)

I think that's a bit more paranoid. I think it's more likely that someone hit a checklist item "Mac support for GW2 because WoW runs on Macs" and some management guy said "Hey, theres these guys who did the port for that other game, call them".

In many ways, Transgaming is the perfect solution. Little work needed from the developer, it's all on them. If it worked, it would be even more perfect!

I have a feeling I'm going to feel stupid when someone tells me the answer to this.
There's a construction area in the NE corner of Steel. In the paper map released with one of the box sets, it talked about a rocket base.
  22. I recently went through a similar decision, and was definitely going for prebuilt after a bad experience with my own build.

I went with a Dell XPS 8500 with an I5-3450 processor and an NVideo GT 640 video card and 8GB RAM. (Got just the PC, already had monitor and the other add-ons they pushed on me). Cost me a total of $811.23 delivered, there was a small deal on it, it's currently $999 which is still well within your budget. I'm running it on a 1920x1080 resolution 21" monitor and been playing City of Heroes in Ultra mode without a problem, even during hami raids, Magisterium trials, and various support rallies for the game.

Is it the very best computer I could have gotten for that money? Building, probably not, buying, was pretty close. I've had really good experiences with Dell, so the fact it was from Dell was a plus, but not everyone has had the same experiences. Just presenting this as an option worth looking at - it's not a hot spanking game machine but it's more than served my needs which seem close to yours and one that may not have sprung to mind.

You will definitely receive a partial refund for the months where the service is not there. Reading Z's announcement, it's not completely clear if the refund will be calculated based on September 1st or December 1st.
  24. A little unclear on the refund of the subscription balance. Suppose, hypothetically, one had exactly 6 months left to go on September 1. Will they get a 3 month refund for December, January, and February, or a 6 month refund for September through February?

Obviously, the result I'm hoping for is that one of the hail mary passes in the air will succeed and there'll be another announcement about how the transfer to the new owners will handle. But for this announcement, about how recent point purchases and unused subscriptions are handled, this is a fair resolution. Thank you, and thank those involved in making this happen.

Blocked in the U.S, presumably because of the song used for the soundtrack. Some artists, and some labels, aren't willing to let people use their songs in user videos (even though they get ad revenue when the song is identified like the other two older ones).
